This programme provides a means through which young men and women aged 14 to 20 may decide, by means of actual experience, whether they would like to pursue a law administration career. On November 7, Lewis Pugh completed a one­kilometre swim in the freezing waters of King Edward Cove，off South Georgia in Antarctica. He was wearing only his swimming glasses, cap and speedos!

Pugh is an advocate for our oceans and seas，working to protect these ecosystems with their large diversity of marine (海洋的) life. When asked why he doesn't wear a wetsuit, Lewis says，“I ask world leaders to do everything they can to protect our oceans. Sometimes the steps they need to take are difficult and unpopular. If I'm asking them to be courageous, I must also be. Swimming in a wetsuit would not send the right message.”

It took Pugh about 19 minutes to complete the one­kilometre swim in Antarctica where the water averaged about 1.6 degrees Celsius (摄氏度)．He says that his body can only tolerate about 20 minutes in the freezing waters before it starts shutting down. As he swims, his body temperature steadily drops, which in turn causes his muscle (肌肉) control to drop, slowing him down. When he is done with his swim, his support team rushes him to a hot shower and it takes almost an hour for his body temperature to return to normal.

Doctors and Pugh caution that one must receive months of training to swim in such cold waters. Even expert swimmers who are unused to freezing waters can drown within minutes because of the physical shock experienced by the body. Pugh says he trained for six months before this swim.

This is not the first time that Lewis has swum in dangerous conditions. In 2007，he swam one kilometre in the North Pole to draw attention to the melting Arctic ice due to climate change. In 2015, he swam in the Bay of Whales in Antarctica's Ross Sea as part of his successful campaign to help set up a marine reserve there.

(2022·山东夏津一中模拟)How can having a childlike view of the world help the environment? Danish eco­artist Thomas Dambo combines a talent for recycling with a fairy­tale imagination to bring people worldwide closer to nature.

For the “Guardians of the Seeds” exhibition, Thomas Dambo built five trolls (怪物) from discarded wood materials, which were appointed by Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens (CMBG) for its splendid riverside woodland.

The exhibition composed of the five trolls aims to give visitors an emotional connection with nature that will encourage them to become keepers of it. For the exhibition, Thomas came up with a story that a family of trolls hid 10 golden seeds to protect the old forest. Using a map that's provided, visitors follow clues to find where the seeds are hidden.

Besides using carefully selected recycling materials to produce his works, to challenge himself creatively, the artist allowed for a degree of production on­site. He gave a skinny troll named Birk a beard made from the roots of fallen trees. The fur of another troll Roskva is made from bark. Also, Gro, sitting with her eyes closed in a yoga pose, has a tongue made out of a nearby deserted planter.

“Thomas wants people to interact with them，” says Gretchen, president of CMBG. “He wants it to be a journey of discovery where you're walking along and all of a sudden this big magical being appears in front of you. These are friendly, happy trolls. They're not scary, mean trolls.”

Thomas hopes that “Guardians of the Seeds” gives viewers the same joy he gets from an occupation that he compares to a hobby. He says too many people lose their playfulness in their adult life. The key quality of his work is just its playfulness. One of his trolls sits on a real car on a hillside, appearing to cheerfully ride it. He wants to reactivate a childlike imagination in adults so they begin to see trash as objects that can be repurposed in practical and even picturesque ways. And he loves to entertain kids, too.

Nowadays, Mr Dambo gets a kick out of seeking waste everywhere, hoping to find more stuff he could refashion into something amazing.

Upright farming is a hugely promising agricultural technique that aims to produce more food to meet the growing population on our limited planet. Techniques include growing in vertical frames (垂向框架) or even in high­rise farms while moving farms into urban areas, and producing nutritious crops without topsoil.

Vertical farmers plant crops in nutrient­rich water, so plants can be raised without soil. They also grow plants using water from fish tanks, or using nutrient water mist systems that reduce water use by more than 90 per cent, which was a technique developed by NASA as a way for astronauts to grow in space and feed themselves without soil while preserving precious water supplies. All of these soilless growing techniques use less or no chemicals, and recycle water with less waste. Plants can be sown and harvested year­round, free from bad weather conditions such as drought or flooding.

“This is the farming of the future，” said Paul Myers, co­founder of vertical farming enterprise Farm Urban. “Chemical­free and moving from the traditional horse and tractor agriculture that is steadily destroying the planet to a more sustainable approach.”

The global vertical farming market is expected to be six times bigger in 2026 than it is today. This is fueled in part by rising demand for organic, chemical­free foods, but also by countries looking to increase their food security and cut down on imports — the UK for example uses more than 70 per cent of its land mass for agriculture but imports more than half of its food.

As the vertical farming industry expands, it is worth noting that it has limitations — it only works for some crops, and urban locations can be expensive.

Given the high price of housing, many of us are living in smaller spaces than we'd like.

However, living in small spaces is not that bad; it has some advantages. They're cheaper to decorate. It can take thousands of dollars worth of decoration simply to make a large space look inviting.   1   Instead of many pieces of large, expensive furniture, you only need a few to make your style sing. You'll have plenty of money left for other things.

They're easier to clean. This must be one of your favourite things about living in a small space. The bigger the space, the longer it takes to organise and tidy up.   2   That's why small spaces are welcomed by those who like being surrounded by order and cleanliness and don't want to spend a ton of time and energy in keeping them that way.

  3   It takes a lot to pay for heating, cooling and electricity, which can also cost much energy. When you compare the electricity bill of someone living in 500 square feet with that of someone living in 3，000 square feet, the difference can be great. We use less energy and produce less waste when we live in small spaces.   4 

They're easier to personalise. Ever have you walked into a large home that feels more like a museum than the small home of someone you know? It's usually not the most familiar or welcoming atmosphere.   5   It is much easier to decorate a small home in your own style.
