Most of us are used to using jet hand dryers (喷射式干手器) in public restrooms. They’re surely very convenient—all we need to do is to hold up our hands for a few seconds until they’re dry. And more importantly, they’re supposed to be hygienic (卫生的).
However, a new study published in the journal Hospital Infection found that jet hand dryers actually spread more dangerous bacteria (细菌) than paper towels.
In the study, two restrooms in each of three different hospitals in the UK, France and Italy were required to provide both jet air dryers and paper towels for people to use. But on certain days, only either the hand dryer or the paper towel dispenser (自动出纸机) was available to use.
The scientists found that when only the hand dryer was available, the amount of bacteria in the restrooms was 27 times higher than on other days.
According to study leader Mark Wilcox, an expert in medical microbiology (微生物学) at Leeds University, UK, air dryers spread harmful bacteria all over the room. This means that if people use these dryers, they’re more likely to pick up bacteria.
At the same time, however, this raises the question of why these bacteria exist in the first place if people are washing their hands after using the restroom.
“The problem starts because some people do not wash their hands properly,” Wilcox told The Telegraph. In other words, poor hand-washing leads to a large amount of bacteria being left on your hands.
9. What did the new study find according to the passage?
A.Using jet hand dryers was very convenient.
B.Jet hand dryers were supposed to be hygienic.
C.Jet hand dryers actually spread more dangerous bacteria than paper towels.

A.By using paper towels. B.By only using jet hand dryers.
C.By not using public restrooms. D.By washing our hands properly.
11. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Washing hands can protect you from danger.
B.Modern technology may cause more problems.
C.It’s common to pick up bacteria in public places.
D.Scientists will find a way to improve hand dryers.

In 1987 a small company named Huawei was started in Shenzhen. After more than 30 years of development, the company has now beaten Apple and become the world’s second largest maker of smartphones. It has also become the world’s supplier (供应者) of 5G. In China and even in the world, Huawei is a wonder. Facing the law of the US, Huawei is growing. Huawei’s smartphone sales around the world rose 50 percent compared with a year earlier in the first three months of 2019. With her eyes feeling increasingly tired and her vision blurry (视力模糊的), 16-year-old Tian Ting went to the hospital with her parents in January. She was shocked when she found out that her eyesight dropped from 5.0 to 4.6 in only a term. “A few of my friends have had the same experience lately,” Tian said.
In fact, poor eyesight among Chinese primary and high school students rose from 59.2 percent to 70.6 percent in the first six months of 2020, according to the Ministry of Education.
To protect students’ eyesight, the Chinese government has worked out new requirements (要求) for school supplies (供应品) and equipments that will take effect (生效) on March 1, 2022. Traditional Chinese culture is catching the world’s eyes. The good traditional Chinese culture is our great treasure. President Xi Jinping says we should have a high of culture confidence. De means“Virtue(德行)”. Lao zi thought the great virtue is like water. And he thinks nothing in the world is weaker than water, yet nothing is stronger than water when it comes. It can nearly destroy everything strong. In ancient China, there is also a saying, water can hold the boat, it can also make the boat turn upside down. Water is a typical (典型的) example of the weak beating the strong.

(2020·四川达州)I remember a time I went shopping on my first visit to Hongkong. Coming from cold and cloudy England, I prepared for the sun and dressed in a T-shirt and a short skirt. Not having many chances to enjoy the sun in the UK, my legs were very white. In the UK, this is not a fashionable look at all. Most women spend every sunny day out in the sun trying to get darker skin. The darker the skin is, the better the look is. I have tried to get darker but nothing works for me!
As I walked around one shop, two shop girls didn’t take their eyes off me the whole time, talking quietly to each other in Chinese. I began to feel uncomfortable and asked my friend if we could leave. After we left the shop, she asked me what was wrong. I complained(抱怨) about the shop girls being very rude and always looking at my legs. I was embarrassed that they were talking about my white skin. My friend laughed, “they weren’t laughing at you. They were saying how nice your legs are. Many Chinese women want to have white skin like yours. In fact, there are many beauty products in the shops to make skin white and a lot of money is spent on them."
It just goes to show that we are never happy with what we have. The grass is always greener on other side. If the woman of the west and east thought the same way, western women wouldn’t spend so much money on cream that makes skin darker and women from the east wouldn’t need to use cream that makes skin whiter.

A.She spent so much money on her legs
B.She lived in a cold and cloudy country

B.The grass on both sides is green.
C.People in the west have the best skin.

To become a better person, we should go to school every day. So how can we become powerful and start changes in our own life? Perhaps we can get some tips from the US First Lady Michelle Obama. During her visit to China, from March 20–26, Mrs. Obama shared her views on education with students.
The first lady encouraged Chinese students to aim high and get a good education. In Chengdu No. 7 High School, she told students that having poor roots doesn’t matter A long as you work hard.
