The text said I think I made a mistake in coming here. My twenty-year-old son Aaron is a biology/pre-med major at Morehouse College in Atlanta and at the time of the text was a rising junior. But the “here” referenced in his text wasn’t Morehouse; it was Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He was there for a ten-week summer internship. Why? What’s wrong? I texted back.I’m frustrated… I’m wasting my time here.I wrote back. Let’s talk about it.But he responded, It’s gonna have to wait till later.I remember how helpless I felt as I ended the exchange. Okay. Keep the faith, son. Things happen for a reason. From previous conversations, I fully understood his angst. Aaron’s experiments exploring the connection between fructose and hypertension weren’t going well. He couldn’t figure out what he was doing wrong. His repeated requests for in-house assistance left him feeling incompetent and further confused. His feelings of isolation and his inability to bond with the other research students compounded the already precarious state of his emotions.Plus, I suspected a recent encounter at a science conference had chipped away at my son’s self-esteem. A couple of attendees implied that students from historically black colleges and universities (HBCSs), like my son, were not as intellectually gifted as those who attended other institutions of higher learning. The emotion I heard in Aaron’s voice every time he mentioned the incident suggested the instigators had succeeded in making him doubt his ability and his academic choices. When my son finally called, I did my best to encourage and reassure him. I reminded him of his proven capabilities and past achievements. He’d scored in the 95th percentile on the ACT. He’d been named a National Achievement Finalist. He’d been offered scholarships at a variety of colleges and universities. He was at Morehouse College on a full academic scholarship. The Case research coordinators wouldn’t have selected him if they thought he was incapable of doing the work.I even offered suggestions for coping with the situation — meet privately with the professor in charge, do the same with the administrator who recommended you to the program, solicit advice from friends with research experience at other programs, stay hydrated, get plenty of sleep, and try to exercise. But what I didn’t do was suggest he leave the program. Instead, I said, “You know you can’t quit, don’t you?” His silence indicated that wasn’t what he wanted to hear. Nonetheless, I continued, “Because if you do, you’ll always wonder what might have happened had you stayed. Besides, sometimes it’s better to be dismissed than to give up on yourself.”Later, while second-guessing my response, I gave in and said he could leave the program if the situation didn’t improve. But when I spoke with my seventy-five-year-old mother about her grandson’s struggles, she instructed sternly, “Do not let him come home!” Furthermore, she said as soon as our phone call ended, she was contacting her morning walking partner so they could go into full prayer-warrior mode. She vowed to do the same with the ladies in her Christian fellowship group. As amused as I was by my mother’s impassioned church-lady response, I, too, am a firm believer in the power of prayer. My husband and I both sent up daily prayers on our only child’s behalf, but with the understanding that the outcome — good or bad — was one we would have to accept. In Aaron’s case, not only did his experiments continue to fail, but a series of additional bad breaks and setbacks transpired. One morning, while making breakfast, he inadvertently set off the fire alarm, which drew the fire department and led to his dorm’s evacuation. His plans to shadow a local emergency room doctor vanished in a never-ending shuffle of administrative paperwork. A black male medical student from whom he’d hope to seek advice all but ignored him. And just when we all thought it couldn’t get any worse, Aaron’s efforts to relax and stay fit led to him hyper-extending his knee during a pickup game of basketball. It pained me, not only to watch my child fail, but to witness him do so in such a devastating and spectacular fashion. Deep down, though, I knew learning how to gracefully accept a catastrophic outcome was an experience he needed. Any attempt by me to assist in his rescue would only impede his growth and maturity. His life wasn’t in any real danger, I reminded myself repeatedly. He wasn’t being harassed or discriminated against. And the internship, not to mention his suffering, would be over by summer’s end.Aaron informed us that his lack of lab results meant he would have no research findings to exhibit on presentation day. He would also likely have to forfeit the program’s final paycheck. Resigned to such an outcome, I began focusing on how to help my son manage his disappointment and care for his bruised ego upon his return home. So imagine my shock and disbelief when I received a text message on July 13th — accompanied by several crying emojis — that read: THE EXPERIMENT WORKED!!!It turned out that my son’s failures in the lab were due, in large part, to a bad chemical reagent. Once the error was discovered and corrected, everything took a turn for the better. Not only did he present his findings at Case upon his return to Morehouse in the fall, but my son and another Morehouse student were selected to present their research projects at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. More recently, the same summer research landed him an invite to the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS 2017) that was held in Phoenix, Arizona. Last but not least, there’s been talk that the work might be published in a science-related academic journal. In the end, my son experienced a victory that no one privy to his situation could have ever predicted. It was a victory that, in my opinion, can best be described as miraculous. What I most hope he takes away from the experience is a greater appreciation for the power of patience, persistence and prayer. I think what my son and I both learned is that sometimes, just on the other side of what you’re convinced is a total and complete failure, is actually a win so stunning and bright that you have no choice but to bow your head in acknowledgment and appreciation.— Lori D. I never saw a single person I knew from middle school. At home I was just as lonely. “My brothers and sister all fit in.” I thought, coming in the door after another bad day at school. “Why can’t I?”Mom was there waiting for me. “Karole, your bedroom’s a disaster. Why can’t you keep it clean?” The last thing I needed was criticism from my mother. What had happened to the mother who used to snuggle (依偎) with me on the sofa, loving me with complete acceptance? Who thought everything I did was wonderful? I didn’t bother trying to explain my unhappiness. It was easier to hide in my bedroom, without saying a word, like I did every afternoon.Clearing off some space, I sat down at my desk. Yet another thing I wasn’t good at anymore. My grades had slipped along with my confidence. I turned to a new page in my notebook and started working out the first problem. Almost immediately, I saw I’d made a mistake. “Wrong again!” I thought. “You can’t do anything right!” I tore the paper out of my notebook, balled it up in my fist and threw it at the wastepaper basket. The ball landed on the floor. I heard my mother’s voice in my head, “Why can’t you keep your room clean?”By the time I finished my homework, the floor was littered with crumpled (弄皱的) paper. It gave me a kind of satisfaction to see the mess I’d made. Like it was proof of all my shortcomings. Every time I looked at those crumpled balls, I reminded myself what a failure I was. But my unhappiness stayed hidden away, just like those mistakes. With my face a mask of indifference, no one knew what I was really feeling. Who would want to listen? One day, I came home to an empty house. It was a relief not to be met with Mom’s latest complaint. “Nothing I do is right in her eyes.” I thought. “Or anyone else’s, including mine.” When I opened my bedroom door, I froze at the sight of a neat and orderly room.I sat down at my desk, staring at those words. 1.pre-med [priːˈmed] n. 果糖4.encounter [ɪnˈkaʊntə] n遭遇,冲突5.isolation [ˌaɪsəˈleɪʃən] n. 1.A recent encounter at a science conference had chipped away at my son’s self-esteem. 2.I even offered suggestions for coping with the situation——solicitadvice from friends with research experience at other programs, stay hydrated, get plenty of sleep, and try to exercise. It pained me, not only to watch my child fail, but to witness him do so in such a devastating and spectacular fashion. He wasn’t being harassed or discriminated against. 1.I’m frustrated… I’m wasting my time here. I remember how helpless I felt as I ended the exchange. 3. Mom had obviously decided to clean it herself. I was surprised to see the clean floor below my bed. All the crumpled paper had disappeared. Except one. A single sheet lay in plain view. I picked up the sheet and recognized Mom’s perfect handwriting, saying “I have found that I have also been very critical of you lately. For that, I am truly sorry. I only expect that you are to be your same sweet self.”I sat down at my desk, staring at those words. A weight seemed to lift from me. I realized that Mom still loved me the same way. When she got home, I found the confidence to let down my guard and talk to her about how I felt. She and my father teamed up to offer some ideas that might help, like joining after-school clubs. I seemed like everything changed in high school, but one heartfelt note set the stage for the rest of my teenage years.
