But seeing her daughter’s high energy and unshakable love of the stage, she finally supported her daughter’s wish. Jennifer won many contests, and soon her parents were advised to have her audition (试演) for The New Mickey Mouse Club, a Disney show. Jennifer tried out and landed her dream job. Many of Jennifer’s costars on the show went on to run after their careers. Instead, Jennifer chose to go on to college — a decision her mother fully supported. Jennifer’s parents were supportive throughout her career and schooling. But her mom was her champion — a constant source of support. Unfortunately, when Jennifer was 24 years old, her mom passed away. “The biggest light and fan was gone, the person who’d reminded me that I was unique and valuable. I was kind of lost,” she said. The next several years grew very dark. She began feeling herself lonely. She felt lifeless and purposeless. No, Ellen does not live inside a musical instrument. Peter, played by actor Sarsgaard, is a “home tuner”. She is tense and sleepless. Some friends suggest she turn to Peter for help. At Ellen’s place, he lies on her bed to try to recreate her usual mornings. Then, he explains the probleM: her toaster. He advises her to get a new one. Peter makes the lives of his customers better. He helps them sleep better or improve their family relationships. He is more centered on helping others than seeking riches. But, he longs for recognition in the academic world. He wants his scientific findings to gain wide acceptance. So, when a sharp businessman offers him the chance to join forces and make some real money, he is not interested. He does not want to sink that low. At the same time, Ellen is showing more interest in Peter, finding his passion appealing. But even Ellen questions Peter’s expertise. She finds it hard to accept his claim that her home is producing the musical note of C minor. He also tells her that unseen forces are governing her choices. And Ellen chooses to keep believing that she has some control over her life. Critics have been mixed on the success of The Sound of Silence. The hand sanitizer (洗手液) isn’t perfect. And, it may surprise you to know that it doesn’t provide longlasting protection. That’s contrary to what many people believe: more than half think that hand sanitizers last longer than they really do. This is more important than ever with the spread of the pandemic. On the recommendations from leading organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which suggest that one way to prevent the virus is by using a hand sanitizer with at least 60 per cent alcohol, people are snatching up the products at a quick clip. Here’s the thing: hand sanitizers don’t work to protect you for long and cleaning your hands more often is actually the best and first choice. Washing your hands with soap and water can wash germs down the drain, while hand sanitizers kill whatever is on your hands at that moment. If you touch something else polluted, you need to use a sanitizer again. The same goes for soap and water. Neither keeps your hands clean longer than a couple of minutes. “As soon as you’re done washing or using a sanitizer, there is no remaining effect. You can pollute your hands again right away,” says Tierno. That happens as soon as you touch common (and often dirty) surfaces, like banisters, elevator buttons, or counters. So, before eating or drinking or touching your face for any reason, you’ll need to either wash with soap and water or use a hand sanitizer. If your hands are dirty and you don’t have a hand sanitizer on you, just wait to touch your face. To wash properly, rub your hands with enough soap for 20 to 30 seconds, making sure to get in between fingers and the backs of your hands. Don’t forget to get under your nails by scraping your nails on the opposite hand.12. Which preventive measure does the author most recommend?A. Cleaning hands more often. B. Using alcohol to kill the virus.C. Avoiding touching dirty surfaces. D. Buying urgently needed products.13. What can we know from Paragraph 4?A. Our hands get polluted easily. B. Hand sanitizers are more effective.C. We don’t need to keep our hands clean. D. Washing hands with soap and water has a longlasting effect.14. What should we avoid doing before we make our hands clean?A. Cutting our nails. B. Rubbing our hands.C. Touching everyday items. D. Touching our face with hands.15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Wash Your Hands Before Eating B. Depend on Hand Sanitizers for Your SafetyC. Stay Together to Fight Against the Virus D. The Effect of Hand Sanitizers Can’t Last Long第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Getting a great night’s sleep can make a big difference to people. Now, select one of the composers listed on the chalkboard. And after class, find a tape containing the composition created by the composer. During the test, use the tape player to play the composition. When the music starts, imagine you are the conductor of an orchestra that performs the composer’s music.” And then she smiled, “You’ll receive the test in front of your classmates.”“What? A test in front of the classmates? It will kill me,” I said to myself. Although normally I performed well in music, and often have high marks, I am quite a shy girl. After a short while, I took a deep breath and scanned the list of names on the chalkboard. One name caught my attention.“Who’s that person?” I wondered. I didn’t know, but that was going to be my choice.Seated in the classroom, I fixed my eyes on that name anxiously, hoping no one would announce that name. Finally, it was my turn. I said without a second thought, “Johannes Brahms.” once I said the name, panic washed over me. I sighed, “How am I going to do this? I know nothing about the person and his composition. But I have to perform in front of my classmates and teacher.”Later in the day, I went to a store and bought a tape that contained Johannes Brahms’s compositions and its relevant music notation (乐谱). Back home, played the tape, and tried to get familiar with the composition. When listening to the composition and looking at the music score, I held a stick and moved my arms to and fro (来回地), pretending to be guiding an orchestra. During the following days, I kept practicing but didn’t perform quite well. The composition was indeed hard to me.When the big day came, I felt nervous as I slipped into my seat and waited for my turn to perform. Eventually, Mrs. Palin called my name, “Jill, it’s your turn.”注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。Paragraph 1:Then, I forced myself to walk to the front of the classroom._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2:The next day, Mrs. Palin handed each student a piece of paper with a score.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
