I started ut my career as an editr fr a travel magazine. I didn’t really mind the wrk, but I wanted smething mre challenging. My sister sent me sme details abut a cntent management psitin in a digital reading cmpany. The jb was a seemingly perfect mix f my skills and interests, s I jumped at it.
Hwever, sn after I jined the cmpany, its mdel changed t fcus n educatin, and everything abut my psitin changed. I was asked t take n the cmpletely different rles f selling the prducts t teachers and training peple. I had n experience in sales, training r educatin. On tp f that, I’m an intrvert(内向的人). I felt mre than a little utside my cmfrt zne.
I knew I wanted t grw as an individual and make a serius impact n the cmpany. I tld myself that everything feels verwhelming(令人不知所措的) at first and I shuld at least try. In a way, I felt like I didn’t have a chice. I knew jumping ut f the nest was the right thing fr me, even thugh it felt pretty awful.
I was frtunate t be surrunded by very helpful peple, bth at wrk and at hme. My best friend reminded me that I had taken huge leaps f faith in the past and tld me I wuld pull thrugh just fine. It als helped that my bss seemed t have mre cnfidence in my capabilities than I did. She never asked if I thught I culd d it; she nly asked if I was interested in trying.

Over time, I discvered that the jb was smething I culd d and liked ding. It was incredibly rewarding t see the cmpany grw and knw that I had smething t d with its success. Since 1964,clleges and universities in the U. S. have used Test f English as a Freign Language,r TOEFL,t measure an internatinal applicant's(申请人的)level f English. Universities in English-speaking Eurpean cuntries began using the Internatinal English Language Testing System,r IELTS,in 1989. In recent years,several cmpanies have develped new English language tests that are lw-cst and easy t use. And they aim t d mre than just ffer greater chices in the admissins prcess.
Funded in 2012, Duling creates sftware that teaches users many different languages, including English. In 2014, the cmpany launched its wn test f English language ability.
Jennifer Dewar wrks with Duling, helping t develp the test. She frmerly wrked as an admissins fficial at Washingtn University in St. Luis, Misuri. The schl is ne f hundreds f clleges, universities and ther rganizatins in and utside the U. S. that nw accept the test results fr internatinal admissins int their study prgrams.
Dewar says Duling created the test t lwer the barriers t higher educatin fr peple wrldwide, especially thse in develping cuntries.
TOEFL and the IELTS cst abut $ 300. They are given in a limited number f centers arund the wrld. Sme test-takers have t travel t take the tests, adding t the csts. Duling ffers its test entirely ver the Internet fr $ 49. All test-takers need is access t a cmputer with a micrphne,listening device and self-facing camera.
TOEFL,the IELTS and Duling measure a persn's English reading,listening,speaking and writing abilities. But it takes abut 45 minutes t cmplete a Duling test,cmpared t three r fur hurs fr TOEFL r the IELTS. Chinese A-level has vertaken(超过) German fr the first time, as it becmes the UK’s third mst ppular language.
This year 3,334 students take Chinese A-level, cmpared t 3,058 taking German. While entries(参加总人数) fr Chinese have increased by 8. 6 percent since last year, German entries have reduced by 16. 5 percent. French remains the mst ppular mdem language fllwed by Spanish, but bth have seen a fall 1 in entries cmpared t last year by eight and fur percent respectively.
Barnaby Lenn, chair f the Independent Schls Cuncil(ISC), said that althugh pupils used t be tld “It will really help yur career if yu learn German”, this is n lnger the case.
“In the 1960s, 70s and even the 80s, pupils were strngly encuraged t study German because f the imprtance f the German ecnmy. Althugh it is still strng, that argument has faded, and China has appeared in the last 25 years as the fastest grwing ecnmy in the wrld. ”
Mr Lenn, frmer headmaster f Harrw Schl, said the rise in Chinese A-level entries is partly driven by private schls, many f which have invested in the subject in recent years. “It is nt the case that a large number f state schls are nw teaching Chinese A-level. They are nt,” he said. Many f the entries will be Chinese native speakers and he added that independent schls have attracted “large numbers” f Chinese pupils in recent years.
Mark Herbert, directr f schls and skills at the British Cuncil, welcmed the rise in Chinese A-level entries. He said, “Our research shws that Mandarin will be ne f the mst imprtant languages fr the UK’s future and glbal standing - but we mustn’t neglect Spanish, French and German which will still be vital fr pst-Brexit(脱欧). ”
