When there was a hole in Arguster’s jeans, his mother would put a patch on it.However, the hole kept going. It was the naughty kids,Arguster included, that took the jeans out, hung them on a line and shot them to put holes.Aware of that, however,Ben,the father, didn’t rebuke them, knowing it might be the only way to bring laughter to his kids.
Arguster’s first lesson in economics was taught by Ben.The childish kid had worked and made a little extra money. He couldn’t help admiring himself,“I make six dollars!Six dollars!Man!I’m on the top of the world!” With a great thrill,Arguster decided to go to the fair, where he played games, ate cotton candy...When asked by Ben how much he had spent, with his head down,Arguster replied,“Daddy,I spent it all...” Looking at his messy hair,Ben sighed,“Boy,you spent all your money and a haircut’s gone up to 75 cents.I’m afraid...” From then on,Arguster always kept enough money to get himself a haircut.

Online education has grown fast over the past ten years. The explosion of technology has made teaching outside the traditional classroom possible for teachers and has provided learners with easy access to course materials. Its attractiveness, benefits, and challenges are addressed.
In April,2005,I was approached by a student who was interested in our doctoral program. However, the first question out of her mouth was,“Do you offer any online courses?” Later that day,as I was reading the conference program guide trying for interesting presentations,I noticed many workshops on web-based learning and online education.I later attended two of those workshops and met several professors from different universities who had either taught online courses for quite some time or who were discovering the best practice for teaching online. These experiences helped me realize at least to some extent the degree of growth in online education.
My responsibilities for the term included gaining more understanding of online education.Consequently,I made several attempts to enrich my knowledge of distance learning and online teaching.I consulted with my colleagues who were teaching online courses. This helped me recognize the importance of getting materials prepared even before the start of a term.I also learned that online courses may consume more time than regular classroom teaching. And I attended several workshops regarding online education and established a network with those who were involved in online programs at other universities.I would consider these people as my consultants as I began to design my own online course. Also,I conducted a brief survey with 15 students and two staff members who had taken or taught an online course before to understand their experience.Eventually I completed a literature review which gave me the foundation and the background of understanding the need for online education.

D.To predict the future of the teaching career.

    B.The professional responsibilities.
    C.The requirement of research.
    D.The colleagues’ encouragement.

Reading books can obviously make you a better, smarter entrepreneur.According to a 2018 study of over 160,000 adults in 31 countries, the more books that were present in participants’ childhood homes, the more competent they now are as adults with skills in literacy, mathematics, and technological problem-solving.Researchers note that book-oriented socialization, indicated by home library size, equips youth with lifelong tastes, skill and knowledge.
Growing up with home libraries boosts adult skills in literacy, numeracy and technological problem-solving beyond the benefits acquired from parental education or your own educational or occupational attainment.Kids who grow up in a home where reading is valued and modeled are more likely to be good readers.Strangely enough, though, advanced education doesn’t necessarily offset the “lots of books in the home” advantage.Adults who grew up with relatively few books in their homes and later earned a college degree had literacy levels approximately equal to adults who grew up in homes with large libraries but only attended school for nine years.
Jessica Stillman writes, surrounding yourself with more books than you could ever read says good things about your mind. Those books serve as a constant reminder of all the things you don’t know—which helps keep you intellectually hungry and curious. And possibly, this will keep you a little more modest, since research shows the quicker you are to admit you don’t know something, the faster you can then learn it.As Jeff Bezos says,a key sign of intelligence is the willingness to change your mind, something that only happens if you’re willing to admit that your current thinking may not be the best thinking.Modesty, learning and the willingness to change your mind when new data presents itself: That’s another three bonus every entrepreneur can benefit from.
12.What does paragraph 1 mainly talk about?
A.The tough process of the research.
B.An inspiring discovery of the research.
    C.Numerous data of the research.
    D.Advanced technology of the research.
13.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “offset” in paragraph 2?
    A.Compete with. B.Differ from.
    C.Go against. D.Compensate for.
14.Why does the author mention Jessica?
    A.To keep readers intellectually hungry.
B.To stress the significance of modesty.
C.To remind readers of their ignorance.
D.To evidence the benefits of home library.
15.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Home library size indicates some lifelong skills.
B.Home reading equals to a college degree.
    C.Modesty makes a promising entrepreneur.
D.Childhood libraries lead to adulthood success.

根据画线词后文“Adults who grew up with relatively few books in their homes and later earned a college degree had literacy levels approximately equal to adults who grew up in homes with large libraries but only attended school for nine years.”
根据最后一段中的“Jessica Stillman writes, surrounding yourself with more books than you could ever read says good things about your mind. Those books serve as a constant reminder of all the things you don’t know—which helps keep you intellectually hungry and curious. And possibly, this will keep you a little more modest, since research shows the quicker you are to admit you don’t know something, the faster you can then learn it.(杰西卡·斯蒂尔曼写道,让自己置身于你读不完的书之中,这说明你的思想很好。
故选A项。
1.C 根据下文“For three years I a food science course, fantasy writing course and forensic science course.”
2.D 根据下文的“a food science course, fantasy writing course and forensic science course”可知,这里指参加(attended)课程。
    3.C 根据下文“to do the three-week sleep away version”可知,作者决定(decided)去一个大学校园参加为期三周的“宿睡版”课程。
根据下文“So,I flew to New York alone and to get myself to the Albany airport, which requires a transfer.”
5.D 根据上文“I flew to New York alone”可知,作者一个人飞到纽约,设法(managed)把自己送到奥尔巴尼机场。manage to do sth“设法做某事”。
    7.B 根据下文的“but I was also all excited”可知,所填的词应该是和excited意思相反。
9.A 根据下文“such as ‘Star Wars battle with pool noodles’ and ‘Harry Potter Jeopardy’”可知,此处指活动(activities)。
10.B 根据上文“at a college campus”和“only at a college in Upstate New York called Sycamore College”可知,作者爱上了Sycamore在纽约萨拉托加斯普林斯的校园(campus)。
    11.B 根据下文的“with a few and danced for hours”可知,此处指舞会(dance)。
    12.B 根据上文“there was a camp-wide ”和下文“in the nicest clothes”可知,作者参加全营的舞会要穿着(dressed up)最好的衣服。
    13.A 根据上文“a steamy college gym decorated with”可知,闷热的大学体育馆装饰着一些气球(balloons)。
be known for...
