Max Mathews has been called the father f cmputer music. He created electrnic tls s that peple culd use cmputers as musical instruments. He had a great influence n the develpment f electrnic music and hw it is written, recrded and played.
In 1957, Mathews wrte the first cmputer prgram that enabled a cmputer t create sund. At that time, he was wrking as an engineer at Bell Labratries in New Jersey. His cmputer prgram enabled a large IBM cmputer t play a 17 secnds piece f music that he had written. The cmputer was s slw that it wuld have taken an hur t play the piece f music in 17 secnds. Fr that reasn, Mathews mved the wrk t a tape player, which culd be sped up t play the music at a nrmal speed. He later said that the sund quality f the musical ntes was nt great, but the technical imprtance f the music was huge.
Mathews cntinued creating ther versins f the music prgram. He became interested in hw cmputers culd help musicians utside recrding studis. The Grve prgram he develped was the first cmputer prgram made fr live perfrmances.
He als develped an electrnic device he called the Radi Batn. The device lks like tw drum sticks. It enables the user t cntrl the speed and sund levels f rchestral music playing n a cmputer. The user des this by mving the tw sticks n a special electrnic surface.
Mathews believed mdern musicians are nt making full use f the pwer f cmputer music. He said a vilin always sunds like a vilin. But with a cmputer, the way a vilin sunds is unlimited. He said he didn’t want cmputer sunds t replace live music. But he said he hped laptp cmputers wuld ne day be cnsidered serius instruments.

If yu’ve t make a decisin n Friday, wait until Friday. Squash (压制) unnecessary wrry with ne questin. If the answer is “n”, stay in the present mment, write the thught quickly and then let it g.
Dn’t let pssessins pssess yu. Dn’t let bjects rule yu. Dn’t give them the pwer t spil yur day. Wrrying ver a prblem after the fact can’t restre r bring anything back. The less yu have, the less anxiety yu bring int yur life.
Set wrry limits. If yu can’t get wrry under cntrl right away, then establish limits. Set a timer r a watch alarm fr 15 minutes. When the time is up, the alarm will be a tangible (切实的) reminder t let the wrry g. Schedule this time when yu’ve smething imprtant t d, s yu’ll have t drp wrry and refcus fast. Wrrying is a chice, and yu can chse nt t d it.
Dn’t cntrl thers with yur wrries. Wrrying abut lved nes wastes lts f time and pens up the dr t permanent estrangement (疏远). Let peple be wh they are. Stp frcing thers t d what will make yu feel better, instead f what they want. Dn’t manipulate (操纵) them int eating what yu want them t eat, ging where yu want them t g, r ding what yu want them t d under the guise (伪装) f lve. Give peple credit fr having half a brain and knwing what’s gd r bad fr them. Yu’ll cut yur wrrying in half.

Tday’s artificial intelligence may nt be that clever, but it just gt much quicker in understanding. A learning prgram designed by three researchers can nw recgnize and draw handwritten characters after seeing them nly a few times, just as a human can. And the prgram can d it s well that peple can’t tell the difference.
The findings, published in the jurnal Science, represent a majr step frward in develping mre pwerful cmputer prgrams that learn in the ways that humans d.
Althugh cmputers are excellent at string and prcessing data, they’re less-than-stellar students. Yur average 3-year-lds culd pick up basic cncepts faster than the mst advanced prgram.
In shrt, “Yu can generalize,” said cauthr Jshua Tenenbaum. But there’s smething else humans can d with just a little expsure — they can break an bject dwn int its key parts and dream up smething new. “T scientists like me wh study the mind, the gap between machine-learning and human-learning capacities remains vast,” Tenenbaum said. “We want t clse that gap, and that’s ur lng-term gal.”
Nw, Tenenbaum and his clleagues have managed t build a different kind f machine learning algrithm (算法) — ne that, like humans, can learn a simple cncept frm very few examples and can even apply it in new ways. The researchers tested the mdel n human handwriting, which can vary sharply frm persn t persn, even when each prduces the exact same character.
The scientists built an algrithm with an apprach called Bayesian Prgram Learning, r BPL, a prbability-based prgram. This algrithm is actually able t build cncepts as it ges.
In a set f experiments, the scientists tested the prgram using many examples f 1,623 handwritten characters frm 50 different writing systems frm arund the wrld. In a ne-sht classificatin challenge, peple were quite gd at it, with an average errr rate f 4.5 percent. But BPL, slightly edged them ut, with a cmparable errr rate f 3.3 percent. The scientists als challenged the prgram and sme human participants t draw new versins f varius characters they presented. They then had human judges determine which nes were made by man and which were made by machine. As it turned ut, the humans were barely as gd as chance at figuring ut which set f characters was machine-prduced and which was created by humans.
The findings culd be used t imprve a variety f technlgies in the near term, including fr ther symbl-based systems such as gestures, dance mves and spken and signed language. But the research culd als shed fresh light n hw learning happens in yung humans, the scientists pinted ut.
12. What is the passage mainly abut?
A. An advance in artificial intelligence.B. A special learning prgram fr students.
C. The applicatin f artificial intelligence.D. A new apprach f develping prgrams.
13. By “less-than-stellar students” in Paragraph 3, the authr means _______.
A. students are better at prcessing dataB. cmputers are incmparable t students
C. students are less smart than cmputersD. cmputers are less clever in sme aspects
14. In the experiments testing BPL, what did the scientists find ut?
A. Humans were slw at recgnizing characters.
B. BPL wrte characters in a quite different manner.
C. BPL culd identify and write characters as humans.
D. Humans culd create mre characters than cmputers.
15. What can be inferred frm the passage?
A. Cmputers learn in the same way as humans.
B. The findings may help imprve human-learning.
C. Machine-learning is superir t human-learning.
D. Yung humans can understand algrithms quickly.

根据倒数第二段中的“In a ne-sht classificatin challenge, peple were quite gd at it, with an average errr rate f 4.5 percent. But BPL, slightly edged them ut, with a cmparable errr rate f 3.3 percent.”
根据最后一段中的“But the research culd als shed fresh light n hw learning happens in yung humans, the scientists pinted ut.”

如:be presented with, blw away, cme back t等高级词汇;In an instant, everyne in the rm was presented with flwers, including the waiter and the pian player. All this was due t a yung American sailr, wh, thrugh his kindness and genersity, brightened ur paths.
