Using money earned from her first part-time job, Sofi Cruz from Conway, South Carolina, brought one of her classmates to tears with a wonderful gift in the new school year. Sofi says her friend Jahiem“has always been that one student who does all of his work perfectly and never misses school, always helping teachers in class, and always being a happy human being.”
Jahiem had said that he needed new shoes and Sofi said she had been wanting to get him something special for a while. So one day, Sofi pulled her newly earned money together and bought a pair of shoes for her best classmate. She surprised Jahiem in class one day, approaching his desk slowly with a bag. “I’ve known you for a very long time since the third grade. And you are very special to me,”Sofi told Jahiem.
“You are a very good friend to me. And, since I got a job, I've been thinking about getting something special for somebody, and this is for you,” she said, handing him the bag. Jahiem opened the bag and found a shoebox with new shoes inside. She also gave him a pair of socks to go with his new shoes.
The unexpected act of kindness completely moved Jahiem. He began crying, resting his head on the shoebox in disbelief. Sofi walked around his desk and gave him a hug. Another classmate helped record the moment.
“Seeing him crying was very emotional,”Sofi wrote in a Facebook post that has since been shared 1,800 times.“I am so thankful to know that giving Jahiem those shoes made him so happy and allowed me to realize that giving someone something so special can be life-changing.”

Do you compare yourself to other people? Perhaps your best friend receives something you really want, or you’re not allowed to go to a concert but your brother or sister is. Even though comparisons are common and can sometimes be helpful, focusing (专注) on your own progress is important for your happiness.
“We often compare ourselves to others who are doing better or not as well as ourselves.” says Dr.Jack. “But I suggest comparing yourself to your past self and your future self. This can make you feel proud of what you’ve achieved and excited about what you might do. Focusing on your own purposes is more worthwhile than always trying to come out on top.”
Comparing yourself to those around you is natural and we often do it without realizing it. It can help us to be clear about our achievements and to form friendships with new people who have similar interests. However, it’s important to remember that nobody is perfect in real life. It’s also important to take note of how the comparison is making you feel. “If you begin to feel quite low, focus on your own strengths.”says Jack. In other words, you can ask yourself questions like “What can I do well in?”, which can help you trust yourself.
Maybe here you are wondering “What if all my friends are better than me?”. Dr. White says that jealousy (妒忌) is not bad but focusing on bettering your own work can help you feel just as successful. He also mentions that learning to celebrate your friends’ success can not only help to cheer your friends up but also help you feel good. It will encourage you to build each other up.
    28. What does the writer tell us in Paragraph 1?
A.We should compare with others. B.We should share things with brothers.
C.We should enjoy concerts with sisters. D.We should focus on our own progress.
    29. Why should you compare yourself to your past self?
A.To care about others. B.To change your purposes.
C.To increase your excitement. D.To be proud of your achievements.
    30. What does Dr.White suggest?
A.Trusting your friends. B.Cheering on tiny success.
    C.Celebrating others’ success. D.Forming a deep friendship.
    31. What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Plan Your Own Future B.Enjoy Your Own Happiness
C.Run Your Own Race D.Follow Your Own Dream
    D
A recent announcement in China limits teenager, to playing video games for up to one hour a day on weekends and holidays. To make sure the restriction(规定)is followed, video platforms will need real-name recognition and facial recognition.
As is reported, these measures have been welcomed by Chinese parents. The restrictions are aimed at the gaming companies, which have profited greatly at the cost of young people's health and growth.
A report compared video games to "spiritual opium"(精神鸦片)for China's youth. They are influencing teenagers' behavior in daily life, especially those who have not developed the proper time management skills. The way of restriction, may not be perfect, but it can send the right message to teenagers, as well as gaming companies who are using technology to drag users deeper and deeper into using their products.
The gaming companies should consider developing more learning games or serious games, instead of games that serve no particular purpose other than making money. There is much we can learn from the gaming world. Learning can be a game in a way to guide students toward success if we design education programs to lead students through levels, from easy to challenging. Students should be provided opportunities to fail in a safe environment and gain valuable experience for growth. And when they have mastered a skill, they can celebrate it to feel a deep sense of satisfaction.
Working in an education organization, I have noticed teachers who successfully use gaming in their courses. And I have also seen gaming companies working hard to produce valuable educational gaming tools or platforms. These tools help schools and teachers encourage students to achieve various learning goals.
Education in many parts of the world is filled with ills, including the luck of purpose and efficiency. Perhaps gaming can teach us something.
    32. What does the underlined word "They" in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. Video platforms. B. Gaming companies.
    C. Gaming restrictions. D. Video games.
    33. What is the author's attitude towards China's gaming restrictions?
    A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Supportive. D. Unconcerned.
    34. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
    A. Video games can be turned into teaching tools.
    B. All games harmful to teenagers should be forbidden.
    C. Teenagers should learn from online games.
    D. New technology is needed to help develop serious games.
    35. What is the author's aim in writing the text?
    A. To call on teenagers to give up playing online games.
    B. To put forward a new way of making good use of video games.
    C. To inform people of the newly announced gaining restrictions.
    D. To draw the public attention to the bad effects of video games.

    Believe in yourself.
A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don't keep your eyes on the floor. Raise your head and make eye contact (目光接触) with other people. 39 Introduce yourself. Tell them your name and where you're from.
    Remember people's names.
You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. 40 Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nickname (昵称). You'd be surprised at how often this
    might come in handy.
    A. Be friendly to others.
    B. Join in after-school activities you like.
    C. Making new friends can be hard, too.

She was very kind and would always be busy with her friends. She felt very happy that she had so many friends at school and in her neighborhood.
On Friendship Day, her class organized an event, in which everyone had to make three presents and give them to their best friends. Lily was really looking forward to the coming Friendship Day as she was expecting gifts from her friends. However, when all the presents were shared among her classmates, she was the only one who hadn’t received any presents. She felt terrible and cried a lot. She wondered how that was possible. She had made so much effort to be friends with everyone but in the end no one thought of her as one of their best friends.
Everyone came and tried to comfort her for a while but each one only stayed for a short time before leaving. This was exactly what Lily had done so many times to others.
On that day when she got home, her mother saw her sad face. And then her mother asked her the reason for her sadness. “Where can I find true friends?” Lily asked. Her mother was surprised at her question. Then she asked Lily what had happened in school. Her mother comfort her and said, “You cannot buy friends with a smile or a few good words. If you really want true friends, you will have to give them real time and love. For a true friend you must always be available, in good times and bad.”
