Pablo Picasso was an amazing painter who experimented with color and shape. Picasso wanted to find ways to paint emotions. His paintings opened people's minds and showed there were many ways to express ideas.
Born in Spain in 1881, Picasso learned to paint at an early age because his father was a painter. At fourteen, Picasso began attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona. Although Picasso did well, his teachers wouldn't let him develop his own style. So he changed schools. Though his new teachers praised his work, they still criticized(批评)it as being too different. Picasso made up his mind to express himself in his own way.
Disappointed with his career in Spain, nineteen-year-old Picasso moved to Paris, where he learned about abstract(抽象的)art. He started copying famous paintings so he could paint in any style. However, an important development in his own style came along when his best friend committed suicide(自杀). Picasso was so upset that he painted only in blue and gray. He painted the poor and the disabled. This is known as his “Blue Period.”
In 1904, his painting style changed again when he fell in love with an artist's model. He began painting everything with colors of rose, red and pink. He mainly painted artists during this time, called his “Rose Period.”
Picasso's style went through another change as he began to learn about African art and geometry (几何). Instead of painting with different colors, he used different shapes. His paintings made people surprised because they looked like they had been broken and put back together incorrectly. Everything was geometric and abstract. Picasso's new style became known as “Cubism”. Cubism was so unique that it became very popular.
Pablo Picasso is most remembered for his Blue, Rose, and Cubist periods. But Picasso never stopped experimenting with painting. His painting styles kept changing until his death at the age of ninety-two.
    24. Picasso's school teachers in Spain________.

Each year, thousands of people are attracted to the Yosemite National Park in California for a chance of seeing —and photographing ——the unique “firefall”. The amazing “firefall” comes to life only when there is enough water from the melting(融化)snow to keep the Horsetail Fall flowing and when the light of the setting sun hits the waterfall at the right angle. It can only be seen for a short time in February on clear sunny days.
This year, the weather isn’t stopping the “firefall” from happening, but it is making the journey to see it more difficult.
“What would have been a 10-minute walk turned into a two-hour hike through deep snow,” photographer Ryan Fitzsimons said about his recent trip to see the phenomenon. “Our clothes were all wet by the time we got to a viewing site. But the heavy snow made the sight much more beautiful since the waterfall is much bigger this year.”
Another photographer Andy Heitz was making his first trip to see the “firefall”. He had to wait five hours in the extreme cold for his turn to take a picture.
“I got to the site at about 12:00 at noon. The place was already filled with hundreds of people waiting to see and photograph the ‘firefall’. I was so lucky that I shot a really wonderful burner! I was completely amazed with what I saw,” he said. “You know, only on a couple days of the year in February and when the sun sets down at the perfect angle to shine on Yosemite’s Horsetail Fall can we see the ‘Fire Fall’. I’ll never forget what I have seen.’’
The “firefall” should continue to be there from 20 to 24 February. But park officials said that there’s no guarantee(保证)that visitors will see it on any given day.
28.When might be the best time to take pictures of the “firefall”?
A.Early in the morning. B.At noon.
C.Late in the afternoon. D.At night.
29.Why might the “firefall” disappear between 20 to 24 February this year?
A.There wouldn’t be enough snow. B.It might be too cloudy.
C.The waterfall might not freeze. D.The snow might melt too fast.
30.What does the underlined word “burner” in paragraph 5 refer to?
    A.A worker in the kitchen.
B.The fire in the Yosemite National Park.
C.A part of a cooker or stove.
D.The unique Horsetail Fall in the setting sun.
31.What is the main purpose of this text?
    A.To introduce an attraction.
B.To give suggestions for a trip.
C.To advertise a park in the US

    D
You may think you couldn’t live through summer without air conditioning. But in ancient China, hand fans were almost the only way to drive the heat away.
Chinese people started to use hand fans over 2,000 years ago. The fans came in different shapes and were made from all kinds of materials. Palm leaf fans were cheap and easy to make. Feather fans marked the owner’s high status. Sandalwood fans could send out a sweet smell. Later, hand fans became far more than just something that could cool you down. They developed into works of art, in which Tuanshan-round fans, and Zheshan-folded fans, were the most common. In the shape of a fullmoon, Tuanshan were usually made of silk. They had beautiful embroidery (刺绣) featuring birds and flowers on them. Women, especially those in the royal palace, liked to use them. Poets in ancient China often compared an abandoned woman to Tuanshan. A poet in the Qing Dynasty, Nalan Xingde was a typical example. He wrote, “If only life were as beautiful as when we first met, why should the autumn wind bother to pity deserted painted fans?” Meanwhile, men, especially the literati (文人), used Zheshan. The literati liked them because Zheshan were usually made of paper and they could paint and write poems on them. It was a way for them to show off their skills in literature, painting and calligraphy (书法). Many things were painted on Zheshan, but the most popular choice was usually beautiful scenery.
Today, Chinese people still use these fans, though not many people write or paint on them any more. This summer, why not paint one of your own?
    32. Which fans could show a person’s social position?
    A. Hand fans. B. Palm leaf fans.
    C. Feather fans. D. Sandalwood fans.
    33. Who did Nalan Xingde refer to by mentioning fans?
    A. An abandoned woman.
    B. A woman with a Tuanshan.
    C. A woman with a Zheshan.
    D. A woman in the royal palace.
    34. Why did the literati like Zheshan?
    A. They were folded fans.
    B. They came in different shapes.
    C. They had birds and flowers on them.
    D. They gave them chances to show the talent.
    35. Where is the text most likely from?
    A. A diary. B. A dictionary. C. A fairy tale. D. A magazine.
    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
36 You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here is how.
    Plan your time carefully.
When planning your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making the list, you should make a schedule of your time. First arrange your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 37 A weekly schedule may not solve all the problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study.
Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this place, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios or TV! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class.
38 Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking class notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
    Study regularly.
When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher has mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material. 39 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude towards the tests.
The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you to remember your new knowledge. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't be overly worried.
40 You will probably discover them after you have tried these.
    A. There are other methods that might help you with your studying.
    B. Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.
    C. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.
    D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.
    E. Maybe you are an average student.
    F. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class.
    G. This will help you understand the next class.

Jane was waiting in the corridor outside her class. She had two exams that day and physics was the first. She really hated physics. Her friend Terry looked at her from the front of the line, and then looked away quickly. Jane thought she looked guilty. She didn’t have a problem with physics. She didn’t have a problem with anything… Miss Perfect!
“Hi, Jane, it’s your favorite exam today,” said Maya, laughing as she joined the line. Terry was looking at Jane again. “So what’s wrong with her?” asked Maya. “I thought you were friends.” “Yes, so did I,” said Jane. “but she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks now. She promised to help me review for the physics exam too, but then she ignored all my calls and texts. She seemed to have forgotten who her friends are!” said Jane angrily. “Are you listening to me?” Mr. Richard was talking to the class and the other students were going into the exam room. Jane gave Maya a worried look and followed them.
Jane couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Terry sitting two rows in front of her. Jane couldn’t believe it! Terry was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Is that how Terry always got such good grades? She felt really angry at Terry, but she didn’t know what to do. She thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her? “Stop writing and put your pens down,” said Mr. Richard as he started as he started to collect the exam papers.
Jane wanted to talk to Terry at lunch time, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. The next exam was history. That was Jane’s favorite subject but she wasn’t feeling good. She didn’t know what to do about Terry. “It wasn’t fair!” she thought. “Terry was getting good grades by cheating all the time.” thought Jane. Just then, Mr. Richard walked past her table. “Mr. Richard…”

    Dear John,
Hearing that you are interested in Chinese traditional food, I am delighted to introduce Jiaozi to you. As the Spring Festival marks the start of a new year, people choose to eat jiaozi to express their wishes for good luck. Traditionally, family members get together to make dumplings on New Year’ Eve. Making dumplings is really teamwork to create harmonious family atmosphere. Ways of cooking Chinese dumplings vary from place to place. Generally, they are steamed, boiled or pan-fried. Some are served dry with vinegar while others in soup.
I promise to treat you to a big meal of Jiaozi when you come to China next time.
    Yours
    Li Hua
    Paragraph 1:
Jane was sitting behind Tom again in the history exam that afternoon. Jane was feeling terrible. Mr. Richard wanted her to nod at him if she saw Terry cheating in the exam. When she saw Terry had her phone under the table, Jane looked up and nodded to Mr. Richard. Terry was too busy looking at her phone to notice Mr. Richard coming near. Mr. Richard picked up her exam paper, tore it in half and told Terry to leave the classroom.
    Paragraph 2:
Jane was walking towards the school gate, when she heard footsteps behind her. It was Terry. “Jane, please wait,” said Terry. “I’m really sorry I didn’t answer your calls. My dad has been in hospital for two weeks. He had a big heart operation today. I was reading texts from my mum to see how the operation was going. But Mr. Richard caught me. He thought I was cheating. He believes me now. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you what was happening but I haven’t forgotten that we’re friends. Will you forgive me?”
