Step 1 Intrduce and discuss
Suggested questins:
Say: With the rapid develpment f technlgy, it’s nt difficult fr us t make new friends. We can easily d it by using QQ, MSN, ICQ, attending clubs and s n. Hwever, amng thse, making pen-friends is the mst traditinal way with lng histry.
Have yu gt a pen friend? If s, in which cuntry?
What language d yu use t write t yur pen-friend?
What d yu think f yur pen-friend?
Why d yu want t make pen-friends?
If yu dn’t have a pen-friend, are yu ging t write t ne?
Step 2 Read and think
Have students read a jke cncerning pen-friend and ask students why the jke is humrus:
Pssible answers: The cartn is funny because the tw characters are thinking f the meaning f ‘pen-friend’ in tw different ways. ‘Hi’ is thinking the nrmal meaning- a friend t whm we write letters while ‘L’ is thinking f a friend wh is a pen.
Step 3 Learn, discuss and d a brainstrming
Say: Whether r nt yu have a pen-friend nw, imagine that yu are writing t a new pen-friend Stella in Newcastle fr the first time. (Tell students Newcastle is a city in Britain) And befre that, I’ll ask yu sme questins.
Intrduce the wrds ‘subject’, ‘hbby’ and ‘ambitin’ t the students.
Questin1: Will yu write t her abut what yu are learning at schl?
Say: That means yu will tell her smething abut yur ‘subject’. (Elicit ‘subject’ and have students read it)
Questin2: What will yu want t be when yu grw up? Will yu let her knw what yu mst want t d in the future?
Say: I think mst f us will talk abut strng wish with ur pen-friend. And we ften call this kind f strng wish ‘ambitin’. (Elicit ‘ambitin’ and have students read it)
Questin3: What d yu like t d in yur spare time?
Say: Smething yu like ding is a ppular tpic. That is t say ‘hbby’ is always shared between pen friends. (Elicit ‘hbby’ and have students read it)
Get students t wrk in pairs and make a list f things which they culd tell Stella except thse.
Pssible answers: name, age, weight, persnal descriptin, family, pet, schl, favurite sprts, subjects, hbby……
Step 4 Circle and learn (t elicit the new wrds: rugby, hckey and badmintn)
Say: As yu mentined, ne thing which we ften write abut in a letter t pen-friends is sprt. Yu will get better cmmunicatin with each ther if yu knw the wrds f it clearly.
List sme name f sprt n the screen. Students will see a picture f a certain kind f sprt each time. It will disappear tw secnds later. Ask students circle the crrespnding name quickly.
Have students read the new wrds f sprt:
rugby hckey badmintn
Give students a grup f pictures f sprt. Encurage students t circle the crrespnding names f them in the square belw as quickly as pssible.
Step 5 Read and guess
Say: Just nw, thrugh the wrds puzzle, we learned sme new wrds f sprt. Hwever, smetimes, when yu read a new wrd, yu can ften tell its meaning by reading the wrds arund it. All f us can be a walking dictinary. Let’s see an example.
eg: I saw a cheesy mvie last night. Yu culdn’t believe hw bad it was.
Have students guess the meaning f the wrd ‘cheesy’.
Say: Frm the secnd sentence, we can easily knw ‘cheesy’ here means ‘pr and bad’. Nw it’s yur turn t have a try.
Ask students t guess meanings f the underlined wrds r phrases.

Say: It is first time fr Stella t receive a letter frm her pen-friend in Britain. But her English is nt s gd that sme wrds in it are new t her. Hw abut making the letter easy fr her?

Step 7 Listen and respnse
These wrds will appear n the screen:
Tell students yu will say a sentence. One wrd in the sentence will be the nnsense sund bleep. Ask them t listen carefully and repeat the sentence with the wrd n the screen that can replace the bleep in the sentence.
