During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people under lockdown feel lonely and bored. “There is a loneliness epidemic (流行病),” said John Datlilo from Pennsylvania State University, US.
So he, together with an international team of researchers, studied how to reduce loneliness and increase positive feelings during the pandemic. According to their new study, reduced (减少) loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that require both concentration (全神贯注) and skill. When people keep eyes on what they are doing, they enter a state called “flow” Dattilo explained. “Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we value and that require us to concentrate fully to use our skills.”
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge of the task and your skill level. For example, if you’re trying to create a complex computer program but your skill level is low, then you may feel stressed instead of achieving “flow”, On the contrary (相反地),if the task, is too easy, then you may feel bored and “flow” will not appear, either.
If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.
“When we enter a state of flow, we become absorbed and focused, and we experience momentary enjoyment,” Dattilo said. “When we leave a state of flow, we are often surprised by how much time has passed.”
However, watching television usually doesn’t help people enter flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren’t any challenges.
“People tend to thrive (茁壮成长) on healthy activities and challenge,” said Dattilo. “We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives.”
    28. According to the Passage 2, Dattilo studied ________.
    A. why people feel lonely B. how to reduce loneliness
    C. what enjoyable activities are D. why people like a new challenge
    29. How do people feel when they enter the “flow” state?
    A. They are concentrating and happy.
    B. They feel time passes too slowly.
    C. They feel stressed and tired.
    D. They are lonely and bored.
    30. The underlined word “complex” in passage probably means ________.
    A. normal B. difficult C. basic D. complete
    31. What can we do to reduce loneliness during lockdown according to Dattilo?
    A. Follow a simple lifestyle.
    B. Learn as many skills as possible.
    C. Do some enjoyable and challenging tasks.
    D. Complete impossible challenges.
    D
My name is Pablo. I think I’m a lucky guy. I have a good family, and we live in a nice neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. People travel here from many countries for their vacations. We have beautiful beaches, hotels, restaurants, shopping and sports.
However, in my beautiful hometown, there are also very poor neighborhoods. These areas are crowded and have a lot of crime (犯罪). Life is terrible for many of the children in these areas. Some don’t really have a childhood because they’re homeless and live on the streets. They don’t have education. They don’t have enough food. Many use drugs or have illnesses or other problems.
Last year, I came back to Puerto Vallarta from my university in Mexico City, I spent one year as a volunteer with an organization called Outreach International. They have several programs. I volunteered for one program to help street children. I worked in a home for street children (all boys, at this one). At this home, the boys have a place to sleep and three meals daily. The home keeps the boys off the streets. It shows them another way of life. As a volunteer, I helped to prepare meals. I taught games—such as basketball, football and art. I helped the kids with their homework. These kids can be fun. They have a lot of energy, but they’re also really tough (坚韧的). Their long and difficult time on the streets make them strong and not always “sweet little children”.
At these boys’ home, I met two other volunteers—Brian from Canada and Greg from Australia. In many ways, we were very similar. We were the same age, came from good homes and had a good education. They were both college students like me. We became very good friends. Now, we email each other.
It was the best and most difficult year of my life. I learned a lot that year.
    32. We can learn that the writer ________.

What kind of chores do you usually do around the house? Maybe you clean your room, wash the dishes or sweep the floor. All these are indoor chores.
But in many places, especially in rural areas in the US, kids have different outdoor chores during different seasons.
In fall, the most common outdoor chore is sweeping leaves. Trees lose their leaves in fall. It is up to each family to put the leaves in big trash bags.
After a heavy snowfall in winter, children help clear snow in the front yard. Otherwise, it may be hard for family to leave their homes.
Spring and summer bring lots of rain and sun, which makes the grass in people’s yards grow tall. It is common for kids to mow (割草) their yards to keep them fresh and neat.
Doing all these chores might sound like a lot of work. Most families give their kids a little bit of money for doing them. People who don’t have children might even pay neighborhood kids to do it.

Most of your textbooks are single-use. After graduating, old textbooks are thrown away, which is a big waste of money and paper.
In China students buy 2.8 billion new textbooks every year. If the following year’s students can reuse these books, it would save over 20 billion yuan per year. That’s enough money to build 40,000 primary schools.
Now many school students in several Chinese cities are reusing music, art, science, and IT textbooks. That’s because students don’t have to take notes in their textbooks for these subjects, which makes them suitable for recycling.
However, these books are only a small amount of the total number of textbooks. As there is no good way for using second-hand textbooks, most textbooks still end up as waste.
Changes in curriculum (课程) also make it hard to reuse textbooks. “I’m among the first group of students to take classes after the recent curriculum reform (改革), so I have to buy new textbooks.” Sun Run, a high school student from Beijing said.
    28.The underlined word “single-use” in Paragraph 1 means “________”.
A.very expensive B.only to be used once
    C.lasting for a long time D.made of high-quality paper
    29.From Paragraph 2, we know that ________.
    A.reusing textbooks can be expensive
B.China doesn’t have enough money for textbooks
C.China still needs 40,000 primary schools
D.China spends billions on textbooks every year
30.Which is one of the reasons to make textbooks recycling so hard?
A.Changes in school curriculum. B.Not enough primary schools.
C.A general dislike for second-hand books. D.No protection for second-hand books.
31.After reading the passage, what do you think will happen next?
A.Paper textbooks won’t be used anymore.
B.The curriculum reform must be stopped.
C.We may pay more attention to textbooks recycling.
D.Students are not allowed to take any notes in textbooks.

Cli-Fi is a fresh form of literature. I refers to "climate-change fiction". In these books, climate change is made central to the stories. These stories help people understand the result of climate change. The past few years saw many writers try their hands at Cli-Fi.
Because of climate change, more and more natural disasters(灾难)are taking place around the world. However, for people who are not directly influenced by the disasters, it's hard to imagine the damage(损害)— life without electricity or food. What is it like? Another thing that is hard to imagine is the future. What would the world be like if Earth temperatures continued to rise?
Cli-Fi stories can help us think about just the possible future of Earth. These novels can make experiences more real than research papers. That, in my opinion, is the most important role Cli-Fi pays.
One recent example of Cli-F is South Pole Station by Ashley Shelby. In the book, artist Cooper Gosling travels to a research station at the South Pole. As a result of global warming(全球变暖), the environment there is very strange. Gosling has a hard time getting used to the environment. The book is written in such a way that readers can almost experience the trouble along with Gosling.
I really liked this novel. I felt as if I were at the South Pole with Gosling. I also enjoyed how Shelby added real science to the story.
So take a look at Cli-Fi—especially if you are bored with the usual forms of literature.
    46. What do all Cli-Fi stories have in common?
    A. They describe a natural disaster.
    B. They take place at the South Pole.

    B. imagine life and research at the South Pole
    C. understand the result of climate change
    D. take an interest in the latest research papers
    48. In the writer's opinion, what is the most important role Cli-Fi plays?
    A. Adding real science to the stories.
    B. Describing life without electricity or food.
    C. Including natural disasters in the stories.
    D. Allowing readers to experience climate change.
    49. What can readers read about in South Pole Station?
