Stinky Luosifen, or river snail rice noodles, became the most popular Chinese New Year’s snack this year, as Chinese people prepare for a stay-at-home holiday due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Traditionally, dried fruits, sweets, and pastries are a must-buy “three-piece set” snacks for the Chinese New Year. But this year, new competitors are taking over.
According to data from Tmall and Taobao, both e-commerce platforms under Alibaba, the turnover of Luosifen, or river snail rice noodles, on the first day of the online festival was 15 times bigger than last year, with the number of buyers growing nine times year on year. Self-heating hot pots rank only second to Luosifen. The largest group of buyers was the post-90s generation.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people under lockdown feel lonely and bored. “There is a loneliness epidemic (流行病),” said John Datlilo from Pennsylvania State University, US.
So he, together with an international team of researchers, studied how to reduce loneliness and increase positive feelings during the pandemic. According to their new study, reduced (减少) loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that require both concentration (全神贯注) and skill. When people keep eyes on what they are doing, they enter a state called “flow” Dattilo explained. “Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we value and that require us to concentrate fully to use our skills.”
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge of the task and your skill level. For example, if you’re trying to create a complex computer program but your skill level is low, then you may feel stressed instead of achieving “flow”, On the contrary (相反地)，if the task, is too easy, then you may feel bored and “flow” will not appear, either.
If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.
“When we enter a state of flow, we become absorbed and focused, and we experience momentary enjoyment,” Dattilo said. “When we leave a state of flow, we are often surprised by how much time has passed.”
However, watching television usually doesn’t help people enter flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren’t any challenges.
“People tend to thrive (茁壮成长) on healthy activities and challenge,” said Dattilo. “We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives.”

My name is Pablo. I think I’m a lucky guy. I have a good family, and we live in a nice neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. People travel here from many countries for their vacations. We have beautiful beaches, hotels, restaurants, shopping and sports.
However, in my beautiful hometown, there are also very poor neighborhoods. These areas are crowded and have a lot of crime (犯罪). Life is terrible for many of the children in these areas. Some don’t really have a childhood because they’re homeless and live on the streets. They don’t have education. They don’t have enough food. Many use drugs or have illnesses or other problems.
Last year, I came back to Puerto Vallarta from my university in Mexico City, I spent one year as a volunteer with an organization called Outreach International. They have several programs. I volunteered for one program to help street children. I worked in a home for street children (all boys, at this one). At this home, the boys have a place to sleep and three meals daily. The home keeps the boys off the streets. It shows them another way of life. As a volunteer, I helped to prepare meals. I taught games—such as basketball, football and art. I helped the kids with their homework. These kids can be fun. They have a lot of energy, but they’re also really tough (坚韧的). Their long and difficult time on the streets make them strong and not always “sweet little children”.

Most of your textbooks are single-use. After graduating, old textbooks are thrown away, which is a big waste of money and paper.
In China students buy 2.8 billion new textbooks every year. If the following year’s students can reuse these books, it would save over 20 billion yuan per year. That’s enough money to build 40,000 primary schools.

Cli-Fi is a fresh form of literature. I refers to "climate-change fiction". In these books, climate change is made central to the stories. These stories help people understand the result of climate change. The past few years saw many writers try their hands at Cli-Fi.
Because of climate change, more and more natural disasters（灾难）are taking place around the world. However, for people who are not directly influenced by the disasters, it's hard to imagine the damage（损害）— life without electricity or food. What is it like? Another thing that is hard to imagine is the future. What would the world be like if Earth temperatures continued to rise?

One recent example of Cli-F is South Pole Station by Ashley Shelby. In the book, artist Cooper Gosling travels to a research station at the South Pole. As a result of global warming（全球变暖）, the environment there is very strange. Gosling has a hard time getting used to the environment. The book is written in such a way that readers can almost experience the trouble along with Gosling.
I really liked this novel. I felt as if I were at the South Pole with Gosling. I also enjoyed how Shelby added real science to the story.
So take a look at Cli-Fi—especially if you are bored with the usual forms of literature.
