Government agencies and volunteer groups in many places are using sea creatures to protect coastal areas from storms and rising sea levels. The idea is that large groups of oysters(牡蛎)known as colonies, can help reduce the power of waves. Powerful waves can damage lands along the edge of ocean waters.
Oysters may play an important part in dealing with the problem. Oysters are central to a project that is taking place near Vaccaro's rebuilt house. The project is being carried out by the Littoral Society. It received $1 million from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The group has been building steel wire containers, filling them with rocks and whelk(海螺)shells and positioning them along the shoreline of Barnegat Bay.
Tiny baby oysters are attached to whelk shells and placed in the existing cages to further strengthen the shoreline. The shoreline in Vaccaro's neighborhood has lost 46 meters of beach since 1995, the Littoral Society says.
The oysters appear to be doing their job. One recent day, a strong east wind blew across the bay. But between the oysters and the shoreline, the water was much calmer, and waves gently went onto the shoreline instead of hitting it with force.
As an added benefit, the oysters help improve water quality in the bay. The Associated Press reports that a single oyster can filter(过滤)up to 190 liters of water a day.
A few kilometers south, a group called ReClam the Bay is building an oyster reef to protect the shoreline of Mordecai Island. People do not live on the island, but it protects the shoreline of Beach Haven, a town on Long Beach Island.
Volunteers fill bags with 16 kilograms of whelk shells, to which millions of baby oysters have been attached. Then volunteers move them out to the reef a few hundred yards into the ocean. They have placed 10,000 bags of oysters and whelk shells there since 2015.
    32. Where do the baby oysters grow?
    A. On the sea rocks. B. In steel wire cages.
    C. In shallow calm water. D. In the fishermen's houses.
    33. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 4?
    A. The sea life project works. B. The baby oysters grow well.
    C. The beach stops missing. D. The sea pollution is dropping.
    34. What do we know about ReClam the Bay?
    A. It cooperates with the Littoral Society. B. It offers baby oysters to the Littoral Society.
    C. It has the same aim as the Littoral Society. D. It has made more progress than the Littoral Society.
    35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Oyster Farming Has Great Benefits B. Volunteer Ocean Protection Is in Action
    C. Worldwide Beaches Are Disappearing Fast D. Little Sea Creature Could Save Coastal Land

There are two kinds of garlic, a kind of vegetable-hardnecks and softnecks. 36
Plant hardneck varieties in northern areas six to eight weeks before a hard frost (霜). Their heads have a single row of large divisions, formed around an underground stem(茎). They are tastier than softnecks but do not last as long in storage.
Softneck varieties are better for growing in warmer climates. Their heads contain several rows of smaller cloves(蒜瓣). Since they last longer after harvest, softnecks are usually the kind shoppers find in supermarkets.
37 Growers may have made a chemical on it to stop it from growing while at the store or in your home. It also may not be the kind best for your growing conditions.
Separate the head into individual cloves. 38 Plant the cloves with the pointy end up, about five centimeters deep and 15 centimeters apart in rows spaced 30 centimeters apart. Cover them with soil, press them down and water well.
If your winter temperature falls below four degrees Celsius, add a thick cover of straw(稻草) to the garden bed. Water the straw to settle it into place.
It is fine for the garlic plants to send out green growth, during autumn and early winter, even in northern climates. 39
Remove the straw cover in spring, after the danger of frost has passed. Put a little fertilizer between each row 5 to 10 centimeters from the stems. Keep the bed free of weeds.
Your garlic will be ready for harvest in mid-to-late summer when at least 50 percent of the plant has turned yellow. 40 Do not wash them.
    A. Store garlic heads in a cool, dry spot.
    B. Do not remove the outer part of thin skin.
    C. Choose the better kind to plant for your climate.
    D. Carefully dig the garlic out and move off the soil.
    E. Do not plant the garlic you find in the supermarket.
    F. Do not worry about possible damage to this growth in cold weather.
    G. Plant only garlic seeds from the healthiest heads saved from last year's harvest.

    第二节(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the middle of winter some 30 years ago. I was a young father with three little children depending on me. My college education, however, wasn't helping me to find a good job in our depressed area. My work as a teacher had dried up and now I was working in a saw mill(锯木厂)for just above the minimum wage.
As I got ready to go to work I wrapped band-aids(创可贴)around my fingers and put more in my pockets. Cutting and piling wood for 8 hours a day had caused my fingers to split and bleed at their tips in the cold, dry, winter air. Then I walked down to my car in the snow and hoped it would start.
That day at work was harder than normal. The machines kept breaking down. And we had to rush to catch back up as the wood piled up. On top of it all the heaters in the building weren't working and we could see our breath as we spent hours chopping, piling, carrying, and packaging the hard wood flooring to be shipped out.
When the work day finally ended, I walked tiredly toward the time clock, took off my work gloves and inspected my aching fingers. The splits were worse than ever and I had bled through the band-aids again. I tried to straighten out but my bad back cramped(绞痛) up as I did. I started my car and drove back home. I looked at the snow and blinked back tears. I wondered how long I could keep doing this, if things would ever get any better, and why life was so hard.
I tried to put a smile on my face as I opened my front door, but instead one appeared naturally. My daughter ran up to me, yelling "Daddy", and wrapped her little arms around my neck. I lifted her up and my heart exploded with love.
    注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My tired body didn't feel so tired any more. ________________________________________________________

M: Well. For one thing, he is Mr. Lee's nephew. He came here to live with him several years ago when Mr. Lee lost his son.
    W: Where is he from?
M: He's from a distant village. Three years ago, he came here with only 20 dollars in his pocket. Now, he has his own company with about 200 employees. I heard that he built a new school in his poor hometown.
    W: An encouraging story!
    Text 9
M: Have you moved into your new house yet?
W: We just moved in yesterday, actually.
M: So, what do you think about the place?
W: It's great! Unfortunately, we' re going to spend a lot of money doing everything up.
M: How old is the house then?
W: About 200 years old. It has a long history.
M: Sounds fascinating. Where is your new house?
W: It's in the west of the city.
M: Do you have a big yard?
W: Yes, it's bigger than our last one. I've got flowers in the front, and a fish pond in the back. Our windows let plenty of natural light in. They've also got wonderful views of the park behind our house.
M: How many rooms does your house have?
W: Right now, there are three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, and a living room. We're hoping to add on a green room and a guest room. In fact, when the guest room is ready, you should come and stay with us for a weekend.
    M: I'd love to. Thanks a lot.
    Text 10
M: Hello, everyone. My name's Ben. I'm from a group called "Nature". We run courses for young people like you to do during weekends. Now I'd like to tell you about the courses you can do on Saturday mornings. These courses are really about giving you students the chance to come and find out wildlife. We usually take students to a wild place that's near their home. We've planned for you to go to a forest this time. Taking part in our activities means you get to do all sorts of things including building a fire, which you wouldn't normally be allowed to do at home. We'll also show you how to make things out of different materials. On the last course, we designed backpacks. This time we'd get you to design and make a birdhouse. When it is finished, you can take it home. We think you'll really enjoy this. You spend three hours each week with us and the courses last for 12 weeks. Now, any questions?

    写作第二节(满分25分)
    One possible version:
My tired body didn't feel so tired any more. My aches and pains disappeared into her hug. And the joy in my heart drove sadness away. At that moment, I knew I could continue on and that things would get better. And I remembered again that I was here to give love to my family. It's my duty to support them and offer what they need. I kissed my little girl's cheek, held her tight, and carried her to the living room. I heard my wife preparing supper in the kitchen.
“Happy birthday.!" my wife greeted me warmly. "It's my birthday? "I asked myself. Yes, I remembered. The tiring work had made me forget all about it. My wife prepared a big meal for my birthday even though she didn't have much money for living expenses. She even prepared a birthday cake specially for me. Our family sat down to dinner. My children lit the birthday candles and sang Happy Birthday to me with their mother. I suddenly felt that life was so perfect.
