根据文章“International Translation Day”部分内容“Following the in-person programme of London-based workshops, talks and networking opportunities, English PEN hosts online conversations with international speakers.(除了在伦敦举办的面对面的研讨会、谈话和交流机会外,英国笔会还主持与国际演讲者的在线对话。)”可知,该项目有网络的在线对话,而“Audio Description Tour of Gold”部分内容“People booking it will be sent a viewing link in advance to watch at any time for 48 hours after the start time.(预定的观众将提前收到观看链接,可以在开演后48小时内随时观看。)”
根据文章“Spring and Summer 2022 Programme”部分内容“The British Library has cooperated with West Dean College of Arts and Conservation to deliver a study programme on preservation and collection for libraries. The programme centers around continued professional development and is aimed at professionals, students and others interested in furthering their skills in this area.(大英图书馆与西迪恩艺术与保护学院合作,为图书馆提供了一个关于保存和收藏的研究项目。
根据题干关键词“a historical figure”定位到文章“Alexander the Great: The Making of Wonders”部分内容“Alexander, born in ancient Macedonia, built an empire that stretched across the ancient world, and his exploration of unfamiliar lands, rulers and cultures, from European to Asian shaped his legacy into the fantastic stories we know of today.(亚历山大出生于古代马其顿,他建立了一个横跨古代世界的帝国,他对陌生的土地、统治者和文化的探索,从欧洲到亚洲,将他的遗产塑造成我们今天所知道的奇妙故事。)”

We’ve all heard the stories of an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough: living a hard life, working part time, being a couch potato before getting that major role. Shelby, the star of“A Dog’s Way Home’“, has a hard-luck tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living in a landfill (垃圾填埋场), rooting through garbage for her next meal.
Shelby’s big break came in April 2017, when animal-control officer Megan Buhler was driving in Cheatham County, Tennessee. Out on an unrelated call, Buhler spotted and approached what she recalled was a noticeably scared puppy emerging from the garbage dump.“I knelt down and just said,’Oh, come here, baby,”said Buhler. “She was so scared, but she came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck.” The pair headed to the county animal shelter, where the staff began calling the new resident Baby Girl.
Buhler and others didn’t know that 3,200 kilometers away, Hollywood was looking for a dog to play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michon. The find-a-Bella job went to dog trainer Teresa Ann Miller. Her mission was to search shelters nationwide for a dog that could play Bella. One day, Miller spotted Baby Girl’s adoption photo. “Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was smiling happily,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the ability to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter, renamed her Shelby and took her to California for training. Miller and Shelby trained for just over three months before filming began. Then they were together each day on the set.
Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Variety made the comments“an amazing dog, perfect performance!”
Shelby has come a long way from the garbage dump. But Buhler said when she saw Shelby recently she just needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from piles of trash. “She’s exactly the same, with the same big grin on her face.” Buhler said.
4. Why is an actor’s struggle before a career breakthrough mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To clearly point out the main idea of the passage.
B. To attract reader’s attention by giving dramatic examples.
C. To introduce a dog’s similar but even more unusual experience.
D. To make a sharp contrast between an actor’s struggle and a dog’s struggle.
5. What finally helped Baby Girl get the big role in the film?
A. Her adoption picture. B. Her personality and ability.
C. Her happy smile. D. Her miserable experiences.
6. What does Buhler mean by saying “She is exactly the same” in the last paragraph?
A. The dog looked exactly the same as before.
B. The dog was really excited to live such a happy life.
C. The dog returned to the piles of trash where she found it.
D. The dramatic change of the dog’s life hasn’t changed her nature.
7. Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?
A. The Trainer and Her Star Dog
B. Shelby’s Hard-luck Story
C. From a Landfill Puppy to a Movie Star
D. The Success of “A Dog’s Way Home”
C 5. B 6. D 7. C
A Dog’s Way Home的主人公Shelby从流浪狗变身电影明星的故事。
根据文章第一段“We’ve all heard the stories of an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough: living a hard life, working part time, being a couch potato before getting that major role. Shelby, the star of “A Dog’s Way Home”, has a hard-luck tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living in a landfill (垃圾填埋场), rooting through garbage for her next meal.(我们都听说过一个演员在事业上取得突破之前的挣扎故事:过着艰苦的生活,做兼职,在得到那个主要角色之前成为一个沙发土豆。
根据文章第三段中的“Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the ability to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter, renamed her Shelby and took her to California for training.(然后她见了这只小狗狗,并对她的性格和对简单命令的反应能力进行了评估。
根据文章倒数第二段“Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Variety made the comments “an amazing dog, perfect performance!”(大多数影评都称赞了谢尔比的表演。 以及最后一段“But Buhler said when she saw Shelby recently she just needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from piles of trash. “She’s exactly the same, with the same big grin on her face.”
C项“From a Landfill Puppy to a Movie Star(从垃圾堆里的小狗到电影明星)”最能概括本文大意。故选C项。
C
Back in the early 2000s, lots of people couldn’t have imagined life without alarm clocks, CD players, calendars, cameras, or lots of other devices. But along came the iPhone and other smartphones, and they took over the functions of dozens of things we used to think were essential.
The smartphone story could even be a model for fighting climate change; not because smartphones use a small part of the energy of all the things they replace - although they do-but because they represent a different approach to design in general. And that approach is to focus on function rather than form. That requires focusing on understanding the underlying problem, and then engineering a wide range of potential solutions. This approach could revolutionize how we think about energy efficiency.
Traditionally, improvements in energy efficiency have mostly focused on individual devices, which can be quite fruitful. But focusing on individual devices is like if Apple had spent effort inventing a better alarm clock, a better CD player, a better calendar, and a better camera. Now with an iPhone, we don’t need the standalone(独立运行的) devices at all, because it can function as all of them.
So when it comes to using energy efficiently, rather than just installing a more efficient heater, some people have focused instead on the desired function: staying warm. They designed and coated their house so well that they could get rid of their heater altogether, letting them heat their house with 99% less energy.
In the same way, rather than just making cars more efficient, what if we focus on the desired function-getting where we want when we want-and create an efficient transportation system where we can drive less or get rid of our personal cars entirely?
The most energy efficient car or heater is no car, or no heater, while still being able to get around and stay warm. In other words, it’s not thinking efficient, it’s thinking different.
8. What makes the iPhone a good example of environmental protection?
A. Perfecting individual devices. B. Combining possible functions.
C. Adopting a simplest design. D. Reducing the energy consumption.
9. According to the passage, what is the core of improving energy efficiency?
A. Using recyclable materials. B. Revolutionizing technologies.
C. Figuring out various solutions. D. Concentrating on the essential needs.
10. What does the author think of traditional practices in energy improvements?
A. Fruitless. B. Out-of-date. C. Adequate. D. Perfect.
11. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Think out of the box. B. Differences make it unique.
C. Be economical with energy. D. Step out of the comfort zone.
B 9. D 10. B 11. A
根据第一段中的“But along came the iPhone and other smartphones, and they took over the functions of dozens of things we used to think were essential.(但随着iPhone和其他智能手机的出现,它们接管了几十种我们过去认为必不可少的功能)”和第二段中的“The smartphone story could even be a model for fighting climate change; not because smartphones use a small part of the energy of all the things they replace-although they do-but because they represent a different approach to design in general. And that approach is to focus on function rather than form.(智能手机的故事甚至可以成为对抗气候变化的一个模式;不是因为智能手机只消耗了它们所取代的所有东西的一小部分能源——尽管它们确实如此——而是因为它们代表了一种总体上不同的设计方法。
根据第三段“Traditionally, improvements in energy efficiency have mostly focused on individual devices, which can be quite fruitful. But focusing on individual devices is like if Apple had spent effort inventing a better alarm clock, a better CD player, a better calendar, and a better camera. Now with an iPhone, we don't need the standalone devices at all, because it can function as all of them.(传统上,能源效率的提高主要集中在单个设备上,这可能相当富有成效。 现在有了iPhone,我们完全不需要独立的设备,因为它可以兼任他们所有的设备的功能)”和第四段中具体例子“So when it comes to using energy efficiently, rather than just installing a more efficient heater, some people have focused instead on the desired function(因此,当谈到高效利用能源,不仅仅是安装一个更有效的加热器,一些人更注重想要的功能)”可推断,提高能源效率的核心是注重于人们的基本需要。
从文章第三段“Traditionally, improvements in energy efficiency have mostly focused on individual devices, which can be quite fruitful.(传统上,能源效率的提高主要集中在单个设备上,这是非常有成效的)可以推断出作者对于传统的做法持认可的态度。结合本段最后一句话 “Now with an iPhone, we don’t need the standalone devices at all, because it can function as all of them.(现在有了iPhone,我们完全不需要独立的设备,因为它可以兼任他们所有的设备的功能。)”
文章最后一段对于全文进行了总结,根据最后一段内容“The most energy efficient car or heater is no car, or no heater, while still being able to get around and stay warm. In other words, it’s not thinking efficient, it’s thinking different.(最节能的汽车或加热器是没有汽车,或没有加热器,但仍然能够四处走动和保持温暖。 A. Think out of the box. B. Differences make it unique. C. Be economical with energy节约能源;D. Step out of the comfort zone走出舒适区,可知A项符合题意,故选A。
D
The US Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) recently asked scientists, lawyers, social scientists and other experts to consider some of these ethical dimensions. To give two examples: on privacy, as we let more listening devices into our homes, how do we prevent the data they collect falling into the wrong hands through hacking (黑客) or simply being sold between companies without us receiving any money? Another example: mixed reality, including virtual reality, will become pervasive in the next few years. As we move from headsets to what the IEEE committee describes as “more subtle and integrated sensory enhancements” we will use technology to live in an illusory world in many aspects of our lives. How do we balance the rights of the individual, control over our virtual identity, and the need to live and interact on a face-to-face basis while being empowered to live rich lives in mixed reality?
There is, of course, always a tension between innovation and regulation. But it can often seem that giant steps are taken in technology with minimal public discussion. Take the self-driving car: although it may be safer than human drivers and is likely to save more than a million lives a year worldwide, it will also take jobs from drivers, traffic police, sign-makers, car-repair companies, carmakers and more. Is this a bargain we want to make? In taking that decision, have we given thought to a car that knows everywhere we go, decides routes, perhaps, based on paid advertisements from shops along the way—and listens and sees everything we do on board? What will happen to that data and can it be kept safe?
Additionally, while some worry about the uncommon “trolley problem” of whom the car should choose to hit in a freak accident—an old lady or a mother and baby—perhaps the more frequent issue will be how we find out what the algorithm (算法) was thinking at the time of an accident, because AIs (Artificial Intelligence) are self-learning and devise their own strategies.
Similar concerns are emerging over the internet of things. Robot vacuum-cleaners already plot cleaning cycles using computer-aided vision that, for some models, is relayed to their manufacturers. As more things at home become connected, they will be hackable and the data they collect sellable.
It’s time for some messy democratic discussions about the future of AI.
12. What is the purpose of the two examples in Paragraph 1?
A. To cast some light on hacking in our modern life.
B. To lead the reader to think of ethical issues brought by hi-tech.
C. To lead in the following example concerning the self-driving car.
D. To list the existing problems that caught the attention of experts.
13. What does the underlined word “pervasive” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Intelligent. B. Powerful. C. Widespread. D. Skillful.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards the big steps in technology?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Cautious. D. Unclear.
15. How does the author support his claim?
A. By exposing some underlying problems in high-tech.
B. By calling on people to move away from innovation.
C. By illustrating AI’s abilities in self-learning strategies.
D. By displaying our computer-aided life in future.
【答案】12 B 13. C 14. C 15. A
根据第一段中“The US Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) recently asked scientists, lawyers, social scientists and other experts to consider some of these ethical dimensions.
划线词句后文“As we move from headsets to what the IEEE committee describes as ‘more subtle and integrated sensory enhancements’ we will use technology to live in an illusory world in many aspects of our lives.
通读全文,尤其根据第二段中“There is, of course, always a tension between innovation and regulation. But it can often seem that giant steps are taken in technology with minimal public discussion. 但在科技领域取得巨大进展时,公众的讨论往往很少)”以及最后一段“It’s time for some messy, democratic discussions about the future of AI.
通读全文,根据第一段中“To give two examples: on privacy, as we let more listening devices into our homes, how do we prevent the data they collect falling into the wrong hands through hacking (黑客) or simply being sold between companies without us receiving any money? Another example: mixed reality, including virtual reality, will become pervasive in the next few years. As we move from headsets to what the IEEE committee describes as ‘more subtle and integrated sensory enhancements’ we will use technology to live in an illusory world in many aspects of our lives. How do we balance the rights of the individual, control over our virtual identity, and the need to live and interact on a face-to-face basis while being empowered to live rich lives in mixed reality? 故选A项。
People are taught how to speak, but good sentence structure and a wide range of vocabulary words won’t always lead to being understood or understanding others._______16_______
The good news is that it’s never too late to learn how to communicate more effectively. The first step is to realize you’ re having communication issues._______17_______The following is a list of the top three signs that you need to learn healthier communication skills.
You have the same fights over and over.
Your fights are about the same topic again and again. If this is happening, it means you don’t yet have the skills to resolve conflicts._______18_______The fight may end, but it’s only a matter of time before you argue about the same thing again. When you learn how to resolve conflicts, issues don’t pile up or become baggage that weighs down your relationship.
_______19_______
You don’t want to fight so you try not to bring up subjects that lead only to pain and disconnection. The problem is that avoiding them leads to pain and disconnection anyway. Unless you learn how to have hard conversations productively, you will get more and more disconnected until your relationship is in danger of ending.
You regularly feel misunderstood or unheard.
No matter how hard you try, you don’t feel understood. Perhaps your partner has expressed the same feeling.Over time the disconnected feeling does damage to your relationship. It’s important to learn how to communicate in a better way, so that both you and the other person feel heard and understood._______20_______To be heard, your partner will need to learn how to listen. For you, to be able to hear your partner, you will need to do the same.
A. You avoid discussing certain topics.
B. You argue with your partners about some issues.
C. If you can’t resolve issues, they will continue to show up.
D. This requires more than just speaking to your partner or vice versa.
E. Then, you can learn how to communicate in a more productive way.
F. If you leave conflicts unsettled, you will feel disconnected and lonely.
G. Effective communication requires much more than being able to speak.
G 17. E 18. C 19. A 20. D
根据前句“People are taught how to speak, but good sentence structure and a wide range of vocabulary words won’t always lead to being understood or understanding others.(人们被教导如何说话,但好的句子结构与大量的词汇并不总能实现交际。)” G“Effective communication requires much more than being able to speak.(有效的交际需要的不仅仅是会讲话。)”
根据前句“The first step is to realize you’ re having communication issues. E“Then, you can learn how to communicate in a more productive way.
根据前句“If this is happening, it means you don’t yet have the skills to resolve conflicts. 和后句“The fight may end, but it’s only a matter of time before you argue about the same thing again.(争吵可能会结束,但你们再次为同样的事情争吵只是时间问题。)” C“If you can’t resolve issues, they will continue to show up.
根据下文“You don’t want to fight so you try not to bring up subjects that lead only to pain and disconnection. The problem is that avoiding them leads to pain and disconnection anyway. Unless you learn how to have hard conversations productively, you will get more and more disconnected until your relationship is in danger of ending. A“You avoid discussing certain topics. 故选A。
根据后文“To be heard, your partner will need to learn how to listen. For you, to be able to hear your partner, you will need to do the same. D“This requires more than just speaking to your partner or vice versa.

I first became conscious of my body image last year in fifth grade. One day I was walking by my mirror getting ready for bed and I noticed that my stomach looked big. I started to really hate that and think I was fat even though my family always told me how skinny I was. It wasn’t only my stomach—I started to think my nose was ugly and that my laugh was disgusting. I was even afraid to laugh or smile in public.
Then, in the sixth grade, a popular guy in my class named Luke made it worse. He told his table group that my body looked swollen in skinny jeans. I heard about it from someone else, but then Luke even told me to my face! I couldn’t stop thinking about what Luke had said. Even worse, I started to believe it was true, and I hid my skinny jeans all the way at the bottom of my drawer.
I know I cared too much about what other people said and thought about me. I guess I just wanted to be liked. In fact, I really wish I could have just brushed off comments like that, but I couldn’t change my personality and what I care about that easily.
Luke’s mean comment affected me in a big way. I lost confidence in more than just my body—I started to think that I didn’t matter and that I didn’t have a place in the world. To make it worse, some people also started telling me that I was not meant to be an author, which is what I really want to be. That especially hurt and I started to feel really sad all the time.
I hadn’t really told anyone how I’d been feeling until a couple of months ago when I got a call from my cousin. I’m really close to her, and hearing her voice and laugh made me feel so good inside. I thought about how I used to be that way too, and how I was so sick of feeling sad.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Then I started telling her and it all came out.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I went back to my bedroom, I looked at myself in the mirror for a long time.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then I started telling her and it all came out. She seemed so surprised and said how special I was. She started listing all my good qualities, saying I shouldn’t listen to people who say mean things because they were probably just feeling bad about themselves or trying to look cool. Definitely, she added, I shouldn’t let them tell me how to feel about myself or my body. It was like a sudden wake-up call: focusing on what other people thought of me only made things even worse, and I must learn to love and accept myself for who I am.
When I went back to my bedroom, I looked at myself in the mirror for a long time. I saw what I had never seen in myself before, like my nice grey eyes, my cute smile, and the fact that I am beautiful in my own way. I know some people might still make hurtful comments again, and sometimes I may feel like I am fat again, but next time I will be prepared. I will only think well of myself even when I am feeling sad, and stand up for myself when someone puts me down. In my eyes, I am perfect myself—no one can change that.
①开始:start/begin/commence
②说,表达:say/speak/tell/express
③关注:focus on/concentrate on/centre on
