In June, 11-year-old Nigerian ballet dancer Anthony Mmesoma Madu was filmed barefoot, spinning and leaping gracefully in the air and landing in concrete, rain puddles (水坑). Just a few short months later, he has become an Internet star and gained a famous scholarship in America.
Madu thought he was being recorded for a study session by his ballet instructor, instead, the short video of him practicing his moves was posted on social media and has been shared widely across the world, with some of his fans including Hollywood actors Cynthia Erivo and Viola Davis.
His dancing also caught the attention of Cynthia Harvey, the artistic director of the ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School of Dance in New York. Harvey was so impressed by his talent that she tracked him down and offered him a scholarship with the American Ballet Theatre where he will attend a summer school in 2021.
Madu says his interest in ballet developed after watching Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses, a 2006 cartoon about 12 princesses who share a passion for the dance. "When I was watching the cartoon, I told my mum that I want to do ballet." he said.
He eventually got the chance to learn the dance after relocating to Ojo, a suburb (郊区) of Lagos with his mother, where they met Daniel Owoseni Ajala, founder of the Leap of Dance Academy. Ajala founded the dance academy in 2017 and has been teaching ballet for free to children who are unable to pay for a dance education since then.
When the self-taught instructor learned of Madu's desire to dance, he said he encouraged Madu's mother to let him sign up. It was during one of their sessions that he recorded Madu's dance video, but he never imagined that it would circulate rapidly.
"The video wasn't something we imagined to come out the way it did. It was just something that was supposed to show corrections of movements. It was bigger than I imagined, and I started getting calls. Celebrities were posting us," he said.
24.What can we know about Anthony Mmesoma Madu?
A.He decided to apply for a scholarship.
B.He became one of Viola Davis' big fans.

D.He impressed many people by his dancing.

Throughout history, music spread among people of different cultures. In today’s technological advanced society, however, people spread music online, sometimes without an artist’s permission. This can lead to many problems, and music companies are now cracking down on this practice. Sharing music online without permission is theft.
Sharing music online prevents recording companies from making money from their efforts. They say that sharing music online has resulted in a huge drop in profits and sales over the past 10 years. People who find music for free online are not paying for CDs or every piece of music downloaded. To truly understand the influence of music piracy (盗版行为) on creators, one must understand how many people are involved in the recording process. For the sale of each album, profits must be shared among musicians, sound engineers, music producers, managers, advertisers, and the company selling the product. Many people believe sharing music only affects the recording artist, but the reality is that sharing hurts business for all companies involved.
There are many people who don’t see the harm in sharing music online and even think they have the right to do it. One online blogger states that he originally paid for an entire CD and that he should be able to do with the material whatever he wants. While he may have legally paid for the music, he does not have the right to share it without permission, which means people like the blogger are thieves.
Although we don’t spread music the same way we did before, there’s no doubt that people around the world love to share music. However, Internet piracy will prevent musicians from continuing producing albums for fear of theft. Therefore, if people want to continue listening to their favorite artists, they need to buy their music so that artists will make enough profits to continue their music careers.
28.What does the underlined phrase “cracking down on” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A.Bringing up carefully.

29.What can be learned from Paragraph 3?

B.Once paying for a CD, you can treat it at will.
C.Many people have difficulty understanding CDs.
D.People who share music online without permission can be called thieves.
30.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Sharing music online affects a lot of people.
B.Artists are taking action to protect their right.
C.Sharing music online increases sales of music CDs.
D.A person who buys a CD has the right to share it online with others.
31.What is the author’s attitude toward music piracy?
A.Indifferent. B.Favorable. C.Disapproval. D.Skeptical.

A new Northwestern University study reaffirms the importance of getting a good night’s sleep. By examining fruit flies’ brain activity and behavior, the researchers found that deep sleep has the power to clear waste from the brain. This waste potentially includes poisonous proteins that may lead to neurodegenerative (神经退化) diseases. “Waste clearance could be important, in general, for maintaining brain health or for preventing neurodegenerative diseases,” said Dr. Allada, senior author of the study. “Waste clearance may occur during wake and sleep but is greatly strengthened during deep sleep.”
Although fruit flies seem very different from humans, the neurons (神经元) that govern flies’ sleep-wake cycles are strikingly similar to our own. For this reason, fruit flies have become a well-studied model organism for sleep and neurodegenerative diseases.
In this current study, Allada and his team examined Proboscis (针状喙) Extension Sleep, a deep-sleep stage in fruit flies, which is similar to deep, slow-wave sleep in humans. The researchers discovered that, during this stage fruit flies repeatedly extend and move back their proboscises. “This kind of movement moves fluids possibly to the fly version of kidneys (肾),” Allada said. “Our study shows that this promotes waste clearance and aids in injury recovery.”
When Allada’s team disturbed flies’ deep sleep, the flies were less able to clear the waste from their systems and were more likely to be influenced by injuries.
Allada said this study brings us closer to understanding the mystery of why all organisms need sleep. All animals, especially those in the wild, are incredibly weak when they sleep, but research increasingly shows that the benefits of sleep, including crucial waste removal, are greater than this increased weakness.
32.How did the researchers draw the conclusion of their study?
A.By working out the result by chance.
B.By predicting the result from the old data.
C.By making observation and analysis.
D.By making a range of comparisons.
33.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 probably refer to?
A.The disturbance of fruit flies’ deep sleep.
B.The governing of fruit flies’ sleep-wake cycles.
C.The moving of fluids to the fruit flies’ kidneys.
D.The extension and moving of fruit flies’ proboscises.
34.What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph?
A.The fact that all organisms need sleep.
B.The application of the result of the study.
C.The disadvantages of the sleep of animals.
D.The great value of mankind’s and animals’ sleep.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Studies on Proboscis Extension Sleep
B.Deep Sleep Takes Out the Brain Trash
C.Different Functions of Waste Clearance
D.Similarities of Sleep-Wake Cycles Between Fruit Flies and Humans

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My teenage son, Jordan, always complained about having to be home earlier than all his friends. He would tell me that he was already seventeen, but still had a curfew (宵禁). He believed he was practically an adult. I pointed out that he was not an adult as he was still in high school.
“You don’t trust me!” he yelled. Before I continued, he rolled his eyes, slammed the door and walked away. I sighed. How could I make Jordan see that I only wanted to keep him safe?
I decided to go for a walk, hoping the December air would clear my head. I opened the front door and nearly stepped on her: a small black cat, just like a meatball. “Hi, Meatball,” I said, bringing her into my arms. I walked back in, touching her neck gently. Meatball seemed happy enough to come in the house, but after an hour or two, she sat by the door, meowing to go back outside.
“Why won’t she just stay in with us all the time?” Nathan, my youngest son asked.
I explained to him that she was happy here but she liked being able to come and go as she pleased.
“That must be nice,” Jordan muttered from the other room, complaining why the cat, not him, could come and go. He even asked me to give Meatball a curfew.
Meatball became a regular.
One night, temperatures were unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, meowing to go outside.
I shook my head at her, afraid that she might freeze to death. She stared at me and meowed again. I patted her head, “I know you’re not happy, but it’s for your own good.”
“Mom’s not being mean to you,” Nathan told the cat. “She’s just trying to keep you from turning into a frozen meatball.” We both laughed at his joke.
The next morning, I couldn’t find Meatball. I asked the kids if anyone had seen her.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Housework, I can do it
To promote the awareness of students’ tidiness and family responsibility, an activity named “Housework, I can do it” was held. In response to the activity sponsored by our school, I carried out my housework plan last weekend, ranging from tidying up rooms to cooking meals.
Early in the morning, I removed unwanted items and cleaned the house until it was spotless. At almost eleven, I prepared a lunch, fried rice, for which my parents praised me. Tired as I was, I felt so proud.
Through the involvement in the household chores, not only have I established a sense of family responsibility, but also I have fully understood that doing housework is of great meaning.
67.
Jordan nodded, “I let her out last night.” My mouth dropped open. “She was outside all night?” I was so furious, “It was freezing and she could die!” Jordan choked back his words, stunned. I grabbed my coat and rushed outside. Jordan followed, fear welling up in his eyes. Several minutes later, the poor thing was found, shaking and curling into a tiny ball. I picked her up, unsure whether she was alive or dead. Jordan was scared, “We need a vet! Now!”
As I drove to the animal hospital, Jordan sat in the back, holding Meatball inside his coat. I could hear him talking to the cat, apologizing repeatedly. Luckily, the vet saved Meatball. Seeing her eyes open, Jordan stroked her head, all tears. Then, surprisingly, he turned to me. He apologized for what he had done. “I know you just want to keep me safe,” he murmured. I felt a lump in my throat. He rubbed Meatball’s back, “Looks like we are both going to observe the curfew. It’s for our own good.”
