I had only swum in open water a few times, and always in gentle lakes,so I wasn’t prepared for how rough Lake Windermere appeared on a cold day.A swimmer told me the water felt colder than it had been measured, and that the water was a bit rough. But I,along with 10,000 others, was about to complete the challenge.
Most of the people taking part were doing a one-mile race, and 10 races were planned over the weekend. There seemed to be a mix of open-water enthusiasts alongside complete beginners—which is precisely the aim of the swims,to get as many people as possible completing their own challenge. The oldest woman competing was 77,taking part in the two-mile race, alongside a man who last year had swum in every one-mile race.
I had chosen the third one-mile race of the day. There were over 600 people in my race.We were taken through an acclimatization area a children’s paddling pool-sized part of the lake where we moved in to feel how cold the water was.“Not too bad” was everyone’s thought! Then we headed out towards the middle of the lake.
We’d been warned that the first 100 metres would be really rough. However, somewhere near the 750 m mark I was still waiting for the calm;it felt more like swimming in the sea than a lake.I tried to focus on my breathing and technique, and just keep going. As I approached the 400m-to-go mark my lower right leg became painful.I recalled overhearing people talking about how they kept swimming through the pain,so I tried. But it didn’t work.I began to feel the entire leg tight and painful.I didn’t want to stop,so I bent my right knee and just kicked with the left leg.
Finally I saw the finishing post, and I just concentrated on getting there—still one-legged.My finishing time was 38 minutes 25 seconds but that didn’t matter—the atmosphere was fantastic and everyone felt a sense of achievement, whatever their time.I’m hooked, and want to give it another go.I’ve already signed up for my next open-water swim.
24.How did the author feel before the race?
A.Scared of the most challenging race.
    B.Disappointed by the difficult conditions.
C.Concerned about the other swimmers in the race.
D.Determined to be as tough as the people around her.

C.To show the wide range of the participants. D.To introduce the various events of the race.
26.The author suggests in paragraph 4 that .
A.the race would cause breathing problems
B.the race became harder than she had expected
C.it was really necessary to prepare for tough swims
D.it would have been easier if she had taken others’ advice
27.What does the author talk about in the last paragraph?
A.Her confidence in her own ability. B.Her pride in having swum so quickly.
C.Her eagerness to repeat the experience. D.Her surprise at having managed to finish.

    Photosgetinteresting
Bemidji high school senior Jaxon Anderson is a shy teenager who wants to be everyone’s hero. When he puts on the mask, however,Anderson becomes the Amazing Spider-Man.
And when you’re Spider-Man,the traditional senior photo shoot just isn’t going to cut it.Anderson didn’t want cheap backgrounds or dark lighting,so he went for a movie set-style photo shoot as Spider-Man in downtown Bemidji,Minnesota in the US.
“I was struggling with what to do for senior photos and knew this would make me stand out and help me be myself,”Anderson said.“I love superheroes.I guess I’m just really geeky in that way.”
Spider-Man’s pictures are just the latest in a trend that some people are calling “extreme (极端的) senior portraits”.“Everyone wants to do something outside of the box,” said Megan Engeseth of Megan Engeseth Photography,a studio (工作室) that is known for its creative senior portraits.“It’s a totally different thing even from five years ago.”
High school seniors no longer want to graduate with a regular yearbook picture. While most still take a traditional headshot (头像) for Mom and Dad,they want the rest of their photos to reflect their true personalities. And they want the photo shoot experience to make them feel like a famous person—or superhero—for a day.
The goal for many seniors—especially the girls—is to end up with an impressive set of pictures to be shared and liked on social media. With millions of pictures on the Internet, the bar is high.
“You see these incredible photos everywhere on the Internet, and you want something really unique and different from everyone else,” said Mady Johnston,a senior at St.Croix Central High School in Hammond,Wisconsin in the US.
Photographers are taking notes of these new expectations and are trying hard to create unforgettable moments for students.Minneapolis photographer Lisa Slotsve lay in the snow to take pictures of a skier’s jumps and went hiking at Taylors Falls to photograph a hiker.
“This generation realizes that the perfect lives that surround them on social media are not real,” Engeseth said.“Instead of being the kid who leans (倚靠) against the tree, they want something that will truly show them and still stand out.”
28.What is the text mainly about?
    A.Anderson’s unique senior portraits.
B.The trend of “extreme senior portraits”.
C.The success of a photography studio.
D.The influence of social media on seniors’ yearbooks.
29.The underlined phrase “cut it” in paragraph 2 probably means “ ”.
    A.be satisfactory B.be unacceptable
C.save money D.be easy to deal with
30.Creative senior portrait shoots are becoming popular mainly because .
A.seniors believe they could make them famous on social media
B.they are easier and cheaper than traditional senior photo shoots
C.seniors want to set themselves apart from others
D.seniors want to show an unknown side of themselves to others
31.What can be inferred from the text?
A.Boys seem to be more interested in extreme senior portraits than girls.
B.Traditional headshots have been considered old-fashioned since a decade ago.
C.Even if seniors want their senior portraits to be impressive, they still want them to be true to themselves.
D.The most impressive senior photos are those that show a student’s perfect life.

According to a recent study in the JournalofConsumerResearch, both the size and consumption habits of our eating companions can influence our food intake. And contrary to existing research that says you should avoid eating with heavier people who order large portions(份),it’s the beanpoles with big appetites you really need to avoid.
To test the effect of social influence on eating habits, the researchers conducted two experiments. In the first,95 undergraduate women were individually invited into a lab to ostensibly(表面上) participate in a study about movie viewership. Before the film began, each woman was asked to help herself to a snack. An actor hired by the researchers grabbed her food first. In her natural state, the actor weighed 105 pounds. But in half the cases she wore a specially designed fat suit which increased her weight to 180 pounds.
Both the fat and thin versions of the actor took a large amount of food. The participants followed suit, taking more food than they normally would have. However, they took significantly more when the actor was thin.
For the second test,in one case the thin actor took two pieces of candy from the snack bowls. In the other case, she took 30 pieces. The results were similar to the first test:the participants followed suit but took significantly more candy when the thin actor took 30 pieces.
The tests show that the social environment is extremely influential when we’re making decisions. If this fellow participant is going to eat more,so will I.Call it the “I’ll have what she’s having” effect. However,we’ll adjust the influence. If an overweight person is having a large portion,I’ll hold back a bit because I see the results of his eating habits. But if a thin person eats a lot,I’ll follow suit.If he can eat much and keep slim, why can’t I?
32.What is the recent study mainly about?
    A.Food safety. B Movie viewership.
    C.Consumer demand. D.Eating behavior.
33.What does the underlined word “beanpoles” in paragraph 1 refer to?
    A.Big eaters. B.Overweight persons.
    C.Picky eaters. D.Tall thin persons.
34.Why did the researchers hire the actor?
A.To see how she would affect the participants.
B.To test if the participants could recognize her.
C.To find out what she would do in the two tests.
D.To study why she could keep her weight down.
35.On what basis do we “adjust the influence” according to the last paragraph?
A.How hungry we are. B.How slim we want to be.
C.How we perceive others. D.How we feel about the food.

W:All right. Was it seven or ten nights you wanted?
    M:Oh,ten,please.
W:Right.Well, let’s start with Italy.Umm,we’ve got ten nights for 345 pounds, from Manchester,on the sixteenth.
M:No,that’s no good for me.We wouldn’t get back till the twenty-sixth,and my wife’s got to be back at work before that.
    W:Umm...how about Sweden?That would be 470 pounds,from Manchester again,on the eleventh.
    M:Well,that seems too much.
    W:All right.How about Spain?
M:Oh,that sounds great. We’ve never been there.
    W:Let’s see now.We’ve got ten nights,from London,on the thirteenth,for 385 pounds.
    M:Oh,wait a minute.We’d prefer a flight from the North somewhere,Manchester perhaps.Er...OK,in this case,Sweden then.
    W:All right.

M:Will you go to any evening classes at the community centre this year,Jess?
W:Maybe. Is the badminton club running this year?I enjoyed that.
    M:Yes,but it’s on Mondays now,at 6:30.
W:That’s a shame.I have to work late at the swimming pool on Mondays.I could go,but I’ll arrive late. What’s on Tuesdays? Is it tennis club again?
M:No.That’s on Wednesdays this year.On Tuesdays it’s football.
    W:Will you go?
M:To football? No,but I might go to tennis.I’ve just read my college timetable.I have Spanish grammar classes all afternoon on Wednesday. My brain always feels really tired after those lessons,so I’ll enjoy hitting a ball hard after that!
W:Then maybe I won’t go to that!It sounds like it will be dangerous if you’re there! Is there anything on Thursdays?
M:Mr.Brown is running his usual club again, just like last year.
W:Oh!Mr.Brown’s Thursday film club!I enjoyed that.We had some great discussions.
M:Yes,I’m hoping to do that this year too.And on Fridays, the local singing group will be upstairs and the guitar group is downstairs.
W:Oh,yes.I tried the singing group a few years ago,but the songs were quite boring.
M:Well,I guess I’ll see you on Thursday evenings then!
    W:Yes!
