When I was a boy, we had a tiny (微小的) television set. It only had one channel. Still, I would always be in my chair when cartoons came on.
The one I liked best was The Jetsons (《杰森一家》). It was a cartoon series that was set in a future and it was full of fantastic machines that could do anything. I always smiled when I watched it and dreamed of a day when I would have machines like this to do all my work, so I could just sit back and relax.
Now my life is full of machines like these. But if anything, I seem to have more to do than ever. Just today I had to spend most of the morning downloading (下载) a new version (版本) of my word processing program (文字处理程序) so I could write this article. I seem to be drowning (溺死) in a sea of new rules and problems that come with new technology.
Now don’t get me wrong. Computers and machines have done a lot to help all of us. I just want us to be able to use them without them using us. We always seem to be busy because we’re spending all of our time using these machines.

ChatGPT, a smart AI chatbot (聊天机器人) tool, has bee very popular all over the world in the past months. According to a US survey of more than 1,000 students, over 89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with a homework assignment (任务).
Developed by US company OpenAI, ChatGPT is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and emails, create recipes (食谱), translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions.
Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned (禁止) the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT.
The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on assignments. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread inaccurate (不准确的) information.
Apart from bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to stop the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones.
However, not all schools say “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are drafting policies (起草规章制度) on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.
Bhaskar Vira, pro-vice-chancellor (副校长) for education at the University Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on AI software (人工智能软件) like ChatGPT are wise. “We have to know that AI is a tool people will use,” he told the school newspaper the university. What we need to do is “change our learning, teaching and examinations. That way, we can “have integrity (诚信) while recognizing (认可) the use of the tool”.

Passage 5
Think I Can: How to Push Yourself to Success
“Because I can” is magic. It pushes us past our comfort zones (舒适区). It gives us a reason to do the things that we think we can’t. Here are a few ways to use this positive thinking in your own life.
Be More Active
Whether it is to go home or go to work, climb the stairs instead of taking the lift. Whether it is to go shopping or watch a film, ride a bike instead of driving a car. Break the “I’m tired” or “It is too hard” or “It is too far” cycle. Increasing your activity level will be good for you.
Try Something New
It is easy for us to make excuses for why we shouldn’t try something new. Maybe you think it is out of your comfort zone. Maybe it seems too difficult. Or maybe, it is just inconvenient (不方便的). Remember that you can try something new. It will help you to move past something bad and discover something new about yourself and possible new interests.
Increase Your Willpower (意志力)
Saying “No” to our favorites can be challenging. However, developing strong willpower, whether it is in response (反应) to our favorite chocolate cake or to overshopping, is something that we can all benefit from. Next time you want to do something you might regret, you have the willpower to say “No”.
Speak Up
Often, we meet something that troubles us or makes us unhappy. We have a voice “because I can” in our minds. Talking with your loved ones, such as your parents and friends about how you feel, what you need and what you are thinking about can help you get on well with them and form deeper relationships.
