Three years into my postdoctoral (博士后) position, I decided I needed a new career plan. After applying for more than two dozen teaching jobs, I hadn’t landed a single interview. I was disappointed but not surprised. I was applying in the middle of the 2008 financial crisis, when many universities carried out hiring freezes, and my publication record didn’t stand out.
One day after my failed job search, my office mate was amazed by what a journal’s scientific illustrator had done to the sketches (草图) in her review article with artistic techniques. I thought to myself, “That would be such a fun job.” A long dormant (蛰伏的) dream of becoming an artist began to stir.
My family was bursting with mathematicians and engineers who pursued music and literature in their spare time, so it felt natural to have my daily life revolve around science, with art as my dreamy lunar companion. I had once considered going to art school but had put that idea aside when I decided to pursue chemistry as an undergraduate. In the years that followed, I kept up my interest in art by taking drawing and painting classes at night.
I decided to test out a new career direction by creating similar illustrations for my institute’s newsletters. I spent nights and weekends reading scientific papers and thinking about how to illustrate the results. It was a fun task-something that engaged my artistic, creative side and made use of my scientific training. I felt I was on the right path.
It was exciting to find a career that drew on my diverse skill set. I did feel a sense of loss for not becoming an academic educator, and I worried I’d be letting down the people and institutions who’d invested time and resources in me. But it helped to remind me that my new career path wasn’t removed from science. I now work as a visual designer at a biomedical research institute, not far from my husband’s company, and my business is flying.
    24. Why did the author fail to land a job at first?
    A. She lacked interview skills. B. It was a very difficult period.
    C. Her publications were of little value. D. Universities adopted rigid hiring requirements.
    25. What mainly influenced the author’s choice of science?
    A. Her family culture. B. Her childhood dream.
    C. Her talent for science. D. Her colleague’s encouragement.
    26. Which of the following best describes the author?
    A. Romantic and curious. B. Creative and generous.
    C. Humorous and hard-working. D. Science-pursuing and considerate.
    27. What can be the best title of the passage?
    A. Power from Science B. Challenge of Job Hunting
    C. Shift from Traditional Belief D. Take-off with Artistic Wings
B 25. A 26. D 27. D

根据第一段的“After applying for more than two dozen teaching jobs, I hadn’t landed a single interview. I was disappointed but not surprised. I was applying in the middle of the 2008 financial crisis, when many universities carried out hiring freezes, and my publication record didn’t stand out.( 我申请了二十多个教学工作,却连一次面试机会都没有。我很失望,但并不惊讶。我是在2008年金融危机期间申请的,当时许多大学都冻结了招聘,我的论文发表记录并不突出。)”可知,作者没有找到工作是因为当时是金融危机的困难时期。故选B。
    【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“My family was bursting with mathematicians and engineers who pursued music and literature in their spare time, so it felt natural to have my daily life revolve around science, with art as my dreamy lunar companion.( 我的家里有很多数学家和工程师,他们在业余时间从事音乐和文学,所以我的日常生活围绕着科学,而艺术则是我梦想中的月球伴侣,这感觉很自然。)” 故选A。
根据倒数第二段的“I spent nights and weekends reading scientific papers and thinking about how to illustrate the results. It was a fun task-something that engaged my artistic, creative side and made use of my scientific training. I felt I was on the right path.( 我用晚上和周末的时间阅读科学论文,思考如何说明这些结果。这是一项有趣的任务,既能发挥我艺术、创造的一面,又能利用我的科学方面的训练。我觉得我走在正确的道路上。)”可知,尽管作者发挥了自己的艺术和创造性的一面,但是仍旧充分利用学到的科学知识,说明作者是有科学追求的,和倒数第一段的“I did feel a sense of loss for not becoming an academic educator, and I worried I’d be letting down the people and institutions who’d invested time and resources in me. But it helped to remind me that my new career path wasn’t removed from science.( 没有成为一名学术教育工作者,我确实有一种失落感,我担心我会让在我身上投入时间和资源的人和机构失望。但它提醒我,我的新职业道路并没有远离科学。)”可知,作者担心会让在自己身上投入了资源和时间的人失望,说明作者是体贴他人的,因此可推断,作者是有科学追求和体贴他人的。故选D。
    【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段的“A long dormant(蛰伏的)dream of becoming an artist began to stir.( 蛰伏已久的成为艺术家的梦想开始萌动。)”和最后一段的“I now work as a visual designer at a biomedical research institute, not far from my husband’s company, and my business is flying.(我现在在一家生物医学研究所担任视觉设计师,离我丈夫的公司不远,我的事业蒸蒸日上)”以及本文其他叙述可知,作者讲述了自己对于艺术的追求,尽管接受了科学的训练,作者仍旧追求自己的艺术梦想,并获得两者兼顾的事业。
    C
Adults are often unwilling to ask for aid. The moment you ask for directions, after all, you reveal that you are lost. Seeking assistance can feel like you are broadcasting your incompetence.
New research suggests young children don’t seek help in school for the same reason. They hate hearing irresponsible comments. Psychologists assumed that children did not start to care about their reputation until around age nine. This research has revealed that youngsters as young as age five start to care about the way others think about them. It also suggests that as early as age seven, children begin to connect asking for help with looking incompetent in front of others.
Our researchers crafted simple stories and then asked children questions to allow them to show their thinking. In one study, they asked 576 children aged four to nine to predict the behavior of two kids in a story. One of the kids genuinely wanted to be smart, and the other merely wanted to seem smart to others. Both kids did poorly on a test. Children were asked which of these kids would be more likely to ask the teacher for help in front of their class.
The four-year-olds were equally likely to choose either of the two kids as the one who would seek help. But by age seven or eight, children thought that the kid who wanted to seem smart would be less likely to ask for assistance. When assistance could be sought privately, they thought both characters were equally likely to ask for it.
If children are afraid to ask for help because their classmates are watching, learning will suffer. Teachers could make themselves available to students for one-on-one conversations while their classmates tackle group work. They should also help students perceive it as positive behavior.
Seeking help could even be framed as socially desirable. Parents could point out how a child’s question kicked off a valuable conversation in which the entire family got to talk and learn together. Such response sends a strong signal that other people value a willingness to ask for aid.
    28. Why do children resist asking for help in school?
    A. To avoid judgement. B. To be independent.
    C. To hide competence. D. To live in their own world.
    29. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
    A. Why the study was designed. B. How the study was carried out.
    C. Who were involved in the study. D. What the study told us about kids.
    30. What is suggested for teachers as a possible solution?
    A. Paying attention to group work. B. Building a class of positive behavior.
    C. Having personal interaction with students. D. Warning students against learning difficulties.
    31. What should parents do to help children seek aid?
    A. Lower the social risks. B. Talk to them regularly.
    C. Learn together with them. D. Show the value of their questions.
A 29. B 30. C 31. D
根据第二段中“It also suggests that as early as age seven, children begin to connect asking for help with looking incompetent in front of others.(研究还表明,早在7岁时,儿童就开始将寻求帮助与在他人面前表现无能联系起来)”可知,孩子们在学校拒绝寻求帮助是因为怕别人认为自己无能。 故选A。
根据第三段“Our researchers crafted simple stories and then asked children questions to allow them to show their thinking. In one study, they asked 576 children aged four to nine to predict the behavior of two kids in a story. One of the kids genuinely wanted to be smart, and the other merely wanted to seem smart to others. Both kids did poorly on a test. Children were asked which of these kids would be more likely to ask the teacher for help in front of their class.(我们的研究人员构思了一些简单的故事,然后问孩子们一些问题,让他们展示自己的想法。在一项研究中,他们让576名4到9岁的儿童预测一个故事中两个孩子的行为。其中一个孩子是真心想变得聪明,而另一个只是想在别人眼里显得聪明。两个孩子都考得很差。孩子们被问到,这些孩子中哪一个更有可能在全班同学面前向老师求助)”可知,第三段主要讲了研究是如何进行的。故选B。
    【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Teachers could make themselves available to students for one-on-one conversations while their classmates tackle group work. They should also help students perceive it as positive behavior.(在同学们做小组作业的时候,老师可以和学生进行一对一的对话。他们还应该帮助学生将其视为积极的行为)”可知,与学生进行个人互动可以作为可能的解决方案。故选C。
    【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Parents could point out how a child’s question kicked off a valuable conversation in which the entire family got to talk and learn together.(父母可以指出孩子的问题如何引发了一场有价值的对话,整个家庭都在一起交谈和学习)”可知,父母应该展示他们问题的价值,来帮助孩子寻求帮助。故选D。

Companies like Google, Apple and Intel offer some of California’s most cutting-edge-and highest-paying-jobs. Last year, those three companies alone brought in more than 10,000 people from other countries to take those jobs.
Surely it’d be simpler for them to hire closer to home. Among the key reasons they don’t is that too few Californians have the skills-in particular, the deep understanding of mathematics to qualify. It’s something the state’s new proposed math framework seeks to change.
The current system of mathematics teaching in the U. S. invites few students into the richness of thought and of learning. We blunt our children’s possibilities nearly from the start, telling far too many of them at a very early age that math isn’t for them. Sometimes those communications are clear and direct; they’re planted in decisions, by schools or districts, to put students on different tracks as early as third or fourth grade and teach them that math often limits how far they can go.
My first assignment as a mathematics teacher was to teach 13-year-olds who had been assigned to the lower-level tracks. One girl understood the message of that ability grouping all too well. She caught me up short with the question, “Why should I bother?”
The question became our shared challenge. I gave her more difficult work so she could do well on the national mathematics exam. She passed that exam, which allowed her to train to become a sound engineer.
She had been told she was not good enough for mathematics-and it was not true. Too many students in California are given the same message-and it is one of the reasons the U. S. has relatively few students who are proficient in math. That’s why California’s new mathematics framework has been introduced.
    32. What does the author intend to show by mentioning some companies?
    A. Their competing advantage. B. Their hire in foreign countries.
    C. Their benefits from high tech. D. Their demand for staff qualification.
    33. What does the underlined word “blunt” mean in Paragraph 3?
    A. Reduce. B. Explore. C. Test. D. Accept.
    34. How did the girl feel about the ability grouping?
    A. Amused. B. Anxious. C. Helpless. D. Puzzled.
    35. What will be talked about next?
    A. Need for framework change. B. Contents of the new framework.
    C. Comments on the existing framework. D. Challenges from the framework making
D 33. A 34. C 35. B
根据第一段“Companies like Google, Apple and Intel offer some of California’s most cutting-edge-and highest-paying-jobs. Last year, those three companies alone brought in more than 10,000 people from other countries to take those jobs.(像谷歌、苹果和英特尔这样的公司为加州提供了一些最前沿、薪酬最高的工作岗位。去年,仅这三家公司就从其他国家引进了1万多人来填补这些工作岗位)”以及第二段“Surely it’d be simpler for them to hire closer to home. Among the key reasons they don’t is that too few Californians have the skills-in particular, the deep understanding of mathematics to qualify. It’s something the state’s new proposed math framework seeks to change.(当然,对他们来说,在离家近的地方雇人会更简单。其中一个关键原因是,加州具备这些技能的人太少了——尤其是对数学的深刻理解。这正是该州新提出的数学框架试图改变的东西)”可知,作者想通过提及一些公司来说明他们对员工资格的要求。故选D。
    【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“The current system of mathematics teaching in the U. S. invites few students into the richness of thought and of learning.(美国现行的数学教学体系很少能让学生进入思想的丰富和学习的丰富)”以及画线词后文“our children’s possibilities nearly from the start”可知,美国现行的数学教学体系很少能让学生进入思想的丰富和学习的丰富,所以我们几乎从一开始就削弱了孩子们的可能性,故画线词意思是“减少,削弱”。故选A。
根据倒数第三段中“One girl understood the message of that ability grouping all too well. She caught me up short with the question, “Why should I bother?”(一个女孩非常理解这种能力分组所传达的信息。她突然问了我一个问题:“我为什么要自找麻烦呢?”)”和倒数第二段的“I gave her more difficult work so she could do well on the national mathematics exam. She passed that exam, which allowed her to train to become a sound engineer.(我给了她更难的练习,这样她就可以在全国数学考试中取得好成绩。她通过了考试,这使她能够接受培训,成为一名音响工程师)”可知,女孩在数学方面有实力,却被分在了水平较低的组。由此推知,女孩对能力分组感到无助。故选C。
    【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“That’s why California’s new mathematics framework has been introduced.(这就是为什么加州引入了新的数学框架)”可推知,接下来要谈新框架的内容。

根据后文“In this way you can put all the faults and the problems on others. That’s nice and convenient. Actually, it’s just an attempt to refuse to take responsibility for your own faults, doing absolutely nothing about it.(这样你就可以把所有的过错和问题都推给别人。这很好也很方便。实际上,这只是一种拒绝为自己的错误承担责任的尝试,完全不起任何作用)”可知,后文提到把过错和问题推给别人,故本句说明在指责他人的情况。故D选项“指责别人很容易”符合语境,下文this way指的就是选项内容。故选D。
    【37题详解】
根据上文“There really is no benefit in blaming people or circumstances. By ignoring your own contribution to the situation or insisting that others are to blame, you are refusing to take control of your life.(责备别人或环境真的没有好处。如果你忽视了自己对现状的贡献,或者坚持认为是别人的错,你就拒绝掌控自己的生活)”可知,上文论述了责备别人或环境没有好处,本句为本段最后一句。由此可知,本句指出这对自己处境的影响:会对自己的处境感到无助。故G选项“因此,你会对自己的处境感到无助”符合语境,故选G。
    【38题详解】
根据上文“So it’s better to try to control your reactions rather than blame others.(所以最好是控制自己的反应,而不是责怪别人)”以及后文“Essentially, you must stop letting other people’s actions affect you. Think about your own response and take charge. Respond by taking action to address what can be addressed.(从根本上说,你必须停止让别人的行为影响你。想想你自己的反应,然后掌控局面。采取行动解决可以解决的问题)”可知,上文提到控制自己的反应,不要责怪别人,故本句是在说明应该用正确的方式回应。故E选项“你应该用正确的方式回应”符合语境,故选E。
    【39题详解】
根据上文“Essentially, you must stop letting other people’s actions affect you. Think about your own response and take charge. Respond by taking action to address what can be addressed.(从根本上说,你必须停止让别人的行为影响你。想想你自己的反应,然后掌控局面。采取行动解决可以解决的问题)”可知,上文提到了具体的方法,本句为本段最后一句,应承接上文,说明这么做的好处。故F选项“一旦你这样做了,你就不会浪费时间责怪别人了”符合语境,故选F。
    【40题详解】
根据上文“Never again allow yourself to say “I can’t help it. It wasn’t my fault.” George Bernard Shaw said, “People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are.(永远不要再允许自己说“我没办法。这不是我的错。”萧伯纳说过:“人们总是把自己的处境归咎于环境)”以及后文“I admire people who look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them.(我钦佩那些寻找他们想要的机会的人,如果他们找不到机会,就自己创造机会)”可知,后文提到钦佩寻找想要机会的人,可见萧伯纳并不相信环境。故C选项“我不相信环境”符合语境,故选C。

Volunteer work presents us with a great opportunity for our future development. Among so many volunteer activities, I strongly recommend volunteering in the nursing home. We can spend weekends in the local nursing community, offering help like doing some cleaning, or chatting with them so that they won’t feel lonely.
Such an activity can provide us students with a chance to take part in social activities and help those in need. More importantly, it is a way for students to learn to respect the old and show concern for others.

Now that Emily was 12 she could walk to school without her parents. And even better, she could go with her best friend, Heidi, who lived on the same street as her.
The only problem was that Emily had to walk the long way round, which took them a good 15 minutes longer. She just could not take the shortcut through the park.
But Heidi never complained. They had been hanging out at each other’s houses for as long as they could remember. The best times were when they had sleepovers and could sit up late talking about anything and everything and everyone.
So if anyone understood why Emily could not walk through the park, it was Heidi.
Emily was a sweet girl except that she was frightened at dogs! So she had to avoid certain places where they might be. She was always conscious of where she went and got quite good at finding ways to avoid encountering any of them. She planned ahead good and proper before she headed outdoors or to a friend’s home. She could even spot one a mile away!
But the strange thing was, she didn’t dislike dogs. In fact she was quite fond of the idea of them. She was feeling that her fear was preventing her from living life to the full. She was starting to become tired of constantly avoiding her big fear. She wanted so badly to be able to pet a dog like “normal” people did. She tried to overcome her fear, but it usually ended in tears and a feeling of disappointment.
As her best friend, Heidi couldn’t stand by. She believed that power of friendship could help Emily overcome the fear.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day Heidi got a dog.

After several restless nights, Emily went to Heidi’s house and rang the bell.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
One day Heidi got a dog. When Heidi broke the news, Emily knew she would never be able to come to Heidi’s house again! And the next day she walked to school on her own. That evening, she went back home alone, thinking if she would avoid Heidi forever. And then she thought about how they had played together since they were just three years old. Heidi had been very supportive to her and she realised she couldn’t lose her best friend.
After several restless nights, Emily went to Heidi’s house and rang the bell. The first thing she heard was a little dog’s cry. She shuddered. Even though she could tell from the sound that it was only a tiny little thing that made it, it didn’t help. She felt a familiar foreboding. Soon she was facing her fear! Heidi’s dad opened the door. Heidi’s dog was about ten inches long. Now he tried to come near enough to greet her. She cautiously pet the little wriggling bag of fluff for at least ten seconds. It wasn’t long. But it was a start.
