My favourite Books
— Posted by Catherine Chung, a great writer
Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang
This collection contains several maths stories. The one I recommend is Division By Zero, about Jane Parkinson, a brilliant German mathematician. To her great despair, she ends up proving that mathematics is inconsistent and is able to prove that any two numbers are equal. A beautiful, thought-provoking story about belief, understanding, and faith.
The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa
It’s about a woman who comes to work for a once-great mathematician. Due to a brain injury, he has only 80 minutes of short-term memory available to him before he forgets everything. It is filled with beautiful maths, simply and clearly described alongside finely drawn relationships between the characters.
Too Much Happiness by Alice Munro
Kovalevskaya was a 19th-century mathematician at a time when women were not allowed in most of Europe to attend university. She married a man who promised to take her to Germany to study. She made major contributions to the field and became the first woman in Russia to obtain a doctorate in mathematics.
The Ore Miner’s Wife by Karl Iagnemma
It is about a miner who thinks he’s discovered the proof to the problem: construct a square, equal in area to a given circle. His wife, not knowing what has suddenly taken his attention and his time, fears he is being unfaithful. In fact, what he does is a moving exploration of the joys of entering a problem.
1. Which book is about a pioneering Russian woman mathematician?
A. Stories of Your Life and Others. B. The Housekeeper and the Professor.

2. What do the listed books have in common?
A. They tell stories of woman mathematicians. B. They involve mathematics.
C. They explore human relationship. D. They reveal people’s inner world.
3. What can we learn from this text?
A. Jane Parkinson fails to show math was inconsistent.
B. The mathematician in Yoko Ogawa’s book has problem memorizing things.
C. In the 19th century, women in Europe didn’t have chance to get higher education.
D. The miner in Karl Iagnemma’s book is unfaithful to his wife.

It has been nearly a decade in making shoes, but Nike finally released a sneaker that can be put on completely hands-free. This is a game changer for countless people with disabilities, and it all started with a letter the company received back in 2012.
At the time, Matthew Walzer was 16 and frustrated by the lack of accessible tennis shoe options, as his cerebral palsy (脑瘫) limited his mobility. Matthew attempted to write a letter to Nike for help. In his letter he wrote, “I am able to completely dress myself, but my parents still have to tie my shoes. I find this extremely frustrating and, at times, embarrassing.”
Moved by the boy, Nike got to work and three years later launched the original Fly Ease, a sneaker with no laces. They sent a pair to Matthew, and he was absolutely thrilled. “When I put the shoes on every morning, they give the greatest sense of independence and accomplishment I have ever felt in my life.” he told them.
Ever since then, the company released a few progressive designs over the years, but the 2021 Nike Go Fly Ease is by far the best one yet! The newest release has gone a step further as the tennis shoes are not only lace-free but also hands-free. The heel hinges (装铰链), so a person’s foot can slip right in. Then, as they step down, the mechanism locks the shoe back in place.
While Matthew was the inspiration behind this entire line of sneakers, Nike hopes these shoes will be worn by people with disabilities, women in their third trimester of pregnancy, dog walkers, parents with their hands full, and basically anyone who would benefit from the slip-on shoes.
These shoes will make life better for so many people, and none of it would have happened if Matthew didn’t speak up and ask for more. He is real evidence that one enthusiastic person can transform the world for the better!

A. In2012. B. In 2015. C. In 2018. D. In 2021.

They say procrastination is the thief of time — actually deadlines are. New research has found that if you want someone to help you out with something, it is best not to set a deadline at all. But if you do set a deadline, make it short.
Professor Stephen Knowles tested the effect of deadline length on task completion for their research. Participants were invited to complete an online survey concerning a charity donation. They were given either one week, one month, or no deadline to respond. Professor Knowles says although the topic of the survey is about charity, the results are true of any situation where someone asks another person for help.
The study found responses to the survey were lowest for the one-month deadline and highest when no deadline was specified. No deadline and the one- week deadline led to many early responses, while a long deadline appeared to give people permission to procrastinate, and then forget. Professor Knowles wasn’t surprised to find that specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline. However, he did find it interesting that they received the most responses when no deadline was specified.
“We interpret this as evidence that specifying a longer deadline, as opposed to a short deadline or no deadline at all, removes the urgency to act,” he says. “People therefore put off undertaking the task, and since they are inattentive or forget, postponing it results in lower response rates.”
He says of the research that it is possible that not specifying a deadline might still have led participants to assume that there is an unspoken deadline. Professor Knowles hopes his research can help reduce the amount of procrastinating people do. “Many people procrastinate. They have the best intentions of helping someone out, but just do not get around to doing it. ”
8. Why did Professor Knowles do the research?
A. To study the role a deadline plays in procrastination.
B. To find out whether people are interested in charity.
C. To attract public attention to the effects of procrastination.
D. To test the effect of procrastination on task completion.
9. What most likely leads to procrastination?
A. No deadlines. B. Short deadlines. C. Specific deadlines. D. Long deadlines.
10. What’s the attitude of Professor Knowles to the findings of the study?
A. Interested. B. Conservative. C. Confused. D. Unsurprised.
11. Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “inattentive”?
A. careless B. unimportant C. lazy D. difficult
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. D 11. A
【解析】

【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“No deadline and the one- week deadline led to many early responses, while a long deadline appeared to give people permission to procrastinate, and then forget. (没有截止日期和一周的截止日期导致了许多早期的回复,而较长的截止日期似乎允许人们拖延,然后忘记)”可知,设定很长的截止日期最有可能导致拖延。故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Professor Knowles wasn’t surprised to find that specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline.( Knowles教授毫不惊讶地发现,与较长的截止日期相比,指定较短的截止日期会增加收到回复的机会)”可推知,Knowles教授对这项研究结果的态度是不惊讶的。故选D。
【11题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“People therefore put off undertaking the task, and since they are (因此,人们推迟了任务,因为他们)”以及后文“or forget, postponing it results in lower response rates (或者忘记,推迟任务会导致较低的回复率)”可知,此处指由于人们疏忽或忘记,人们会推迟完成任务,推迟任务会导致较低的回复率。故画线词意思是“疏忽的”。故选A。

A Christmas Tree for Mrs Mueller
Mrs Mueller was our next-door neighbor when my sister Laurel and I were growing up. She moved here after her husband died. She had no children and no relatives that we knew of. She was gentle and kind, and Laurel and I considered her our special friend.
One December, Mrs Mueller was ill in hospital. Laurel and I were busy making Christmas presents, and we pondered what to make for Mrs Mueller. We couldn’t bear seeing her come home before Christmas to an empty house with no holiday decorations. Then we lit upon the idea of decorating a small tree that would greet her with lights and cheer. We were wondering how to carry out our plan when the answer appeared.
I was in Miss O’Keefe’s sixth grade class that year, and we decorated a small tree with paper-link chains and ornaments we’d made in art class. It was beautiful. Best of all, it had to be removed from the classroom before Christmas vacation.
Miss O’Keefe said there would be a drawing for the tree. We’d each write our name on a piece of paper and put it in the box she had prepared. On the last day of school before vacation she’d draw a name from the box, and that student could take the tree home.
Great! That was exactly what I was longing for! So I wrote my name “Helen Wheeler” neatly on a piece of paper and folded it carefully. As I put it into the box, I whispered to Miss O’Keefe that I really hoped I’d win the tree because my sister and I wanted to give it to our neighbor. Though there were 30 children in the class and each might win the tree, I was somehow certain that I would get it because our cause was good: We wanted to make Mrs Mueller happy.
The day before vacation finally arrived. Laurel and I usually walked to and from school, but that day I persuaded Mom to pick us up in her car after school in case I really got the tree.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Before school was over Miss O’Keefe announced it was time for the drawing. My heart pounded as Miss O’ Keefe put her hand into the box and drew one folded piece of paper out. Then she unfolded the paper. looked at it and announced. “Helen has won the tree!” I was beside myself with excitement! And I’ll never forget the astonishment on my mother’s face as my sister and I carried the tree to her car. Since Mom had a key to Mrs Mueller’s house, we took the tree straight to her living room and set it up on a table. It looked so beautiful!
The next evening we welcomed Mrs Mueller back at her door. She slowly made her way into the house and turned on the lights. Greeted by the sparkling Christmas tree. Mrs Mueller was rooted to the spot, looking surprised. Then a sweet smile appeared on her face and tears welled up in her eyes. “Thank you so much. she said softly. While Laurel and I were excitedly recounting the story. it suddenly dawned on me that Miss O’ Keefe had helped me in a secret way: Though she had announced my name, she never showed anyone what was written on that piece of paper!
