Ireland has had a very difficult history. The problems started in the 16th century when English rulers tried to vanquish Ireland. For hundreds of years, the Irish people fought against the English. Finally, in 1921, the British government was forced to give independence to the south of Ireland. The result is that today there are two “Irelands”. Northem Ireland, in the north, is part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland, in the south, is an independent country.

In the 1840s the main crop, potatoes, was affected by disease and about 750, 000 people died of hunger. This, and a shortage of work, forced many people to leave Ireland and live in the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada. As a result, the population fell from 8.2 million in 1841 to 6.6 million in 1851.

For many years, the majority of Irish people earned their living as farmers. Though many people still follow the routine nowadays, more and more people are moving to the cities to work in factories and offices. Life in the cities is very different from life in the countryside, where things move at a quieter and slower pace.

The Irish are famous for being warm-hearted and friendly. Oscar Wilde, a famous Irish writer, once said that the Irish were “the greatest talkers since the Greeks”. Since independence,Ireland has revived (复兴) its own culture of music, language, literature and singing. Different areas have different styles of old Irish songs which are sung without instruments. Other kinds of Irish music use many different instruments such as the violin, whistles, ete.

    4. What does the underlined word “vanquish” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A. Conquer. B. Ruin.

    C. Protect. D. Free.

    5. Why did the population of Ireland once decrease greatly?

    A. The Irish were killed by the English rulers.

    B. The Irish were affected by a deadly disease.

    C. The Irish suffered from food and work shortage.

    D. The Irish were not eager to give birth to babies.

    6. How did most Irish people make their living?

    A. By working in government.

    B. By working in the fields.

    C. By trading with other countries.

    D. By performing musical instruments.

    7. What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Life in Ireland

    B. The Independence of Ireland

    C. A Very Difficult History

    D. Ireland, Past and Present

A    5. C    6. B    7. D

For hundreds of years, the Irish people fought against the English.(数百年来,爱尔兰人与英国人作战。) The problems started in the 16th century when English rulers tried to vanquish Ireland.(这些问题始于16世纪,当时英国统治者试图vanquish爱尔兰。)

In the 1840s the main crop, potatoes, was affected by disease and about 750, 000 people died of hunger. This, and a shortage of work, forced many people to leave Ireland and live in the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada. As a result, the population fell from 8.2 million in 1841 to 6.6 million in 1851.(19世纪40年代,主要作物马铃薯受到疾病的影响,大约75万人死于饥饿。

For many years, the majority of Irish people earned their living as farmers.(多年来,大多数爱尔兰人以务农为生。)

Ireland has had a very difficult history.(爱尔兰有一段非常艰难的历史。) Though many people still follow the routine nowadays, more and more people are moving to the cities to work in factories and offices. Life in the cities is very different from life in the countryside, where things move at a quieter and slower pace.(尽管现在很多人仍然按部就班,但是越来越多的人搬到城市的工厂和办公室工作。 Since independence,Ireland has revived (复兴) its own culture of music, language, literature and singing. Different areas have different styles of old Irish songs which are sung without instruments. Other kinds of Irish music use many different instruments such as the violin, whistles, ete.(自独立以来,爱尔兰复兴了自己的音乐、语言、文学和歌唱文化。

    C

A woman who lost one leg in a traffic accident is seeking to break a world record by completing 102 marathon-length runs in 102 days. A marathon is a race that goes 42 kilometers.

Jacky Hunt-Broersma, who lives in the Western American state of Arizona, set her goal last month. And every day since then, she has been running the distance of a marathon. Most of the time, she runs on roads and trails near her home. Sometimes she completes her runs on a running machine. If she keeps successfully completing marathon-length runs every day, she would reach her goal three months later. She would then hold the world record for completing 102 back-to-back marathon runs.

The current world record of 101 marathons was set on April 10 by British runner Kate Jayden. The 35-year-old Jayden does not have a disability.

Hunt-Broersma said that until five years ago, she was not very active. But then she looked into running and decided to give it a try. The sport ended up being quite costly. Currently, she runs on a prosthetic (假体的) leg made out of a strong, light material known as carbon fiber. The carbon fiber blade she uses, which is designed specifically for running, costs about10,000.But Hunt-Broersma says her investment (投资) has been well worth it.

One of her recent runs was the world-famous Boston Marathon in Boston, Massachusetts. She finished that race, held on April 18, with a time of 5 hours and 5 minutes.

Hunt-Broersma’s main support team is her husband and their two young children. She is posting her progress online and has also gained a large social media following. As she nears the end of her goal, Hunt-Broersma is hoping to inspire a dream in others, regardless of (不管) their own physical limitations. She tells people, “You’re stronger than you think-and you’re capable of so much more.”

    8. What is Hunt-Broersma’s goal mentioned in the text?

    A. To make her body stronger. B. To show off her great power.

    C. To set a new world record. D. To prove she can live a normal life.

    9. What does Hunt-Broersma insist on doing every day now?

    A. Trying hard to earn money for her game. B. Training strictly for a famous marathon race.

    C. Running together with a British marathon runner. D. Running 42 kilometers either indoors or outdoors.

    10. Which of the following can best describe Hunt-Broersma?

    A. Caring. B. Determined. C. Responsible. D. Intelligent.

    11. What effect does Hunt-Broersma hope her action will have?

    A. Encouraging others to achieve their goals. B. Having more people run the marathon race.

    C. Drawing more attention to the disabled. D. Getting more people into her support team.

    【答案】8 C    9. D    10. B    11. A

Forecasting the technological future is difficult. Back in the 1980s, the thought of carrying around a small, portable phone seemed to belong in the world of science fiction. Then in the 1990s, imagining a phone that would allow you to surf the Internet something that didn’t even exist until 1990 was unheard-of. Today, smartphones can surf the Web, run applications and play games, and those with a near field communication (NFC) chip can act as a way to make purchases. And they can still make phone calls, too.

So what will phones look like in 2050? Based upon phone customer behavior, I imagine the future phones will rely more on combiningour physical lives with our digital lives. They probably won’t be similar to the ones we’re reusing now. They’ll be built into other devices and products. Imagine a pair of glasses that can display a digital overlay on top of your physical surroundings.

I don’t think video chat is taking off despite services like Skype and FaceTime. Rather, the trend seems to be toward asynchronous (非同步的) communication. That means the two or more people in a conversation complete a discussion over time.

We might even see the phone part of phones disappear. Recent phone customer behavior suggests that texting is a more popular way to communicate than telephone calls. Future phones will need a way to display messages but don’t necessarily include voice communication.

Since we’re talking about 2050 here, there’s even the possibility that research into brain-computer interfaces (脑机接口) will have reached a point in which we won’t need a physical screen or microphone at all. Electronics could be built into clothing. You’d link the devices to an interface connected to your brain and post messages just through thought. I’d be a form of telepathy

But what do you think? Will we be wearing devices that let us communicate easily? Or will we be carrying around the iPhone 47 and answering texts between games of Angry Birds? Let us know your predictions.

    12. What will future phones be like according to the author?

    A. Texting may disappear.

    B. NFC chips can be used for purchasing.

    C. Phones will combine our lives with our work.

    D. Phones may be built into other products.

    13. With the development of brain-computer interfaces,                      .

    A. we may send messages just through thought

    B. phones can be connected directly to your brain

    C. clothing may be made into the screen of phones

    D. telepathy between people and animals may come true

    14. From the text, we know that          .

    A. people started surfing the Internet in the 1980s

    B. we will be carrying around the iPhone 47 in 2050

    C. the author’s prediction about phones is based on phone customer behavior

    D. the author is negative about the development of brain-computer interfaces

    15. Which column of the newspaper does the passage come from?

    A. Economy. B. Science.

    C. Health. D. Entertainment.

D    13. A    14. C    15. B

One of the bad things is that a peaceful group of people can quickly turn into a crazy panicked crowd.( 糟糕的事情之一是,一群平静的人很快就会变成一群疯狂恐慌的人。) What’s worse is that the stampede can be caused while there seems no actual danger.( 更糟糕的是,在没有实际危险的情况下,踩踏事件仍然可能发生。)

If you are in a crowd of moving peoplewet or uneven ground can be slippery(滑溜的) or dangerous, causing you to fall.(如果你在一群移动的人群中,潮湿的地面可能会很滑或很危险,导致你摔倒)可知,这是讲述潮湿地方你容易滑倒,以及空后Make sure you always know how to get out. Make yourself ware of the type of ground you are standing on. If you are in a crowd of moving people, wet or uneven round can be slippery or dangerous, causing you to fall.(一定要知道怎么出去。 中的the type of ground和后面的wet or uneven ground与选项中的where相互呼应,因此B选项No matter where you are(无论你在哪里)切合题意,符合此处语境。故选B

    4. discouraging→discouraged
    5. be后加an
    6. how→what

    9. solution→solutions
    10. became→become

I want to expressing my deepest gratitude to(我想表达最深切的谢意的人),因为先行词在定语从句中作介词to的宾语,故省略了关系代词who或者that,因此此句不需要再加him作宾语。故删掉him

故将how改为what

故将On改为In

To raise the awareness of environmental protection, our school organized a tree-planting activity in City Park last week.

With everything ready, we headed to the park where we started to work right away. We were divided into three groups with the first group digging holes, the second planting trees and the third watering the seedlings. Time flied. Within two hours, twenty young trees stood there on the hill, dancing in the wind. Tired as we were, breathing in the fresh air, we felt refreshed and amply rewarded.
