Gap Year Sailing Programs
About Programs
A gap year is typically a year-long break before or after university. Sailing in a gap year is a trip of discovery. These unique adventure programs can take you across oceans and whole regions to experience dozens of countries in a single gap year. They can cover several regions, like the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, New England, The Maritimes, etc.
You’ll find that a boat is a perfect place to put classroom theory into real-world practice. The valuable new skills that you have here can be easily applied to nearly any workplace. Cooperation, creative thinking, and problem-solving are all necessities of life aboard a ship and applicable wherever you go after your voyage ends.
Planning Your Trip
● Costs
How much a sailing gap year costs changes greatly depending on the type of the program and the length of the voyage. A program lasting a few weeks may cost $5000 or more. Months-long adventures may be as much as $20,000, especially if they involve college credits or other coursework.
● Accommodation (住宿)
Housing will consist of a berth (铺位) aboard your boat. Don’t expect anything fancy. You’ll likely have little more than a bed and a small storage locker in a two-or three-person cabin. Given the limited size of your living space, expect to stay with your crew mates at all times with little real privacy.
● Health & Safety
Living aboard a ship means that you can’t always count on having medical equipment nearby. You are asked to provide a health certificate (证明) confirming that you are in good health before being accepted into your program. Most programs include medical emergency insurance as part of their fees.
1. Which of the following is the benefit of joining the programs?
A. Learning survival skills on the sea.
B. Gaining applicable skills and experience.
C. Making new friends with your crew mates.
D. Having chances to operate high-tech equipment.
2. What can we say about the accommodation of the programs?
A. Cheap. B. Simple. C. Private. D. Comfortable.
3. What is required to join the programs?
A. Learn basic shipboard duties. B. Have a large budget for your trip.
C. Buy medical emergency insurance. D. Offer a health certificate from your doctor.

I was not a quiet woman by nature. As a backpacker in my 20s, I was always looking for that next adventure, something new and exciting that made me feel as though I had been the first person to experience it.
I realized I fell in love with that feeling when I jumped on board a sailboat as a tourist on the San Blas Islands , a group of remote islands on the east coast of Panama. Now , five years later,I find myself owning a sailboat and setting out from the United States with my husband ,John, to sail our new home back to Australia while admiring all that this beautiful, watery world has to offer on the way.
We will live off the power of the wind to fill our sails and move our boat, the energy from the sun to power our electronics and the natural products from the ocean to fill our stomachs. We will not be over- consuming electricity or overfishing as these are luxuries (奢侈品) that are not possible in the limited space that comes along with life on a sailing boat.
For people who are always curious about life, sailing provides an endless learning space. These learning opportunities consist of expected learning opportunities such as reading the weather, keeping maintenance (保养) , and learning anchoring (抛锚) techniques. Aboard our boat, we are constantly absorbing new knowledge about things like the electrical systems of the boat ,food preparation ,wildlife watching and the history of each country and port.
I am not to talk you into following me. For some this presents a challenge ; for others it is a chance to choose a lifestyle living off the grid (输电网). And again,I want to repeat that a lifestyle or trip like this may not be for everyone :some may find it emotionally inspiring , while others in the same circumstances may find it to be emotionally tiring. However, if you enjoy personal development and self- reflection , this aspect of sailing is invaluable.
4. When did the author fall in love with adventurous trips?
A. When she moved to Australia.
B. When she got her first sailboat.
C. When she set out to sail with her husband.
D. When she traveled in Panama in a sailboat.
5. What is special about the author’s latest sailing?
A. It is environmentally friendly. B. It is well prepared in advance.
C. It mainly passes by big cities. D. It uses the latest sailing technology.
6. How does the author possibly feel about her sailing experience?
A. Worried. B. Satisfied. C. Doubtful. D. Regretful.
7. Which of the following may the author agree with?
A. Travel teaches us to reflect on our life.
B. Living a green lifestyle is highly recommended.
C. Sailing contributes a lot to personal development.
D. Partners should do something meaningful together.

For the first time in 100 years , the endangered California condor (禿鹰)will return to the Pacific Northwest. As the largest flying land bird , the California condor was once in a difficult situation of extinction, but now has made noticeable steps towards recovery.
California condors prehistorically lived from California to Florida and, in modem times ,from Western Canada to Northern Mexico. By the mid - 20th century , condor populations had decreased due to illegal hunting and poisoning. In 1967 , the California condor was listed as endangered with a population of 50 to 60. Fifteen years later ,only 23 condors survived worldwide. By 1987 ,all remaining wild condors had been placed into a captive breeding program (圈养繁殖计划). Thus ,a recovery program began to save the species from extinction. As a result of excellent protection partnerships and reintroduction efforts , there are now over 300 California
condors in the wild in America.
The return of condors to the skies is a key step towards the recovery of the beautiful scenery. These creatures are essential members of their ecosystems and play a very important and necessary role in the spiritual and cultural beliefs of the Yurok Tribe. Because condors have an irreplaceable place in their culture , the Yurok Tribe has led this reintroduction effort and completed a great deal of work to prepare for the return of condors to the Pacific Northwest over the past twelve years.
Recently ,the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service , National Park Service , and the Yurok Tribe came together to announce a final rule. This rule will help to facilitate the creation of a new California condor release (放生) place for the reintroduction of condors to Yurok Ancestral Territory and Redwood National and State Parks. Considering the date of the completion of the condor release place may be ahead of schedule , the actual release of condors would be spring of 2022.
Steve Mietz is the head of Redwood National and State Parks. He said," We will continue to work with our partners in condor recovery. Tourists can visit the tallest trees in our parks while watching the largest birds in the world fly overhead. ”

When did you last stop to look at a tree? Really look at it , not merely notice it. Trees play such an important role in our lives and yet day to day we often don’t even notice them; we often take them for granted. Yet if you are looking to strengthen your grounds , reduce pollution around your school , improve your children’s health and wellbeing and develop your science subject , then planting trees is certainly the way forward.
The first and most obvious benefit of starting a tree-planting program is the environmental impact. Children are enthusiastic, and often highly knowledgeable about climate change and the main causes of it. They are also interested in projects that can make a difference to their community’s carbon footprints. Planting trees is an easy and long-lasting way to involve pupils and to have a positive impact on the climate.
A tree-planting program also offers teachers the opportunity to discuss biodiversity (生物多样性) and gives pupils the chance to get involved in an actual example. It’s a real-life science experiment and will provide children with amazing habitats to study in science lessons for years to come.
Planting trees can also have a positive impact on children’ s mental health. One in four people in the UK will experience mental health issues at some point in their lives and one in 10 children aged 5-16 have a diagnosable (可诊断的) mental health condition , according to The Children’s Society. Mental health is a complex issue with many causal factors and no simple solutions. However , according to the Mental Health Foundation , the opportunity to play and learn in outdoor environments has been quoted in research studies as a significantly positive influence.
Being active will also improve children’s general health and wellbeing, as well as increasing engagement more generally by providing an enjoyable context for learning. Parents and the community, too, will enjoy the improved beauty of the school grounds.
12. What can children do to contribute to the community’s efforts to cut carbon footprints?
A. Reduce their daily activities. B. Attend tree-planting projects.
C. Learn more about climate change. D. Encourage more people to take action.
13. How can a tree planting program benefit teachers?
A. By making their classes livelier.
B. By supplying them with habitats to study.
C. By providing them with real examples of biodiversity.
D. By giving them chances to communicate with students.
14. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Outdoor activities can benefit children' s mental health.
B. Children’s playtime is reducing gradually in recent years.
C. Planting trees is a perfect way to improve the environment.
D. Few people in the UK pay much attention to mental health.
15. What can be the best tile for the text?
A. How can schools get involved in tree-planting projects?
B. Children need more care from their teachers.
C. Why should schools be planting trees?
D. Schools should set up new classes.

【47题答案】
【答案】Paragraph 1:
“I can’t thank you enough for being here.” said George Sang. “I have waited for so long. Having spent ages chasing my fortune, which has become an important thing in my life, eventually I realized my dream. However, had it not been for your honesty, I would have lost it forever. You can charge for it. I’m definitely willing to pay for your kindness.” said George Sang sincerely. The artist smiled, “It’s you who are in possession of it. Though I am nothing but a poor young artist, I want nothing in return.”
Paragraph 2:
“I was about to leave this morning to Vienna to attend advanced music studies.” said the young artist. “However, I found your lottery ticket. I had no choice but to stay for its owner.” he said. “So you missed your chance for further study?” George said anxiously, “What an honest man! It’s unbelievable that you stayed at the expense of your future. But I’m sorry there is nothing I can do about it.” Everyone left in disappointment, leaving the artist with the hat. To his great surprise, there lay a lottery ticket with a note attached to it, saying, “Your sacrifice is well worth the money. Go to pursue your dream!”
