    Mrs. Thompson

Jean Thompson stood in front of her fifth-grade class on the very first day of school in the fall and told the children a lie. Like most teachers, she looked at her pupils and said that she loved them all the same, that she would treat them all alike. That was   13   because there in front of her, slumped(斜躺) in his seat on the third row, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.

Because Teddy was an unpleasant boy, no one else seemed to   14   him, either. At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child’s records. His rst-grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is a bright child with good manners.” His second-grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is an excellent student well-liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother is seriously ill.” His third-grade teacher wrote, “Teddy continues to work hard, but his mother’s death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best but his father doesnt show much   15   and his home life will soon affect(影响) him if some steps arent taken.” Teddy’s fourth-grade teacher wrote, “Teddy doesn’t have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class. He is slow and could become a problem.”

By now Mrs. Thompson   16   the problem, but Christmas was coming fast. Her children brought her presents, all in beautiful ribbon and bright paper, except for Teddy’s, which was carelessly wrapped in the heavy, brown paper of a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson took   17   to open it in the middle of the presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one quarter full of perfume(香水). She stopped the children’s laughter, when she said how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume behind the other wrist. Teddy Stoddard stayed behind just long enough to say, “Mrs. Thompson, today you   18   just like my mom used to.” After the children left she cried for at least an hour.

On that very day, Jean Thompson paid particular attention to one they called “Teddy”. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. On days where there would be an important test, Mrs. Thompson would   19   that perfume. By the end of the year he had become one of the smartest children in the class and ... well, he had also become the “pet” of the teacher who had once promised to love all her children the same. A year later she found a note from Teddy, telling her that of all the teachers he’d had in elementary school, she was his favorite. Many years after that, another letter came. This time he explained that she was still his favorite teacher, but now his name was a little longer. The letter was signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, M.D. (医学博士)

Aubrey is a FedEx driver who has made regular delivery stops in a small town in Indiana. During her stops there, she would see an 11-year-old boy, Elijah, playing basketball with an old and rusty bent hoop(篮球框).

“It was crazy to me how happy he was with the broken hoop. Every time I saw him, he was so joyful playing basketball. Seeing him so happy stuck with me,” said Aubrey.

The FedEx driver thought about Elijah many times over the months, and decided that she wanted to help him in a special way. “I just wouldn’t stop thinking about it. I really wanted to get him a hoop. He should have a new one.”

Aubrey went out and bought a new basketball hoop and replaced the old one when the family wasn’t home. She left a note that read: “Just want you and your son to have the best hoop that’ll grow with him and all his friends.” She signed herself “just one of the FedEx drivers in the area”.

“I read the note, and the moment I realized who it was from, I started to cry,” said Coledo, Elijah’s mom. “When Elijah came home and I showed it to him, he got really emotional. He got teary-eyed but he’s an 11-year-old boy, so he really didn’t want to show he was crying,” laughed Coledo. “He just sat there for 10 minutes looking at the hoop until it really touched him that she went out of her way to do something just for him.”

Aubrey had no idea how much her surprise gift had influenced Elijah and his family. They all had gone through a difficult year with Coledo’s husband wounded seriously, and Coledo crashing her car. “It’s just been a hard year. We’re so grateful she would do this for us. This has been a huge thing for us,” said Coledo.

When Aubrey made another FedEx delivery to their neighborhood, Elijah saw her, ran to her and hugged her. Elijah also gave Aubrey a card he made for her. And he invited her to play a game of basketball with him and his younger brother.

“It was almost like we’d always known each other. I really felt closely connected with the boys,” said Aubrey. “I’m just really happy they know that someone is out there for them.”

    24. Aubrey bought Elijah a new basketball hoop because ________.

      A. she wanted to make a friend with a surprise gift

      B. she was eager to help the children in the small town

      C. she was deeply moved by Elijah’s love for basketball

      D. she thought Elijah was unhappy with the broken hoop

    25. How did the family feel when they saw the new hoop?

      A. Touched.   B. Satisfied.   C. Relaxed.   D. Honored.

    26. What influence did Aubrey’s gift have on Elijah and his family?

      A. It helped Elijah achieve his dream.

      B. It solved the family’s money problem.

      C. It gave the family warmth at a difficult time.

      D. It encouraged Elijah to connect with other boys.

Over the past half-century, scientists have agreed on two reasonable theories related to baby talk. One states that a young child’s brain needs time to master language. The second theory states that a child’s vocabulary level is the key factor. According to this theory, some key steps have to happen in a logical order before sentence formation happens.

In 2007, researchers at Harvard University, who were studying the two theories, found a clever way to test them. More than 20,000 internationally adopted(收养的) children enter the U.S. each year. Many of them no longer hear their birth language after they arrive, and they must learn English more or less the same way infants(婴儿) do. International adoptees don’t take classes or use a dictionary when they are learning their new tongue. All of these factors make them an ideal population in which researchers could test these competing theories about how language is learned.

Neuroscientists Jesse Snedeker, Joy Geren and Carissa Shafto studied the language development of 27 children adopted from India between the ages of two and five years. These children began learning English at an older age than US natives and had more mature(成熟的) brains. Even so, just as American-born infants, their first English sentences were made up of single words. The adoptees then went through the same stages as typical American-born children, though at a faster speed. The adoptees and native children started putting words together in sentences when their vocabulary reached the same sizes, further suggesting that what matters is not how old you are or how mature your brain is, but the number of words you know.

This finding—that having more mature brains did not help the adoptees avoid the baby talk stage—suggests that babies speak in baby talk not because they have baby brains, but because they have only just started learning and need time to gain enough vocabulary. Before long, the one-word stage will give way to the two-word stage and so on. Learning how to chat like an adult is a gradual process.

But this finding also raises an even older and more difficult question. Adult immigrants(移民)who learn a second language seldom achieve the same level in a foreign language as the average child raised as a native speaker. Researchers have long supposed there is a “critical period” for language development, after which it cannot proceed with full success to fluency(流利度). Yet we still do not understand this critical period or know why it ends.

    27. What is the writer’s main purpose in Paragraph 2?

    A. To argue that culture influences the way children learn a language.

    B. To give reasons why adopted children were used in the study.

    C. To challenge the view that adopted children need two languages.

    D. To prove a particular method to language learning.

    28. What does the Harvard finding show?

    A. Language learning takes place in ordered steps.

    B. Some children need more conversation than others.

    C. Children with more mature brains avoid baby talk stage.

    D. Vocabulary makes little difference to sentence formation.

    29. When the writer says “critical period”, he means a period when_______.

    A. children start to learn a second language

    B. immigrants want to learn another language

    C. adults need to be taught by native speakers

    D. language learners may achieve native-like fluency

    30. What does this passage mainly talk about?

    A. What role baby talk plays in our lives.

    B. Why babies learn a second language easily.

    C. What affects children’s language development.

    D. How children enlarge their vocabulary gradually.

    D

What does it mean to live a good life? This question has been discussed for centuries. In the field of psychology(心理学), two main concepts of the good life have been quite popular: A happy life full of pleasure and positive emotions, and a meaningful life full of purpose and sacrifice(奉献). But what if these aren’t the only choices?

In recent years, a long-neglected version of the good life has been receiving greater attention: the psychologically rich life. It is full of complex mental activities, a wide range of intense and deep emotions, and diverse, novel, surprising and interesting experiences. Sometimes they are neither pleasant nor meaningful. However, they are rarely boring.

After all, both happy and meaningful lives can become boring and repetitive. A person with a steady office job, married with children, may be satisfied and find his or her life meaningful and still be bored. Also, the psychologically rich life doesnt necessarily involve economic(经济的) richness. For instance, consider Hesse’s character Goldmund, who has no money but pursues the life of a free spirit.

Research has found psychological richness is related to, but partially different from, both happy and meaningful lives. Psychological richness is related with openness to experience and experiencing both positive and negative emotions more intensely. But is the psychologically rich life the one that people actually want?

In a new study, Oishi and his coworkers asked people in nine countries the degree to which they value a psychologically rich life, a happy life and a meaningful life. They found many people’s self-described ideal lives involve psychological richness. When forced to choose a life, however, the majority chose a happy life and a meaningful life. Even so, a minority of people still favored the psychologically rich life, ranging from 6.7% in Singapore to 16.8% in Germany.

These numbers went up when the desire for a psychologically rich life was measured indirectly. To understand what a person wishes their lives might have been, it is important to explore what people wish they had avoided in their lives. When asked what they regret most and whether undoing this event would have made their lives happier, more meaningful or psychologically richer, about 28% of Americans said undoing the regrettable event would have made their lives psychologically richer.

These findings suggest that while most people try very hard to be happy and have meaning in their lives, a sizable number of people are satisfied living a psychologically rich existence.

As Oishi and his colleagues conclude, “We believe that taking the psychologically rich life seriously will deepen and enrich our understanding of well-being.” At the end of the day, there is no one singularly acceptable path to the good life. You have to find a path that works best for you.

    31. According to the passage, the psychologically rich life _______.

    A. means living a rich life

    B. involves various deep emotions

    C. mixes pleasure with purpose

    D. stresses openness and repetition

    32. What does Oishi’s research suggest?

    A. The Germans prefer psychological richness to a happy life.

    B. Undoing regrettable events has enriched many people’s lives.

    C. A hidden desire for psychological richness exists among some people.

    D. People with psychological richness are likely to describe their lives as ideal.

    33. We can learn from the passage that _______.

    A. purpose outweighs pleasure in terms of significance

    B. the choice of a good life differs from person to person

    C. a positive mindset helps us understand our well-being

    D. we should never be satisfied and always work for the best

    34. What is the main purpose of the article?

    A. To compare different concepts of a good life.

    B. To explain how to live a psychologically rich life.

    C. To talk people into achieving psychological richness.

    D. To draw attention to a less familiar form of a good life.

    四、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共8分,每小题2分)

    A Colourful Puzzle

People often wear clothing with colours that express something about themselves. A happy person might choose to wear a bright yellow shirt. A swimmer might wear a sea-blue dress.

Animals appear in different colours too, but they don’t get to pick what they wear every morning. Scientists have known for a long time about some of the ways animal colouring can be beneficial. They know that some animals’ colours attract mates or show who is boss. Other animals colours blend(融合) in with their environment so that they cannot be seen by their enemies. Still, scientists do not fully understand why blue jays are blue or why rainforest frogs are golden. Now many scientists are working hard to figure out the puzzles of animal colours.

Part of the answer can be found in an animal’s habitat, the place where it lives. It turns out that many animals — especially birds, fish, and reptiles — can see more colours than humans can. These creatures notice colours that stand out in their habitat. For example, forests are mostly green, brown, and yellow. For an animal to be seen by others of its species, it would have to be a different colour than its background. That explains why you can find birds of many shades of blue living in forests.

Another piece of the puzzle lies in what an animal eats. Birds often eat things that have chemicals in them called “carotenoids”(类葫萝卜素). These chemicals are what make tomatoes red and bell peppers(甜椒) bright orange or yellow. When birds eat these foods, the carotenoids affect the colour of their feathers. For example, a cardinal’s bright red feathers will become lighter or darker depending on how many berries it has found to eat.

Some animals do not have any colour at all — but they are not just white; they are transparent(透明的)! Transparent animals live mostly in the ocean. This amazing wonder of nature came about because the animals needed a way to escape their enemies. They are often slow, powerless creatures that would have no way of fighting back if larger animals wanted to eat them. Because there are few places to hide in the ocean, these creatures have to hide in plain sight. A good example of this kind of transparent creature is the jellyfish. A jellyfish’s body is almost all water, so it is very hard to see it floating in the ocean.

Animals come in all kinds of colours. Their colours are caused by many different factors, and most animals will remain the same colour for their whole lives. Think how lucky we are to get to change our feathers every day!

    35. What might a happy person choose to wear?

    36. Why do some animals’ colours blend in with their environment?

    37. According to scientists, what can influence an animal’s colour?

    38. What are transparent animals in the ocean like?

Being kind is very important in our life. Firstly, it can benefit us a lot. Happiness comes from giving, so being kind to others is always rewarding. Secondly, the environment around us can be full of love and warmth because of our kindness.

In my daily life, I’m always friendly and nice to others. When my friends are in trouble, I will try my best to help them out. When my family needs me, I will stand by and support them.

Being kind is the combination of small things you do in our daily life. Take myself as an example: every morning as I enter the school gate, I would always say good morning to the gatekeeper with a big smile. I help my friends to work out their physics and math problems after lunch time. When I finish my running on the playground, I would like to cheer my classmates up. To be kind makes me happy.
