A
When I set down a cup of soup in front of one of “The Party”, she glanced down at it, and then frowned. “Hannah, I asked for a half cup of soup,” she said, sounding angrily, “You are always so slow. I don’t know how you always mess up our orders.”
I politely mumbled an apology. It was only a cup of soup, and an honest mistake, but I felt like such a disaster.
The residents at the high-end senior living community, where I served as a waitress in the cafeteria, expected nothing less than a five-star dining experience and my small mistake was not to be tolerated.
When I first started working there, I was already shy and couldn’t stand the idea that someone didn’t like me. Early on, when residents would scold or criticize me with or without reasons, I felt like crawling under a rock.
The most difficult guests by far were a group of six women who the servers nicknamed “The Party.” At first, they seemed friendly. But the truth is that they were rude and demanding. I would leave the dining room exhausted almost every night after serving them.
Somehow those rough nights started to change me to become more outgoing and self-assured. The residents gradually depend on me and my “convinced” smile. I used to have trouble speaking in front of a group and would be shy when I did. Now, I have no problem walking up to a table of fourteen people and making conversation as if I had known them my whole life.
I give credit to “The Party” for putting me in a situation where I had no choice but to smile and carry on. Today, when I see “The Party”, I still flinch a little inside, but then I pull back my shoulders, lift my chin and march up to them ask, “What’s it going to be today, ladies?”
21. What do we know about the residents?
A. They are very picky about services.
B. They all enjoy having meals in groups.
C. They all behave nicely and reasonably.
D. They all find favors in the eyes of the servers.
22. Which is the quality the author possesses now?
A. Shyness. B. Confidence.
C. Selfishness. D. Indifference.
23. What does the underline word “flinch” mean?
A. take in. B. beat up.
C. cheer up. D. draw back.
24. What moral lesson can we take from this story?
A. Where there is a will, there is a way.
B. Practice makes perfect.
C. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
D. With great power comes great responsibility.
B
On September 29, 2021, the US Fish and Wildlife Service declared it would be removing 23 species from its Endangered Species Act, including the ivory-billed woodpecker, various Hawaiian birds and freshwater fish, not because they had pulled back from the edge of extinction, but because the USFWS believed these species would never recover, and were most likely extinct, therefore not requiring protection.
In April, 195 countries are getting together in China for a UN conference to discuss global agreements to protect nature and biodiversity, with the hope of finalizing an agreement to safeguard plants, animals, and ecosystems. However, the new strain(毒株)of Covid-19, Omicron, has potentially thrown the plans into a mess, and negotiators may switch to online talks if travel restrictions to China are put in place again.
“We can't go another four months without any progress” said Georgina Chandler, senior international policy officer at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Conservationists are urging the talks to go ahead—online if necessary—as the biodiversity crisis shows no sign of slowing up.
“Nature loss has not gone away and threatens both human lives and the global economy,” said Lin Li, director of global policy at the organization. “With one million species currently in danger of extinction, delaying action is not an option.”
Improving conservation and management of natural areas, such as oceans, forests, and wildernesses is crucial to safeguarding the ecosystems on which humans depend. However, forests are still being devastated, often for farming or commercial use. As trees absorb about a third of planet-warming emissions produced worldwide, stopping deforestation is key. At COP26 in Glasgow last November, world leaders plan to invest $19 billion in public and private funds to protect and restore global forests.
It’s easy to feel disheartened by the disappointing news, but the only way to stop more species suffering the same fate is to pay attention and take actions.
25. Why would the 23 species be removed from the Act?
A. Because they are less endangered.
B. Because they have already died out.
C. Because more fund is in need to protect them.
D. Because nothing can save them from extinction.
26. What do Georgina Chandler and Lin Li urge to do?
A. Take immediate actions.
B. Put off the conference.
C. Have online talks.
D. Improve global economy.
27. What does the author intend to do by writing the text?
A. To explain why some species have disappeared.
B. To recommend ways to protect and restore forests.
C. To describe the present situation of global ecosystem.
D. To call for attention and action against biodiversity crisis.
C
Contrary to “popular opinion”, the scientific pursuit for knowledge is not a predictable process. To make new discoveries, researchers need the freedom to be creative, fail, and learn by chance. This aspect is similar to art. This is why Wageningen scientists look to artists for inspiration and exchange ideas about how to increase creative freedom.
“Science and art are two different ways to make something understandable. They both provide a perspective on reality,” says Biochemistry Professor Dolf Weijers. “From the outside, the research process looks very formal and the artistic process looks somewhat messy. But the scientific process can also unfold in an unpredictable way.”
“Scientists can learn a lot from artists,” says Weijers. “Association and creativity are central to art. Those aspects require more attention in science as the creative process is the key of science.”
“As a scientist, you use different methods, but it is equally about how you visualize(可视化) your understanding of reality and the connections that there are. This is sometimes just as visual as art,” says Weijers. One example is a recent special project in which Weijers and his colleague Joris Sprakel, professor of Physical Chemistry and Soft Matter, measured the forces that act on plant cells. A molecular(分子的)sensor was used to visualize the different forces. They showed the results in colorful images, each representing a different force.
What science and art also have in common is that they are topics of discussion in society. There are people who say that they do not value art and people who mistrust science. Weijers says, “It often creates the wrong impression because only the results of scientific studies are presented, and people do not have any insight into the process leading to discovery. As a scientist, you are doubted if you say that something is different a few years later. Then you are viewed as unreliable. But what is often poorly understood is that there are no final results in science. What we scientists can achieve in the coming period is to provide more chances for people to focus on the process. Personally, I think that the connection with art can help to lead the focus on the process than the result.”
28. What might be the “popular opinion” about the scientific discovery?
A. It is creative. B. It can be accidental.
C. It allows failures. D. It is predictable.
29. Why does the author mention Dolf Weijers’s research on plant cells?
A. To prove that science can be visualized like art.
B. To stress that understanding science is difficult.
C. To show the value of his scientific achievements.
D. To tell obvious differences between science and art.
30. What does Dolf Weijers say about scientific studies?
A. They have little to do with the discoveries.
B. Their process should be more open to people.
C. They always present unchanged final results.
D. Their focus is not the process but the result.

There was something in the elderly woman’s grace that caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of her steps, the woman moved with deliberation (从容), and there was no hesitation in her gestures.
It was a few years ago, and I had taken a part-time holiday-season job in a video store at the local shopping mall. From inside the store, I could see the people outside rushing by.
The elderly woman entered the store, along with her daughter, who was displaying a serious case of impatience, rolling her eyes, sighing and checking her watch every few seconds. I guessed if she had possessed a rope, she would have fastened it to her mother to drag her along to keep step with the rush of other shoppers.
The elderly woman separated from her daughter and began to seek through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title written on an old piece of paper.
Rather than rush off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Looking back, I thought I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment.
Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who’d passed away the previous Christmas. I missed my mom and still felt regretful about the moments when I’d used my impatience to make her life unhappy.
As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced its floor plan: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.
We found the DVD and she thanked me, saying that it was the one she’d enjoyed when she was her daughter’s age. Unwillingly, I accompanied her to the cash register, realizing I had to return the elderly woman to her daughter, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

1-5 ACBAB 6-10 ABBCC 11-15BACAC 16-20 ABCAA
21-24 A B D C
由第三段“The residents at the high-end senior living community, where I served as a waitress in the cafeteria, expected nothing less than a five-star dining experience and my small mistake was not to be tolerated.”(我在高端老年社区的咖啡厅担任服务员,住在这里的住户期待不亚于五星级的用餐体验,不能容忍我的一丁点小错误)可知,这里的住户非常挑剔。故选A项。
由第六段“Somehow those rough nights started to change me to become more outgoing and self-assured. The residents gradually depend on me and my “convinced” smile.
根据划线词下文but then I pull back my shoulders, lift my chin and march up to them ask, “What’s it going to be today, ladies?”(但是之后我腰背挺直,抬起下巴,到她们跟前问道,“女士们,今天怎么样,喝点什么?”)
由第四段“ Early on, when residents would scold or criticize me with or without reasons, I felt like crawling under a rock.”(早些时候,当住户责备或者批评我时,无论是有理由还是没有源由,我都想要钻到石头底下)第五段“But the truth is that they were rude and demanding. I would leave the dining room exhausted almost every night after serving them.”(但是事实是她们非常粗鲁和苛刻。几乎每个晚上服务完她们之后,离开餐厅时我都是身心俱疲)和第六段“Now, I have no problem walking up to a table of fourteen people and making conversation as if I had known them my whole life.”(现在,我能轻易地走到坐了14人的餐桌旁,和客人聊天,好像我跟她们非常熟)可知,作者作为一名餐厅服务员,在面对苛求的顾客时,艰难的从害羞,退缩,胆小到现在蜕变成了一个强大,冷静,喜怒不形于色的人。
B 篇 25-27 D A D
根据第一段“not because they had pulled back from the edge of extinction, but because the USFWS believed these species would never recover, and were most likely extinct, therefore not requiring protection.(不是因为它们从灭绝的边缘拉了回来,而是因为USFWS认为这些物种永远不会恢复,而且很可能已经灭绝,因此不需要保护。)”
根据第三段““We can't go another four months without any progress” said Georgina Chandler, senior international policy officer at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.(英国皇家鸟类保护协会高级国际政策官员Georgina Chandler说:“我们不能再继续4个月没有任何进展。”)”以及第四段Lin Li所说的““With one million species currently in danger of extinction, delaying action is not an option.”(“目前有100万个物种濒临灭绝,拖延行动是不可能的。”)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“It’s easy to feel disheartened by the disappointing news, but the only way to stop more species suffering the same fate is to pay attention and take actions.(令人失望的消息很容易让人感到沮丧,但阻止更多物种遭受同样命运的唯一方法是关注并采取行动。)”
C 篇 28-30 D A B
根据第一段中的“Contrary to “popular opinion”, the scientific pursuit for knowledge is not a predictable process(与“流行的观点”相反,对知识的科学追求不是一个可预测的过程)”可知,流行的观点认为科学发现是可预测的。
根据第四段中的““As a scientist, you use different methods, but it is equally about how you visualize(可视化) your understanding of reality and the connections that there are. This is sometimes just as visual as art,” says Weijers. One example is a recent special project…measured the forces that act on plant cells. A molecular sensor was used to visualize the different forces. They showed the results in colorful images, each representing a different force(“作为一名科学家,你使用不同的方法,但它同样是关于你如何将你对现实的理解和其中的联系形象化。 故选A。
根据最后一段中的“Weijers says, “It often creates the wrong impression because only the results of scientific studies are presented, and people do not have any insight into the process leading to discovery. What we scientists can achieve in the coming period is to provide more chances for people to focus on the process. Personally, I think that the connection with art can help to lead the focus on the process than the result(Weijers说:“它经常造成错误的印象,因为只呈现科学研究的结果,人们对导致发现的过程没有任何洞察力。
【答案】31-35 E F C D A
根据上文“Any time you try something different to solve a problem, you're being creative. E项“Are some people naturally more creative than others? 中more creative与下文get more creative呼应,起到承上启下的作用,符合语境。故选E项。

66. showing 67. a 68. was reported
69. to study 70. wisdom 71. what 72. completely
73. inspired 74. them 75. to
Romance of the Three Kingdoms,泛指:一部中国经典名著,且Chinese的发音是辅音音素开头,故填a。
故填to study。
从结构可知,“________ he took away from The Art of War”是主语从句,在that引导的宾语从句中作主语,主语从句中缺少宾语,表示“……(东西)”应用连接代词what。故填what。
故填to。
故将are改为is。
故在将that改为what。
完整的状语从句为“When you are picking the right type of exercise”可知,状语从句中的主语you与省略了主语you的祈使句主语相同,并且状语从句中含有be动词,则可以将从句的主语和be动词一起省略。
故将our改为your。

固定搭配come from“来自”。故将for改为from。
too…to…
As the elderly woman was waiting in the queue at the cash register, I walked over to her daughter. “Mind some advice?” I asked. She rolled her eyes and said, “of course not.” I smiled to show her I wasn’t criticizing. “Cherish her and cherish every single moment you can stay with her,” I said. And then I answered her curious expression by saying, “When she's gone, it's these little moments that will come back to you. Moments like this. I know.” Having finished saying this, I noticed the elderly woman moving with her deliberation back to her daughter.
Together they made their way toward the store's exit. They stood there for a moment, side by side, watching the rush of the holiday current and for their place in it. Then the daughter glanced over her elderly mother. And slowly, almost unwillingly, she placed her arm with apparently unaccustomed affection around her mothers’ shoulders and gently guided her back into the crowd. Tears filled my eyes when I watched them disappearing in the crowd.
如:in the queue; criticize, deliberation等高级词汇;时间状语从句As the elderly woman was waiting in the queue at the cash register, I walked over to her daughter.;非谓语动词的运用Having finished saying this, I noticed the elderly woman moving with her deliberation back to her daughter.
