The Birthday Cake
Josie was a girl who loved to bake. She always helped her uncle at his bakery. Mostly she carried ingredients from the refrigerator to the large work table. Sometimes Uncle Dave let Josie stir (搅拌) the cake batter (面糊) with a wooden spoon.
Josie wanted to learn to bake a cake on her own. She asked if Uncle Dave would show her how Her mother’s birthday was only two days away. If Josie made a cake all by herself, it would be a wonderful surprise.
On Saturday morning, Josie arrived at the bakery just as it was closing. The bakery always closed early on the weekend so Uncle Dave could walk his dogs. “Ready, Josie?” Uncle Dave asked “Ready!” Josie answered.
First, Uncle Dave had Josie get all the ingredients (原料) and line them up on the work table. Then he showed her how to measure flour and sugar so that she had the exact right amount. She added these ingredients to a large mixing bowl. Next, Uncle Dave tapped an egg on the side of the bowl to crack it. “Be careful not to get any bits of shell in the bowl,” he said.
Josie tapped her egg very gently on the bowl. It didn’t crack. She tried again, and this time the shell came apart. She pulled the egg apart over the bowl and watched the yellow egg yolk drop into the flour.
Now it was time to stir. “This is fun!” said Josie.
When the batter was ready, Uncle Dave helped Josie pour it into the cake pan. He gave Josie oven mitts (烤箱手套) and showed her how to put the pan in the oven without burning her hands.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】While the cake baked, Josie and Uncle Dave wiped off the table and washed all the dishes. While waiting, Uncle Dave told Josie why he opened this bakery in the first place. When Uncle Dave graduated, he had to work in two places to make a living and one of them was a bakery. He gave free cakes and bread to the homeless. Working there helped him understood what he wanted in life — making people happy and helping people. Josie smiled and told Uncle Dave that she wanted to be like him, someone who is passionate and warm-hearted.
On her mother’s birthday, Josie put the cake before her mom secretly. When Josie’s mom opened her eyes, she couldn’t believe what she saw. What was in sight was a perfect cake made by her perfect daughter. She told Josie that she would never forget this birthday because she has made it special. Surprisingly, the whole family shared this cake and they all found it amazing, which encouraged Josie. Ten years later, when she opened her own charity bakery to help the poor and the homeless, Josie started her presentation with a simple sentence: “We are here to help.”

Grandpa’s Old Chair
It was the annual cleaning day for the family. John and his mom were busy cleaning the house. They cleaned upstairs, downstairs, inside and outside until everything was spotless. Exhausted, they sank into the couch. Just then, John’s mom noticed an old chair that was faded and worn. That chair was for John’s grandpa, who had lived with them since John’s grandma had died.
“John, come and help me.” John’s mom sprang to her feet. “We’ll take the chair to the curb (路边). The garbage truck is picking up on our block tomorrow.”
As they attempted to move the chair, John’s grandpa made his way through the door. Seeing what was happening, he quickly tried to stop them. “No!” he protested. “You can’t take my chair.”
“But it’s so old...” John’s mom argued. “We’ll buy you a new one.”
“No,” he persisted, trying to push his chair back into place.
John’s mom finally let go of the chair and left the room. With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair and closed his eyes.
“Grandpa, why won’t you let us get rid of the chair?” John asked.
“You don’t understand, John.” His grandpa shook his head and said, “I sat in this chair with your grandma right here when I asked her to marry me. And I sat in this chair the night your father was born. Many years later,” Grandpa’s voice broke, “I sat in this chair when the doctor called and told me that your grandma was ill. I was lost without her, but the chair gave me comfort and warmth.” The old man’s sadness seemed to grow as he recalled that fateful day.
“I understand now.” John looked at his grandpa and said, “This is not just any old chair. It is more like a friend.”
“Yes,” he nodded. “We’ve gone through a lot together.”
However, that night, when John and his grandpa were asleep, John’s mom and dad carried the chair outside. It was a starless night. Snow fell silently from the black sky and covered Grandpa’s chair in a blanket of white.

The next morning, John was woken by the garbage truck pulling up to the house. He run downstairs and saw his grandpa looking outside through the window, tears rolling down his cheeks. The chair stood at the curb on the street, covered in snow. “Wait! Don’t take that chair,” he shouted. John then ran back inside and said, “Mom, you can’t throw out grandpa’s chair. It has been with him for decades and is like a loyal friend that has witnessed the most important moments in his life!”
Paragraph 2:
Hearing this, John’s mom looked at his grandpa and slowly walked towards him. She handed grandpa a tissue and said, “I’m sorry… I just didn’t realize how much it meant to you. John and I will bring your chair back.” They took the chair back inside. They placed it next to the fireplace so it could dry. John’s mom stepped back, as if seeing the chair for the very first time. “Mm... I guess it does give the room a certain touch of character,” she mused. John and his grandpa wholeheartedly agreed that the living room would be rather dull without this old chair.

The routine practice in the school band came to an end. Mark and Steven smiled at each other, happily talking about the weekend arrangements. Steven was putting his saxophone(萨克斯) into the case when he tripped over a shelf Unfortunately, it fell and hit his saxophone. Clang! “Oh no!” Steven yelled.
Mark quickly picked up the saxophone, checked it and then handed it to Steven, who stood still, at a loss. Mark helped Steven put away all the things and comforted him with the thought that it was not a new saxophone. Anyway, it already had a lot of dents(凹痕).
“I know. But it’s my grandpa’s. He is visiting us this Sunday.” Steven lowered his head, upset.
Steven’s grandpa used to be a great saxophonist in the national band. When Steven was even a baby, his grandpa always played some famous tunes like “Edelweiss,” “Rivers of Babylon,” “Forever in love” for him.
Staring at Steven in confusion, Mark asked what was wrong. Steven sighed deeply and then showed his concern that whenever his grandpa came, he would ask Steven to play with his beloved saxophone. “Maybe he won’t notice the new dent or maybe he won’t care,” Mark said with a shrug(耸肩). “But what if Grandpa notices the dent? How is he going to react? And how shall I tell him about it?” replied Steven.
On the bus home, Steven thought about all the possibilities. To avoid playing the saxophone, he could pretend that he had a fever. Oh no! He didn’t like lying. He could get his baby brother, Joseph, to take all of Grandpa’s attention. Or, he could turn to mum for help…

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
When Sunday finally arrived, Steven still had no idea what he was going to do. Grandpa came over as expected and warmly greeted all the family one by one. Steven could have told him right then, but he froze. After dinner, when Grandpa suggested Steven's playing some music, Steven scratched his head, searching high and low for Joseph. Oh no! Mom was giving Joseph a bath. Lips bitten, forehead wrinkled, Steven dragged his saxophone from the case and began to play. Grandpa was pleasantly surprised, “You’re better than I was at your age!”
Grandpa praised Steven, but he was not happy. With misty eyes, Steven told the whole story frankly. Surprisingly, Grandpa just beamed with arms wrapping around Steven’s shoulders and shared tales about other dents. Hearing tales like trips on stage or accidental bumps with other instruments, Steven burst out giggling now and then. He was not the only clumsy one in tie family and he could tell his own stories with music. Lifting the saxophone like a shot, Steven filled the room with happy noise.

Aly wandered toward the garden, where Miss Strawbridge, the landlady, was planting flowers. Last week, Aly and her parents had moved into the house in Miss Strawbridge’s backyard.
Aly watched silently until the old woman looked up and asked, “Why the long face, Aly?” “There aren’t any kids around here to play with.” said Aly. Miss Strawbridge’s blued eyes twinkled. “You should just like Rachel who used to live here.” said Miss Strawbridge. “Too bad you two young girls couldn’t have lived here at the same time.”
“What did Rachel do when she was bored?” asked Aly. “She planted a flower garden by the shed (棚子) in the backyard.” answered Miss Strawbridge. Miss Strawbridge handed Aly a trowel (铲子) and held out a box of flowers. For the rest of the afternoon, Aly pulled the weeds, dug and planted. But when she stepped back and admired her blue and yellow flowers, she smiled. Still, it was too bad that Rachel wasn’t there to share it.
The next day, Aly watered her flowers, then wondered what else she could do. She walked across the yard to the garden, where Miss Strawbridge sat reading. She stood silently until the old woman looked up. “What else did Rachel do when she was bored?” asked Aly. “She wrote poetry in her flower garden.” Miss Strawbridge answered. “One of her poem even won the first prize in a contest at school. The best way to learn how to write poetry is to read poetry.” She handed Aly her book.
For the rest of the afternoon, Aly lay on her stomach in the cool grass next to her flowers and read Miss Strawbridge’s book of poetry. After a while, she got some paper and a pencil from her house and scribbled (乱写) and erased. In the end she had a poem that might not be a prize winner but sounded good enough to make her smile. Still, it was too bad that Rachel wasn’t there. They could have read their poems to each other.
The next day, Aly watered her flowers, then wondered what else she could do. She rushed across the yard and knocked on Miss Strawbridge’s door. “What else did Rachel do when she was bored?” Asked Aly when Miss Strawbridge opened the door. “She played in the old shed and pretended it was her house.” Answered Miss Strawbridge.
Aly glanced back at the shed and then at Miss Strawbridge, Miss Strawbridge twinkled. “There’s nothing in the shed that you can hurt or that can hurt you.” She took a key off a hook next to the door and handed it to Aly.
She raced back into the shed, only to find a few chairs and boxes resting on the dusty shelves.

【答案】 She raced back into the shed, only to find a few chairs and boxes resting on the dusty shelves. This would be a perfect clubhouse. Still, it was too bad that Rachel wasn’t there to play in it with her. “Maybe Rachel left her plates and cups in one of these boxes,” Aly thought. “Miss Strawbridge said that there isn’t anything I could hurt in here, so she probably wouldn’t mind if I looked inside.” Aly opened a box and a thing caught her eye.
It was a trophy (奖杯) with some words — First Place in Poetry. Rachel Strawbridge. 1937. Aly stared at the silver cup belonging to Rachel Strawbridge. Slowly, a smile spread across her face. She ran back to the house and put two sandwiches together. She grabbed two apples and two juice boxes and carried everything across the yard to the door of Miss Strawbridge’s house. When Miss Strawbridge opened the door, Aly said, “I wondered if Rachel would like to have lunch in the shed with me and then write poetry in the backyard.” Miss Strawbridge winked. “I think Rachel would like that very much.” And they walked across the yard together.

My dad doesn’t write me letters. And he doesn’t always remember my birthday or wedding anniversary -- or even how old I am sometimes.
But I only need to look around me to be reminded of his love. He restored a 100-year-old rocking chair after I told him how much I wanted one. When I moved into my first apartment, he spent his weekends in a small space replacing pipes. And when I lost a blue stone from a favorite necklace, he worked his magic with common stuff
The four greatest words I know are “Dad will build it”.
I could never forget when I was seven, one day we walked by a toy store window. There in the corner was the most unusual doll house had ever seen. It was shaped like an upturned log. Little oval windows were cut into it decorated with white curtains and framed by tiny balconies.
“Oh, Daddy,” I said, “isn’t it beautiful? Do you think Santa Clause will bring it to me?”
Dad looked at the $100 price tag -- too high a figure in those days. “I think even Santa couldn't afford this house,” he joked, hiking up his belt, as he often does when he’s nervous. “Maybe one day, sweetheart, ”Dad probably hoped I’d forget about the doll house, but I kept talking about it.
On Christmas morning, I awoke early and raced downstairs. In the faint light, I made out some wrapped boxes under the tree-- but none large enough to contain my doll house.
Dad could see my disappointment.

Four months later, a beautiful doll house was in front of me.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Para1:
Dad could see my disappointment. My tears welling up in eyes, he pulled me onto his lap and gently assured me, “Dad will build it.” As promised, he got down to preparing all the materials right after Christmas. Night after night, Dad would come home from his job dead tired, yet he’d always find time to work on the doll house. So eager was I that I often stood nearby, occasionally giving a helping hand under his instructions. Gradually, my doll house began to take shape.
Para2:
Four months later, a beautiful doll house was in front of me. With the shape like an upturned log, it looked exactly the same as the one in the toy store—little oval windows, white curtains and even the tiny balconies. But to me, no doll house in the world was better than the one Dad made just for me with his two hands. It was he who brought my dream to life! Screaming with excitement and gratitude, I threw myself at him, “Thank you, Dad.” He smiled, patting me gently on the head with his rough hands. I always know “Dad will build it.” is his Fatherlish to say “I love you.”

My family immigrated to Canada when I was about one year old. In those early years, we did not have much money. Our home was a simple rented apartment, which was rather poorly furnished. There certainly was not enough money for expensive outings. As a result, our weekends were filled with simple pleasures that we could do for free, like picnics, bike rides, and my favorite—trips to the library.
Thanks to the library’s children’s section, I fell in love with stories—silly ones, moving ones, and even educational ones. I would have my parents read the books that we borrowed over and over again until we needed to return them, or I would page through them myself, imagining the stories in my head, even though I was too young to read the words.
When I was about five years old and finally started to read on my own, I had a curious thought: I knew we could get books from the library or buy them in store s if we had the money, but where did books come from?
I asked my mother this question, to which she replied that the stories I loved were created in the imaginations of people called “writers” These people then wrote them down so they could be s hared with others.
Four decades later, I still remember that moment. It was as though I had been struck by lightning. Then and there, I knew my purpose in this world. I would be one of those writers. I would create stories and share them with the world.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
As a young child, I began writing by making up stories about animals or my toys. I described the cute animals I saw and wrote them into short stories. The toys I often played with every day were so interesting that I wrote articles about them and introduced them to people. I showed people the positive energy and positive things in life with my small pen.
Paragraph 2:
After a few years of constant writing practice, my hard work eventually paid off. My teacher told me that my writing was novel in conception and unique in language. She read my composition aloud in front of the whole class and spoke highly of me, which inspired me greatly. The teacher also recommended my composition to the newspaper, and my article appeared in the newspaper. Recently, I won the first prize in the national primary and secondary school composition contest, awarded the title of the future little writer and praised by the principal in the conference, which made me glad. I would work harder to become a real writer, and write more and better works.

By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp” and walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
“Tom!” she cried. “Help!”
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better.
Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to' the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

Paragraph l:

Paragraph 2:
It was daybreak when Jane woke up.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. Jane had to stay alone in the forest for another cold night. At that moment, she felt a little sad, but she wasn’t so frightened. She reminded herself constantly, “Tom must have called for those helicopters. Maybe he was in one of them and will return soon! I have to guide him tomorrow.” She fell asleep and dreamed of seeing Tom.
It was daybreak when Jane woke up. She ate some berries and then walked along the stream, hoping to find a suitable place to guide the helicopter. She walked and walked, exhausted but full of hope. Suddenly, she spotted a huge flat rock. She managed to climb onto it and waited with patience. The helicopter appeared again. The nearer it got, the more she waved the yellow blouse. To her great joy, the helicopter didn’t miss Jane this time and it landed near the big rock slowly. Tom jumped off the helicopter and rushed towards Jane. They hugged each other tightly and burst into tears.

Pamela Jones is a nurse, mom, and grandmother and she has over 25 years’ experience in the field of medicine. After she graduated from her medical school with her medical degree, she was devoted to numerous hospitals in Michigan and more. She is also a volunteer of a non-profit organization, which mainly helps some people suffering from different kinds of slight diseases and offers some medical care.
Last Tuesday, Pamela was driving on the way home after seeing a patient. She was traveling westbound on 1-276 around 8:30 pm. Then suddenly, she was hit by a car that switched lanes on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Her car tuned, flipped over and crashed into an embankment. Her car was badly damaged. The causing-traffic-trouble car was damaged too, but it fled away. Thankfully, she survived. However, she could not remember much about what happened.
Saving lives is a daily thing for Nurse Pamela Jones. But, at this time, it was she who needed to be saved. Unfortunately, dozens of cars moved past her but no one took the time to stop and help her. “There must have been 150 cars that drove by,” Pamela recalled. She couldn’t move and her phone was out of reach, so she had to wait for help in her car.
Mike Lottier and his son Drew were driving on the way home, too. They had just returned from the city where Drew’s grandparents lived. It was Drew who first found her car. He noticed that glass debris was everywhere, the sunroof was destroyed, and the car was crashed out of shape. Seeing these, Drew shouted, “Dad, there is a car accident ahead.” Mike drove slowly toward the damaged car. Soon they arrived at the scene.

【答案】Immediately they pulled over and went to check the accident. They saw Pamela was stuck in the car. She was screaming and asking for help when Mike and Drew found her. Fifteen-year-old Drew stayed with Pamela to comfort and keep her calm while his dad was calling 911 for help. Drew said that he just couldn’t imagine if he was in that position and no one stopped for him. Mike said that it was a miracle that she survived the accident. Before the emergency service arrived, she was moved out of the car.
Tears were flowing down Pamela’s cheeks after she was saved. She said that Mike and his son were her angels on the earth, and that she was forever grateful to them. She couldn’t stop her tears from flowing out of joy. She was so touched and thankful that Mike and his son cared enough to stop to help. She said that she usually received “thank you” from the people she helped, but now it’s time for her to say “thank you” to those who helped her.

One particular Thanksgiving, the weather was so beautiful that Mom decided to have dinner on our front lawn. Dad built a long table, and Mom and I rounded up every chair in the house. I did the place settings and made the centerpiece — my favorite job of the year.
My aunt arrived with Uncle Gordon. I watched him walk from the street up the lawn, tall with his blond hair shining in the sun. Another car had pulled up behind them, and Uncle Gordon waited for a slim man to join him. As they walked, he and Gordon chatted. Mom came out of the house and greeted my aunt. Then, with a surprised look, she said hello to Gordon and his friend.
“Who’s this?”
Gordon smiled and told us the man’s name. “A Canuck(法裔加拿大人) from Toronto, like me.”
“Oh,” Mom said uncertainly. “Well, welcome. Leslie, get another place setting and a chair.” She turned to the stranger. “Please have a seat. We’re going to eat in about half an hour. ”I thought the man looked a little funny, but he smiled. “Why, thanks. Thanks a lot.” I did as Mom asked and set a place at the table for the stranger. I put him next to Uncle Gordon so the two friends could recall home. And they did a lot of talking.
After dinner, the man approached my mother with a smile. “Thank you for including me in your Thanksgiving dinner, Joyce. It wasn’t something I was expecting.” Mom frowned, a little confused. “Of course,” she said. “We’re glad you could be here. Do you have Thanksgiving in Canada?”
“Ours is in October. We have turkey, though, just like you.” He smiled. “But this is one of the best Thanksgivings I’ve had. I guess Americans and Canadians aren’t that different, eh?” Then again, he said, “But I never expected this.”
“Gordon’s friend seems nice,” Mom said to my aunt when we were alone in the kitchen.

【答案】“Gordon’s friend?” my aunt said. “He’s not Gordon’s friend. We don’t know him.” My aunt’s words stunned my mom into silence for several moments before she snapped back to her senses and started to utter again, “So... we’ve been treating a total stranger to dinner this entire evening! What if...” As Mom strived to shake off all the crazy ideas going on in her mind, my aunt beckoned Uncle Gordon into the kitchen with a wave. Upon hearing the news, Uncle Gordon’s eyebrows jerked up in surprise. “Well, at least he acted nice and gentle. You know what? Probably we should just go ask him,” my aunt proposed.
“I was, actually, lost in the neighborhood,” replied the stranger. When asked why he had come to our house, the stranger was quite honest. He described how hospitable we were when he came in, how he had no time to interrupt when Uncle Gordon dragged him into the talks about Canada, and how excited Mom was to introduce her cooking recipes. “It was such a wonderful gathering that I almost forgot my initial intention.” he continued, embarrassed. We burst into laughter and told him to ease off. Seeing him off in the right direction, I couldn’t help but think that the best way to celebrate Thanksgiving would always be to give regardless.

It was a pleasant sort of a Sunday as John walked in his uncle’s garden. His parents had moved to Delhi for work. “Your final examination is just a few months away.” Father had said, “We want you to stay with Uncle and Aunt, complete your exams and then join us in Delhi.” Uncle Tim was John’s father’s cousin. They had a Golden Retrieve called Oliver.
From the first day John realized that Oliver was unhappy. He was not given his meals on time, nor was he taken for a walk. Oliver was shouted at and treated badly all day. “Your uncle bought Oliver so that the dog could protect his house from thieves but actually neither he nor his wife loved him,” the gardener told John one day. John felt sad. At night he could hear Oliver whimpering (呜咽) in the cold. “Why don’t you make a coat for your pet?” John asked. “I have much better things to do,” answered his aunt.
One day John went out for a walk with Oliver when the sky suddenly became cloudy. As rain started falling, people ran everywhere for protection. John ran to take shelter in a sweet shop. A few minutes later, he realized Oliver was missing. John was sad and searched the entire place with the help of the shop owner, but failed.
John’s uncle put in an advertisement in the paper. After all he had spent a lot of money buying Oliver and did not want to lose him.
It was a half-an-hour ride by bus. The house was a beautiful brick colored structure. The middle aged lady who greeted Oliver was a motherly sort of a woman. She and her husband had answered John’s uncle’s advertisement in the paper. Since John’s uncle was out on an official tour, John had been sent to check on the dog.
“He is asleep.” said the lady, “Come and have a look”. Oliver slept on a small bed covered with a warm quilt (被褥). A pot of milk stood in a corner of the room possibly for Oliver’s next feed. “I found him on the back seat of the car. He must have hidden himself there from the storm. I had opened the back door of the car to put in the vegetables, which I was going to buy. However, because of the heavy rain I changed my mind and decided to do the shopping the next day. The poor dear was shivering (颤抖) with cold, when I first noticed him after arriving home.” The lady told John.

John looked at the dog. Yes it was Oliver, his uncle’s dog.

John smiled as he shook his head, “I am sorry to have troubled you. Sir, Madam. But this is not our Oliver.”
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】John looked at the dog. Yes it was Oliver, his uncle’s dog. Seeing him sleeping with a warm quilt and a pot of milk waiting for him, John couldn’t believe it was Oliver. Oliver had an unhappy life in uncle’s home, where what greeted him was continuous shouts and being badly treated. At the thought of these, John was in a dilemma, he had no thought whether he should take Oliver home. Finally, he made a determination to leave Oliver in a home which was full of love and care instead of shouts and coldness.
John smiled as he shook his head, “I am sorry to have troubled you. Sir, Madam. But this is not our Oliver.” The woman and her husband was lost in doubts, without knowing what to do. Afraid of being debunked, John made up a story, “There is a scar on Oliver’s head, so it can’t be Oliver”. Hearing what John had said, the woman signed with a relief, saying that she would take care of Oliver until his owner took him home. John was extremely happy that Oliver happened to have a warm house to live in and a motherly woman to care about him, living a comfortable life which he deserved to have.

One day my grandfather gave me a gift—a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in. But the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out.
"That's the whole idea," my grandfather explained. "The piggy bank will help you save your money so that, at the end of the year, you might have enough for that bike you dream about." He added, "Will you put some of the money given by me in the following days into the piggy bank?" I said “yes" and promised.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, "This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up." When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew excited, dreaming about what I could do with my savings.
One day my friend and I visited the new ice-cream shop in town. but we didn't have enough money to buy just one ice cream. So my friend asked me to take some money out of my piggy bank. "No, I can't." I replied. "There is an opening for putting the money in, but no way for taking any out. Besides, my grandfather told me that I need to save money until the end of the year."
"Come on…" said my friend. Finally, I gave in. We took the piggy bank to the park and tried our best to shake out the money. We succeeded. From then on, I became good at taking money out of my piggy bank. Soon, it became a habit. And I started taking out money whenever I wanted it.
One day I was doing that again when my grandfather walked in. I was frightened.

The next day, Grandpa gave me another piggy bank.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The piggy bank fell out of my hands and broke. Grandpa asked me what happened. I showed my resourcefulness in an emergency, lying to Grandpa that I was about to put some coins into piggy bank, but because I had just washed my hands, they were so slippery that the bank slipped from my hands. It seemed that Grandpa believed in what I said and told me to be careful.
The next day, Grandpa gave me another piggy bank. Obviously, he was aware of my lie yesterday and just didn’t expose me. I also realized my mistake, feeling ashamed of what I had done and from that day on, I never secretly took money from the piggy bank again. At the end of the year, I successfully bought a bike that I had been longing for. Watching me riding on the bike, Grandpa’s face wore a satisfied smile.

Humphrey and his wife Hildy had ten white sheep, eight black-faced sheep, and five long-legged lambs. Early every autumn, they would drive their sheep onto the ground beside the big, yellow barn(畜棚). Then Humphrey would hold each sheep still while Hildy cut off the wool.
When they finished, there were twenty-three soft piles of wool on the floor, and twenty-three pink, skinny sheep jumping around happily as they were freed into the field. Humphrey and Hildy collected piles of wool and put them in the house.
The next few weeks were very busy. They finally finished on cold, fall evening. Twenty-three bright, woolly blankets lay in cheerful piles around the kitchen. They would sell the warm blankets when winter came. By the time the snow flew, the sheep’s wool would have grown long enough to keep them nice and warm. Humphrey and Hildy both smiled, content with a job well done, and went to bed early.
The alarm clock went off at 5: 00 a.m. Humphrey and Hildy listened to the local weather report. “The earliest cold air in history,” The announcer said, “has brought a freeze(霜冻)to our area! So put warm coverings, folks!” They stared at each other in horror.
“The sheep!” shouted Humphrey. They hurried to put on their clothes and raced outside. What a freeze it was! The golden autumn grass fell to the ground, and the sheep without wool were shaking with cold painfully. Their pink skins had turned blue.

【答案】One possible version:
“What will we do?” Hildy cried. “The barn can’t hold so many sheep.” They had to drive twelve of them into the barn, and five in the garage. As for the other six, there was no other choice but to drive them into the kitchen. The next morning, wakened up by Humphrey’s angry cries, Hildy rushed to the kitchen. What a mess! A lamb was lying beside the fireplace, chewing a corner of Humphrey’s newspaper, and another black-faced sheep had just knocked down the plates and bowls from the breakfast table.
Outside the messy kitchen, Hildy had a good idea, eyes falling on the blankets. “If we give them back their wool, they can go outside.” Humphrey followed her gaze, “Hildy, how could we keep those blankets on the sheep? They’d fall off in the strong wind!” Hildy tapped her chin thoughtfully: “Maybe we can.” Grabbing a blanket from the nearest pile, she began unraveling the blankets and then was busy knitting for their sheep.(OR: She began to sew buttons onto one side of the blankets and buttonholes made of strings on the other.)Finally, twenty-three warm “wool sweaters” were on their sheep, protecting them from the cold as they played outside.
