Fireworks can add excitement to all kinds of celebrations. However, fireworks can be very dangerous if not handled or used properly. To reduce the risks associated with a firework display, adults need to be aware of firework safety rules, and so do children who are watching. There are some basic rules to follow.
Make sure you are using legal fireworks. There are reasons for the banning of certain fireworks, such as safety concerns. Explain to your children the dangers of fireworks and give them a written emergency number to call in case something goes wrong, along with the address of your firework display. Fill a bucket with water and have a fire extinguisher (灭火器) on hand.
Never allow your children to light the fireworks. This should be done only by a responsible adult. Move all children to a safe distance from the fireworks and have them remain there until the show is finished. Make sure the fireworks are setting off pointing to the sky and not to the side. To prevent injuries, it is important that the fireworks are never thrown or held in a person’s hands while being lit. Because fireworks are very loud, you may want to place earmuffs (耳罩) on young children.
When the firework display is finished, there will be a lot of debris (残骸) to pick up. If there are any fireworks that do not light properly, wait at least fifteen minutes before you get close. Place the faulty fireworks and the firework debris into a bucket of water. This will ensure that none of them will relight. Put all unused fireworks and lighters far out of the reach of children so they can’t try to light them. Remember that safety comes first!
4. What can we learn from the passage?

C. Place the unused fireworks in a bucket of water.

Girls should take part in competitive sport to build confidence, the leader of a group of girls’schools will argue this week. Helen Fraser, director of the Girls Day School Trust (GDST), will tell the group that sport can help girls cope with failure.
“All girls and not just the sporty ones should take physical exercise”, Ms Fraser will say. Research that girls are far less active than boys is worrying, she argues. Ms Fraser will tell the group that she backs “sport for all”. “That’s why I love it when our schools have A, B, C and D teams and beyond”, she will say.
The GDST draws on research from the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation which suggests only a quarter of girls in England meet basic levels(水平)of activity each week. One in five girls do no activity at all, twice the proportion (比例)of boys, the research suggests.
Ms Fraser says other research suggests that more than 80% of women business leaders played sports while growing up. She uses the examples of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, once a skater and tennis player, while the head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, was in the French national swimming team. Ms Fraser says Olympic medallists like Jessica Ennis, Katherine Grainger and Nicola Adams are excellent role models for young women but says women’s sport needs more money and more news reports.
Valerie Dunsford, head of Sheffield High School, part of GDST, said it was important to offer a large number of sports to attract different types of girls. “Not everyone wants to be out playing the hockey (曲棍球)”, said Ms Dunsford.
8. Which of the following ideas would Ms Fraser agree with?
A. Those taking part in the sport are always failures.
B. More should be done to make girls do sports.
C. Girls are less confident than boys.
D. Boys are born to be sport lovers.
9. What’s the proportion of boys who never take exercise?
A. 1/10. B. 1/4.
C. 1/5. D. 2/5.
10. Ms Fraser mentions those famous women to show ________
A. hard work will pay off.
B. it’s not easy to be great.
C. sport can help girls to succeed.
D. it’s necessary to balance work and sport.
11. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To explain the key to success.
B. To show the importance of sport.
C. To introduce more games to girls.
D. To encourage more girls to do sports.
B 9. A 10. C 11. D

D
The annual marathon in my town occurred as scheduled. My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance(救护车) in case any of them needed medical attention. As the athletes began to pace themselves, the front runners started to disappear. It was then that my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue running shorts and a baggy white T-shirt.
I knew we were already watching our “last runner”. Her feet turned in, yet her left knee was turned out. Her legs were so crippled and bent that it seemed impossible for her to walk, let alone run a marathon.
The driver and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forward. We would move forward a little bit, then stop and wait for him to gain some distance. Then we’ d slowly move forward a little bit more. As l watched her struggle to put one foot in front of the other, I found myself expecting her and urging her forward. I wanted her to stop, and at the same time, I hoped that she wouldn’t.
Finally she was the only runner left in sight. I sat on the edge of my seat and watched with respect and amazement as she pushed forward with strong determination through the last miles. When the finish line came into sight, the cheering crowds had long gone home. Yet she didn’t give up and crossed the line.
I don’t know this woman’s name, but that day she became a part of my life — a part I often depend on. For her, it wasn’t about beating the other runners or winning a prize. It was about finishing what she had set out to do. When I think things are too difficult or l get those “I-just-can’t-do-it,” I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.
12. What words can best describe the woman?
A. Hard-working and responsible. B. Proud and determined.
C Confident and brave. D. Strong-willed and honorable.
13. What does the underlined word “crippled” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Perfect. B. Flexible.
C. Disabled. D. Strong.
14. What has the author learnt from the woman?
A. Don’t depend on others when facing difficulties.
B. It’s not winning but holding on straight to the end that really matters.
C. Nothing is too hard to accomplish if one is brave enough.
D. The disabled can also run a marathon despite their walking difficulty.
15. What could be the best title for the text?
A. An injured Stranger. B. The Last Runner.
C An Unforgettable Job. D. The Annual Marathon.
D 13. C 14. B 15. B
根据第四段“I sat on the edge of my seat and watched with respect and amazement as she pushed forward with strong determination through the last miles. (我坐在座位边缘,满怀敬意和惊讶地看着她坚定地向前推进,走完了最后几英里)”可推测出作者对这位女士满怀敬意,而且她具有强大的意志去完成比赛,所以D选项“意志坚定的和可敬的”符合对该女性的描述。故答案为D。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第二段“Her feet turned in, yet her left knee was turned out. Her legs were so crippled and bent that it seemed impossible for her to walk, let alone run a marathon. (她的脚向内翻,但左膝却向外翻。她的腿残废而弯曲,连走路都不可能,更不用说跑马拉松了)”中关键提示“yet her left knee was turned out”和“bent that it seemed impossible for her to walk”可推测出划线部分crippled的含义贴合C选项“残疾的”。
根据尾段“For her, it wasn’t about beating the other runners or winning a prize. It was about finishing what she had set out to do. When I think things are too difficult or l get those “I-just-can’t-do-it,” I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel (争吵) with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help crying sadly when she thought of the angry words from her mother. After she walked aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt hungry but had no money. She stood in front of a shop which sold noodles for several minutes, but she had to leave. The seller of the noodle shop came out and noticed the young girl.
“Hey, girl, you want to have noodles?”
“Oh, yes, but I have no money on me,” she replied.
“Oh, that's nothing. I’ll treat you today,” the owner said, “come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly,
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, 'while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your thanks to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock. She remembered mother's familiar face and weathered hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted (感激的), but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”

Version 1
Paragraph 1:
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she knocked at the door, she found the door was locked and her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sat down in front of the house. “Where could my mother be?” she wondered. “Was she still angry with me?” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
Paragraph 2:
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. “Here you come! I've been looking for you,” she said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn't help throwing herself into her mother's arms. “Mum, I'm so sorry and thank you for what you have done for me.” She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled, patting her back gently.
Version 2
Paragraph 1
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. She felt a little nervous, but she opened the door at last. “Mom, mom.” She said weakly. However, nobody answered. She couldn't find her mother anywhere at home. She thought: “My mother bad left me!” At that time, she couldn't help crying. She thought of the things her mother did for her. For example, her mother cooked for her, looked after her, washed her clothes and so on. She regretted very much now.
Paragraph 2
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. “Oh! My baby, you had come back. I went out to find you. Are you crying? What happened?” Her mother said. She looked at the familiar face and smiled. She hugged her mother and said: “Mom, I’m so sorry. I should make an apology for my rudeness to you. I shouldn't quarrel with you. Mom, I love you. Thanks for all you did for me.” “I’m very happy that you can understand me. My dear, I love you forever.” Her mother said warmly. On that afternoon, she grew up.
