If you want to learn more about American history you have countless books to choose from. But here are some of the best recommendations online:
² A People’s History of the United States
    by Howard Zinn
Published in 1980, this book focuses on the history of regular people instead of the elite. The book tells the story of immigrant laborers, African-Americans, women, Native-Americans and the working poor. It argues that much of American history is about the majority being exploited by an elite minority.
The book covers everything from Christopher Columbus’s historic voyage to the present day and was last updated to cover events up until 2005.
    ² 1776
    by David McCullough
First published in 2005, this book discusses the events of the year 1776 during the American Revolution. The book focuses on military events and explores the leadership of military and political figures such as George Washington, King George III, General Howe, Henry Knox and Nathaniel Green.
² The Salem Witch Trials (A Day-By-Day Chronicle of a Community Under Siege)
    by Marilynne K. Roach
Published in 2002, this book lays out the events of the Salem Witch Trials as they happened. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific month in the witch hunt, which began in January of 1692 and ended in May of 1693.
Since the Salem Witch Trials can be confusing and complicated sometimes and involved many events with many different people, this book is great at clearing up the confusion by spelling out exactly what happened and when.
² Mayflower (A Story of Courage, Community and War)
    by Nathaniel Philbrick
Published in 2006, this book tackles the many myths and misconceptions about the Mayflower pilgrims and Plymouth Plantation.
The book discusses the pilgrim’s relationship with the Native-Americans by highlighting how the local Wampanoag tribe were nearly destroyed by European diseases brought by the colonists and how the colonists captured and sold the Wampanoags into slavery during King Phillip’s War.

This event occurred on Columbus’ fourth and final voyage to the Americas, which began in Cadiz in 1502. Columbus landed near the north coast of Jamaica on June 20, 1503 with only two of his four ships. At first, the natives welcomed Columbus and his crew, providing them with food and other supplies, and welcoming them with open arms.
This arrangement didn’t last very long. Over the next several months Columbus’ crew repaid the generosity of the natives by frequently stealing and cheating them. As a result of this, by January of 1504, the native people decided to stop supplying the Europeans.
Without the significant source of food or means to leave, Columbus’ crew were in serious trouble. Luckily for his crew, Columbus had certain lunar knowledge. He predicted there would be a total lunar eclipse on the evening of February 29, 1504. He also knew what time it would occur.
Armed with this knowledge, which Columbus chose to gamble would be extremely accurate, he called a meeting with the chiefs of the nearby tribes shortly before the eclipse was to take place. In this meeting, he told them his god was angry with them for ceasing to give him supplies. As a result, his god would take away the moon as a sign of his anger and subsequently punish them for their actions.
Luckily for Columbus, the predicted lunar eclipse took place more or less on schedule. The Indians observed this and were so astonished and frightened that with sad scream that they came running from every direction to the ships, promising they would diligently supply all their necessities in the future.
Columbus agreed to take their case before his god and went into his cabin to “pray”. Columbus knew the moon would stay completely in the Earth’s shadow for around 48 minutes, so he waited for the proper time for the moon to begin to appear. Shortly before this took place, he came back out and told the natives that he had asked his god to forgive them and god had agreed. The moon began to reappear and Columbus no longer had trouble getting the provisions he needed.

History is important to study because it is essential for all of us in understanding ourselves and the world around us. And in my opinion, studying history benefits beyond history itself, because it helps develop and refine our skills through studying history.
You can refine our reading skills by reading texts from a wide array of time periods. Language has changed and evolved over time and so has the way people write and express themselves. We can also refine our writing skills through learning to not just repeat what someone else said, but to analyze information from multiple sources and come up with our own conclusions. It’s two birds with one stone — better writing and critical thinking!
There are so many sources of information out in the world. Finding a decisive truth for many topics just doesn’t exist. What was a victory for one group was a great loss for another — we get to create our own opinions of these events.
History gives us the opportunity to learn from others’ past mistakes. It helps us understand the many reasons why people may behave the way they do. As a result, it helps us become smarter as decision-makers.
In the study of history we will need to conduct research. This gives us the opportunity to look at two kinds of sources — primary (written at the time) and secondary sources (written about a time period, after the fact). This practice can teach us how to decipher between reliable and unreliable sources.
There are numbers and data to be learned from history. In terms of patterns: patterns in population, disappearances during times of war, and even in environmental factors. These patterns that are found help clarify why things happened as they did.
It’s incredibly important to learn to question the quality of the information and “history” we are learning. Keep these two questions in mind as we read through information: How do I know what I’m reading are facts and accurate information? Could they be the writer’s opinions?

Three Most Common Regrets People Have Later in Life
If you follow Gary Vaynerchuk, then you’re probably aware of how much he talks about regret. This is a list of the most common regrets people have. (31)________.
² Being afraid to say “I Love You”
I probably only said those words to three people in my entire life. Why are we so afraid to say “I love you”? Because it might make us vulnerable? (32)________?
Three words could make somebody’s day, their week, their month, their year, even their life! So don’t be so afraid to tell people you love them.
² Care too much about what other people think
(33)________. I would be scared to do all the things I wanted to do, in case my friends or the people around me thought it was stupid.
Truth is, it’s your life, and you have to be happy with it. You cannot let the opinions of others dictate how you are going to live your life. (34)________, “We spend money that we do not have, on things we do not need, to impress people who do not care.”
Stop worrying so much about what other people will think of you for the decisions you make.
    ² (35)________
Quite frankly, if you live your whole life without ever taking a big risk, you may have lived a very boring life.
Risks don’t always pay off, but they’re involved with all of life’s best experiences. Those who aren’t open to taking risks will never be able to see the most of what life has to offer.
    A. As the quote goes
    B. Never take a big risk
    C. this is a lesson from the older generation to us all
    D. Because the other person might not feel the same way
    E. Fear of what other people would think kept me caged for far too long
    F. Make sure you won’t have these regrets when you reach old age
    G. He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.

History is a topic that many find boring to study or a waste of time. But there is more to studying history than meets the eye. Then “Why is history important?”
History can help us become better informed citizens. It shows us who we are as a collective group, and being informed of this is a key element in maintaining a democratic society. This knowledge helps people take an active role in the political forum through educated debates and by refining people’s core beliefs. Through knowledge of history, citizens can even change their old belief systems.
By looking at specific stories of individuals and situations, you can test your own morals and values. You can compare it to some real and difficult situations individuals have had to face in trying times. Looking to people who have faced and overcome adversity can be inspiring. You can study the great people of history who successfully worked through moral dilemmas (困境), and also ordinary people who teach us lessons in courage, persistence and protest.
We learn from past sufferings against groups of people; genocides (大屠杀), wars, and attacks. Through the collective sufferings, we have learned to pay attention to the warning signs leading up to such sufferings. Society has been able to take these warning signs and fight against them when they see them in the present day. Knowing what events led up to these various wars helps us better influence our future.
The skills that are acquired through learning about history, such as critical thinking, research, assessing information, etc, are all useful skills that are sought by employers. Many employers see these skills as being an advantage in their employees and will hire those with history degrees in various roles and industries.
Understanding past events and how they impact the world today can bring about empathy and understanding for groups of people whose history may be different from the mainstream. You will also understand the suffering, joy, and chaos that were necessary for the present day to happen and appreciate all that you are able to benefit from past efforts today.

    How to Study History
History is one of those “required” subjects that many students describe as dull and boring. But learning history can be fun and exciting, especially if you approach it with the right attitude.
First, remember important information. It’s necessary to memorize key dates, names and events you're likely to see on your history exam. Second, make connections and develop ideas. History is full of facts, events and details. The best way to do this is to start by developing an understanding of the big picture and then working your way down to the detail. Third, watch Movies! That’s right! There is an array of films and documentaries out there that accurately depict historical events.
    第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
Studying history is beneficial in all aspects. First, it can develop our political intelligence and participate in the political forum actively. Secondly, we can learn morals and values through specific stories in history. Thirdly, we can notice clear warning signs of sufferings and fight against them. Fourth, we can gain a career through history with the skills that are acquired in learning about history. Fifth, it helps with our personal growth and appreciation when we understand past events and their influence.

    Text 6
W: Welcome to Youth Hotel. Can I help you?
M: I’d like a room for the night.
W: Would you like a single room, a double room or a room for three?
M: A single room, please. Can I pay by cheque?
W: Sure. Fill in this form, please.
M: Need my student card number?
W: No, just your address and telephone number.
M: OK. Here is the form.
W: Very well. Here’s your key to Room 212.

    W: History.
M: Why do you think so?

W: We have a lot of movies about our past to prove it.
    M: You’re right.
W: History is full of some of the most interesting and fascinating stories ever told.
    M: Really?
W: You can see films which include pirates, treasure, mysteries, and adventures.
M: Yes. They sound not so boring.
W: New stories are developing from the past.
M: It’s true. Many excellent television series are available.
    Text 8
M: Make sure to work on your essay this weekend. It isn’t due for two more weeks, but it has to be at least twenty pages long.
W: Can you suggest some topics to write about?
M: You can write about any of the books that we have read so far this term. It must be about one of the books from class, like The Old Man and the Sea, Moby Dick, or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
W: I started writing about Moby Dick last week, and I’ve written five pages already.
M: That’s a good choice. It’s a long book, and you should have plenty to write about.
W: I like reading about the ocean, and The Old Man and the Sea is a short book. But Moby Dick is a much easier subject for a long essay.
    Text 9
    M: It’s a lovely day out today, isn’t it?
W: It’s beautiful. Enjoy it while it lasts. It’s supposed to get cold tomorrow.
M: What’s the weather forecast for tomorrow?
W: Well, it’s supposed to snow early tomorrow morning and then tomorrow afternoon there’s a chance of freezing rain.
    M: That doesn’t sound pretty.
W: Do you have any plans for tomorrow?
M: Well, I was going to drive to Birmingham to see some friends.
W: You might want to change your plans. With the cold and wet weather, we’re supposed to stay at home tomorrow, the roads are going to be rather slippery.
M: I suppose I should. I don’t like driving in dangerous weather conditions. Do you have any plans for tomorrow?
W: I just have to go to class tomorrow afternoon.
M: If you’re lucky, it’ll get cancelled and you can have a snow day!
W: If that happens, then I’ll invite you over and we can drink hot cocoa and watch movies.
    M: That sounds like fun.
W: Hey, look outside! It started to rain!
M: British weather is even more predictable than I had previously thought.
    Text 10
M: Today I’d like to give a talk on history. History is the knowledge of and study of the past. It is the story of the past and a form of collective memory. History is the story of who we are, where we come from, and can potentially reveal where we are headed.
There is a history of every field and topic, from medicine, to music, to art. To know and understand history is absolutely necessary, even though the results of historical study are not as visible, and less immediate.
History gives us a very clear picture of how the various aspects of society — such as technology, governmental systems, and even society as a whole — worked in the past so we understand how it came to work the way it is now.
Studying history allows us to observe and understand how people and societies behaved. For example, we are able to evaluate war, even when a nation is at peace, by looking back at previous events. History provides us with the data that is used to create laws, or theories about various aspects of society.
