Mick lives in a town. He is known as “the bike man”. Over the past five years, Mick has built hundreds of bicycles for needy kids.
One day five years ago, a 13-year-old boy with a broken bike walked by Mick’s house. “I was working in my garage, and he asked if I could fix it,” says Mick, now 53.
The boy left his bike, which had a broken bracket (支架), with Mick, who asked friends on Facebook if they had the missing part. The town’s former police chief saw the post and donated two used bicycles. Mick took parts from each to make a new set of wheels for the boy.
Soon after, Mick, repaired a bike for the boy’s brother and assembled one for his sister. Word spread, and within the year, he had fixed up dozens of bikes for local kids whose parents couldn’t afford to buy new ones.
“People were dropping off bikes day and night,” says Mick, “It’s great that I can reuse them for kids who need one.” Mick stores the bikes and bike parts in his garage. “I take off the good tires or the handlebars or the seat and use them,” he says.
So far, the bike man has repaired hundreds of cycles and given away nearly 700 newly constructed bikes. They’re free, but the kids must agree to two things: They’ve got to mind whoever’s raising them, and they’ve got to try in school. If a kid’s grades are low, Mick requires a teacher’s note, saying “You’re doing your best,” Mick says.
Mick also hopes the bikes will get kids away from television and mobile screens, “When I was growing up, we all rode our bikes,” he says, “Hopefully these kids can get some exercise.”
24.What is the purpose of Mick by rebuilding bikes for kids for free?

Have you ever had a stressful day? And on these high-pressure days, many people might find themselves reaching for a sugary snack. Perhaps this is part of their daily routine. Or perhaps on this particular day, heir self-control is a bit low and they want to take a sugar hit.
Stress is natural. That feeling of pressure is a biological response, and under the right circumstances can be a great source of motivation. However, too much stress, has been linked to sleep disruption, heart-attack, ulcer or depression, among other things. But why should stress make a person comfort eat?
When we become stressed, our bodies enter “fight or flight” mode. Because our body believes it’s under attack, it releases glucose (葡萄糖) into the blood to provide energy for muscles. However, if we don’t use that energy, our body then releases insulin (胰岛素) to make the blood sugar levels drop. This drop causes a hunger response: you want to eat. And what you particularly want is sugary food, which rapidly refills the energy you have lost. If this happens repeatedly, over a long enough period, these high-calorie foods can lead to obesity(肥胖症).
So what can we do to fight the stress? Dr Michael Mosley recommends exercise, gardening, mindfulness or other activities you enjoy. But his strongest recommendation is trying to get a good night’s sleep. So, try sleeping to decrease stress.
28.What can we know about stress from the passage?
A.It is always negative. B.It can make people angry.
C.It is a natural response. D.It can make people sleep.
29.Why do we want to eat sugary food in particular when stressed?
A.Our self-control is too low to refuse sugary food.
B.Sugary food rapidly refills the energy we have lost.
C.Insulin in our body makes the blood sugar levels rise.
D.Sugary food releases insulin to provide energy for muscles.
30.How can we best fight stress according to Dr. Michael Mosley?
A.By getting a good night’s sleep. B.By taking up gardening.
C.By eating much sugary foods. D.By doing something your enjoy.
31.What is the best title for the passage?
A.What causes stress? B.How to reduce stress?
C.When to take sugary snacks? D.Why stress makes you fat?
    D
When you encounter animals, do you wonder what they’re thinking? Seeing a newborn lamb or a cute puppy might arouse happy emotions (情感) in us, but what are they thinking? Does the look on their face and how they behave indicate how they’re feeling - or are they feeling nothing at all?
Humans have a complex range of feelings, but it’s hard to tell what’s going on inside the heads of animals. Some of us own dogs because they are good companions, are loyal and seem to connect with us. We might even think they love us. Professor Kim Bard, an expert in comparative developmental psychology from the University of Portsmouth, told the BBC: “We have a few studies now that actually show scientifically that some dogs will respond when their owner - but not a stranger - pretends to cry.” The empathetic ability of cats, however, is harder to work out.
Other non-domesticated (非驯养的) animals might have feelings too. Giraffes and whales, for example, are known to experience sadness when someone in their group dies. It’s believed that even tiny creatures like insects might have emotions as well. Research is beginning to show they experience a wide range of feelings. Kim says “they can be optimistic, pessimistic, or frightened, and respond to pain just like any mammal would.”
Dr Barbara J King, Emerita Professor of Anthropology at the College of William and Mary, told the BBC: “If we understand the profound depths of emotions animals can feel, this should make us question the existence of zoos and slaughterhouses (屠宰场) around the world, and rethink those systems. It does seem all creatures feel emotion, but what is not clear is do they feel the same way as us?”
32.What’s the purpose of raising questions in the first paragraph?
    A.To entertain. B.To inspire. C.To appeal. D.To persuade.
33.What do the underlined words “empathetic ability“ in paragraph 2 mean?
A.The ability to respond to others’ questions.
B.The ability to understand others’ feelings.
C.The ability to stay calm when facing danger.
D.The ability to share work with their owners.
34.What’s the importance of the research, according to Barbara?
A.It may reduce the times of people visiting zoos.
B.It may change the food chain of the whole world.
C.It may cause zoos and slaughterhouses to disappear.
D.It may lead people to reconsider animals’ well-being.
35.How do the researchers sound when talking about the issue?
    A.Cautious. B.Certain. C.Critical. D.Regretful.

Learning to Give Praise to Others
Words of praise, when used right, can have powerful positive effects on others. They are free, but they’re worth so much to the receiving person 36 Your members didn’t follow you because of salaries but for more altruistic (利他的) reasons. Therefore, it is important that you give them the praise that is due for their efforts.
37 Don’t say, “You look good today.” When you could have said, “You look amazing today!” Don’t say, “Thanks for your effort.” Instead say “I’m so thankful for your being on this project; we couldn’t have finished it without you!”
Of course, with all that I have mentioned above, be sure that it’s coming from your heart. 38 Don’t praise if you don’t have a hint of appreciation for the person. Trust me, it will show in your eyes and the other party will feel upset. Insincere praise is flattery (恭维); you seek to gain something from saying good things about the other person.
Besides, praising in public is rather important. 39 When you praise a partner in public, you lift him up and his conduct for everyone in the room to see. Look for opportunities where you can publicly celebrate the hard work of certain people and make them feel they are great.
I believe that as you begin using these communication tips and praising people around you, you’ll see a change in the atmosphere of your work environment. 40 Eventually, you’ll find yourself with a more effective team!
A.So you need to be sincere in praise.
B.They are more so in voluntary organizations.
C.People will become happier and smile more.
D.It is much more effective than praise in private.
E.Remember that measured praise is no praise at all.
F.Words aren’t always necessary when praising others.
G.The best way to teach kids how to praise others is by being an example.

W: Oh, my goodness. My credit card is gone as well.
M: Yes, you left your credit card on the counter.
W: Now I’m in a supermarket. I’ll come to pick them up after I take the shopping home.
M: That will be fine. Remember to bring some photo identification with you.
W: OK. See you at the moment. Thanks.
    M: See you later.
    Text 9
M: Hello, can I speak to Miss Leaney?
W: This is Leaney. May I know who’s calling?
M: I’m Adam Watt from the Seven Star Insurance Company. Thank you for your interest in our company. I need some more information from your side.
W: Oh, sure, Mr. Watt, please go ahead.
M: You’ve got a degree in finance. Why did you apply for this job?
W: I read the job description and discovered a few interesting programs that I’d like to be a part of. They are challenging yet rewarding, just the sort of things I consider to fit me best.
M: I see. But given your educational background, wouldn’t you want to work for some bigger companies?
W: I prefer smaller companies to bigger ones because smaller business has the ability to be more flexible in its service offerings. In a small company we can provide our customers with the exact service that they need. By doing this, we can form a closer relationship with our customers as if they were our neighbors or relatives.
M: That’s very interesting. When will you be available for employment?
W: In two weeks. I promise my parents a ten-day visit. I can start work immediately after I’m back.
M: Great. I’ll call you back in a couple of days about our final decision.
W: OK, thank you very much.
    Text 10
“Sleep is of the dead. Sleep is a criminal waste of time. ”That’s not me talking. That’s two famous people:Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison. But tonight we have an equally well-known person who disagrees with such ideas. He is Russel Faster. He is one of this country’s leading scientists in sleep studies and the free-thinking lecture of the year. Russel is a man who thinks deeply and sleeps deeply and he wants us to stop seeing sleep as inconvenience, something to be gotten through, a man who wants us to take sleep as the most important behavioral experience that we have. Russel has been doing this research for decades at the University of Virginia, Chicago and now at Oxford, but his work also takes him beyond the lab. Through videos and popular books, Russel has become a public speaker for sleep and tonight’s lecture is about his research. Please welcome Russel Faster.
