Medha Pappula, an eighth-grader at Brambleton Middle School, is using her skill set to solve a problem — bullying. She recently earned an award from National Bullying Prevention Center (NBPC) for her anti-bullying(反霸凌） efforts in software development and animation (动画).

Pappula, 13, said she discovered that a classmate had experienced cyberbullying, which was painful for her to learn about. “Even though I didn’t experience it, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, even my worst enemy,” Pappula said.

Then she developed a program that recognizes when digital and text-based messages include bullying language. The program takes a message, and then recognizes signs of bullying and gives a rating to the cyberbullying, the teen said. If the rating is high, she said, “the program can be used to carry out things like removing that message or reporting it.”

Pappula first designed and tested the program for Discord, a popular community-based messaging platform (平台), and said she plans to develop it for even bigger platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

In addition to this program, the NBPC awarded Pappula for a three-minute animated video about Unity Day, which she created and shared on YouTube last October. Unity Day, according to the video, was started by the NBPC in 2011 to raise bullying awareness among school-age children. Schools encourage their students to wear orange on Unity Day, as it is “a color that is connected with safety,” the website reads.

Pappula visited different websites to develop her animation skills several years ago. She spent more than a month creating her 2-D animated video using an animation software called Krita. The effort paid off, as nearly 6,000 people have already viewed the “Unity Day” video on YouTube. Along with being posted to the NBPC webpage, her animation was also shared by Cartoon Network. Moving forward, Pappula hopes to continue to work with the NBPC and to use her skills to lift those around her.

Concerts（音乐会） and choir practice may be impossible during lockdown(封城）, but in the face of difficulty people are turning to the power of song more than ever and virtual choirs are widespread（普遍） online. More than 1,000 NHS staff members across the country have joined the online NHS Chorus（合唱）-19 to improve their health and connect with others.

Anna Lapwood, the conductor of the Pembroke College choir in Cambridge, never expected NHS Chorus-19 to become so popular when two of her members suggested setting something up for NHS staff to improve morale (士气). Within 24 hours 300 people had signed up. She leads the sessions (演奏会) on Facebook live from her flat each week.

“It’s upsetting for me because I can’t hear anyone else, but what’s lovely is that people can comment in real time, and so you develop a sense of who they are and it does almost feel like a real choir practice,” she said.

A choir member, Ellie Walder, a junior doctor, has been working on dealing with COVID-19 over the past few weeks. “It’s so nice to just take some time for myself, do something that is not part of work, just for fun,” she said. “We’ve all had roles in this pandemic (流行病) so to know that other people are going through the same thing and we’re all singing together is really nice.”

Hull NHS Choir, set up in 2014, changed its monthly rehearsals (排练) to weekly online sessions during lockdown as it decided people would need the choir more.

“I don’t think people expected to enjoy online rehearsals, but it’s quite freeing to be able just to sing. And it gives people a sense of achievement,” said Lucy Vere, the head of organisation development at Hull University teaching hospitals and a co-founder of the choir. “The social aspect (方面) of work has really gone because of social distancing（隔离） and I think we’re able to keep contact in that 45 minutes.”

While telling others your zodiac ( 星座), you are being evaluated ( 评估). Evaluations are being made about your luck, your personality, future development and how you will do in a given year. According to the BBC and Chinese government reports, January 2015 saw a peak of cesarean sections ( 剖腹产术高峰). Why? That was the last month for the Year of the Horse. It's not because they like horses so much, it's because they try to avoid having unlucky Goat babies.  

Tiger is another unwelcome animal, because of its dangerous and unstable ( 不稳定的) personality. Many Chinese places saw a great decline of birthrate during those years.

Perhaps one should consider zodiac in a different way, as those Tiger and Goat babies will face much less competition. Maybe they are the lucky ones. I went through the Forbes (福布斯) top 300 richest people in the world, and it's interesting to see the most unwelcome two animals, the Goat and Tiger, are at the top of the list, even higher than the Dragon. So maybe we should consider that it's much better to have less competition.
