W:Yes,in 20 minutes.
Text 2
M:I really need your help on my chemistry paper.
W:OK,I’ll help you with the search, but after that you’re on your own.
Text 3
M:Professor Goodwin,I wasn’t in class yesterday because I had a cold.Could you give me a make-up test?
W:Of course.Come to my office at four o’clock, and we’ll do it then.
Text 4
W:I’m thinking of starting my own tour company.
M:Tour company? But you can’t find your way to your own apartment!
Text 5
M:Can you bill me later?
W:I’m sorry,I can’t.You’re a new patient,so the fee for the first examination is due now.You can pay in cash,by credit card or by check.
M:Well,OK then.
Text 6
W:Someone’s just stolen my purse.I left it on this table while I went to the restroom...and when I came back,I saw a guy running out of the café.He was about 17 with short blond hair.I noticed he had a scar on his forehead.
M:OK,madam.I’ll call the police now.But I’m afraid we aren’t responsible for your loss although it took place here.
W:I know.
Text 7
W:What about having a swimming pool,a dance studio,outdoor tennis courts,and...
M:Hold on a minute;you don’t need outdoor tennis courts.Only four people can use a tennis court.Wouldn’t it be better to have two all-weather soccer fields? More students can play.
W:OK,so let’s have the indoor courts for when the weather’s bad.I think there should be a children’s pool as well as a swimming pool.
M:Well,I think a swimming pool will be enough. What do you think about having basketball courts?

M:I think so.I left at ten but Alex said most people didn’t leave until half past eleven.
W:Why did you leave early?

Text 10
W:OK,everyone.Today’s presentation is by Nathan.Start when you’re ready,Nathan.
M:OK.Hello,everyone.Our presentation is called A Smaller World and it’s about technology and cultural change. The talk focuses on technology that makes the world smaller.First of all,can you imagine life without cars and planes? Before the invention of these means of transport, people could only travel by train or boat, and they couldn’t travel very fast. Now,with cars and planes,we can travel farther and faster. Some people even live in one country and work in another because they can fly to work. Before we move onto the next type of technology,it is important to remember that planes and cars do have their disadvantages. They can be dangerous and they cause a lot of pollution, and this also changes the way we live.OK.Second,communications technology, like television and the Internet, certainly makes the world smaller. We stay in our house or office, but we can see news and shows from all around the world. With the Internet,we can write and chat to people all over the world. But nowadays, people spend more time using the technology than they do meeting other people. We’re spending more and more of our time in our houses, talking to strangers in other countries, than we are with our friends and neighbors. My grandmother could name all the people in her street, but I don’t even know the names of my neighbors.
W:OK.Thank you,Nathan,that was great.

Theaters of the Past
The Greek Theater
Theaters developed in many parts of Greece.Ancient Greek theaters were built in natural open air sites on conveniently shaped hills. This allowed a great mass of people to enjoy a show at a time.Due to this, actors placed emphasis on exaggerated(夸张的) action and speech. And colourful symbolic masks and costumes were used.
The Medieval Theater
The Medieval theater started in churches. That’s why medieval plays were about Bible stories. At first,it became a custom for priests(牧师) to act out brief scenes during Christmas and Easter. These acts attracted large crowds. Finally the church refused to allow priests to participate in any such events again,so ordinary people began these performances outside.Performances were set in the town square, with several stage settings around it.
The Elizabethan Theater
The England’s theater developed rapidly in the years following the defeat of the Spanish Navy. The dominant feature of Elizabethan theater was the stage. It has three parts:the fore stage for outside scenes;the inner stage for scenes inside a building; an upper stage or balcony for various purposes. The reason for this design is that there were no scene changes,or breaks during the play.Very little scenery was used,so the actors had to create a scene through their voices and dialogues. This led to a more poetic script, and poets became the main source of script writing.
The Restoration Theater
Some of the plays told sad stories, but the majority of the plays were really funny. Many specialized machines were used to create the scene. The stage was a very clever idea,in that on the sides of the stage large back shutters(百叶窗) were painted with the scene.

About two months ago,Xing Yan started experiencing insomnia for the first time.
“It developed suddenly.I was under heavy pressure from work at the time.I could not fall asleep at all at night, and was wide awake until dawn.I tried not to think of the things that were troubling me and forget them, but the thoughts quickly returned, making it even harder for me to fall asleep,” said the bank employee from Fushun,Liaoning Province.
Before the insomnia developed,Xing had regularly experienced less serious related disorders, such as taking a long time to fall asleep. He believes his tendency to worry may be the cause of his insomnia.
In addition to feeling tired during the day,Xing feels he is experiencing the physical consequences of insomnia, such as an unexplained stomach ache.
“I became very frightened when I realized I could not sleep every day,” said the 40-year-old,who has been admitted to Peking University Sixth Hospital in Beijing for treatment.“I may be ruined if this situation continues.”
In an attempt to overcome his problem,Xing plans to strictly follow the advice of his doctor, such as getting up and going to bed at fixed times, and taking medication.
Sun Hongqiang, director of the Sleep Medicine Centre at the hospital, said his team has seen a constant rise in the number of patients with sleeping disorders in recent years.
Despite seeing about 100 patients every day,the 12 doctors at the centre are unable to meet demand, which means many patients endure a long wait before they can consult a physician, according to Sun.
“Globally, the incidence of sleep disorders is rising,” he said.“In China, about 30 percent of the population has sleep disorders, while around 10 percent frequently experience insomnia.”
It is unclear what is behind the rise in the number of people with sleep disorders, but the problem may be linked with factors such as personality,brain-related illnesses and disturbed lifestyles,he added.

A PG-13 rating is a stricter warning by the Rating Board to parents to determine whether their children under age 13 should view the film.A PG-13 film may go beyond the PG rating in theme, violence, nudity(裸露),language, adult activities or other elements, but does not reach the restricted R category.
The theme of the film by itself will not result in a rating greater than PG-13,although activities shown in the film related to a mature theme may result in a restricted rating for the film.Any drug use will initially require at least a PG-13 rating.More than brief nudity will require at least a PG-13 rating, but such nudity in PG-13 rated film generally will not be sexually oriented. There may be violence scene in a PG-13 movie, but generally not both realistic and extreme or persistent violence.
A single use of one of the rude words in a film, though only as an expletive(感叹语),initially requires at least a PG-13 rating.More than one such bad word requires an R rating,as must even one of those words used in a sexual context. The Rating Board nevertheless may rate such a film PG-13 if,based on a special vote by a two-thirds majority, the Raters feel that most American parents would believe that a PG-13 rating is appropriate because of the context or manner in which the words are used or because the use of those words in the film is easily neglected.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the hottest time of the year in southern California.Steve,a star basketball player at the University of California, with his cousin Zach, had planned a camping trip in the Great National Forest for their summer vacation.
The boys gathered clothes and supplies, and began their great adventure with Brady the dog early in the morning.Upon arrival,Steve pulled over to the side of the road along the bank of the river.“A wonderful place for fishing,” Steve exclaimed in delight.Zach nodded in agreement.
At high noon, the sun was scorching hot. With a good harvest of fish, the boys marched into the forest with Brady following them. After a long walk, they found a clearing that was ideal for a campsite. The camp was set up immediately as Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper.
An afternoon nap was absolutely a special treat in mid-summer.However,the boys were waken up by the fierce barks of Brady.Outside, heavy smoke filled the air and wind-blown flame was skipping from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer turned the forest into a tinderbox. In a little while,Steve and Zach were inside their tent packing their belongings.
“Let’s go! We can make it back to the river!” They headed down against the fire-wind in the direction of the river. But Brady barked a sharp warning.Ahead of them lay a thick curtain of smoke across the track. They would never make it through that.Steve was uneasy for it was hard to find a safe way to escape in the heavy smoke.
Brady lifted his head and snuffed(嗅) the smoke-laden wind.Next moment, the dog bounded away and disappeared down a sharp slope(坡).The boys shouted for him,but he didn’t come back.Steve couldn’t blame Brady for panicking. He himself wanted to run even though he didn’t know where to run.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Steve and Zach hadn’t gone far when there was a familiar bark.
Brady pulled again,in spite of the boy’s disbelief, urgently.
参考范文
Steve and Zach hadn’t gone far when there was a familiar bark.Brady came bounding, stopped directly in front of Steve and hit him with his head, pushing him back toward the slope. But Steve didn’t get it.Then Brady grabbed the boy’s jeans and started pulling. The message was clear, but Steve hesitated.Of course he remembered Brady saving his uncle’s life when the dog was much younger. Was he still sharp enough to get them through this?
Brady pulled again,in spite of the boy’s disbelief, urgently.“OK,big guy,” seeing the fire was touching underbrush nearby,Steve made up his mind.Brady led them back down the slope and into the trees.Several times the big dog stopped.Often he changed directions to find the right way.The boys were so tired but the dog bullied both boys to go on.Steve was almost numb when he heard it—the wonderful sound of rushing water! They made it back to the river.
