Germany may be famous for its wealth of history and culture, but it also housed some of Europe’s most wild and wonderful landscapes.

    Jasmund National Park

It lies on the west coast of the offshore island of Rugen. This UNESCO-protected site is the smallest of Germany’s national parks. It is here that painter Caspar David Friedrich found himself inspired to create one of his masterpieces, Chalk cliffs on Rugen, in 1818. Here long trails can take you all the way to the Rugen coastline, where white-sand beaches and blue waters wait.

    Berchtesgaden National Park

Berchtesgaden is one of Germany’s oldest and most beautiful conservation areas. Trails go in and out of the forest, leading you along the bunks of glassy lakes. The more adventurous visitors may choose paragliding (滑翔伞运动) from Mount Jenner mid they can fly over 1,800 meters. Back on the ground, a network of more than 150 miles of walking trails twist through the forest.

    Southern Black Forest Nature Park

The highland areas, with views over Switzerland and France, are a good place for food-lovers. Activities in the park range from hiking and fishing to mountain biking, while the slower travelers will enjoy the trails for an escape from everyday life.

    The Bliesgau Biosphere

This place is home to almost half of all German orchid (兰花) species. The grasslands spread for miles, drawing in different butterflies. Thanks to its comfortable climate, this is a region of sustainable (可持续的) development. In fact, this park is an example of fanning done right and offers a wealth of agricultural know-how to anyone eager to learn.

    A. It has many different flowers. B. It covers the smallest area.

    C. It is good for travelers to fish. D. It offers beautiful grasslands.

    2. Where can visitors enjoy the scenery of three countries?

    B

Chinese people love food made of flour, whether it be dumplings, or flatbread. In the hands of skilled artisans(手艺人), flour is made into lovely models of people or animals to be enjoyed and played with, which brings a unique kind of pleasure. This art form is called dough figurine(面塑). Among the various art styles of dough figurines, Beijing’s Dough Figurine Lang is a unique folk art, which is filled with the rich history and customs of the capital city. Their delicate and lovely handicrafts are storytellers of old and new Beijing. In 2008, it was included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.

It was created by Lang Shao’an. Most of the dough figurines are animals and characters from legends, historical stories, and local operas. The finished product is either put at the end of a thin stick, or on a table for display. Some are mostly for children to eat or play with, with simple forms and vivid decorations, while some are delicate pieces of artwork for display only. For this reason, during the making process, they are often mixed with additives(添加剂)to prevent them from breaking up, being eaten by insects or growing moldy. Over the course of his long career, Lang Shao’an developed a set of skilled fingers with an elegant artistic sense.

Lang Jiaziyu, born in 1995, is the third-generation inheritor of Dough Figurine Lang. When he was 15, he created Beijing Olympic Mascot-shaped dough figurines which were highly praised. He looks a bit more fashionable than other folk artisans. In his skilled hands, pop culture icons such as figures based on Marvel comics characters and Chinese mythological figure Nezha with smoky makeup, are resonating with young people.

Like most of the other intangible cultural heritage handicrafts in China, Dough Figurine Lang does not get as much attention from the public. Many young people are unwilling to take the time to master a skill that does not make money, which has led to a decline in the number of those who are devoted to the handicraft. Good handicrafts need the devotion of artisans from one generation to another.

    4. Why do artisans add additives to dough figurines?

    A. To make dough figurines taste good.

    B. To keep colors brighter and last longer.

    C. To help shape dough into various forms.

    D. To better preserve the finished products.

    5. Which of the following is close in meaning of the underlined phrase?

    A. are ignored by. B. are well accepted by.

    C. are concerned with. D. are familiar with.

    6. What is the best title of the passage?

    A. A Traditional Chinese Culture. B. History and Customs of Beijing.

    C. Dough Figurine and Its Inheritance. D. An Intangible Cultural Heritage.

    7. What is the main purpose of the passage?

    A. To call on people to master a skill.

    B. To appeal to people to value this folk art.

    C. To teach people ways to appreciate the handicraft.

    D. To persuade people to protect national cultural heritage.

    C

Wildlife corridors are like safe highways for animals. These untouched areas let species move about freely to feed, breed, and migrate (迁徙) without disturbance from humans. The Vital Ground Foundation and Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y) bought 80 acres in northwestern Montana. The area was bought from a landowner committed to protecting open spaces over development. The area will be used to maintain wildlife habitats for species throughout the state’s northwestern corner and is particularly important for grizzly bears.

“In 2015, new science on grizzly bear connectivity identified this area as one of a few remaining connection points for grizzly bears in northwest Montana,” says Grossman, U.S. program manager for Y2Y. “Last year, the opportunity became available to work with the landowner in the area. With the rapid development of the real estate (房地产) market, we knew we needed to act quickly.”

“At the local area, this project conserves open spaces for wildlife movement,” Grossman says. She points out that grizzly bears are an umbrella species. This means that if they are doing well, most other wildlife in the ecosystem is also doing well. Bears can help us conserve habitats for a full range of plants and animals that make a functioning ecosystem that all of us need to survive. That is why this project focuses on the needs of bears.

It often becomes more difficult to preserve wildlife corridors like these. In Montana where this land has been purchased, property values have increased and land has been sold and developed quickly. Once development happens, it’s harder to conserve land and keep areas connected. “However, this change in the real estate market has led to some landowners reflecting on their values and vision for the community. In this way, it creates an opportunity for us to be able to work with people who want to see these areas remain high quality wildlife habitats, rural and undeveloped,” Grossman says.

    8. Why did the authorities buy the land in northwestern Montana?

    A. To help develop the local economy.

    B. To better preserve wildlife habitats.

    C. To construct highways in rural areas.

    D. To prevent endangered species migrating.

    9. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2?

    A. To explain a natural phenomenon.

    B. To provide some advice for readers.

    C. To add some background information.

    D. To introduce a new topic for discussion.

    10. Why does this project concentrate on protecting grizzly bears?

    A. Their population has declined sharply.

    B. They play a critical role in the ecosystem.

    C. They affect living habits of other wildlife.

    D. Human activities harm them seriously.

    11. What affects wildlife corridors according to Paragraph 4?

    A. Land development. B. Community structure.

    C. Damaged ecosystem. D. Geographic locations.

    D

People often plan to receive medical exam but don’t, resulting in increasing health care cost. A surprising number of citizens mean to complete tax forms in time but forget to, forcing them to pay unnecessary fines. Many families miss the government deadline to complete financial aid forms, losing out on aid available for child care.

How can policymakers help people follow through on important tasks? They use carrots and sticks: bonuses, late fees, or regulations. These methods can be clumsy, and often aren’t effective for the situation at hand. Reminding people to form simple plans. however, provides a low-cost, simple, and powerful tool.

Evidence is growing that providing prompts, which push people at key times to think through how and when they will follow through, make people more likely to act on tasks of importance. In one early randomized study on tetanus vaccination rates, for example, a team of social psychologists showed that 28% of Oxford University seniors got the shot after being encouraged to review their weekly schedules and to select a possible time to stop by the health center. They were also given a list of times when shots were available and a map showing the health center’s location. Only 3% of the seniors got the shot when simply informed about how effective the shots were.

People who make a plan gain an advantage from their psychological forces. Specifically, they can overcome the tendency to put off as well as the tendency to be overly optimistic about the time it will take to accomplish a task. Imagine Sarah who wants to renew a car insurance, but it will require two hours of travel to and from a garage. Making a plan may lead her to lake two hours off and have her responsibilities covered by her colleagues while she is away. Moreover, she will be less likely to underestimate the time needed to accomplish the task—a particularly common problem for complex tasks.

People mistakenly believe that their strong intentions are enough to push them to perform desired behaviors. These psychological research results stress the need for policy decisions that encourage plan making and improve social welfare.

    12. What phenomenon is described in paragraph 1?

    A. Heavy burden of daily chores. B. Lack of task management skills.

    C. Disappointment of over-ambitions. D. Failure to achieve original intentions.

    13. What does the randomized tetanus vaccination study show?

    A. People need to think deeply before they act.

    B. Specific reminders help people accomplish plans.

    C. Awareness of task significance matters in planning.

    D. Seniors need encouragement to have vaccination shots.

    14. What psychological benefit can people get from making a plan?

    A. They are realistic in the time required. B. They are optimistic about the outcome.

    C. They are confident to overcome hardship. D. They are careful with task arrangements.

    15. Who may be the intended readers of this text?

    A. Medical staff. B. Government officials.

    C. Ordinary people. D. Social psychologists.

____19____ Boomforest is an organization in Paris, France. It planted two forests using the Japanese botanist's method. The group also teaches people how they can grow their own mini forests. In the Netherlands, IVN Nature Education has helped communities build 100 forests using the Miyawaki method. The group also educates kids about tiny forests.
