    IstudyEnglishliteratureatuniversityandhavealwaysbeenproudof
Britain's literary heritage(文学遗产). Some British authors that you may haveheard of are Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. These writers are famous all
over the world because their books have been translated into many different
languages. In the UK, their novels are celebrated as some of the best that
have ever been written. We say that these novels are "classic" because they are still read and enjoyed years after their publication.
I read classic novels because they are part of my university lessons but also because I enjoy them. They can teach you a lot about how people used to liveand what society was like in the past. Novels like Hard Times by CharlesDickensremind us of the poverty in London during the Industrial Revolution while JaneAusten's fiction shows us what family life was like in the 18th century.
Classic novels usually have memorable stories land interesting characters. One of my favourite books is Charles Dickens Great Expectations. It is about a boy
called Pip who suddenly receives a lot of money from a mysterious supporter.
As he grows up, hischaracter changes: he becomes quite selfish and mean.
Another important character is Miss Havisham. When she was young, her fiancé
ran away on their wedding day. She lives in a dark house and still wears her wedding dress. She is a fascinating character, both sad and scary.
Reading classic novels enriches my knowledge and life experience. And it has become part of life.
    21. Why are some novels called "classic"?
    A. They stand the test of time.
    B. They are taught at universities.
    C. They are written by famous authors.
    D. They are translated into many languages.
    22. Why is Hard Times mentioned in Paragraph 2?
    A. To introduce the university lessons.
    B. To remind people of the poverty in London.
    C. To let people know about what family life was like.
    D. To prove classic novels help people know the past.
    23. What can we know about the character Miss Havisham?
    A. She is selfish and mean.
    B. She lives an unhappy life.
    C. She loves wedding dresses most.
    D. She becomes rich with others' support.
    24. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Why I like classic novels
    B. Why some novels are classic
    C. How to read classic novels
    D. How to teach classic novels

Melisa and her father had finished building a tree house in the backyard.Melisa wanted to decorate (装饰) the walls and decided not to buy anything, but to create her own art.Melisa enjoyed making collages (拼贴画) using photos she had taken and pieces of cloth. For her tree house, she thought she would use pictures from magazines. She could collect used magazines from her neighbors, so the pictures would be free. To create her favorite collages, she added pretty leaves, grass, and pine cones (松果) from the backyard to them. For several days, Melisa collected things from nature for the collages. She also collected used magazines from neighbors. Her plan was to finish the collages by the end of the week. Strangely, as she added things to the collages each day, many pine cones and leaves disappeared and the magazines became dirty and untidy.
“Dad? Mom?” Melisa asked. “Has either of you been spoiling my collages?”
“Why on earth did we do that?” her dad answered with a question.
“I don’t know, but what I do know is that someone is spoiling (破坏) my art project. It’s my task to find out who and why,” Melisa said.Suddenly, she had a plan. She cleaned up the rest of the leaves and threw the magazines into the rubbish bin. She started collecting magazines again, hoping to catch the thief. Even if she had to stay up all night, Melisa decided to solve the case. She collected many magazines and put them near the window so that she could see what would happen. She asked her parents if she could sleep on the sofa and they agreed. But it was difficult for her to stay awake. Within a few hours, she fell asleep. Just as the sun was rising, a slight sound woke her up.

    One possible version:
Melisa looked out of the window with her eyes wide open. A squirrel pushed over a pile of magazines and tore at the pages with its claws. It put the paper into its mouth and hurried away. Then, a few minutes later,it came back to collect more. Melisa walked outside quietly and followed it up the tree and into the tree house. Torn magazine paper, dry leave sand pine cones spread the floor. A box in which Melisa planned to store her snacks was slowly being changed into a squirrel house!
Melisa ran back into the house, shouting, “It’s a squirrel! It’s a squirrel! Wake up! Come and look!” Hearing this, Melisa’s parents ran out of the house quickly. Although they thought the squirrel was cute, having a wild animal in the tree house was not a good idea. They moved the box nearby so that Melisa could watch the squirrel build its house. “The case was finally solved,” Melisa said, feeling extremely excited about solving such a case and looking forward to solving her next case
