My dad worked in a coal mine as a young man. When he found a better-paid job in a factory in Pennsylvania, our family's lives changed for the better.

Because I was avid for reading in grade school, I read a lot and started writing short stories and articles. Gradually, some newspapers and magazines started buying them to publish. One day, one of my articles, The American Way, earned me a medal and an honorable mention from the Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge.

When the medal and a copy of a magazine containing the article arrived, I ran from the post office to show it to my family. My mother was extremely happy. As for Dad, he walked to the living room to watch TV.

I had just turned 18. This was the biggest event in my life, and my own father was acting as if it was nothing! That hurt, and I turned to my mother for comfort. “Have a seat,” she said. We talked for a long time and finally Mom told me, “Your father can't read, son.”

I felt sorry deeply, wondering how I could have been so selfish. I walked towards the yard where Dad was working on his car.“Dad, I'd like to read you something, if you don't mind. I noticed two male bluebirds. They appeared to be helping a female with a group of newly-born birds. I wanted to know if one of the males was an invader (入侵者). This is the fun of bird watching — you never know when you'll find something exciting and unusual.

Like 90% of the bird world, one male bluebird pairs with only one female, and together they raise a family. But sometimes a third adult shows up and helps the pair raise the young. Often it is a relative. The most likely reasons a lone bluebird becomes a “helper bird” are that it either has lost its mate (配偶) or failed to get one during the mating season.

Both the mated pair and the helper get some advantages when helping happens. Every time the helper brings food to the nest (巢), one of the parents is free to take care of its own needs for a few minutes. Helpers also protect the nest by driving away possible enemies. The helper's gain is less direct but equally valuable. He or she (helpers can be male or female) learns how to be a parent. Though raising babies is natural, skilled parents usually are more successful.

The Florida scrub jay is a kind of bird living in the U.S. state of Florida. Many pairs of Florida scrub jays “employ” one to six helpers. Usually the helpers are older children, and they do their job very well. Nests with helpers have 50% more young than nests without helpers (about half the jays don't use helpers). Helping in scrub jays seems related to a shortage of nesting habitats. Young jays must wait for older birds to die to get a nest. During the time, they help raise their younger brothers and sisters.

Morris Frank was a blind man who helped start the first school that trained seeing-eye dogs. His dog Buddy is considered to be the first seeing-eye dog in America.

This amazing story started in 1927, when Morris Frank was a 20-year-old student at Vanderbilt University and a man unhappy about dependency on others to get around. Frank's father read him an article by Dorothy Eustis, a woman living in Switzerland who had seen shepherds (牧羊人) training dogs to help blind people get around.

Frank immediately took a ship to Europe and trained hard with a dog that had been bred (培育) to lead a blind person. The training was hard. But after weeks with the dog, Frank could get around the nearby village with the help of Buddy.Morris Frank returned to America with a goal of spreading word about seeing-eye dogs. From the day he got off the ship, he was successful. At one point, in front of a group of reporters, Buddy led Frank safely across a busy New York street.

When Frank returned to Nashville, people were amazed at the sight of the blind man and his dog successfully walking on busy sidewalks (人行道). “Now strangers spoke freely to me,” Frank wrote years later. “In the old days, I often envied (嫉妒) two sighted people, who obviously did not know each other, their ease in starting a conversation. With Buddy there, however, it was the easiest and most natural thing in the world for them to say, ‘What a lovely dog you have!'”

About this time, Frank, Eustis and several others cofounded The Seeing Eye, an institution set up to train guide dogs for the blind. It operated in Nashville for two years
