There should be a waterfall at the end of every hike. Here are some waterfalls you need in your life.
    Vernal Fall, Yosemite, California
This 317-foot fall is on the Merced River and runs all the year, though it is the weakest at the end of summer and most splendid during spring. You’ll likely get wet from the waterfall mist. So you may as well wear some waterproof clothing.
    Ruby Falls, Chattanooga, Tennessee
America’s deepest cave and largest underground waterfalls, Ruby Falls, hidden underground within a cave, are a popular tourist attraction in Tennessee. For the brave, Ruby Falls offers lantern tours on Friday nights, where tourists are led to the falls by a lantern-lit path.
Sliding Rock, Pisgah Forest, North Carolina
Sliding Rock is one of the most interesting waterfalls in the world. The family-friendly landmark offers an interactive adventure. If you’re traveling with children, your safest bet is to visit during summer weekends, when there is often a lifeguard on duty. The gentle incline (坡) makes this a fun and safe activity for the little ones.
    Alamere Falls, Bolinas, California
Located along the Point Reyes National Seashore within Marin County, Alamere Falls is a tidefall — meaning it runs directly into the ocean. You can enjoy the falls all four seasons, but it is the best after winter and spring rainfall. After parking your car, you’ll hike along the Crest Trail to Wildcat Camp, where many visitors choose to stay overnight. If you’re visiting during warm months, take a dip in the nearby Bass Lake.
21.What is special for Ruby Falls?
    A.People can enjoy swimming there.
B.They are the largest falls in the world.
C.There are more tourists than the other three falls.
D.The brave can enjoy lantern tours deep in the cave.
22.Where is the fall suitable for a family with small children?
    A.Bolinas. B.Yosemite.
    C.Pisgah Forest. D.Chattanooga.
23.What do Vernal Fall and Alamere Falls have in common?
    A.Water runs the whole year.
    B.Summer is their best season.
C.They are both close to the sea.
    D.They provide free parking lots.
    B
An international team has identified two areas in China where the scale of carbon dioxide absorption by new forests has been underestimated. Taken together, these areas account for a little over 35% of China's entire land carbon “sink”, the group says.
The two previously under-appreciated carbon sink areas are centred on China's southwest, in Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi; and its northeast, particularly Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces.
These provinces have established a pattern of rapid afforestation of progressively larger regions, with provincial forest areas increasing by between 0.04 million and 0.44 million hectares per year over the past 10 to 15 years.
“Bold scientific statements must be supported by massive amounts of evidence and this is what we have done in this study.” Professor Paul Palmer, a co-author from Edinburgh University told the BBC.
“We have collected together a range of ground-based and satellite data-driven evidence to form a consistent and robust narrative about the Chinese carbon cycle.”
China's increasing leafiness has been evident for some time. Billions of trees have been planted in recent decades, to deal with desertification and soil loss, and to establish vibrant timber and paper industries.
Data from NASA Earth satellites shows that human activity in China and India dominate this greening of the planet, thanks to tree planting and agriculture. Satellite data (2000—2017) reveal a greening pattern that is strikingly remarkable in China and India and overlaps with croplands world-wide.
China alone accounts for 25% of the global net increase in leaf area with only 6.6% of global vegetated area.
24.According to the passage, which of the following is true about the two newly-identified areas?
A.They are based on Southeast and Northwest China.
B.Their forests have absorbed over 35% of China’s carbon dioxide.
C.They take up over one third of China’s entire land carbon sink areas.
D.Their forest areas have increased from 0.04 to 0.44 million hectares per year.
25.China has planted more trees in recent decades in order to _________.
A.keep the soil fertile B.set up more factories
C.turn the deserts into green land D.prevent useful land from changing into desert
26.The passage is most probably taken from _________.
A.a science fiction B.a news website C.an academic report D.a travelling brochure
27.Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A.Carbon Sink Areas in China B.China Aims High in Afforestation
C.China and India Lead the Way in Greening D.China's Forest Carbon Absorption Underestimated
    C
The term “bird brain” is frequently used to describe a person’s lack of intelligence and good decision-making ability. However, some scientists believe it should be considered a compliment (恭维), given that many birds can perform tasks that were once considered uniquely within humans. These include manufacturing and using tools, solving problems. and planning for future needs. Now, Griffin, an African Grey parrot, has proved that birds may even have better visual memories than human adults and children.
The study, led by Hrag Pailian, a postdoctoral (博士后)fellow at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, had the parrot compete in the shell game against twenty-one undergraduate students and twenty-one 6-to-8-year-old children. For those not familiar, the popular challenge involves hiding a small object under one of three, or more, upturned cups or nutshells, which are moved around. Participants are required to accurately identify the cup or nutshell under which the object lies.
The Harvard team began by placing different-colored pom-poms (绒球)under four cups and moving them randomly around. To make the task more challenging, the researchers required participants to track two, three, and four pom-poms at the same time. The cup positions were moved between zero to four times far each of the combinations. Griffin and the undergraduate students conducted 120 tests, while the children did 36.
An analysis of the results showed that Griffin outperformed the 6-to-8-year-olds across all levels on average. Even more impressive, the “bird brain” performed as well as, or slightly better than, the 21 Harvard students on 12 of the 14 trials! It was only in the final two tests, which had the most pom-poms and most movement, that the parrot lagged behind the adults. However, Griffin’s performance never dipped below that of the children. “Think about it: Grey parrot outperforms Harvard undergraduates. That’s pretty awesome.” said a delighted Pailian.
28.What is a person with “bird brain” usually like?
    A.Clever. B.Stupid.
    C.Unique. D.Active.
29.What do we know about the test?
    A.Easy. B.Normal.
    C.Complex. D.Accurate.
30.Which of the following words can be used to replace “outperformed”?
A.did better than B.did as good as
C.did worse than D.did as bad as
    31.Who has better visual memory?
    A.The undergraduate. B.The child.
C.The postdoctoral fellow. D.The grey parrot.
    D
Migraine is a disease that has a number of symptoms (症状), including head pain that can stick around from four hours to several days. While migraines can happen partly because of genetic (基因的) problems, attacks may happen by chance, set off by a cause in the environment.
One common cause is food, and some common dietary causes include alcohol, salt, sugar, chocolate, and caffeine. But there are many others, and scientists continue to identify more. Last year, for example, a Brazilian study found that watermelons brought on a headache within minutes in about 30 percent of the participants.
Some new researches are looking at which foods and what kinds of diets can prevent or lessen migraines. A new study published last year by a team of researchers found that a diet higher in fish oils rather than vegetable oils helped people ease their headaches. In the study, those on a diet lower in vegetable oil and higher in fatty fish had a 30 to 40 percent reduction in total headache hours per day, serious headache hours per day, and overall headache days per month compared to the control group.
Tanya Kamka had suffered weekly migraines for most of her life. Then, in her 50s, she joined the NIH diet experiment and increased her intake of fish. After only a few months, “I haven’t had a migraine, not even a mild one, in over two years.” she says.
For others, the solution comes from plants, not fish. A 60-year-old man joined a study on the food-migraine link and turned to a diet, which includes a lot of dark, leafy greens. After two months he was experiencing only one migraine a month instead of the 18 to 24 a month he’d suffered before.
Clearly, people with migraines react to food in very different ways. What works for one person may not work for another.
32.What do we know about migraine from paragraph 1?
A.It is related to sleep time. B.It never runs in the family.
C.It lasts for at least three hours. D.It can be caused by the environment.
33.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The length of migraine. B.Foods that lead to migraine.
C.The most common cause of migraine. D.A Brazilian study about migraine.
34.What can lessen migraines according to a new study published last year?
    A.Fish oils. B.Vegetable oils.
C.All kinds of fat. D.Various Vegetables.
35.Which is the author’s opinion about the effect of food on migraines?
A.It varies from person to person. B.It can only stay for a short time.
C.It depends on the age of a patient. D.It is connected to how much one takes.

Cathy, my mom, whose pet phrase (口头禅) was “Never give up”, was our family’s beacon of positivity. It was not a title she earmed without concerted (一致的) effort, however. When she was only thirty years old, her husband was killed in a car accident and she was left to raise me alone.
My mom could have lived under a black cloud. Instead, she challenged herself to find joy every day. Leading by example, Mom taught me just how much one could accomplish with a positive attitude. She has taken the same approach in her relationship with her grandchildren-Max and Charley.
One hot summer afternoon, my mom and her two grandsons, having spent two hours building sand castles and collecting sea shells on the beach, sank into their beach chairs to have a rest. How they longed for delicious ice cream to cool themselves, especially the two kids!
Suddenly, my mom heard the familiar loud clang (叮当声) of the ice-cream man’s bell from her beach chair. She turned quickly and saw him briefly, spotting his distinctive green shirt and catching the gleam of his waving bell before he turned and disappeared over the dunes (沙丘).
Happily, the ice-cream man’s visit was a daily occurrence at the beach, although the lag time between the sound of his bell and the departure of his truck was not long. One must be quick enough to catch him to buy the ice cream.
Max and Charley were in great disappointment when they didn’t catch him in time that day because they really wanted to have a taste of those cool ice-creams. That was until my mom’s eyes sparkled and she said to the kids, “Never give up!” She explained to the kids that the truck might be gone, but they should be able to catch him up at its next stop. And the kids agreed immediately.

1.M: Celia, you see those girls over there? They need another player for a basketball game. Would you like to join them?
W: Seems like it’s a game for fun. Sure, I’ll be there in a minute.
2.M: Who do you think should take part in the English speaking contest, Anna?
W: Lisa is good at organizing her ideas, but Jenny has better pronunciation and can speak English more fluently. So, I think Jenny has a better chance to win.
3.W: I’ve never had an English teacher who gets ideas across as clearly as he does. Mr. Kermode is pretty cool.
M: Yes. He loves poetry and he’s also into skateboarding, a bit surprising for a teacher.
4.W:Hello, David. This is Daisy. I’m standing under the clock. Can you see me?
M:No, there are too many people here. I’m near the entrance to the museum. I can see a man selling balloons.
W:Okay, I can see him, too. Let’s meet there.
5.M: Do you know how much it would be to rent a two-bedroom flat in Dalton?
W: Yeah, you should be able to get something reasonable for 850 pounds per month. That’s what people typically pay. You certainly wouldn’t want to pay more than 900 pounds.
    M: What?
6-7.M:I can’t stand places where you have to share the beach with thousands of other people and everyone speaks English.
    W:Oh,I don’t mind that.
M:Oh,I do.I never go to places like that.I like to get right away from all the tourists,go somewhere that’s really quiet and peaceful, like an island or something, where no one speaks English.
W:What’s wrong with people speaking English?I like meeting people when I’m on holiday.I like places with a good night life, and plenty of people around and...well,you know, where you can have a good time.
8-10.M: Hey, Tina. This is Sam. How’s it going?
W: Pretty good, Sam. How are you?
M: Great! Do you want to go to the movies tonight?
W: Sorry, we don’t go out on Saturdays. Tom and I always stay at home and watch TV.
M: That’s OK. Is Tom there now?
W: Yes, but he is talking on his cell phone with his sister, Julie. Do you remember her?
M: Yes, of course. She lives in Seattle right now, right?
W: Right, but she’s in town now. She stays with a friend for a few days.
M: That’s nice. Tell her I say hello.
    W: Sure.
15-17.W: I visited Citylights this morning. There were too many books for kids there. I just didn't know which one to buy.
M: I never go downtown to buy books. I usually visit KidsMustRead. com if I want a book for Henry. It is a website that helps parents to encourage their children to read.
W: That sounds great. But are the books good?
M: Yes. The books all have been read by its founder, Priya Iyer, and none of them contain inappropriate content.
W: So are the books on it expensive?
M: Don't worry. All resources on it are free for parents to download.
W: I'll certainly give it a try tonight.
M: Believe me, you'll love it!
18-20.Deep Springs is an American college. It is an unusual college. It is high in the white mountains in California not in a college town. The campus is a collection of old buildings with no beautiful classrooms. The only collegelike thing about Deep Springs is its library. Students can borrow from the 17,000 books 24 hours a day. The library is never crowded as there are only 24 excellent boy students at the college. And there are only 5 professors. These teachers believe in the idea of the college. They are not well paid. In fact, their salaries are only about 9,000 dollars a year. The college gives the teachers and students something more important than money. There is no place like Deep Springs. Students are there to learn and they cannot run away from problems because there is no place to escape to. At most colleges, students can close their books and go to a film. They can go out to restaurants or to parties, but the students in Deep Springs have completely different activities. They can talk to each other or to their teachers. They might go out for a walk in the desert. Deep Springs is far from the world of restaurants and cinemas. There is not even a television set on the campus.

根据第二部分Ruby Falls, Chattanooga, Tennessee 中的“For the brave, Ruby Falls offers lantern tours on Friday nights, where tourists are led to the falls by a lantern-lit path. (对于勇敢的人来说,Ruby Falls在周五晚上提供灯笼旅游,灯笼照亮的道路将游客引导到瀑布) ”可知,Ruby Falls的特别之处是勇敢的人可以享受山洞里的灯笼旅行。故选D项。
22.细节理解题。根据第三部分Sliding Rock, Pisgah Forest, North Carolina 中的“If you’re traveling with children, your safest bet is to visit during summer weekends, when there is often a lifeguard on duty. The gentle incline (坡)makes this a fun and safe activity for the little ones. (如果你和孩子们一起旅行,你最保险的选择是在夏天的周末去那里玩,那时经常有救生员值班。坡度小的斜坡使划水成为一个对年龄小的孩子来说有趣又安全的活动)”可知,Pisgah Forest适合带孩子的家庭。故选C项。
23.细节理解题。根据第一部分Vernal Fall, Yosemite, California 中的“This 317-foot fall is on the Merced River and runs all the year(Merced River有317英尺高,并且全年流淌)”和第四部分Alamere Falls, Bolinas, California中的“You can enjoy the falls all four seasons(你在一年四季都可以享受瀑布)”可知,这两个瀑布全年流淌。故选A项。
    24-27.CDBD
根据第一段“An international team has identified two areas in China where the scale of carbon dioxide absorption by new forests has been underestimated. Taken together, these areas account for a little over 35% of China's entire land carbon “sink”, the group says. (一个国际团队在中国确定了两个新森林吸收二氧化碳的规模被低估的地区。该组织称,这些地区加起来占中国全部土地碳汇面积的35%多一点)”可知,关于这两个新确定的地区的说法中,C选项“它们占中国陆地碳汇面积的三分之一以上”正确。故选C。
25.细节理解题。根据倒数第三段“Billions of trees have been planted in recent decades, to deal with desertification and soil loss, and to establish vibrant timber and paper industries.
根据第一段“An international team has identified two areas in China where the scale of carbon dioxide absorption by new forests has been underestimated. Taken together, these areas account for a little over 35% of China's entire land carbon “sink”, the group says.
    28-31.BCAD 29.C 30.A 31.D
根据文章第一段内容“The term ‘bird brain’ is frequently used to describe a person’s lack of intelligence and good decision-making ability.”
根据文章第二段内容关于这项测试的介绍“…had the parrot compete in the shell game against twenty-one undergraduate students and twenty-one 6-to-8-year-old children. For those not familiar, the popular challenge involves hiding a small object under one of three, or more, upturned cups or nutshells, which are moved around. Participants are required to accurately identify the cup or nutshell under which the object lies.(……
分析划线单词所在句“An analysis of the results showed that Griffin outperformed the 6-to-8-year-olds across all levels on average.”可知,句中包含“将Griffin的表现与6到8岁儿童的表现相比”的含义,结合后文“However, Griffin’s performance never dipped below that of the children.” 好”含义,与选项A“did better than”表达含义一致。故选A项。
根据文章最后一段内容“An analysis of the results showed that Griffin outperformed the 6-to-8-year-olds across all levels on average. Even more impressive, the ‘bird brain’ performed as well as, or slightly better than, the 21 Harvard students on 12 of the 14 trials!”
文章第一段讲到“While migraines can happen partly because of genetic (基因的) problems, attacks may happen by chance, set off by a cause in the environment. (虽然偏头痛的发生部分是因为遗传问题,但发作可能是偶然发生的,是由环境中的原因引起的。)”可知环境可能导致偏头痛,故选D。
33.主旨大意题。文章第二段讲到“One common cause is food, and some common dietary causes include alcohol, salt, sugar, chocolate, and caffeine. But there are many others, and scientists continue to identify more. (一个常见的原因是食物,一些常见的饮食原因包括酒精、盐、糖、巧克力和咖啡因。但还有许多其他的,科学家们继续发现更多。)”可知第二段主要介绍导致偏头痛的一些食物,故选B。
34.细节理解题。文章第三段讲到“A new study published last year by a team of researchers found that a diet higher in fish oils rather than vegetable oils helped people ease their headaches. (一组研究人员去年发表的一项新研究发现,饮食中鱼油含量高于植物油含量有助于缓解头痛。)”可知去年的新研究发现吃鱼油可以缓解头痛,故选A。
35.推理判断题。文章最后一段讲到“Clearly, people with migraines react to food in very different ways. What works for one person may not work for another. (显然,偏头痛患者对食物的反应方式截然不同。对一个人有效的东西可能对另一个人无效。)”可知食物对偏头痛的疗效因人而异,故选A。
    36-40.GFDCE
36.根据上文“The wrong donations end up costing charities precious dollars just to store leftovers (积压物资 ), which is why clothing may not be the best use of your donation efforts.”
37.根据上文“As families influenced by a disaster try to protect their children from the effects, they try to provide children with toys, snacks, juices, candies, and other comfort items, particularly in post-disaster environments.”(当受灾的家庭努力保护孩子不受影响时,他们尽量给孩子们提供玩具、零食、果汁、糖果或其它带来安慰的物品,尤其在灾后的环境中)和下文“Shelters will accept these donations and give them out properly.”(收容所会接收这些捐赠,然后用适当的方式分发出去)可推知,设空处应建议捐赠者买一些玩具给孩子们。
38.根据上文“If you are trained in disaster response, you can contact your local emergency services and the Red Cross to see if they need volunteers. Let them know your abilities.”(如果你接受过灾难应对方面的培训,你可以与当地的应急服务机构和红十字会取得联系,看他们是否需要志愿者。
根据下文的“Time and comfort are the two most important things you  can give for free. Spend time listening to the victims (受灾群众) with an understanding ear. You can bring books and read to the children.”(时间和安慰是你能免费给与的最重要的两样东西。
40.根据上文“Become a volunteer now for the future. Besides donating money, volunteering is the best way to give.”(为了未来,现在就成为一名志愿者。除了捐钱,做志愿者是最好的给予方式)和下文“The Red Cross and charity organizations prefer a trained group of volunteers who can jump into action.”(红十字会和慈善组织更喜欢训练有素的志愿者队伍,他们可以立即行动起来。)

故填to。
故填who
故填As。

    Dear Robin,
I'm writing to tell you about one of my recent traveling experiences. In order to raise our awareness of environmental protection, our school organized an eco-travel for us last Friday.
Early in the morning, we boarded the school bus and headed for a lake in the suburbs. We talked and sang happily along the way. Upon arrival, we were deeply touched by the amazing beauty of the lake, surrounded by thick forests. The air was so fresh, and the water was crystal clear. We couldn't help jumping with joy and taking pictures.
Surely, as the saying goes,“Green mountains and clear water are as good as mountains of gold and silver.” Through the trip, we have come to realize the importance of protecting the environment.
    All the best wishes.
    Yours sincerely,
    Li Hua

Max tried his best to lead this running team. Again, they heard a slight clang of the ice-cream man’s bell! “Be quick, Charley! The ice-cream might be over there!” Max yelled happily. Unfortunately, as they kept running, the sound gradually disappeared. So exhausted as they were, the two grandsons stopped, wiping the sweat from their faces. “Dear, never give up! Maybe the man who heard our yell is waiting for us at the square!”, my mom kept running.
Max and Charley, encouraged by my mom, ran another three blocks. Just as my mom had predicted, the truck was parked at the square, where several kids were queueing for ice-cream. When it was in their turn, Max said loudly, “Three ice-cream Sir!” Later, they sat down under the shade of a tree. Scoop by scoop, they enjoyed the most delicious ice-cream in the world. Also, it was from this experience that Max and Charley were taught the lesson of persisting and never giving up.
