Three Chinese astronauts Wang Yaping, Zhai Zhigang and Ye Guangfu gave a space lecture on Dec. 9th, 2021
“Hello, everyone! Welcome to Tiangong Class.” With this greeting, a special lecture began on Tiangong space station about 400 kilometers above Earth on Dec. 9th, 2021.
Lasting for about an hour, the space lecture was broadcast live to millions of students. Three astronauts from the Shenzhou XIII crew hosted the lecture, introducing how they live and work on the space station and doing some interesting experiments that can only be done in space.
This is the second live space lecture in China. In 2013, with the assistance of two other Shenzhou X crew members, Wang hosted the country’s first live space lecture to over 60 million schoolchildren across China.
    More space to teach
Compared with the class eight years ago, this year’s space lecture is greatly different. The “classroom” is bigger. Instead of Tiangong I experimental module (实验舱), this year Wang had the space lecture in the Tianhe space core module (核心舱), which is the biggest spacecraft developed by China.

The quality of space to ground communication is also much improved.

Though these space lectures showed various topics, the aim behind the lectures has never changed. The space lectures aim to “spread knowledge about manned spaceflights and light up the interests for science among young people”. The spirit of science in the youth is an important driver of the progress of mankind. The space lecture makes young Chinese people take pride in our country as they see the rapid development of our space technology.

The erhu is a traditional Chinese musical instrument. It is the most popular of the huqin family. “Schools and families play an important role in teaching students about the value of working hard,” the guideline says. Primary and middle schools should provide students with hardworking spirit classes every week. According to the guideline, schools can also hold activities to give students real-world work experience. For example, schools can teach children how to plant trees on Tree Planting Day.

Washing clothes is easy for most people living in cities, as washing machines do the job. However, in many poor areas, people have to wash their clothes by hand, as they don’t have electricity or money to buy the machines. Now, a new bamboo washing machine might help them solve this problem.
The machine is as simple as the traditional washing machine. However, it uses the natural flow of water instead of electricity. It has a wooden rotation shaft (转轴) in the center and a bamboo drum (桶) outside. You just put the machine in a river and water will go into the bottom of the machine and rotate the main drum. This creates an eddy (涡流) that cleans clothes.
Pan Cheng, one of the designers, said, “There are 836 million people living in extreme poverty (极端贫困) in the world. They have to spend lots of time and energy doing little things like washing clothes. We want the bamboo washing machine to help them free up their time so they can do more meaningful things, like fighting poverty.”
“The best thing about this machine is that it’s cheap and easy to make,” said Yu Yue, another designer. “We give people the rotation shaft and teach them how to set up the machine. They can find bamboo locally and make it into drums. If there is no bamboo, they can also use materials like wood.”
The designers said they spent more than half a year working on the machine. They had countless team meetings and changed their design at least four times. But in the end, they were happy with the results.

What kind of shoes do you wear most? Perhaps leather(皮制的)shoes or sports shoes. But Chinese people used to wear hand-made cloth shoes.
According to historical records, normal people were not allowed to wear boots (靴子) during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Because of this, cloth shoes became popular, especially in Sichuan Province.
Tangchang, a town in Chengdu, is known for making multi-sole (千层底的) cloth shoes, which means the shoes’ soles are made of many layers of cloth. Tangchang cloth shoes have been made for more than 700 years.

She said the most important step is making the soles.
In 1998, Lai lost her job when the factory closed. She decided to open a small factory on her own. Her two younger sisters also joined in. Later, she opened her own store.
In 2015, her son Ai Peng, 38, was inspired to quit his job to help his mother. Ai added Shu embroidery patterns to make the shoes more fashionable. He also set up window displays (展示) to present the steps used to make shoes, teaching more people about the art.
