Harper Lee (1926—2016) was an American novelist widely known for To Kill a Mockingbird (published in 1960), which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has become a classic of modern American literature. The 1962 film adaptation starring Gregory Peck won three Academy Awards.
For decades, the book was Lee’s only major work of published fiction, but it was hugely influential for generations of U.S. readers. It has sold more than 10 million copies, and is one of the most widely taught novels in the U.S. schools. In 2007 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to literature.
Lee wanted to live a simple life and was never comfortable with the attention the novel won her, and she practically disappeared from public life after it appeared. The world, however, continued waiting for a new novel from her, and on occasion she suggested that she was working on another story.
In 2015, a book did come out. Go Set a Watchman was more of a first draft, featuring Scout, the young girl who was the main character of To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman tells a story of Scout as adult.
Though Lee moved to New York in 1949, she spent many years guarding her privacy (隐私) in Monroeville, which served as the clear inspiration for the setting in To Kill a Mockingbird.
In 2007, Lee suffered a stroke (中风), but recovered and later settled in Monroeville permanently to care for her sister, Alice, who died in 2014. She was said to eat breakfast every morning at the same fast-food spot, and was friendly with her neighbors. The countless Americans knew her only through her works, and they will undoubtedly miss her.
4.What can be learned about Harper Lee from the first two paragraphs?
A.She was regarded as the greatest writer in America.
B.She made great contributions to American literature.
C.She once starred in a film adapted from her own novel.
D.She is the most popular writer in American schools in history.
5.Why did Harper Lee disappear from public life after her first novel came out?
A.She tried to get out of criticism.
B.She wanted to write another novel.
C.She suffered a stroke and was in recovery.
D.She felt uneasy about her novel’s influence.
6.What can we learn about Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman?
A.It is based on her own life story. B.It is adapted into a famous film.
C.It won her lots of honors and awards. D.It continues the story of her earlier novel.
7.What can best describe Harper Lee?
A.Influential but simple. B.Ill-tempered but productive.
C.Caring but stubborn. D.Inspiring but struggling.

Scientists in Switzerland have used lasers(激光)to change the path of a lightning strike. The experiment was carried out on Säntis mountain in Switzerland, near a radio and TV tower that’s hit by lightning about 100 times a year. Using a special laser, the researchers were able to guide the lightning strike.
Scientists have been trying to find a way to protect buildings from lightning for a long time. Currently, the best way to protect buildings from lightning is by putting metal rods(棒)on the buildings. But lightning rods can only protect a small area. If a building is very large, it needs a lot of lightning rods. But some buildings—such as airports—are so large that it’s difficult to protect the whole building using lightning rods.
Another idea is to use lasers to guide lightning. The idea of using lasers to guide lightning isn’t new. Scientists have been working on the idea for over 20 years. They have successfully guided lightning with lasers inside a laboratory.
But until recently, scientists haven’t been able to guide lightning with lasers outside. That changed in the summer of 2021. Using a powerful laser that can fire about 1,000 times a second, scientists in Switzerland were able to guide lightning for 164 feet away.
The heat from the laser creates a path of air that is less thick than the air around it. The path also has a special charge. The lightning can follow this path almost as if it were a lightning rod.
But despite the progress, the laser still didn’t guide the lightning as far as the scientists would like. To protect buildings from most lightning, lasers will have to guide the lightning for a much longer distance. The laser is also very expensive. The scientists say it cost about $2 billion. It will probably take 10 or more years before a laser like this is truly able to protect large buildings.
8.What is this new technology expected to protect?
    A.High buildings. B.Large buildings.
    C.Important buildings. D.Complex buildings.
9.What do we know about the new technology of using lasers?
A.It is still being tested. B.It works only in the lab.
C.It is an invention of Swiss scientists. D.It cools the air around the lightning.
10.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about the new technology?
    A.Its cost control. B.Its disadvantages.
C.Its wide application. D.Its promising future.
11.What can be the best title of this text?
A.Guide Lightning With a Laser B.Lightning Rods Are out of Date
C.Use Lasers to Block Lightning D.Lightning Can Be Used to Serve People

Some people are allergic (过敏的) to tree nuts. Would it be safe for a nut-allergic person to eat baked goods with coconut or coconut oil? Here are the views of Dr. Scott Sicherer.
Despite its name, coconut is not actually a nut, but a fruit. Regardless, the Food and Drug Administration considers it a tree nut, which is why it’s included in U.S. labeling laws.
It is difficult to assess the risk of coconut allergy among those with tree-nut allergies because allergic individuals may avoid it on purpose. Still, coconut allergy appears rare, and uncommon even among those with tree-nut allergies.
In a national registry of 5,149 people with peanut or tree-nut allergies, only four self-reported an allergy to coconut. And a more recent study of 40 children with positive tests or known allergy to peanuts or tree nuts showed no increased risks for having positive tests or allergy to coconut.
Your allergist would consider your personal allergy history in deciding whether to add coconut to your diet or to perform any testing. However, be aware that tests are often positive to coconut in people who could actually tolerate it, so a physician-supervised feeding test may be necessary for a conclusive answer.
When it comes to coconut oil, there is almost no medical literature on allergic reactions to it, which may reflect the likelihood that the processed forms of coconut oil contain little or no protein, although this has not been studied. Still, for those with coconut allergy, avoidance of coconut oil should be considered because it may still have a little protein.
Finally, it’s important to note that people with peanut or tree-nut allergies who choose to eat coconut must be careful to avoid cross-contact with tree nuts or peanut being avoided.
12.What do you know about coconut from this passage?
A.It is really a nut. B.Most people are allergic to it.
C.It is actually a fruit. D.It is forbidden by American laws.
13.Why is it difficult to assess the risk of coconut allergy among those with tree-nut allergies?
A.They are cautious about it and avoid it. B.They eat coconut as a kind of fruit.
C.Coconuts are becoming rarer and rarer. D.Coconut allergy is too common.
14.What is the probable meaning of the underlined part “medical literature” in paragraph 6?
A.Stories about medicine. B.Documents on medicine.
C.Novels for physicians. D.Description of coconut oil.
15.Which may be a suggestion Dr. Scott Sicherer gives to nut-allergic individuals?
A.Having a feeding test regularly. B.Trying to tolerate mild allergies.
C.Avoiding eating any coconuts. D.Following allergists’ instructions.

    A Surprise Job
Tiegan always liked to sing. Her earliest memories all have songs in them. Tiegan liked to sing in the bath tub when she was getting ready for bed, and she liked to sing in the morning while she walked to school.
Sometimes, though, Tiegan’s family liked the house to be quiet. Mom liked to solve crossword puzzles, and Dad liked to watch the news on TV each night. “It’s quiet time, Tiegan,” they would say. Then Tiegan had to find something else to do. She had plenty of puzzles and games, but she didn’t like them as much as singing.
One summer day, Tiegan was singing her favorite songs in the living room, Dad came downstairs and said, “Tiegan, I have a headache. Can you go outside and play? I really need it to be quiet so I can take a nap.”
Tiegan sighed and went outside. It was a sunny day, and many people were outside riding bikes and walking their dogs. She sat on the roadside and looked around. Then she started to hum(哼歌). She was careful to be quiet at first, but soon the humming turned to singing. “Dad probably can’t hear me anyway,” she thought, ”so it’s probably okay to sing outside.“
The sun was very warm, and Tiegan took off her baseball cap. Now she could feel a cool breeze across her forehead, which felt nice. She dropped her hat on the sidewalk and kept singing.
Just as Tiegan finished one of her favorite songs, a man with a small dog stopped in front of her. ”That was a beautiful song," he said. And he dropped a dollar into her hat. Before Tiegan could say anything, the man walked away with his dogs.
Tiegan wasn’t sure what to do with the dollar, but she did want to keep singing. As she started her next song, their neighbor Mrs. Maudslay came out of her house and looked over the fence.

    47.One possible version:
“Are you busking(街头卖艺), Tiegan?” Mrs. Maudslay asked. “No. I’m just playing and singing,” answered Tiegan. “I think the man must have mistaken me as a street performer, because I have my hat out there. It is really funny.” Tiegan added. She hadn’t meant to start a new job, but since her hat was already out, she decided to keep singing. Soon enough, people walked past and stopped to listen. When they were ready to move on, they dropped some money into her hat.
By the end of the afternoon, Tiegan’s hat was full. Tiegan felt happy, because she not only got a lot of unexpected dollars, but also proved that her songs were recognized by people. Singing didn’t feel like work to her, but it was certainly a good way to earn money. It suddenly occurred to her that with this money, she could take Mom and Dad out for ice cream just as soon as Dad was feeling better. After all, her singing had disturbed the peace of their home for so long.
