Every superhero, no matter how small, needs a cape(披风). That was Rose Smith’s motivation when she started sewing superhero capes for kids with cancer, heart disease, and other severe diseases.
It all began when Rose heard of a girl named Anna. Anna was fighting against a potentially deadly skin condition called harlequin ichthyosis(丑角鳞癣). What she was going through was tough, but she faced it bravely. “I had a happy moment,” Rose says. “Anna was a superhero! She needed a cape.”
So, Rose sent her one, and Anna’s mother was delighted. After that, Rose found ten more kids online and sent out ten more capes. Before long, she quit her job at a software company and work full time for the website- www.tinysuperheroes.com, where people can buy handmade capes for brave kids facing illness and disability.
Since 2013, Rose and her small paid staff have sent more than 12,000 handmade capes to kids in all 50 states and 15 other countries. The capes can be made in different colors and can be decorated with the child’s initials(姓氏首字母)or specialized patches, including a heart or a rocket.
One was five-year-old Gary. He was born with heart defects. Rose sent him a red cape with a bright yellow G in the center. It was a hit. Gary, who is now a frequenter on the company’s social media posts, becomes a very well-known kid. In fact, two years later, “We still bring Gary’s cape with us to every hospital appointment, as it brings him much power to face his disease,” said Gary’s mom.

Many animals and plants are endangered in the world today. These endangered species are threatened with becoming extinct, meaning they will no longer exist on Earth. Examples include the Cuban Macaw and the Sri Lankan Legume Tree. Illegal hunting, and collecting of the Macaw bird for pets, led to its extinction. While the main reason the native Sri Lankan Legume Tree went extinct was due to habitat loss from development in the 20th century. The main cause for animals and plants disappearing is often a damage to the food chain due to hunting, habitat loss or even the introduction of new species.
Every living thing from one- celled animals to a blue whale needs to eat. Nature is connected and controlled by many weak food chains. A food chain describes who eats whom in a habitat. When one of the links in a food chain is no longer present—for example, a species goes extinct—the food chain breaks and sometimes this can cause other animals to disappear and the whole system can become imbalanced or even collapsed.
Humans can have horrible effects on food chains. When people first explored the world, they took animal and plant species from their home countries to the places they explored and settled in. They did not realize the consequences of introducing invasive species. By doing so, they were damaging the natural food chains of the areas they explored.
Nowadays there are strict rules controlling the movement of animals and plants between countries. But some parts of the world are still experiencing problems with invasive species introduced hundreds of years ago.
With rising awareness of how we affect the natural environment, hopefully we can learn to protect these food chains and help them to thrive. Otherwise the continued loss of species will eventually mean our own extinction.
28. Which is the main reason for Cuban Macaw’s extinction?
A. Illegal hunting. B. Food chain damage. C. Invasive species. D. Habitat loss.
29. What do we know about a food chain in paragraph 2?
A. It only affects one-celled animals. B. It decides the balance of the whole system.
C. It is always broken by invasive species. D. It breaks after nearly ten species disappear.
30. How do humans seriously affect food chains?
A. By hunting endangered animals. B. By exploring new places.
C. By polluting natural environment. D. By introducing invasive species.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Disappearance of Endangered Species B. Effect of Illegal Hunting on a Habitat
C. The Link between Food Chains and Extinction D. Damage of Invasive Species
D
Children who spend more time playing adventurously have lower symptoms of anxiety and depression and were happier over the first Covid-19 lockdown, according to a new study led by the University of Exeter. Today’s children have fewer opportunities for adventurous play, such as climbing trees, riding bikes, or jumping from high surfaces. The study sought to test theories that adventurous play offers learning opportunities that help build resilience(适应力)in children, thereby helping to prevent mental health problems.
The research team surveyed nearly 2500 parents of children aged 5-1 1 years. Parents completed questions about their child’s play, their general mental health pre-Covid and their mood during the first Covid-19 lockdown.
Researchers found that children who spent more time playing outside had fewer “internalizing problems,” characterized as anxiety and depression. Those children were also more positive during the first lockdown. Results were consistent even after researchers factored in a wide range of demographic variables(人口统计学变量)including child sex, age, parent employment status and parent mental health. They also found that the effect was clear in children from lower income families than those growing up in higher income homes.
“This is positive because play is free, natural, and rewarding for children, available to everyone, and doesn’t require special skills. We now urgently need to invest in and protect natural spaces, well-designed parks, and adventure playgrounds, to support the mental health of our children,” Helen Dodd, who led the study, said.
“The rewards of allowing children to self-regulate and manage challenge in their play are widespread and far-reaching. Adventurous play helps children to build the resilience needed to deal with, and manage stress in challenging situations,” said Jacqueline O’Loughlin, Chief Executive of PlayBoard NI. “Children and young people need freedom and opportunities to encounter challenge and risk in their everyday playful adventures.”
32. What does the new study focus on?
A. The influence of adventurous play on children.
B. Children’s social needs during the Covid-19 lockdown.
C. Ways of improving children’s resilience.
D. Symptoms of anxiety and depression in children.
33. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The significance of the research. B. The process of the research.
C. The limitations of the research. D. The results of the research.
34. What does Helen Dodd advise people to do?
A. Allow children to use natural spaces for free.
B. Reward children for attending adventurous play.
C. Create opportunities for children to adventure.
D. Encourage children to learn special skills for adventures.
35. What is O’Loughlin’s attitude towards adventurous play?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Disapproving. D. Uncaring.

第二节(满分25分)

Monday started out great. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my math test that day. I was confident that I would get a high mark. I left my house, and minutes later, I was sitting with my friends on the school bus. We were busy talking about how we spent our weekend. At one stop, a boy named Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped(绊倒)over someone’s foot and fell flat onto the floor.
Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily. Ryan picked himself up, dusted his jacket and made his way to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was burning with embarrassment. The rest of the morning flew by. I did well in my math test. It wasn’t long before the lunch bell rang. I met my friends from the cheerleading(啦啦队)team in the dining hall.
When we finished eating, we headed out to the courtyard to practice for that night’s football game. After much exercise, we decided to practice it again one last time. Again, just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great. I raised my leg for one last toe touch(抬腿摸脚趾训练). Suddenly, I felt myjeans was torn down in the middle of my backside.
I froze (僵住了). Embarrassed, I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing and I saw them pointing at my broken jeans. Trying to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears began to well up in my eyes.

第一节【参考范文】
Dear friends,
Our school produces a lot of rubbish every day, such as leftover food, waste paper and plastic bottles, which brings a wide range of environmental problems as well as the waste of resources. Therefore, it’s time we took immediate action to change the situation. First of all, it is necessary for us to raise awareness of environmental protection and develop the good habit of garbage sorting. What’s more, we should voluntarily differentiate recyclable rubbish from non-recyclables in our daily life. In a word, if everyone does his/ her bit responsibly in garbage sorting, our school will become better and better.

Then I saw Ryan running towards me. Suddenly the scene struck me where he fell flat and I laughed at him crazily, I thought he would join in with those laughing at me. I lowered, my head, my face burning with embarrassment. However, Ryan didn’t laugh. Instead, he approached me from behind, quickly took off his jacket and offered it to me, signaling to me to cover my torn jeans. Struggling against my tears, I did want to express my gratitude to him but courage failed me. I left the courtyard in total silence.
That night, after the cheer at the football game, I found Ryan. I thanked him for giving me his jacket and returned it to him. Gathering my courage, I sincerely apologized to him for my misconduct on the bus, and thanked him for helping me out of an equally embarrassing situation. Ryan, with a broad smile, patted me on the shoulder and told me to forget about it, joking he fell like that a lot. I admired his honesty and sense of humor, and realized that he was someone I could be great friends with. Honestly, Monday was a great day indeed!

Hello, everyone. ⑰I really don't know what I want to do when I leave school. My dad is in the navy. My mum is a scientist. My uncle is a doctor and he is always talking about replacing people's organs. ⑱This makes me feel a bit ill. He also wants me to sign a form saying that I will donate my heart or eyes if anything happens to me. One of my other uncles is an astrologist. He has a telescope and spends every night looking at distant outer space. But I love sleeping! ⑲I hope I could always study to be a computer engineer like my brother, but then I'd have to sit in front of a computer all day. I know what! I could be an inventor! I could invent! I could have hundreds of patents for the things I'd invented and I would be rich. But... I don't think there's a university for inventors. ⑳Maybe I should just join the navy first.
