I can’t miss the little old lady with her kerchief (方头巾) on her head, a black umbrella blowing all over. I can tell she is freezing. She is standing at a bus stop, and I’m driving by, late for my early morning shift. I decide to stop and offer her a ride.
Of course, she declines, but when I ask again and insist, finally, she gets in the car. I take her to her destination, and by the time she gets out of my car, she is smiling and thanks me.
I was late for work that day, but I was so glad that I stopped. That was 40 years ago, and the beginning of a new habit, one that continues when I’m out driving in bad weather.
If there’s someone at a bus stop, especially if it’s an elderly person waiting at off hours and in bad weather, I will pull over and ask whether they need a ride.
Once, a young doctor jumped in. She had finished a long shift and had been waiting and waiting at the bus stop. She had no hesitation and, for the first time, I was able to help someone who performs miracles (奇迹) on a daily basis. That felt good.
But the best part of my ride offers is the conversation. I do tend to ask a lot of questions: where are you from, where are you going, family, background, pets and whatever else comes to mind. Surprisingly, everyone wants to chat. We are usually laughing by the time the ride is over. “What a shame!” I often think when they hop out, as the stories were just getting started.
Now as retirement approaches, I believe I have found my calling. I will be happy to join a community driving program to take people to one appointment or another – or perhaps just to the coffee shop to sit and listen for an hour.
As the years pass, perhaps I will be the one standing at the bus stop. Perhaps there will be somebody who rolls down a window and offers me a seat for a little ride. I will continue to take that leap of faith in the kindness of strangers.
24. What are the first three paragraphs mainly about?
A. An old lady who impressed the author. B. The value of the author’s actions.
C. How the author started offering rides. D. An accident that happened 40 years ago.
25. What does the underlined phrase “pull over” mean in the text?
A. quit B. start C. cease D. stop
26. What does the author plan to do?
A. Continue driving people to their destinations. B. Become a taxi driver after retirement.
C. Wait to be offered a ride at a bus stop. D. Share her stories with more people.
27. What message does the author want to convey?
A. Elderly people need more care and support. B. Always believe in the goodness in people.
C. Offering rides to strangers involves risks. D. It is important to find a purpose in life.
C
Wheat is a main source of food for people across the planet, accounting for a fifth of the calories consumed globally. But as a result of climate change, scientists believe most parts of the world where the crop is grown will be hit by water shortages by the end of the century. And the US could be among the countries worst affected, the authors of the research published in the journal Science Advances told Newsweek.
If climate change isn't dealt with, by the year 2100, 60 percent of areas that grow wheat will be hit by water scarcity — up from the current level of 15 percent, according to the international team of scientists.
Co-authors Miroslav Trnka and Song Feng told Newsweek that in their previous research, they had shown climate change may cause soil to become less moist (湿润的) across most mainland US states, including those where wheat is grown. As a result, the US could be “one of the top most affected wheat producers” in terms of the increase in areas affected by severe droughts, they said in a joint statement.
Worryingly, existing research has predicted a 4.0 to 6.5 percent drop in global wheat production per 1 degree Celsius of warming if climate change isn't eased. And it's unlikely that wheat can be replaced if water becomes scarce, as it's not as thirsty as other crops and can do without water for a relatively long period of time.
“If multiple regions are affected by drought at the same time, it might be difficult to meet the demand even if the trade routes stay open and are not restricted by governmental measures,” warned Feng. However, he said, “Studies show that if we continuously improve the sustainability and technologies in the coming decades and allow for international trade, we may overcome the negative impacts of climate change.”
28.How will climate change hurt wheat production?
A.By lowering the temperature. B.By flooding the field.
C.By polluting the soil. D.By reducing the water supply.
29.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.Wheat production caused droughts in most mainland US states.
B.The United States is the biggest wheat producer in the world.
C.The United States will suffer a lot from climate change.
D.Climate change is closely watched by American scientists.
30.Why is wheat unlikely to be replaced by other crops in a drought?
A.It is the primary food for most countries. B.It is not influenced by global warming.
C.It needs less water than other crops. D.It is widely grown in most countries.
31.What's Feng's attitude towards the wheat production in the coming decades?
A.Objective. B.Negative.
C.Ambiguous. D.Unconcerned.

In a digital age, we almost never write things by hand. However, multiple studies have shown that this act has many benefits.
New brain research, led by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, confirms the same choosing handwriting over using a keyboard results in better learning and memory.
“When you write your shopping list or lecture notes by hand, you simply remember the content better afterwards,” said Audrey Van der Meer, author of the study.
The study was conducted using equipment to track and record brain wave activity. The participants included 12 young adults and 12 children. This is the first time that children have participated in such a study. Each subject was asked to write by hand and type on a keyboard while wearing a hood(风帽) with over 250 electrodes(电极). The sensors(传感器)in the electrodes are very sensitive and pick up the electrical activity that takes place in the brain. Each examination took 45 minutes per person.
The results showed that the brain in both young adults and children is much more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard. According to Van der Meer, plenty of senses are activated (激活) by pressing a pen on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These sense experiences build contact between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Van der Meer believes that the outcomes stress the importance of children being challenged to draw and write at an early age, especially at school. “Learning to write by hand is a bit slower process, but it’s important for children to go through the tiring phase of learning to write by hand”, she said.
The hand movements used to form the shapes of letters are beneficial in several ways. “If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand requires control of your fine motor(精细动作)skills and senses. It’s important to put the brain in a learning state as often as possible,” Van der Meer added. For example, you might use a keyboard to write an essay, but you should take notes by hand during a lecture.
32. What do we know about the study?
A. The study involved 45 participants altogether.
B. The participants were divided into two groups to conduct.
C. All the participants were gathered together for examinations.
D. The sensors in the electrodes were used to track brain wave activity.
33. Why does the brain become more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard according to Van der Meer?
A. More senses are made active when writing by hand.
B. Writing by hand is easier on the brain.
C. Noise made by typing doesn’t distract the brain when writing by hand.
D. The brain is more used to the skills required to write by hand.
34. How does Van der Meer think handwriting benefits people?
A. It increases people’s interest in learning. B. It helps people develop fine motor skills.
C. It allows children to become more patient. D. It allows people to write better essays.
35. What’s the main purpose of the text?
A. To report on new research on handwriting
B. To encourage the use of handwriting
C. To explain how handwriting affects adults and children differently
D.To advise children to start to write early

37 As you hike more frequently, you'll begin to develop additional patience, skills and comfort along the way. The beauty of hiking is that we can do it naturally and easily. Hiking is real. We all spend too much time on computers at home, writing under electric lights or watching TV indoors (often you're writing while watching TV). 39
Hiking is a great way to introduce kids to the world of the outdoors. 40 So let your kids hike together with you and have a good time.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
57-year-old Sean Currey knew the value of treating others in the way he intended to be treated. Hence, he lived by that principle in his whole life, which eventually took him off the streets at the right time.
Sean Currey became unemployed during the pandemic, and ended up homeless, searching through dustbins (垃圾桶) around San Rafael, California, to meet his needs. Once, he made an unusual find at the bottom of a dustbin just behind a coffee shop. Looking through the purse, he discovered a series of credit cards, debit cards, healthcare cards and a business card, identifying the purse’s owner as an 80-year-old woman, Evelyn Topper.
Interestingly, the woman lived in Mill Valley, about six miles away from his location. Knowing how discouraging it was to lose one’s possessions, Currey figured he needed to return the purse to its rightful owner. Then Sean Currey gave Topper a call, using the contact details on the business card. His guess was accurate, as the elderly woman had been extremely worried since losing her purse days ago.
According to Evelyn Topper, she stopped by a coffee shop on December 9 to get a hot drink and a bubble tea for her granddaughter. She paid for both drinks and put the purse into her pocket. Unfortunately, the purse fell off somewhere along the way, and by the time she reached home, she discovered her purse was gone.
Evelyn Topper contacted the coffee shop immediately, receiving the heartbreaking news that her purse was not there. Next, she checked her car, and all the rooms in her apartment, but did not find it. Eventually, she concluded the purse must have been dropped somewhere on the way home.
Just when she gave up finding her purse, Topper received Currey’s call. She screamed in delight when she learned he had her purse. They met up immediately in front of a nearby shopping center, where Currey returned the purse. The woman called her daughter and granddaughter, Mikayla Gounard, to tell them what had happened. That was when Mikayla decided to repay Currey’s kindness.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

It was Mikayla’s twelfth birthday. Determined to reward Currey’s kindness, Mikayla urged her invited relatives and friends to send donations instead of gifts. She decided to direct her kind gesture to the homeless man. As a result, Mikayla ended up raising $475 at her birthday party. As more people continued showing their willingness to help, Mikayla’s mom created a GoFundMe page for the man, gathering up to $30,000.

M: Yes, I had a very good time. It was hot here, so my parents and I went to Harbin together and stayed there for a whole week. It was nice and cool there.
W: Where did you stay in Harbin?
M: We stayed at my grandfather’s house. You know, Harbin’s my hometown.
W: Right. So, you didn’t spend much money on the trip.
M: Not much. We didn’t have to pay for our meals or a hotel.
W: I’m really happy that you enjoyed your summer holiday.

M: What are you doing, Lili?
W: I’m painting a pair of soccer shoes.
M: It looks interesting. Why did you begin to do that?
W: One day when I was watching my favorite football player Lionel Messi play in a game, I thought why not make a special pair of shoes for him? So I began to work.
M: Did Messi love the shoes?
W: Yes. The shoes had lovely details with black and white images of the soccer player and his family. I received a photo of him holding the shoes. I was very happy and decided to work on more shoes.
M: Have you sent any shoes to other famous football players?
W: Yes. My colorful designs drew attention from other players and they wanted my artworks.
M: So do you love doing that?
W: Sure. Football is something that I always like as well as art. I’m glad I found a way to connect the two things.

M: Nice to meet you, Jennifer. Can you tell us a few things about yourself? Perhaps your work experience.
W: I’m a university student in my final year, and I major in English. I’ve had several part-time jobs, including office work and sales.
M: What was your office work about?
W: I worked at the reception desk and did some paperwork.
M:What did you learn there?
W: I received phone calls and met customers most of the time. And I supported staff from different departments at times. So, I learned to deal with various kinds of people.
M: Did you apply any of the knowledge you got at university?
W: Yes, I think I did use some of the language knowledge.
M: What has been your worst experience at work?
W: Well, once I met a customer who came to make a complaint. I tried my best, but he was just being unreasonable. I had to refer him to my manager. It was a hard day.
M: Okay. Now, do you have any questions for us?
W: No, not at the moment.
M: Thank you, Jennifer. We have a number of people applying for this position, and we will call you with our decision within two weeks.
W: Okay, thank you.

W: Liz is excited. She is going to Asia with her mom. Neither of them had ever traveled outside of the United States before. They are going to fly to Hong Kong. After staying in Hong Kong for three nights, they will travel on their cruise ship to Shanghai and Beijing. “Beijing is an inland city, so we have to take about a two-hour bus ride to get there from the port. Anyway, we’re going to see the Great Wall, the Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. It’s going to be so cool!” Liz tells her neighbor Jane.
From China, the cruise ship will go to Pusan, and finally to Tokyo. From Tokyo, they will catch a flight back to Los Angeles.
“I hope your trip is more fun than mine,” says Jane. “I took a cruise to the Bahamas, but almost all the passengers got sick. I caught some kind of virus that made me throw up for almost three days. The captain of the cruise ship gave us a discount that we could use on a future trip. Ha! No more cruising for me.”
