On the first school day, Socrates told his students, “Today, we’ll only learn one thing, that is to stretch(向前伸) your arms, and then try to swing (摆动) them backward.” He showed them and as a result of all the students laughed. “Sir, is it also needed to be learned?” one of the students asked.
“Of course! You think this is a simple thing, but it is difficult.” Socrates replied seriously. Hearing this, the students laughed even harder.
Without being a little angry, Socrates said, “In this class I’ll teach you how to learn this action well. After that, and from today on, you will do it 100 times a day.”
Ten days later, Socrates asked, “Who still sticks to swinging his arms?” About 80 % of the students put up their hands. Twenty days later, Socrates asked again, about 50% of them raised their hands. Three months later, Socrates asked again, “Who still insists on (坚持) that simple action of swing?” This time, only one student raised his hand. He was Plato, the great thinker.
Perseverance (坚持不懈) is the simplest yet most difficult thing in the world, because everyone can do it, but not everyone will do it. Only the one who can hold on to a simple thing may make it!

Here is an experiment (实验) to see how ants can organize some clever teamwork.
1. First you need some ants. You may have to wait until the summer to find them on paths around your home.
2. When you have found an ant, put a thin slice of fruit in front of it. It may eat some of it or carry bits away.

The ants go back and forth collecting food, to take it back to their nest (穴). When you move the fruit, the ants will still find it. But instead of making a new direct route (路线) to the food, they will follow each other through their old trail route.

Suppose that you have some free time to kill. There is an enjoyable short video to watch and an interesting 1,000-word article to read. You can only choose one of the two. Which one will you pick?
Perhaps the video will be your choice. Over the past few years, watching videos online has become a part of many people’s daily lives. The number of people who read long articles patiently has been cut down. Some people fear that videos will one day take the place of text. But in my opinion, this isn’t going to happen.
Videos can in fact help us learn new information more quickly. However, can they help us fully learn about the ancient world? Many historical stories were recorded using only texts. Only through the reading of these texts can we truly and fully learn about what happened during the ancient world and the knowledge people had got.
Short videos are a type of “instant culture”. They come into and leave our minds like flying cars. Often, we can’t help looking for the second video at once after we’ve finished watching one. But can we always remember and understand the contents (内容) of these videos? When we read a long article patiently, we often pay close attention to the contents. What’s more, texts allow us to use our imagination, while videos don’t.
In a word, videos might change the way people learn about the world and the way they make themselves happy, but texts will never be replaced. Texts are like immortal (不朽的) stars which shine from the past to the future.
31.Why does the writer think people will choose to watch a short video?
A.The 1,000-word article is not interesting at all.
B.Watching videos takes up too much time.
C.Fewer people can patiently read long articles.
D.Videos have taken the place of texts.
32.How can people fully learn about the ancient world according to the writer?
A.By reading texts. B.By using imagination.
C.By watching videos. D.By talking with old people.
33.What does the underlined word “instant” mean?
A.Slow. B.Quick. C.Small. D.Big.
34.What is the writer trying to do in the passage?
A.To give advice. B.To ask for help.
C.To express feelings. D.To show ideas.
35.Which of the following can be the best title?
A.Texts Will Never Be Replaced B.Texts—a Way to Learn about Past
C.Videos Are Enjoyable and Popular D.Videos—the Best to Kill Free Time

Dear Aunt Aggie,I’m having a problem with my classmate, Rena, at school. Unluckily, when Beth was writing back to me, she accidentally forwarded (无意间转发) the message to Rena! Now Rena is really angry with me and won’t talk to me, and Beth is unhappy as well. It may take time for her to be able to forgive you, but that’s up to her. Then you might want to do something nice for her. Perhaps send her some flowers to show that you’re truly sorry. Aggie

Have you ever been told a lie? Did you believe it and then tell someone else, without realizing it wasn’t true? Thanks to social media(媒体), this is happening more and more in today’s world. It is known as fake news. It became a big problem during the US presidential election(选举). People were posting untrue stories on the Internet about Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Thousands of people were sharing them, thinking they were true. People think it must be true if so many people have shared it. It isn’t just politics(政治) where it happens though. Shopping advertisements, celebrity gossip(名人流言), and even local news from your city can be fake news. Perhaps you or one of your friends has shared fake news in WeChat friend circle.
But how can you tell if it’s real or fake? Knowing about fake news can actually be very easy. First of all, “just because it’s on the Internet, it doesn’t make it true,” according to CNN’s AJ Willingham. He says there are different kinds of fake news. Some are designed by some websites. Some news has untrue titles or pictures. These things attract(吸引) people and make them click(点击) on the story.
Communications expert Melissa said that everyone should think carefully about what they read. Anyone can be fooled by fake news. “This doesn’t only happen to old people,” she told CNN, “Even the early education should be taught about communication, media and the Internet. Growing up with the Internet doesn’t necessarily mean you know it well.

Everybody wants to succeed, but how can we be successful? We must keep working hard to achieve our goals and it always begins first with a baby step. Why do we call them baby steps?
Baby steps are the first steps we take as an act of faith (信念). We see others stepping out and we want to show our ability to walk by following them. As we grow, we continue our development by taking extra (额外的) baby steps. Sometimes we fall; sometimes we fail. After that, all steps become an act of faith; we just become more practiced. If you say to yourself “I don’t want to make a fool of myself” or “I’d better be good at this”, you’ll probably never take the baby steps towards your goals and end up lying in your own self-pity.
As a culture, we focus on results. We think about every risk that must be taken to reach our goals. There are few people who are excellent performers of any tasks the first time they try them. They practice their skills and use their talents through baby steps before they are ready to prove (证明) them to the whole world.
So, take those baby steps to reach the goals. As you become more experienced, your baby steps become a walk, then a jump, and finally a sprint. That’s how our baby steps lead us through the marathon (马拉松) of life.
31.What does the writer mainly discuss in the passage?
A.The importance of baby steps. B.The power of faith in our life.
C.The abilities to achieve success. D.The cause of cultural differences.
32.Which of the following is the most important in taking baby steps?

B.Adults should learn from babies in dealing with hard tasks.
C.We must make full use of our skills in order to get rewards.
D.Baby steps are the first steps we take as an act of faith.
34.What does the underlined word “sprint” probably mean?
A.Long jump. B.Sudden stop. C.Hard climb. D.Fast run.
35.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Life Goals B.Baby Steps C.How to Succeed D.Practice Makes Perfect
