I was in Houston a few weeks ago, and needed to be back home in Austin by midmorning the next day. Though I usually left in the evening, for some reason last time I had to choose to set off after midnight.
I was on my way back to Austin when I realized I left an important file, and knew I had to return to get it. I took the first exit I could, but when I rounded the corner, an 18-wheeler was stopped dead in the exit lane. I swerved to avoid it, and then I realized that there was something wrong with my car. So I pulled into a small parking lot and unsurprisingly found the area deserted at 3:15 am. I’ve lived in urban areas most of my life. I’m fairly street-wise and don’t become frightened easily, but I knew I was in a pretty tough neighborhood.
There was no one in Houston to pick me up. I immediately locked the doors and picked up my phone to call a tow truck. Soon a young man knocked on my driver’s side window and asked if he could help me. Judging from his appearance, he was far from a mad man, but I knew he was far more likely to rob than help me. So I lied to him. After a while, he asked again, but this time I politely refused and told him the tow truck was due any minute. He finally said, “Madam, you need help. A tow truck in Houston will arrive anywhere between 45 minutes and approximately never (which I knew was true), and you aren’t going anywhere until you change your flat tire.”
After considering thoroughly, I got out. He looked surprised, but got right to work. He changed the tire, returned the seat to its place and said, “Thank you for letting me help you. You gave me a chance when most people would never open the door to someone like me. Would it be okay if I gave you a hug?” When I recovered, I gave him a giant hug. I left with a new tire and a renewed faith in human nature.
24.What’s the matter with the author’s car?
A.It couldn’t get started. B.Its oil ran out.
C.It was out of control. D.Its tire burst.
25.Why did the author lie to the man and refuse his help in the beginning?
A.Because she thought the man was playing jokes.
B.Because she thought the man might be a bad man.
C.Because she thought the man wanted to get a lift.
D.Because she thought the man was a mad man.
26.Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Stubborn but brave. B.Impolite and dishonest.
C.Cautious and brave. D.Generous but dishonest.
27.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A.Attitude Determines Everything B.Help in the Dead of Night
C.The Fight against Robbing on My Way D.An Unexpected Traffic Accident
    C
China is one of the first countries to breed a medical culture. In comparison with Western methods, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) adopts a vastly different approach. For thousands of years, Chinese people have accumulated rich experience in fighting all sorts of diseases, therefore forming a unique medical theory under the guidance of ancient Chinese philosophies.
The core behind TCM is that the human body's life is the consequence of the balance between yin and yang. Yang functions to safeguard us against outer harm, and yin is the inner base to store and provide energy. When the balance between the two aspects is disturbed, people fall ill.
One of the traditional techniques of TCM, acupuncture (针刺疗法), means insertion of needles into superficial structures of the body — usually at acupoints (穴位) —to restore the yin-yang balance. It is often accompanied by moxibustion (灸法), which involves burning the mugwort on or near the skin at an acupoint.
The first known text that clearly talks about something like acupuncture and moxibustion as it is practiced today is Yellow Emperor5s Inner Canon. It is the earliest and most important written work of TCM and is considered the most representative medical text in China.
Acupuncture and moxibustion have aroused the interest of international medical science circles. And TCM is gradually gaining worldwide recognition. The WHO issued a document in 2002 that appealed to more than 180 countries to adopt TCM as an alternative in their medical policies. In 2010, acupuncture and moxibustion of traditional Chinese medicine were added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO. Presently, TCM has been back in the news for its effectiveness in improving the cure rate of the COVID-19 since its outbreak in January 2020.
28.What does the underlined word "It" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
    A.Acupuncture. B.TCM. C.Yin-yang balance. D.Moxibustion.
29.What can we learn about Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon from the text?
    A.It distinguishes acupxincture from moxibustion.
B.It greatly boosts the development of TCM.
C.It stresses the importance of using acupoints.
D.It's a foundation of world medical research.
30.What is the writer's attitude towards TCM?
    A.Worried. B.Skeptical. C.Promising. D.Disapproving.
31.What might be talked about in the paragraph following the text?
A.Why TCM gets recognition from WHO.
B.How other countries adopt TCM well.
    C.Why TCM is gaining popularity.
D.How TCM helps in the present situation.

In autumn 2021, as leaders from across the globe gathered on Glasgow to talk about the impact of human-caused climate change, a group of artists, architects and researchers in Australia came a way to document the planet’ send by storing data in a massive metal stone in Tasmania. Known as Earth’s Black Box, the project, equal parts art installation and time capsule, aims to document the physical changes caused by global warming and humanity’s geopolitical response to them.
The installation’s name is a nod to a common aviation practice. The commercial airplane and private aircraft are equipped with a “black box”, a mechanism that automatically logs important flight details like altitude, airspeed and equipment functionality. These boxes, which are usually bright orange rather than black, are designed to withstand extreme temperatures as well as immense amounts of force and pressure. They are sometimes the only objects that survive a plane crash intact, allowing investigators to reconstruct a timeline of what went wrong in the aftermath.
Earth’s Black Box draws inspiration from these mechanisms. The vault (穹顶) will be made from specially designed, 3-inch-thick reinforced steel, chosen for its resistance to fire and water damage as well as its toughness and firmness. Along with the University of Tasmania and a collective of artists, an Australian communications firm plans to build the 33-foot-long vault in a remote part of western Tasmania. They chose the location for its relative geological and geopolitical stability. Unlike ar airplane’s flight recorder, however, Earth’s Black Box is not meant to withstand total planetary destruction. If Earth were to somehow explode, for instance, it probably wouldn’t survive. Instead, the artists and data scientists behind the project think of it as a way to log the progression of Earth’s current ecological collapse, which is already profoundly changing the environment.
“At its core, the box is intended to be a symbol of the disastrous situation we find our-selves in,” says Curtis, an expert on the project. “And more importantly, it’s intended to hold our leaders to account by being an unmissable structure that reminds them that their actions or inaction will be recorded for generations to come. ”
32.What is the purpose of Earth’s Black Box?
    A.To keep a record. B.To perform monitoring.
C.To handle downloads. D.To make predictions.
33.What does the underlined word "intact" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Bright and colorful. B.Inactive and disconnected.
C.Complete and undamaged. D.Important and multifunctional.
34.How is the steel used to build the Earth’s Black Box’s vault?
A.Leaky, tough and firm. B.Hot, breakable and explosive.
    C.Damp, physically stable and eco-friendly. D.Water-resistant, heat-resisting and solid.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Global Leaders Are Aiming at Global Warming
B.Human-caused Climate Change Is Having a Big Impact
C.Earth’s Black Box Warns of Its End Due to Climate Change
D.Earth’s Black Box Can Save Us from Disastrous Situations

Last Saturday, I organized a display with the theme of “Chinese Peking Opera” at the school's International Culture and Arts Festival in the School Lecture Hall, which was well received by everyone.
At the beginning, we listened to a speech on the history of Beijing Opera delivered by a famous artist. After that, there was a live performance of Beijing Opera. The artists dressed in costumes performed various stories that happened in the history of China. Besides, methods of drawing facial makeup were taught on the spot on the stage to all the students taking part in it.
As an organizer, I am proud of the activity because it not only enriches the after-school life of the students but also draws more attention to Chinese cultures.
