“There’s our guide,” I said to the bus driver, pointing at a woman I’d never seen before. The driver stopped and opened the door for me to step off.
“You must be Becky,” she said. “My name is Anne.”
As tour director for the group of forty-three, I quickly confirmed with Anne the sites we would like to see during the next four hours. Then we climbed aboard to begin our tour of Washington, D.C.
After introducing Anne to the tourists, I handed the microphone to her and made my way toward the last seat. Conversation with a guide usually ended there. But on that day, we managed a brief chat in the shade of an elm tree along the National Mall. I was amazed to discover that we were both born in Ohio and that my doctor, Kiefhaber, was her dad.
My parents had told me the story all my life. I was born with my left leg turned inward (向内的). Right away, a doctor placed a cast (石膏)from my hip to my tiny toes. He monitored my progress closely. Thankfully, my leg straightened out and grew strong. By ten months, l was cast-free and taking my first steps. Amidst the joy, however, my parents feared the final bill for the months of treatment. They already struggled to make ends meet. How would they ever afford the specialist’s charges for that length of treatment? When the envelope arrived, Dad took a deep breath, opened it, and stared at the amount due. Surely, it was a mistake. The bill said they owed only twenty dollars.
The doctor who showed such great kindness to my family was Anne’s dad. I don’t believe those few surprising moments under the elm tree were just a coincidence. Anne needed to hear the wonderful story about her dad. Anne and I are now friends, with a connection that goes beyond our hometown. We are connected by kindness – Kiefhaber kindness – which touched my family long ago and inspires me yet today.
    1. What do we know about the author?
    A. She has walking difficulty at present. B. She seldom chats with guides in work.
    C. She is a tour director working in Ohio. D. She’s been friends with Anne since childhood.
    2. How did the author’s parents feel when paying the bill for treatment?
    A. Depressed. B. Curious. C. Satisfied. D. Grateful.
    3. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. Lifelong Friendship B. What a coincidence!
    C. Connected by Kindness D. An Unforgettable Tour
    【答案】1 B 2. D 3. C
根据第四段“Conversation with a guide usually ended there. But on that day, we managed a brief chat in the shade of an elm tree along the National Mall.(与导游的对话通常到此结束。但那天,我们在国家广场旁的一棵榆树荫下聊了一会儿。)”可知,通常作者与当地的导游的交流仅限于互相介绍和确认行程,而不会进行其他的闲聊。故选B项。
    【2题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Amidst the joy, however, my parents feared the final bill for the months of treatment. They already struggled to make ends meet. How would they ever afford the specialist’s charges for that length of treatment? When the envelope arrived, Dad took a deep breath, opened it, and stared at the amount due. Surely, it was a mistake. The bill said they owed only twenty dollars.(然而,在喜悦中,我的父母担心几个月治疗的最终账单。他们已经在努力维持收支平衡。他们怎么能负担得起专家治疗那么长时间的费用?当信封到达时,爸爸深吸了一口气,打开信封,盯着应付的金额。当然,这是一个错误。账单上说他们只欠二十美元。)”可知,作者的父母原本很担心无法负担治疗费,但是收到账单时,看到手术费只要20美元,由此推测他们支付治疗费用时,对医生充满感激之情。故选D项。
    【3题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“I don’t believe those few surprising moments under the elm tree were just a coincidence.(我不认为在榆树下的那些令人惊讶的时刻只是巧合。)”以及“We are connected by kindness – Kiefhaber kindness – which touched my family long ago and inspires me yet today.(我们是通过善良联系在一起的——基夫哈伯的善良——这在很久以前就感动了我的家人,今天也激励着我。)”
    B
For the first time ever, more than half of all meals eaten out in the UK are from fast food restaurants. Burgers, fried chicken, pizzas, and takeout curry now account for 50.4% of meals bought outside the home. That’s up from 47.3% in 2008. And it represents a shocking 5.54 billion fast food meals a year.
But why? The answers are simple. For a start, many see fast food as a cheap option, which is a priority (优先考虑) for a lot of people in these times of economic hardship. And it seems that most people prefer familiar chains. “Families want to know what they are getting, and with the likes of McDonald’s and KFC they know it’s a consistent experience and good value,” an industry expert explained.
Many fast food chains are adapting their menus to appeal directly to middleclass families. McDonald’s, for example, has started using free-range eggs and organic milk, together with fruit and vegetables for children’s Happy Meals. And most chains are offering good discounts to attract customers. In London, for example, more than 25% of fast food purchases are made with a promotional voucher (促销券).
But is fast food really such good value for money? Not according to some. “Actually, healthy ingredients are cheaper… and offer better value for money,” a food expert explained. “On the face of it, it may seem like the cheapest option, but when you look at the labels, you’ll find that you’re only getting 50% of meat in your chicken nuggets, for example.”
So, what’s the solution? An online survey on food has a number of suggestions.
“If you want to eat well and cheaply, simply buy lots of basic ingredients, then cook in large amounts. Afterwards, you can freeze any leftover food and eat it later,” says Molly Bates of Birmingham.
“Beans, lentils and pulses are all excellent forms of protein and a lot cheaper than meat and fish. They’re also very tasty,” says Kylie Jones of Brighton.
    4. What do the statistics in paragraph 1 show?
    A. More people in the UK than before prefer to eat out.
    B. More than 50 percent of UK people eat out every year.
    C. An increasing percentage of meals eaten out is fast food.
    D. There are more fast food restaurants in the UK than before.
    5. According to paragraph 3, customers are attracted to fast food mainly because________.
    A. it contains various foods B. it helps save money
    C. it provides healthy diets D. it brings convenience
    6. What might be discussed in the following paragraph?
    A. The harmful influences of eating fast food. B. Another reason for the popularity of fast food.
    C. Different methods of cooking delicious food. D. More practices of eating well and cheaply.
根据第一段“For the first time ever, more than half of all meals eaten out in the UK are from fast food restaurants.(有史以来第一次,英国外出就餐的一半以上来自快餐店)”可知,在英国50%在外吃饭的都是吃快餐,即人们对快餐的需求非常大。
根据第三段“And most chains are offering good discounts to attract customers. In London, for example, more than 25% of fast food purchases are made with a promotional voucher(大多数连锁店都在提供优惠折扣来吸引顾客。在伦敦,举个例子,有超过25%的购买快餐是用一个促销券)”可知,顾客被快餐连锁店吸引,主要是因为优惠的价格,能节省一些钱。故填B。
    【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“So, what’s the solution? An online survey on food has a number of suggestions.(那么,解决方案是什么?一项关于食物的在线调查给出了许多建议)”可知,下文介绍的是一些网上调查中人们分享的想吃得好又便宜的一些做法,并分别举例说明。故选D。
    C
Are you a moviegoer? If, like me, you’re a fan of film, then there’s no better place to watch something than on the big screen at the cinema. You enter the dark theatre and take your seat, ready to be entertained. But while you are absorbed in some movie magic, many others are now getting their film fix at home.
Over the last few years, cinemas have seen a comeback. Customers have been attracted by comfortable seats, and lots of choice of things to watch. Multiplexes in particular can screen up to twenty films at the same time, suiting all different tastes. In addition, 3D and even 4D movies can give the audience an extra immersive experience. So, what’s not to like about a trip to the cinema?
One answer to that question is convenience. Rather than going out it’s so much easier to stay in and watch movies on a TV screen via an online streaming service. There’s plenty of choice, and it’s relatively cheap as well. But, personally, I find there’re too many distractions, and watching at home is not such an event. I miss the cinema!
The coronavirus pandemic has put the future of cinemas under the spotlight. Some have had to close because of reduced ticket sales. In the UK, it’s brought about a surge in TV watching and online streaming. It’s reported that half of UK adults will keep and continue using their new streaming subscriptions.
This isn’t great news for cinemas. They rely on the release of a big blockbuster to bring the crowds back, but the launch of new films, such as James Bond: No Time To Die, are being delayed. Disney has released its $200m blockbuster, Mulan, online instead of in movie theatres. John Fithian, from the National Association of Theatre Owners, told Variety magazine: “This idea of waiting out the pandemic to make your movies more profitable doesn’t make sense to me. There won’t be as much of an industry left to play your movies in if you do that.”
    7. What’s mainly talked about in paragraph 2?
    A. Why people don’t like to go to the cinema.
    B. What has helped cinemas make a comeback.
    C. How cinemas have developed in the last few years.
    D. Whether cinemas can remain popular in the future.
    8. What does the author say about watching films at home?
    A. It can hardly suit all different tastes. B. It’s time-consuming due to distractions.
    C. It offers a variety of films free of charge. D. It’s not as enjoyable an experience as going to cinemas.
    9. What does the underlined word “surge” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Sudden increase. B. Short-term benefit.
    C. potential influence. D. Fierce competition.
    10. Which view would John Fithian agree with?
A The release of blockbusters cannot bring the crowds back.
    B. The pandemic hasn’t had a great effect on the film industry.
    C. Delaying the release of blockbusters can bring in more profits.
    D. Releasing films online is an alternative during the pandemic.
B 8. D 9. A 10. D
根据第二段“Over the last few years, cinemas have seen a comeback. Customers have been attracted by comfortable seats, and lots of choice of things to watch. Multiplexes in particular can screen up to twenty films at the same time, suiting all different tastes. In addition, 3D and even 4D movies can give the audience an extra immersive experience.(在过去的几年里,电影院已经卷土重来。舒适的座椅和众多的观赏选择吸引了顾客。特别是多厅影院,可以同时放映20部电影,适合各种口味。此外,3D甚至4D电影可以给观众带来额外的身临其境的体验。)”可知,第二段主要讲的是电影院又流行起来的原因,故选B项。
    【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“But, personally, I find there’re too many distractions, and watching at home is not such an event.(但就我个人而言,我发现有太多让人分心的事情,在家看电影完全不是那么回事)”可推知,作者在家看电影没有在影院看电影那种愉快的感受。
根据画线词上文“The coronavirus pandemic has put the future of cinemas under the spotlight. Some have had to close because of reduced ticket sales.” 故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Disney has released its $200m blockbuster, Mulan, online instead of in movie theatres. This idea of waiting out the pandemic to make your movies more profitable doesn’t make sense to me. There won’t be as much of an industry left to play your movies in if you do that.(迪士尼已将其2亿美元的大片《花木兰》从影院改为在线发布。在我看来,等待疫情结束让你的电影更赚钱的想法是没有意义的。如果你这样做,就不会有那么多的产业可以播放你的电影了)”可推知,他是支持疫情期间不要延迟上映新的电影,在网上上映不失为一种好的选择。故选D项。
    第二节:(共5个小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Looking for a relaxing holiday? Need to refresh yourself after a stressful few months? ____11____
First of all, what exactly is a spa? This may include exercise classes, massage, mud baths, body treatment, and so on.
____13____ In Japan, traditional hot springs have attracted visitors for centuries. And thermal (温泉) baths have been found in the ruins of the Cretan palace of Knossos that date back to the 2nd millennium BC.
____14____ They established a number of towns around thermal waters. In the 18th century, spas became the fashionable places to go on holiday. Spas in the UK were very popular with British royals.
A typical day in Carlsbad in the 19th century went as follows. Visitors got up at 6:00 am to drink the waters and be serenaded by a band. Next, came a light breakfast, a bath in the waters, and then lunch. In the afternoon, visitors went sight-seeing, walked or attended concerts. ____15____ Guests returned to their hotels at about 9pm to rest until six the following morning. Visitors would stay for as long as a month.
Today, spa treatments are more popular than ever, although drinking the water isn’t as common as it used to be. But of course, if you want some mineral water, you can always get a bottle of Perrier from the mini-bar!
    A. Here’re some tips for you.
    B. Perhaps you need to go to a spa!
    C. Of course, there’s nothing new about spas.
    D. After dinner, there were musical performances.
    E. Spas were introduced to the UK in the 17th century.
    F. But nowadays, a “spa” can mean a variety of things.

B 12. F 13. C 14. G 15. D
根据第一段“Looking for a relaxing holiday? Need to refresh yourself after a stressful few months?(想要一个轻松的假期吗?在经历了几个月的压力后,需要恢复精神吗)”以及第二段“First of all, what exactly is a spa(首先,spa是什么)”可知第一段是先提出问题,紧接着第二段进一步解释了水疗,所以设空处是衔接上下文的内容,即提出水疗,选项“Perhaps you need to go to a spa!(也许你需要体验一下水疗)”符合语义,故选B。
    【12题详解】
根据第二段“First of all, what exactly is a spa? Traditionally, spas were places where you “took the waters”– meaning you drank some of the water or bathed in it.(首先,spa到底是什么?传统上,温泉是你喝一些水或在里面洗澡)”可知,第二段段首先提出什么是spa,然后解释了传统定义,那么意味着传统之外的定义,即新的定义或现代的定义。选项F“But nowadays, a “spa” can mean a variety of things.(但是现在,spa可以有各种各样的意思)”符合语义,故选F。
根据第二段“First of all, what exactly is a spa? Traditionally, spas were places where you “took the waters”– meaning you drank some of the water or bathed in it.(首先,spa到底是什么?传统上,温泉是你喝一些水或在里面洗澡)”可知,第二段已经解释过spa的传统及现代定义。所以此处关于什么是温泉大家已经比较熟知,因此会作一个总结概括,即关于温泉定义已经讲述清楚。选项以及下句“In Japan, traditional hot springs have attracted visitors for centuries.(在日本,几个世纪以来,温泉吸引了很多游客)”可知,温泉已经不是新鲜事物。选项C“Of course, there’s nothing new about spas.(当然,水疗已经不是说明新鲜事)”符合语义,故选C。
根据第四段“They established a number of towns around thermal waters. In the 18th century, spas became the fashionable places to go on holiday. Spas in the UK were very popular with British royals.(他们在温泉周围建立了许多城镇。他们在温泉周围建立了许多城镇。在18世纪,温泉浴场成为了一种时尚的度假场所。英国皇室很喜欢泡温泉。在18世纪,温泉浴场成为了一种时尚的度假场所。英国皇室很喜欢泡温泉)”可知,此处讲述温泉的建立,普及与皇室的关系。因此总起论述是皇室促成了温泉的出现及普及。选项G“It was the Romans who made spas popular in Europe.(是罗马人使水疗在欧洲流行起来的)”符合语义,故选G。
根据倒数第二段“A typical day in Carlsbad in the 19th century went as follows. Visitors got up at 6:00 am to drink the waters and be serenaded by a band. Next, came a light breakfast, a bath in the waters, and then lunch. In the afternoon, visitors went sight-seeing, walked or attended concerts.(19世纪卡尔斯巴德典型的一天是这样的。游客们早上6点起床,喝着水,听着乐队的小夜曲。接下来是简单的早餐,在水里洗个澡,然后是午餐。下午,游客们去观光、散步或听音乐会)”可知,游客们一天的安排是按照时间顺序安排的,因此此处为下午过后,及晚饭时间的安排。选项D“After dinner, there were musical performances.(晚饭过后,会有音乐表演)”符合语义,故选D。

I wasn’t the most popular kid in my freshman year. I wasn’t into fashion, preferred reading to sports, had difficulty talking to boys. Therefore, the first year of high school hadn’t been kind to me. I had no close friends. I mostly kept to myself with my head buried in a book.
Ashley was very different from me. She was outspoken and fashionable. She was quite popular. These were qualities I knew nothing about. We had always been in the same classes throughout school, but had never talked much.
During summer school, we were both taking classes. The teacher paired us up on an assignment. We met at the library to work on the project and really got well. Of course, Ashley did most of the talking. When classes ended we continued to hang out.
I looked up to Ashley; she was all of the things I thought I wanted to be. I began listening to the music she listened to, wearing the clothes she wore. I quit reading and started watching the TV programs Ashley watched. I even tailored my sophomore (大二) year schedule to her interests. I decided to take art class even though I had really wanted to take theatre.
When we started school again, Ashley introduced me to her group of friends, the “cool girls.” She was the leader of their group. Finally I fit in. I followed them around, laughing when they told jokes, agreeing when they had opinions. I didn’t say much. I wouldn’t want them to think that I was being rude by disagreeing. This continued for several months.
One day, I overheard Ashley and her friends were talking about me.
“She’s such a loser,” one girl said to the group. “Ashley, she just follows you around trying to be you. She copies you; she doesn’t have a personality of her own.”
Then Ashley replied, “I know, I wish she would leave us alone. We were in summer school together and now she thinks we’re best friends or something.”
    注意:
    1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
    2. 应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
    3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
    4. 续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。
    Paragraph 1:
I stood rooted to the spot, feeling mortified (受辱的) and heartbroken.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
Hearing my mom’s advice, l decided I was going to stop crying and discover who I was.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
I stood rooted to the spot, feeling mortified (受辱的) and heartbroken. My hands were shaking, my face felt hot, and my eyes began to wet with uncontrollable tears. How had this happened? I thought we were friends. I didn’t know Ashley thought of me in that way. I couldn’t stay there and listen anymore. I ran home and told my mother what had happened. She just held me while I sobbed for hours. After I calmed down, she patted my head and said gently, “Just be yourself and people will like you for who you are.”
Hearing my mom’s advice, l decided I was going to stop crying and discover who I was. Ashley and I didn’t speak anymore after that. Over the next month, I went through a lot of changes. I rediscovered reading, and developed my own opinions. I never again just followed the crowd. I dropped art class and joined theatre. I began making new friends who liked me for who I was. The friends I made in theatre are still my great friends to this day. When I look back, I consider it a gift. What they said about me were true. If I hadn’t been given the chance to realize it, I might have been too concerned with “fitting in” to experience some of the best times of my life.
