Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the world’s most-loved composers, is famous for his nine symphonies (交响乐). Before he died in 1827, he began a new symphony, but never finished it. He only left behind some notes about the piece and a few “sketches” — short bits of written music.
In 2019, a special team of musicians, computer scientists, and historians was formed. Their goal was to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony to celebrate his 250th birthday. The team didn’t just want to complete the symphony, they wanted to come as close as possible to producing the symphony that Beethoven meant to write.
The team decided to use artificial intelligence (AI人工智能) to help finish the symphony. To train an AI, they turned every piece of Beethoven’s music to a form the computer could understand. By doing this, the AI could look for patterns (模式) in the way Beethoven wrote. They also studied Beethoven’s notes and sketches to work out where in the symphony he planned to use each little bit of music.
In an early test, the team took a few minutes of music created by the AI seed on Beethoven’s sketches, and played it for Beethoven experts, musicians and reporters. No one could tell which parts had been written by Beethoven and which parts were made up by the AI.
Finally, the AI had the challenge of trying to connect the little musical bits to a symphony. It took over two years, but the team was able to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony — not simply a melody (乐曲), but 40 minutes of music for a full orchestra (管弦乐队). On the night of October 9th, 2021, the piece was performed for the first time ever by the Beethoven Orchestra in Bonn, Germany.
So Beethoven now has a 10th Symphony. And though Beethoven didn’t write it all, the team feels sure that the music is very much like what he might be written, if he’d had the chance.

Game Ideas for Focus & Concentration (注意力) for Teenagers
Besides their studies, teenagers often take part in sports, after-school activities and social events. With so much to stay on top of, it’s easy for them to become stressed out and disorganized. They need help to improve focus and concentration through games. Here are some games that improve concentration, attention and memory.
    Brainteasers
Brainteasers give the teenage mind a workout. Brainteasers challenge players with simple-looking tasks, such as matching and recalling patterns. However, they test and improve focus by requiring the player to use speed and logic (逻辑). They also improve concentration, attention, reaction and other cognitive (认知的) skills when played often. Challenge teenagers to complete one or two brainteasers every night from an activity book or website. Riddles and puzzles also exercise cognitive abilities related to focus.
    Physical Challenges
Physical exercise is important for healthy teenage development in several ways. Not only does exercise keep the body fit and in shape, but it also helps strengthen the mind by supplying more oxygen (O2) to the brain, helping it process and recall information and awakening brain cells (细胞). Get teenagers outside so that they can develop social skills. Challenge teenagers to relay races, jump rope or hula-hooping competitions, volleyball or other games that encourage physical activity.
    Board Games
Board games such as chess and checkers aren’t the only games that improve concentration, focus and problem-solving skills. Even silly games for a group of players can improve cognitive abilities such as memory, concentration and focus. Laughter and lighthearted play during family game night stimulate (促进) areas of the brain related to creativity and learning while encouraging socialization that improves brain health.

    Grow Your Own Garden

Gardens come in all shapes and sizes. Starting a new one might seem difficult. But with a little planning and a few tips, you’ll grow your own garden easily.
Grow what you love in your own garden. This way, you’ll be sure to enjoy the process. You can grow vegetables. If you don’t like vegetables, you can grow fruits, flowers and succulents(多肉植物).
Once you decide what kind of garden you’d like to start, you’ll need to plan a few things before getting to work.
First, choose a location. Find a proper place that has good sunlight. Maybe you live in an apartment and don’t have a yard. That’s not a problem! You can start a garden in containers(容器) or most plastic bottles. You can even grow a garden in old rain boots.
Next, pick the right soil(土壤). This is important for a garden. An expert at a gardening store can advise you on the best soil for your garden.
After you have the correct soil, choose your plants. Will you start with seeds(种子) or seedling(幼苗)? Growing from seeds is often less expensive. And it’s more satisfying, because you get to watch the growth from seed to plant. But growing from seedlings is easier. There’s a better chance for your plant to grow big enough.
If you are wondering the best time to plant your own garden, plant right before the start of the growing season so that the plants can grow better.
If you’re a new gardener, start small. Because the larger the garden is, the greater the losses can be when things go wrong. Once you know how to plant a garden, you’ll be able to plant season after season and try to grow new things.
Soon your plants will produce fruits and vegetables. Share flowers with neighbors to brighten their day, or bring some vegetables to a family that’s going through a hard time. As I like to say, “Be a kind person!”

Science shows that there is a right way to build habits that last. Here are some tips to make exercise one of them.
    Start small
A goal of exercising for 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week may sound good. But how likely are you to follow through? The bigger your goal is, the more likely you are to fail and give up. It’s better to start with easy exercise goals you know you can achieve because you’ll build self-confidence when you meet them. Then you can move on to bigger goals.
    Use triggers
Triggers are simply reminders — activities, places, or objects — that kick of an automatic (自动的) reaction. They help you start exercising without thinking or making decisions. For example, the alarm clock goes off and you’re out of the door for your walk. You spot your sports shoes right by the bed and you’re up and running. Find ways to build triggers into your day to make exercise a no-brainer.
    Reward (奖励) yourself
People who often exercise tend to do so because of the rewards it brings to their lives, such as more energy, better sleep and a greater sense of happiness. However, these can be long-term rewards. When you’re starting an exercise program, it’s important to give yourself immediate rewards if you successfully complete a workout. Choose something you look forward to, but don’t allow yourself to do it until after exercise. It can be something as simple as having a hot bath or a favorite cup of coffee.
Choose exercise that makes you feel happy and confident
If your workout is unpleasant or makes you feel bad or unhappy, you’re unlikely to stick with it. Don’t choose exercise like running or lifting weights at the gym just because you think that’s what you should do. Instead, pick activities that fit your lifestyle, abilities and taste.

On winter nights, the wind usually blows strongly. Most of us stay inside our warm homes. Few of us think about the homeless. These people have no choice but to sleep on the streets. Some of them are so poor that they have no money to buy food.
A young man in Birmingham, England, made a decision to do something about this. Every night, he puts on a Spider-Man suit (套装) and gives food to the homeless he meets. He makes sure that these people won’t go hungry. The man refuses to make his name public.
The local people call him “the Birmingham Spider-Man”. The young man hopes his action will show others that everybody deserves (应得) a helping hand.
The 25-year-old man started his night activities in 2015. Every night at 9, he buys some sandwiches. Then, he finds a quiet place and puts on his suit. After that, the “Spider-Man” starts handing his food out to people in need.
The man said, “I wear the Spider-Man suit in order to get attention.” Without the suit, few people took a second look at him when he was handing out food. When people see the “Spider Man”, however, they come over and ask what he is doing.
“The Birmingham Spider Man” has already got lots of attention. Many people have offered to give away money to him. But the young man never accepts the money. Instead, he encourages people to go out and help people in need on their own. He said, “If more people offer a helping hand, the cold winter nights won’t be so cold any longer.”

Believe it or not, soaps change lives in Cambodia. A group named Eco-Soap Bank collects used soap from hotels and turns it into new bars(块) to give out for free.
Samir Lakhani, an American student, started this project eight years ago. In 2014, he visited Cambodia for the first time, which is in Southeast Asia. There he watched a mother bathe her baby using detergent(洗涤剂).
He learned that many people in Cambodia are very poor and don’t have soap. He wanted to help solve the problem.
Samir’s idea was to recycle old soap. Each year, millions of tourists visit Cambodia. Many hotels use large amounts of soap. A hotel can produce about 68 kilograms of soap waste every month. So Samir went from hotel to hotel, asking them for used soap.
His project grew. It later became the Eco-Soap Bank. The group takes used soap to recycling places. There, the soap is cleaned, then cut up, mixed together and put through a press. Soap waste becomes new bars or liquid(液体)soap. Then they are given out to local schools and some charities(慈善事业). Eco-Soap Bank gives soap to Cambodians. Some bars are also given to local women to sell. They make money for their families. The project has helped half a million Cambodians get cleaner. But Lakhani has a bigger plan. He wants to start Eco-Soap Bank in every tourist area around the world. Because he wants to help people take their health into their own hands—one bar of soap at a time.
Nowadays Eco-Soap Bank operates in 12 countries and has recycled 700 tons of soap into over 9 million bars. The women who participate in Eco-Soap Bank programs receive free education and job training support to enable them to succeed. Samir received a CNN Heroes Award for Eco-Soap Bank in 2017 and a Unilever Young Entrepreneurs Award in 2018. He also recently gave a TEDx Talk. He said he hoped everyone in the world could be healthy from the little bars.

Today, our currency (货币) is a mixture of metal coins and paper money, but it wasn’t always that way. Before metal coins and paper bills existed (存在), people used a lot of unusual things to buy what they needed. In one part of the world, for example, people used the sharks’ teeth for money, while in another place, rare seashells were money.
There are many fantastic facts about the history of money. Bright feathers were the lightest money used by people on a Pacific island. Stones were the heaviest money and some weighed over 500 pounds. Greece used a lot of metal coins which were smaller than apple seeds. They were the smallest money ever used.
No one knows for sure when people started using metal coins for money. Scientists have found coins dating from 600 BC, so we know they have been around for a long time. At first people used the precious metals, such as gold and silver to make coins. In the 1200s, people in China used iron (铁) coins for their currency. These coins weren’t worth very much, so people had to use a lot of them to make their purchases (购买物). Because iron coins were inconvenient, the government started printing paper bills. People took these bills to banks and traded them in for coins. This is the first example we have of paper money.
Today, most countries use a mixture of coins and paper bills for their currency. In some countries, the paper bills are all the same size and color. In many others, the bills come in various sizes and colors. This makes it easier for people to tell the value of their money.
In 2002, twelve European countries started using a completely new currency. It’s called the euro. Many Europeans miss their old currencies, but now it is easier to move money from one country to another.

(2022·北京昌平·九年级期末)The actor Christopher Reeve is best known as the star of four Superman movies. However, something terrible happened to him on May 27, 1995. His head landed first and badly hurt when he was thrown from his horse in an accident.
Reeve’s life was saved by doctors, but the fighting against his hard life was just beginning, as the actor would never be able to feel anything below his neck, breathe without help from a machine or do any physical activity on his own again.
During this time, Reeve felt like he had lost all hope. He wished that he was dead and even thought of ending his own life. It was only because of the support of his wife, family and friends that he found the hope and courage to live again.
Reeve put his heart into learning everything he could about his injuries. He took lots of exercises. Reeve never met his goal of getting back on his feet, but he made great progress. Shortly after, he managed to return to his film work by directing, producing and even starring in films. He also wrote a book about his experience and returned to his charity work. Reeve became an energetic supporter for people with back injuries and disabilities, raising millions of dollars in support of medical research. “What I do is based on powers we all have inside us and you don’t have to be a ‘superman’ to do it.” His attitude encouraged many people who were stuck in illness. “With the progress of new medical research, I’m confident that people like me would be able to walk again one day. So you can see. I’m too busy with living to think of giving up!”
His ten-year-long fighting came to an end on October 10, 2004, at the age of 52. His active performance for the disabled proved more superhuman than anything that could be dreamed up for the big screen.

    Global Warming
Satter lives in Bonnotola (BT) in southwestern Bangladesh (孟加拉国) . The small seaside village was once home to 2,000 people. Most of them were farmers, like Satter. But rising seas poisoned (毒化) the soil with salt water. Two major storms in the last two years destroyed the mud barriers (土坝) that protected the village from the sea. Today, only 480 people remain.
“The effects of global warming are destroying parts of Bangladesh,” said Mohammad who is the head of the research center PRD.
Salt in soil has increased by 26 percent over the past 35 years. In 1973, 833,000 hectares of land were poisoned by sea water. Areas of fresh water were also poisoned. This grew to 1.02 million hectares in 2000, and 1.056 million hectares in 2009, reports Bangladesh’s SRDI.
At BT village, the women walk up to 4 kilometers to a well to collect water for cooking and drinking every day. Wells in the area only have fresh water in the months after yearly heavy rains. In the summer, fresh water is difficult to find, said one of the women, Halder.
The villages lie in Bangladesh’s southwestern Shyamnagar area. The area is home to 400,000 people. Officials say the government does not have the money to build desalination factories. “The area needs maybe 500 desalination factories. But we’ve only got 50,” said Alamgir head of a local organization.
The United Nations made a report that warned global warming would get worse in the coming years even if humans immediately stopped producing carbon gas.
After the UN report, the question remains: Will world leaders choose to protect the environment?
No matter what the world leaders do, there are a lot of ways individual (个体) people can make choices to protect the environment. People can change what they eat or travel without getting on an airplane, for example.
Benjamin Clarysse is a bio-engineer who works with a number of environmental groups in northern Belgium. He warns, political leaders still need to promise changes. They cannot just depend on citizens doing their part. “They cannot just say that everyone should just do a little bit of the work,” Clarysse said. “Depending on just the goodwill of people won’t get you there.”

In ancient times, people depended on stars to guide them on a clear night. Today, we have navigational systems (导航系统) to help us find our way. The recent one is the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS).
The Chinese engineers built the BDS independently. With the launch of the last satellite from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center on June 23, 2021, the global (全球的) network of 59 satellites has been completed. On July 31 of the same year, Beidou started providing services to the world. It’s difficult to imagine.

    BDS
When you unlock one of Hellobike’s bicycles, you are using the BDS. Users can also find shared bikes more easily thanks to Beidou’s positioning service.
However, the BDS doesn’t just work one way. As the country’s largest space-based system and one of four global navigation networks, Beidou has a two-way communication system, including its ability to receive messages sent by people from areas with poor communication signals. Obviously, it isn’t designed for users to chat online. Instead, it plays a role when disasters happen and communications are blocked.
After the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, all ground-based communication facilities (设施) were interrupted. Though the first generation of Beidou could only send 120 characters in a single message at that time, communication between affected areas and rescue centers was successful. Now, Beidou can send 1,200 Chinese characters in a single message.
As Sun Jiadong, former chief designer of the BDS said, “The application( 应用) of Beidou is only limited by imagination.”

Have you ever heard of netball? It is a team sport which is similar to both basketball and handball.
Netball was first played in England in 1895 at Madame Ostenburg’s College. In the first half of the 20th century, Netball’s popularity continued to grow, with the game being played in many countries, it is particularly popular in Australia and New Zealand. In 1995 Netball became a “recognized” sport of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and one of the International Netball Federation’s goals is to encourage the IOC to include netball in the Olympic Games Programme in the future.
There are seven players on each team and they each wear a bib (号码布) which shows the name of the position they play. Players must throw the ball to one another and the aim of the game is to pass the ball to the “Goal Shooter” or “Goal Attack” who can shoot the ball into the net to score a goal. However, the key rules of netball are that you cannot bounce (拍) the ball and you cannot move your feet when you have the ball. This is called the footwork rule and it can be quite difficult to grasp (掌握) for young children playing the game! A full match lasts for one hour and in a single match often about 100 goals are scored which shows what a fast-paced and exciting game netball is!
Netball is typically played by women and girls. However, at many universities, there are mixed netball leagues (联赛) in which teams must have both male and female players.
In the UK, there are many different ways to try to attract women to play netball. One such plan is called “Back to Netball” which encourages women who have not played netball since they were at school to rediscover their love for the sport and get back on the court! Walking Netball is another variation (变化形式) of the sport aimed at older women and those who want to exercise in a gentler way. So, why not watch a video of netball online and then have a go for yourself?
