    “What is that?”
“It looks like a fossil (化石).”
    “It looks part-human.”
    “It can’t be ...”
The words “animal” and “human” were argued about by the archeologists (考古学家).
“What if (要是……会怎么样呢) it’s neither human nor animal? What if it’s something we haven’t discovered yet?” I said.
    There was silence.
Paul said, “I think you might be right, Jack. It isn’t an animal we know of. It’s not human. What else could it be?”
The other scientists started talking again. They talked about tests they could run. They headed back to their computers to begin researching.
Paul and I continued to examine the fossil. It seemed that the creature (生物) was smaller than a human, and could stand on two legs.
Paul and I researched until very late. The next morning, I rushed straight to the fossil. The fossil was different! Now it looked like a small bear.
“What happened?” I asked. Everyone had a puzzled look on their faces and no one had an answer. During the day, we found nothing that was helpful in solving the mystery.
When night fell, we set up a rotation (轮班) to make sure two of us were with the fossil at all times. All was quiet for my watch (值班) at midnight.
In the morning, I went to the fossil. It had changed again! This time it looked like a sheep. No one had seen or heard anything on their watch.
How and why did it keep changing? To this day, no one has found the answer to the mystery, but it is very interesting to see the creatures the fossil dreams up!

It’s nothing new for archeologists to discover ancient cities. Falerii Novi stands out, however, because of one thing — they didn’t have to dig in the ground to find it.
Recently, a group of researchers from the UK and Belgium created a map of Falerii Novi, an ancient Roman city. By using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) (探地雷达) technology, they were able to produce a complete 3D map of the city. They were also able to understand how Falerii Novi was organized.
Falerii Novi was built in 241 BC and lasted until around 700 AD. It was located about 30 miles north of Rome. It is known from historical records and has been studied using other technologies before. But this new technology has helped researchers find out more about Falerii Novi.
Falerii Novi was one of the many cities in ancient Rome. The well-known ancient city of Pompeii was about 150 acres (英亩) in size. Falerii Novi was about half the size of Pompeii. It had a network of aqueducts (渡槽) that ran along the streets. Home to as many as 3,000 people, the city had 60 large houses, a temple (庙宇), a well-planned public bathhouse and a market.
“GPR technology really changes how we can study and understand Roman cities — the way of the future for archeology,” said Martin Millett, a researcher from the University of Cambridge.

    部分解析
    单项选择:
