Unexpected friendship
There’s a small brick huse I visit frm time t time. It’s nt the huse that is special, but rather the persn wh lives inside.

shapes f prteins
A research lab called DeepMind has created an artificial intelligence (AI) prgram which has largely slved a cmplicated ( 复杂的) puzzle that has challenged scientists fr 50 years. The success culd lead t huge advances in health care.
DeepMind is a Lndn-based research lab which has made the news several times befre. Its cmputer systems have beaten human experts at games like G, chess, and the vide game StarCraft. But this challenge was cmpletely different.
The new puzzle slved by DeepMind is “prtein flding”(蛋白质折叠). Prteins are tiny, strangely-shaped chains f mlecules(分子)called amin acids
(氨基酸). Prteins make up the bdies f all living things.
A prtein starts as a lng, thin chain that lks a little like a piece f string. But then, based n the amin acids in the chain, it flds int a certain 3D shape. Scientists have fund ver 200 millin different kinds f prteins, but they dn’t knw what shape mst f them take.
The shape f a prtein cntrls hw it acts. Based n their shapes, sme prteins jin tgether like puzzle pieces. In living things, prteins serve many purpses. Sme prteins are used fr building, thers fr carrying messages, thers fr causing chemical reactins.
Knwing hw these prteins are frmed is imprtant. The shape can make the difference between smething that’s helpful and smething that can make yu sick. Many medicines wrk by targeting the shape f a prtein that is causing the illness. But uncvering the secrets behind hw prteins fld has been slw and difficult. In sme cases, it has taken years fr scientists t learn hw ne simple prtein flds.
Nw DeepMind’s AI has shwn that it can ften d that same jb in just a few days.
T cmplete this, the scientists created a prgram called AlphaFld using an AI methd knwn as “Deep Learning”.
In deep learning, cmputer prgrams srt deeply thrugh huge amunts f infrmatin, allwing them t find patterns that humans are ften unable t ntice. These patterns can then be applied in new and surprising ways.
AlphaFld was trained by feeding it infrmatin abut the makeup f 170,000 prteins and hw they flded. Still, AlphaFld is a huge advance and will lead t big changes in science and medicine. DeepMind says it plans t publish a paper n AlphaFld, and is wrking n ways t share the technlgy with ther researchers.
Once AlphaFld was trained, DeepMind entered it in a cntest fr slving prtein flding challenges. AlphaFld did much better than ther cmputer systems. And n tw-thirds f the prteins, it did abut as well as real scientists d in the lab.
The idea that a cmputer can quickly figure ut hw a prtein flds is surprisingly gd news. In the future it culd allw scientists t quickly learn abut the causes f sme diseases, and cme up with medicines and ther tls t fight these diseases.
Thugh AlphaFld can figure ut the shape fr a wide variety f prteins, it’s nt perfect. It’s likely that there will be many prteins that AlphaFld, with its current abilities, wn’t be able t handle.
What can we knw abut prteins frm the passage?
Prteins lk like tiny puzzles.
Medicines wrk ut purpses f prteins.
It’s hard fr scientists t find different prteins.
The shapes f prteins decide the nature f them.
Which f the fllwing statements is TRUE?
AlphaFld can g int human bdies t find prteins.
AlphaFld will influence health care greatly in the future.
DeepMind is ging t sell the technlgy wrldwide.
Scientists are learning abut the causes f different prteins.
Which can be the best title f the passage?

Is imaginatin mre imprtant than knwledge?
Berlin, 1929. The superstar physicist, Albert Einstein talked abut hw he accunted fr his discveries. “I’m enugh f an artist t draw freely n my imaginatin, which I think is mre imprtant than knwledge. Knwledge is limited. Imaginatin encircles the wrld.”
Knwledge versus imaginatin. Einstein’s aphrism ( 格言) reflects a repeated theme in human thught. The ancient dichtmy (对立)between what we knw and what we imagine is fund in every field f human intellectual achievement. Imaginatin ften belngs t artists and geniuses, while knwledge, which results frm a brush with reality, is black-and-white, lgical – the field f peple like accuntants. Our view f which is mre imprtant depends n ur
persnality.
Like many dichtmies, this ne is an versimplificatin. We knw that the brilliance f many great artists was grunded in years f hard training; and that excitingly imaginative museums and highly creative accuntants d exist. In fact, we have always relied n a blend f imaginatin and knwledge. Bth are valuable. What then is the relatinship between them?
Knwledge is ften cnsidered a stepping stne t imaginatin. It is a stred and shared treasury f publicly acceptable thughts, many frzen int physical symbls (written r spken). Knwledge cded, stred and expressed using symbls can be brken up and put tgether again in varius new cmbinatins(结合). It is this act f recmbinatin which underlies the pwer t imagine. Our imaginatin is and must be grunded in ur knwledge. The mre memries we gain, the mre material we have t wrk with, the richer are the fruits f ur imaginatin.
Anther way f thinking abut the balance between imaginatin and knwledge is t cnsider each as private r public, individual r grup. Knwledge strengthens grup bnding, but the rise f new knwledge, fr example, in the sciences can put a grup’s very existence(存在) at risk. Imaginatin can challenge rules and traditins; yet shared acts f imaginatin can als help t strengthen intra-grup bnds. The greatest acts f imaginatin – frm Bach’s Cell Suites t Star Wars mvies – require nt nly creatin but admiratin: they depend n being heard, seen and understd within a cultural envirnment.
In tday’s wrld, we seem increasingly t prefer imaginatin, but that preference is culture-dependent. Imaginatin flurishes when its prducts are highly valued. In ther wrds, the better peple’s lives are, the mre freedm t creativity.
Hwever, during times f difficulty r danger, shared knwledge, als knwn as “culture” r “traditin”, may be valued mre. Resurces previusly put int artistic creativity may be channeled(输送) int effrts t make things better, leading t reduced artistic utput. This brings us t anther view f the relatinship between knwledge and imaginatin: its dynamic nature.
S was Einstein right? Is imaginatin mre imprtant than knwledge? It depends n whm yu ask, what yu ask abut, and when.
Why des the writer mentin Albert Einstein’s aphrism at first?
T shw the imprtance f imaginatin.
T disagree with Albert Einstein’s pinin.
T bring ut the questin f which is mre imprtant.
T explain why Albert Einstein made great discveries.
Accrding t the writer, what’s the relatinship between knwledge and imaginatin?
The knwledge we get is a result f ur imaginatin.
We build imaginatin when we rerganize sme knwledge.
We can better understand the knwledge thrugh imaginatin.
The cmbinatin f knwledge and imaginatin creates pwer.
What can we learn frm the passage?
Bth knwledge and imaginatin can becme a test t a certain grup.
Imaginatin is persnally different while knwledge is shared scially.
Peple are better at imaginatin if they value their culture and traditin.
Artistic creatins increase peples’ admiratin in a cultural envirnment.
The underlined wrd dynamic in Paragraph 6 prbably means .
A. cnstantly changingB. especially cnfusing
C. surprisingly similarD. highly psitive

Bullying by the Numbers
Criminal-justice prfessrs Justin Patchin and Sameer Hinduja surveyed 1,500 kids aged 10 t 17. They reprted that abut ne-third f the kids claimed t have
been cyberbullied. Sue Limber and Rbin Kwalski, researchers and teachers at Clemsn University in Suth Carlina, recently finished a study f 3,767 students in grades six thrugh eight. They fund the mst ppular methd f cyberbullying is instant messaging. Unkind messages in chat rms, emails, and n websites were clse behind. Limber and Kwalski als fund that girls were twice as likely as bys t be the victims(受害者) f attacks.
That’s E-Nugh!
Several states either have laws r are wrking n laws that require schl districts t stp cyberbullying and punish students wh are invlved.
Finding ut the identity f the bully and getting kids t reprt a prblem cause additinal prblems. “It is difficult fr smene wh is being cyberbullied t knw wh is ding it because identities can ften be hidden r wrng,” Limber says. If yu are a victim, she advises, ask an adult fr help.
Ways t avid bullies
Here are the tp three skills kids need t develp in rder t avid schl bullies. First, appear cnfident. Bullies lk fr kids that shw fear and lw self-esteem. Hw victims reply, hw they hld their head, whether they stand tall, even the tne f their vice can signal that a kid might make an easy target( 目 标 ). Secnd, develp friendships. Bullies lk fr kids wh lack cnnectins r wh are alne and target them. Even ne gd friend at schl can greatly help yu ut. Third, Be away frm bullying places. Make sure yu knw that there are sme areas at schl where bullying is mre likely t happen.

16.A research lab called DeepMind has created an artificial intelligence (AI) prgram which has largely slved a cmplicated ( 复杂的) puzzle that has challenged scientists fr 50 years. The success culd lead t huge advances in health care.
DeepMind is a Lndn﹣based research lab which has made the news several times befre. Its cmputer systems have beaten human experts at games like G,chess, and the vide game StarCraft. But this challenge was cmpletely different.
The new puzzle slved by DeepMind is "prtein flding"(蛋白质折叠).Prteins are tiny, strangely﹣shaped chains f mlecules(分子)called amin acids(氨基酸).Prteins make up the bdies f all living things.
A prtein starts as a lng, thin chain that lks a little like a piece f string. But then, based n the amin acids in the chain,it flds int a certain 3 D shape.Scientists have fund ver 200 millin different kinds f prteins, but they dn't knw what shape mst f them take.
The shape f a prtein cntrls hw it acts.Based n their shapes, sme prteins jin tgether like puzzle pieces. In living things, prteins serve many purpses.Sme prteins are used fr building, thers fr carrying messages, thers fr causing chemical reactins.
Knwing hw these prteins are frmed is imprtant. The shape can make the difference between smething that's helpful and smething that can make yu sick. Many medicines wrk by targeting the shape f a prtein that is causing the illness. But uncvering the secrets behind hw prteins fld has been slw and difficult. In sme cases,it has taken years fr scientists t learn hw ne simple prtein flds.
Nw DeepMind's AI has shwn that it can ften d that same jb in just a few days.
T cmplete this, the scientists created a prgram called AlphaFld using an AI methd knwn as "Deep Learning".
In deep learning, cmputer prgrams srt deeply thrugh huge amunts f infrmatin, allwing them t find patterns that humans are ften unable t ntice. These patterns can then be applied in new and surprising ways.
AlphaFld was trained by feeding it infrmatin abut the makeup f 170,000 prteins and hw they flded.Still,AlphaFld is a huge advance and will lead t big changes in science and medicine.DeepMind says it plans t publish a paper n AlphaFld,and is wrking n ways t share the technlgy with ther researchers.
Once AlphaFld was trained,DeepMind entered it in a cntest fr slving prtein flding challenges.AlphaFld did much better than ther cmputer systems. And n tw﹣thirds f the prteins,it did abut as well as real scientists d in the lab.
The idea that a cmputer can quickly figure ut hw a prtein flds is surprisingly gd news.In the future it culd allw scientists t quickly learn abut the causes f sme diseases, and cme up with medicines and ther tls t fight these diseases.
Thugh AlphaFld can figure ut the shape fr a wide variety f prteins,it's nt perfect. It's likely that there will be many prteins that AlphaFld,with its current abilities,wn't be able t handle.

17.Is imaginatin mre imprtant than knwledge?
Berlin,1929.The superstar physicist,Albert Einstein talked abut hw he accunted fr his discveries. "I'm enugh f an artist t draw freely n my imaginatin, which I think is mre imprtant than knwledge.Knwledge is limited.Imaginatin encircles the wrld."
Knwledge versus imaginatin.Einstein's aphrism ( 格言) reflects a repeated theme in human thught. The ancient dichtmy (对立)between what we knw and what we imagine is fund in every field f human intellectual achievement.Imaginatin ften belngs t artists and geniuses, while knwledge, which results frm a brush with reality,is black﹣and﹣white, lgical ﹣﹣ the field f peple like accuntants. Our view f which is mre imprtant depends n ur persnality.
Like many dichtmies, this ne is an versimplificatin. We knw that the brilliance f many great artists was grunded in years f hard training;and that excitingly imaginative museums and highly creative accuntants d exist. In fact,we have always relied n a blend f imaginatin and knwledge.Bth are valuable. What then is the relatinship between them?
Knwledge is ften cnsidered a stepping stne t imaginatin. It is a stred and shared treasury f publicly acceptable thughts, many frzen int physical symbls (written r spken).Knwledge cded, stred and expressed using symbls can be brken up and put tgether again in varius new cmbinatins(结合).It is this act f recmbinatin which underlies the pwer t imagine. Our imaginatin is and must be grunded in ur knwledge. The mre memries we gain, the mre material we have t wrk with, the richer are the fruits f ur imaginatin.
Anther way f thinking abut the balance between imaginatin and knwledge is t cnsider each as private r public, individual r grup.Knwledge strengthens grup bnding, but the rise f new knwledge,fr example,in the sciences can put a grup's very existence(存在) at risk.Imaginatin can challenge rules and traditins;yet shared acts f imaginatin can als help t strengthen intra﹣ grup bnds. The greatest acts f imaginatin – frm Bach's Cell Suites t Star Wars mvies – require nt nly creatin but admiratin:they depend n being heard, seen and understd within a cultural envirnment.
In tday's wrld,we seem increasingly t prefer imaginatin, but that preference is culture﹣dependent.Imaginatin flurishes when its prducts are highly valued. In ther wrds, the better peple's lives are,the mre freedm t creativity.Hwever, during times f difficulty r danger, shared knwledge, als knwn as "culture" r "traditin",may be valued mre.Resurces previusly put int artistic creativity may be channeled(输送) int effrts t make things better, leading t reduced artistic utput. This brings us t anther view f the relatinship between knwledge and imaginatin:its dynamic nature.
S was Einstein right? Is imaginatin mre imprtant than knwledge? It depends n whm yu ask, what yu ask abut, and when.

D.The cmbinatin f knwledge and imaginatin creates pwer.
(3)What can we learn frm the passage? C

B.Imaginatin is persnally different while knwledge is shared scially.
C.Peple are better at imaginatin if they value their culture and traditin.
D.Artistic creatins increase peples' admiratin in a cultural envirnment.
(4)The underlined wrd "dynamic" in Paragraph 6 prbably means A .
A.cnstantly changing

(3)C.推理判断题。根据In tday's wrld,we seem increasingly t prefer imaginatin,but that preference is culture﹣dependent.Imaginatin flurishes when its prducts are highly valued.In ther wrds,the better peple's lives are,the mre freedm t creativity.Hwever,during times f difficulty r danger,shared knwledge,als knwn as "culture" r "traditin",may be valued mre.
