Leaf peeping, the practice f traveling t watch nature display the fall clrs, is a belved annual activity, especially in New England. Typically, by the end f September, leaves take n warmer clrs thrughut the U.S. But this year, many areas haven’t even shaken ff the green shades f summer. In Maine, frest rangers reprted less than 70% clr change and mdest leaf drp.
It’s cmmnly believed that trees, like peple, must prepare fr winter. When fall arrives, and day length and temperature drp, trees respnd by ending green substance prductin and absrbing remaining nutrients, causing leaves t lse the riginal clr. Greens give way t yellws, reds and ranges that make fr dramatic autumn displays.
Warm fall temperatures can make the fall clrs appear later. Wrse, dry summers can cause leaves t miss the fall clr turn altgether. Delay f the start f the fall clrs, which has been mving later int the fall, culd cntinue. “My bservatins in the last decade have had mre years that were later than what we cnsider histrical averages. It can be a trend as the planet warms,” said the expert Jim Salge.
It’s nt just the plants that suffer. “Turning leaves ffer an irresistible mass f clr — which, by estimate, brings in as much as billins f dllars a year in turism in New England,” said Andy Fintn, a frest eclgist. That’s anther gd reasn t fcus n preserving frests. Leaf peeping can stay part f the area’s feature if frests are given enugh prtectin. “If we can keep them unharmed, they’ll prvide things we’ve depended n, as well as fall inspiratin,” said Fintn.

    A. They take n warm clrs.B. They drp earlier than nrmal.
    C. They stay green lnger.D. They ttally miss the fall clr turn.

    C. Functins f the green substance.D. Effect f climate change n fall leaves.

Over the last decades, we have witnessed an ever-increasing use f electrnic devices, leading in turn t electrnic waste (e-waste) becming the wrld’s fastest grwing waste stream. In 2019, a ttal f 53.6 Mt f e-waste was generated glbally, nly 17 percent f which is dcumented as having been managed in an envirnmentally sund manner, which has been pushing researchers t address the e-waste prblem.
Nw researchers at the Cellulse & Wd Materials Labratry have crafted a water-activated dispsable (一次性的) battery made f paper and ther envirnmentally friendly materials.
The new paper battery has the same key cmpnents as traditinal standard batteries. Like a traditinal chemical battery, it has a psitively charged side called a cathde, a negatively charged side called an ande and a cnductive material called an electrlyte between the tw. Instead, in the new battery, the ande and cathde are inks printed nt the frnt and back f a piece f paper. That paper is filled with salt. It will disslve when yu add just a cuple f drps f water t the paper. The resulting saltwater slutin acts as the electrlyte, which allws electrns t flw. Abut 20 secnds later, the battery will prduce a stable 1.2 vlts f electricity until the paper dries ut. (Fr cmparisn, a standard AA battery prvides 1.5 vlts.)
The researchers demnstrated that their battery culd present a sustainable alternative t the mre harmful batteries that are cmmn in lw-pwer devices, such as an alarm clck. Nyström, head f the research, even pictures a bright future where these batteries are applied t diagnstic tests in hspitals and envirnmental sensrs, ideally with ther sustainable cmpnents such as screens and packaging. “That future may nt be s far ff.” Nyström said hpefully.
It is hard t predict a time line fr prducing such items n a large scale, but Nyström says he is in cntact with ptential industry partners and believes these batteries culd make their way int prducts within the next tw t five years.
    12. What can we learn frm paragraph 1?
    A. Electrnic devices are verly used.
    B. Electrnic devices are the main surce f waste.
    C. Electrnic waste has becme a glbal prblem.
    D. Electrnic waste is mstly managed in a sund way.
    13. What des the underlined wrd “It” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. The salt.B. The paper.C. The battery.D. The ink.
    14. What d we knw abut the new paper battery?
    A. It has cme int the market.
    B. It can pwer cmmn electrical equipment.
    C. It has the same ande and cathde as the traditinal battery.
    D. It stps prducing electricity when the saltwater slutin dries ut.
    15. Hw des Nyström feel abut the future f the paper battery?
    A. Indifferent.B. Psitive.
    C. Negative.D. Dubtful.
