Jerry is a world-famous mountain climber. He has climbed many high mountains in the world. Starting in 2015, he and his friends spent two years on an adventure(探险)in South America, covering 7,800 miles. He was even named Adventure of the Year by a famous geography magazine in 2018.
Although Jerry had achieved great success, he didn’t feel fulfilled. He asked himself, “Is it enough to climb the highest mountains? Am I doing something helpful? How can I turn my adventures into something that can help the world?”
Jerry learned that scientists need plants, rocks and water samples(样本)from the places far away to do research. But scientists can’t get there themselves as such places are hard to reach——only the bravest adventurers can make it. Jerry thought himself could do something to help. He then came up with an idea. He set up a team of top adventures to collect samples for scientists. By studying the samples, scientists could know more about the earth and find ways to protect it.
Recently Jerry and his adventurer friends have discovered a special plant life of Mountain Qomolangma. The samples they brought back have helped scientists how plants live in extreme(极端的)conditions.
For Jerry, this kind of adventure is most satisfying. “Such adventures had made us see life in a different way. Now, being the best climber isn’t important for me, what matters is doing something helpful while climbing the mountains. There is still much more we can do.” Jerry said to a newspaper.

Slowly but surely, Amy and her grandparents were making progress. Boxes of all sizes were placed on top of each other throughout the house. Amy’s grandparents had lived in the house for years and they had collected many things.
The dining room was full of memories. Amy’s grandfather kept many fine dinner plates(盘子)from his hometown. Amy remembered that they ate from the red, yellow, and blue plates during important holidays.
After carefully wrapping up(包裹)the plates and putting them into a box, Amy lifted it up and moved it out of the way. But the box was too heavy. It suddenly fell from her arms and dropped to the floor. All three of them heard the plates shatter.

When I was a girl growing up, I cannot once ever remember either my mum or my grandma wasting food.
Anything we didn't eat at one meal was leftovers(剩菜). I can remember my grandma making a huge pot of potatoes. We would all eat until we were full enough, but there were always about half of the potatoes leftover. A few days later, Grandma would take those potatoes out of the fridge, boil some noodles, add some vegetables and mix them all together. And I also remember when I watched my mum fry bacon (煎培根)for us in the mornings, she would always take the oil carefully and pour it into a bottle. Then she would use it later to add flavor to so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that potatoes didn't actually taste like bacon!
I learned their lessons well, and after I grew up, I tried to never waste food myself. Every meal went into our stomachs and any leftovers were later eaten by either myself my boys, my husband or my dogs. To me, throwing food into the bin was just wrong.
However, when it comes to living, there are no leftovers. Life is just like a feast. Each moment that you don’t live is lost forever. Life cannot be saved or stored. Each day is a fresh beginning. Live each moment of your life to the fullest, then.

Amy carried the milk back to Mama, then wandered up the road. Roy, a village boy, was trying to stand on a horse’s back. “No wonder they don’t trust kids with anything important,” Amy thought.

An elephant and a crocodile were once standing beside river. They were disputing which was the better animal.
“Look at my strength,” said the elephant. “I can pull up a tree, roots and all with my trunk”
“Ah! But your skin is not nearly so thick as mine,” replied the crocodile. “No knife or tooth can cut through it.”
Just as they were coming to blows, a lion happened to pass.
“My dear friends !” said the King of all animals, going up to them. “Let me know the cause of your disagreement.”
“Will you kindly tell us which is the better animal?” cried both at once.
“Certainly”,said the lion, pointing across the river. “Do you see the soldiers’ metal hat on that wall?”
“Yes!” replied the beasts.
“Well, then,” continued the lion, “ go and get it, and bring it to me, and I shall be able then to decide between you.”
Upon hearing this, off they started. The crocodile, being used to the water, reached the opposite side of the river first, and was soon standing beside the wall.
Here he waited till the elephant came up. The elephant, seeing that the crocodile had no way of reaching their goal, raised his long trunk, and took down the hat quite easily.
They then made their way together back again across the river. The elephant was trying to keep up with the fast-moving crocodile in the water and became careless. When he was forced to turn sharply to avoid a floating tree branch, the elephant dropped the hat and it fell to the river bottom. The crocodile noticed the accident, so down he dived, and brought it up in his huge mouth. They then returned, and the crocodile laid the metal hat at the lion's feet. The King took it up, and turning to the elephant, said:
“You, because of your size and trunk, were able to reach the hat on the wall but, having lost it, you were unable to get it back. And you,” said the lion to the crocodile, “although unable to reach the hat, were able to dive for it and save it. You are both wise and able in your own ways. One is no better than the other.”

For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children’s Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.
To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Lin's artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Lin’s parents would let him decide.
Lin's eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at "Photography". He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin's family weren't poor, they weren’t rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.
The next course to catch his eye was "Language Art". He didn’t even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse.
Then he saw it. "Cooking" sounded like something he'd like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient, it could be done alone and it was also creative.
Based on Lin’s hobby history, his dad had doubts, but he agreed. Much to his parents' surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the Centre every Saturday, and practised at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.

Mac began to cycle alone. A few minutes later, Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that’s a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw immediately that it wasn’t a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.
Mac’s heart jumped. He searched and took out his can of bear spray(防熊喷雾). With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal. To Mac’s relief(宽慰), it fell back, shaking its head. A minute later, however, it was again by his side. It even attacked the back of Mac’s bike, tearing open his tent bag. My school had a tradition every year during the eighth grade graduation: a gold and green jacket was given as a scholarship to the student who had kept the highest grades for eight years.
I was in Grade Eight, having been a straight A student since the first grade. My father couldn’t earn enough money to feed eight children, so I was raised by my grandparents. We couldn’t afford any fees at school. Obviously, there would never be a sports school jacket for us. This time, the scholarship jacket, was our only chance.
One day in May, I accidently heard arguing in my classroom.
“I refuse to do it! I don’t care who her father is, her grades don’t even begin to compare to Martha’s. I won’t lie.” That was my history teacher and he sounded very angry.
My math teacher’s voice sounded calm and quiet.
“Look, Joann’s father is not only on the Board, he owns the only store in town. We could. . . ?”
To this day I didn’t remember how I made it through the rest of the afternoon.
The next day, the headmaster called me into his office and told me there had been a change this year about the scholarship jacket. If I was unable to pay fifteen dollars for the jacket, it would be given to the next one in line. I stood with the pounding in my ears and tears in my eyes. I told him I would answer him the next day, then rushed out of the office and cried on the walk home.
I told my Grandpa the headmaster’s words. He asked me quietly, “What does a scholarship jacket mean?” “It means you’ve earned it by having the highest grades for eight years and that’s why they’re giving it to you.” Suddenly I realized it was not a matter of money. He spoke again. “Then if you pay for it, Martha, it’s not a scholarship jacket, is it?”
I walked into the headmaster’s office the next day and told him what my grandpa had said. Then I stood up to leave. I was almost to the door when he stopped me, biting his lip, as if thinking.
“Okay, Martha. We’ll make an exception in your case. I’ll tell the Board. You’ll get your jacket. ”

A.He was kind and wanted to help the students who always had good grades.
B.He was a new headmaster in Martha’s school and did not know the tradition.

D.He was afraid of facing Martha because she had kept the highest grades for 8 years.

Summer vacation became very boring when my best friends left for summer camp. Getting up later each morning, I was spending more and more time with my smart phone and the TV. But when my mom told me that I couldn’t use my smart phone, I felt like I had lost my world. I had nothing to do, circling from room to room all day.
One day, Mom asked me if I would accept a challenge to follow the same ant for ten minutes.
“What’s so difficult about that?” I asked.
“You might be surprised.” Mom smiled
“Is there a prize for the challenge?” I asked.
“Of course. But if you lose, you’ll have to do some housework.”
To win the challenge, I needed a special ant so that I could follow him easily. My eyes were fixed on a big ant carrying a leaf. “There he goes, Mom.” She set the timer for 10 minutes.
For the first time, the ant ran all the way to the gate. “Perfect!” I thought. Then, he came to a wide crack(裂缝), he tried to cross, but failed. Then he disappeared into the grass. My heart sank as I saw myself cleaning the bathroom. Then surprisingly, he climbed out carrying a piece of leaf and was back on his way.
For the last three minutes, he dropped his leaf as if he would disappear again. To my surprise, he placed the leaf across the crack and walked across it to the other side like a bridge. Wow!
Just then, my mom’s timer rang. I was lucky to win my prize. But I was mostly encouraged by the ant that actually created its own bridge. Now Mom has allowed me to have my phone, but I learned there is still more other fun in life.

Teachers are often considered to be engineers of the human soul. They are expected to spread knowledge, ideas and truth. There’s one person in China who is called the “teacher of teachers”. He is Tao Xingzhi, a Chinese educator.
Born in Anhui province, China, in 1891, Tao studied abroad for educational philosophy. When Tao returned to China in 1917 and began his own career as an educator, he did not blindly follow western education methods or theories. In fact, he changed the saying of “Education is life itself” to “Life is education”. Similarly, instead of “school as society(社会)”, he saw it as “society as school”.
For Tao, education is an active experience in real-life instead of telling and being told. He supported “unity of teaching, learning, and reflective(反思的) acting”.
Besides developing education methods, Tao also tried his best to improve mass education. After doing surveys in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai in 1921, Tao was surprised to learn that in China more than 70% of the people in the city didn’t know how to read or write.
To solve the problem, Tao organized young workers and farmers to study while working. To deal with the shortage of teachers and money, in 1927, Tao set up Xiaozhuang Normal College in Nanjing to train teachers and educators, most of whom became teachers at schools in the countryside.
In January 1934, he started the “Little Teacher” movement in which young students were encouraged to serve as teachers to others, even to those older than themselves. Under Tao’s guidance, over 18,000 “little teachers” were invited in Shanghai within 10 months. It later included 28 provinces and cities as a key nationwide education movement. Even in the fight against the Japanese army, Tao never forgot his dream. He founded a middle school in Chongqing and offered free education to poor children.
Maybe Tao’s motto is the best explanation for his life. “Giving a whole heart, yet taking nothing in return, not even a leaf of grass.”

a. He did surveys in different places in China.

In 2021, Zhang Guimei sent 150 female students to college from a free all-girls high school she had founded in southwest China’s deep mountains. For the past 13 years, a total of 1,954 female students have graduated from this school, the first and only one of its kind in the country.
“To educate a girl is to change the destiny of three generations,” Zhang said. The teacher from southwest China’s Yunnan Province was presented with the July 1 Medal at a ceremony in Beijing on Tuesday in 2021.
Zhang was born to a family in Heilongjiang Province in 1957. At the age of 17, she came with her sister to Yunnan. She met her husband in Dali and worked as a teacher in a local school.
But the good times didn’t last long. Her husband died in the mid-1990s, five years into their marriage. Zhang was so sad that she packed her stuff and went some 260 kilometers away to Huaping, a county in the mountains.
After becoming a “mother” at a “Children’s Home” in 2001, Zhang learned more about the backgrounds of those young kids. Some of the mothers died from childbirth because of medical misconceptions, leaving behind their newborns.
Over time, Zhang found that the students in poor areas faced unequal access to good education. Some girls were even pulled out of class just before the college entrance exam because they had to provide for their brothers.
In 2002, Zhang came up with an idea, which, to many, seemed crazy: to found a free high school for girls. That was a tough task. She had to raise money and hire teachers. Six years later, she founded the Huaping All-Girls High School. With the goal of never letting a girl fall behind in schooling, Zhang often works overtime even though she suffers from different illnesses all the time. She even has walked to almost every family deep in the mountains, talking to the parents about the importance of education for girls.
Because of Zhang’s efforts to improve female education in China, more girls can change their destiny.
22.Why did Zhang Guimei found the Huaping All-Girls High School? ________

Warm by Cutting Firewood for Those in Need
Washington is home to lots of trees—it is the Evergreen State, after all—and it has lots of fireplaces and wood-burning heaters too. But what if you lived there and couldn’t cut wood or couldn’t afford to pay someone to do it? Luckily, Shane McDaniel and his twin sons, Harrison and Henry McDaniel, are happy to help. The three men cut truckloads of wood—then give it to those in need.
The idea actually started as a father-son relationship project, Shane told msn.com. “I cut wood with my dad. He just loved doing it,” said Shane. He wanted to pass along that feeling, so he and the twins spent the summer cutting. The result was a great wall of wood piled up(堆积) around their house. To buy that much it would cost about $10,000.
It was too much for the McDaniels to use themselves, and when the weather turned cold that November, Shane started thinking of others. He posted online: “IF YOU ARE IN NEED OF FIREWOOD AND CANNOT AFFORD IT, PLEASE PM [personal message] ME!…If you know someone who BURNS WOOD, please help me and my boys make sure NO ONE GOES COLD IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD.”
The response was immediate. One man offered to donate a wood-burning stove. Others raced over to Shane’s house with more wood. One woman, noticing the photo of the McDaniels, started to feel warm in other ways: “I don’t need the wood. But I am truly happy for what you have done!”
Single mom Katelyn Ticer, 29, and her four-year-old daughter depended on a wood-burning stove as their only way of heat, so it was so good to receive a truckload of firewood from the McDaniels. “To get that much wood brought me to tears,” she told msn.com. “So much stress and worry is off my shoulders. I couldn’t be more thankful.”
Shane is ready to help more people. “Giving is the reward,” he said. “It has nothing to do with how well it’s received; it’s about how much it’s needed.”
26.Why did Shane and his twin sons cut the wood?

A.result B.feedback C.reaction D.effect

A.Many people came to his house to get wood.
B.He received a lot of gifts from his neighbors.
C.A lot of wood piled up around his house.

30.What did Shane think of helping others?
