SOME FESTIVALS AROUND THE WORLD
When talking about celebration, festivals have much to offer. Here are some festivals in some countries.
Dia de los Muertos (Mexico)
Beginning at the midnight of October 31 and lasting through November 2,it is a festival when families gather together to remember those loved ones who have died. To honor the deceased, Mexican families prepare private altars (祭坛) in their homes. On top of them they’ll put photos of the dead and their favorite food. They also visit the graves of their beloved ones and place offerings there to pay their respects to the dead.
Holi (India)
Holi, popularly known as “the festival of colors”, is an ancient Hindu festival which signifies the end of winter and the victory of good over evil. Celebrated mostly in India usually in March, the festival lasts for a night and a day.
During the festival, people wet each other with water balloons and water guns, then they throw color powder on one another. There are also marching bands, dancing, food and drink, and much laughter. A great number of people are infected by its playful and childlike atmosphere.
La Tomatina (Spain)
As a big food fight, it is possibly the most chaotic(混乱的)festival.
According to records, the festival dates back to a parade in which some naughty teenagers knocked one performer off his stilts (高跷) and caused a fight of throwing vegetables accidentally. It was once banned until 1957 when the locals held a protest. They carried a coffin(棺材)containing a huge tomato as bands played a funeral march. Finally, in the decades since, La Tomatina has become a popular event which attracts lots of tourists to have fun.
If you happen to join the event, be aware that you squash the tomato before throwing it. Have a great time but avoid causing any injury.

A. Enjoyable but risky. B. Messy but playful.

Frankenstein: an undervalued novel
Frankenstein’s monster might be one of the most popular roles people play when celebrating Halloween. But do you know where this impressive image originally comes from?
The creation of Frankenstein dates back to the summer of 1816, when some young people were spending their holiday in Switzerland. Usually the weather in summer was pleasant, but that summer it rained quite a lot, so for most of the time, the group were trapped in their cottage. They started thinking about entertaining activities to have fun. Finally, they decided to join in the writing competition suggested by Lord Byron: Everyone should write a creepy ghost story and share it with others, and the writer of the creepiest one would win. During the competition, 18-year-old Mary Shelley came up with the idea of an ugly monster created from human body parts. Two years later, she published her first novel, Frankenstein.
Yet Frankenstein isn’t similar to other horror books. In the book, the monster can explain the story from his perspective. Although he is scary, ugly, and violent, he has understandable human emotions, and the book indicates that his violent actions are reasonable. He explains that he becomes cruel and violent because he has been treated cruelly and violently by the scientist who creates him and also the people he meets. The book raises awareness of our responsibilities to other people and also inspires us to put ourselves in others’ shoes.
It also talks about an imaginary scientific experiment and its effects, and because of this, it is considered as the first science fiction novel, or the beginning of science fiction as a genre. This means that the novel has probably influenced a lot of science fiction created later. Perhaps without Frankenstein, we wouldn’t have the chance to enjoy Edward Scissorhands, Captain America, or Star Wars.
However, I enjoy Frankenstein mostly because it can be interpreted differently. The problems it covers are simple and universal. It can be interpreted as a metaphor for family relationships, human emotions, or individualism, or as a criticism of misuse of science.
24. Which word best describes how the story of Frankenstein comes into being?
A. Hard. B. Accidentally. C. Mysteriously. D. Amusingly.
25. What does the underlined word “creepy” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Creative. B. Interesting. C. Strange. D. Frightening.
26. In the author’s opinion, what makes Frankenstein different from other horror books?
A. The themes it tries to explore.
B. The writing techniques it employs.
C. The miserable experiences its character has.
D. The way it comes into being.
27. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To give comments on Frankenstein.
B.To recommend the book Frankenstein.
C. To introduce the story in Frankenstein.
D. To show why the author loves Frankenstein.
C
With the weather getting hot, bites caused by mosquitoes not only annoy people, but can result in many infectious diseases. Even when people wear long clothes, mosquitoes’ complex biting mechanism enables them to bite some of them through.
It would be great if clothing could be used to completely prevent people from getting bitten. Researchers tested graphene (石墨烯), a material that is incredibly thin but really strong, in order to find out if it can make clothing resistant to mosquitoes.
In the lab experiment, volunteers exposed a small patch of skin on their arm or hand to roughly 100 mosquitoes for five minutes at a time. Researchers tested three different situations: volunteers wearing no protection, wearing cheesecloth (薄纱棉布), or wearing cheesecloth plus a thin graphene layer under it.
A video camera was then used to record and quantify mosquitoes’ behavior, including whether they landed on the skin, how long they stayed there, and whether they began to suck blood. The number of bites each volunteer got was also calculated based on how many swellings developed on their skin afterward. Finally, researchers dropped a little water or sweat on top of the graphene layer and studied the consequence, and they also tested a slightly different graphene layer called “reduced graphene”.
As a result, the number of mosquito bites on naked skin was the highest, about 16 on average; skin only protected by cheesecloth got the second, approximately 10 per five minutes’ exposure. The exciting finding was that there was no swelling developing on skin covered by the thin graphene layer under cheesecloth, which means the material is effective at preventing mosquito bites. The mosquitoes landed on skin totally uncovered or covered in cheesecloth about 23 times on average, and stayed for one to two minutes. Comparatively, the mosquitoes landed on skin covered in the graphene layer fewer than 10 times, and the length of their stay was much shorter. Besides, water or sweat can ruin the graphene layer, which allows mosquitoes to bite through it. But fortunately, the number of mosquito bites in either dry or wet conditions can be lowered as long as the graphene material is improved to a certain extent in the future.
28. Why did researchers conduct the experiment?
A. To record the behavior of mosquitoes.
B. To find a solution to stop infectious diseases.
C. To test graphene’s effectiveness in preventing mosquito bites.
D. To find a substance to prevent mosquito bites.
29. What was the problem when water or sweat was applied to graphene in the experiment?
A. It slightly affected graphene. B. It had no effect on graphene.
C. It made graphene useless. D. It improved graphene a little.
30. In which way did researchers draw a conclusion?
A. By analyzing the reasons. B. By classifying three situations.
C. By comparing the data. D. By recording mosquitoes’ behavior.
31. Which of the following shows how the text is developed?
A. Opinion - fact. B. Cause - effect.
C. Phenomenon - evaluation. D. Assumption - conclusion.
D
White sand beaches of the Cocos Islands, which are known as a gorgeous tourist destination surrounded by greenish blue water, have now been filled with plastic wastes like abandoned plastic water bottles, toothbrushes, and cigarette lighters.
Jennifer Lavers, a marine scientist, went to these tropical islands with her research team. Knowing that lots of beaches were polluted by plastic wastes, the team conducted a careful scientific examination on the coast, only to find the problem caused by pieces of trash humans left was worse than expected.
Not all plastics are to blame. They are necessary in places like hospitals and airplanes, and make our vehicles lighter and more efficient. However, other plastics, especially disposable (一次性的) plastics, account for the growing mess on the beaches. Islands all over the world are jammed with plastics. And the Cocos Islands are no exception.
It requires the greatest effort of all time to control plastic pollution in modern society. No matter how tall the hurdles (栏架) are, something has to be done.
Apparently, demand for disposable plastics must be reduced greatly. “Why don’t we carry around bags that we can use over and over again?” asked Richard Gross, a chemist who researches innovative ways to make more sustainable plastics. “Let’s carry around reusable lunch boxes. We should understand how serious the situation is.”
Although it is important for individuals to make an effort to avoid using disposable plastics, it is also generally believed that only with international rules can such a deep-rooted, common, and worldwide scourge(灾害) be tackled.
However, the U.N., which engages in dealing with accelerating climate change and public health crises, obviously isn’t paying enough attention to calling for international action on plastic pollution. As a result, billions of plastic products will still be produced every year, many of which will end up in the ocean.
Nowadays, fish are eating plenty of plastics, and people eat those fish. It remains unrevealed how it will affect human health, but clearly the amount of plastics used has increased many times in the last several decades, and if this tendency goes on, by 2050 an enormous amount of carbon will be released into the already carbon-saturated (碳饱和的) skies.
32. Why does the author write about the Cocos Islands at the beginning of the text?
A. To tell the story of the islands.
B. To appreciate the islands.
C. To introduce a scientific study.
D. To introduce the problem of plastic pollution.
33. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. People don’t care about the problem.
B. The problem is too serious to deal with.
C. Action must be taken however difficult the problem is.
D. The problem is as difficult as jumping over tall hurdles.
34. According to the text, what is the U.N.’s attitude toward plastic pollution?
A. Unconcerned. B. Optimistic. C. Enthusiastic. D. Cautious.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Beautiful Cocos Islands
B. Plastic Pollution on Cocos Islands
C. Scientific Research on Plastics
D. The Problems Caused by Disposable Plastics

第二节 书面表达
People often say time is money, but in fact time is more valuable than money.
When money is spent, we can earn it back, but when time is lost, it will never return. The time we have in all our life is limited, and it is even more precious for us senior students. Time is easily lost because of the fact that it is not scarce though it is limited, so it should be valued most.
In a word, we should get into the habit of saving time and never leave what can be done today until tomorrow.
听力原文
(Text 1)
W: Jack, my father has to start his job in May, so we'll be moving from Oxford to Southampton at the end of April.
M: Why not move in June so that you could finish school here?
W: My parents don't want me to stay on my own.
(Text 2)
W: Excuse me, Mr. White. I haven't got my salary yet. Who should I contact about it?
M: Have you got on to accounts and get them to look into it?
(Text 3)
M: Frank will work my shift this weekend. I was afraid I'd have to miss my brother's graduation. I'd work his shift if he gets scheduled for next weekend. I know he wants to go to a concert.
W: Yeah, he covered for me last weekend when I went camping.
(Text 4)
W: Did you know that Anna is in hospital? She fell down the stairs.
M: Really? I've just seen Paul and he didn't say anything about it.
W: He probably doesn't know yet. Anna only phoned me half an hour ago. I wouldn't be surprised if the story ends up in the local paper tomorrow.
(Text 5)
M: Have you taken a look at them yet? They're important for tomorrow's meeting.
W: Oh, no. They're lying here next to my laptop. I'll go through them later.
(Text 6)
W: Is this elevator going up or down?
M: It's going up. What floor would you like, please?
W: I need the furniture department on floor 7. And hurry. There's a great sale there today, and I don't want to miss it. I'm planning to refurnish my whole apartment.
M: Relax. The sale started on Monday and won't be over until Friday. It's the third day today and you'll be there in less than a minute.
(Text 7)
W: Come on. Stop it, and don't get me wet. I'm not in the mood.
M: You'd like it once you get in the water. I promise. Come on, I'll race you across the pool.
W: I really don't want to. I'm shaking. You go ahead without me.
M: Oh, just try it once. It's fun. Once you start moving, you'll warm up.
W: I mean it, I don't want to. Go on and enjoy yourself and I'll meet you back at the car.
(Text 8)
M: Well, the one you wanted to see is on, Floating Choices, the one with what's-her-name ... That woman out of The Candy Bar.
W: Demi Jackson. Not sure it's your kind of thing, though. The last time we watched a political thriller you spent the whole time asking, "Who's that guy supposed to be again?"
M: Well, some of the films you choose are like taking an exam! You stop concentrating for two minutes and you've lost the plot. What about Starburst? It's got great reviews.
W: You know I hate science fiction. "I am not of your planet Earth. I come from a planet called Mars." Boring. That leaves Forever Goodbyes.
M: A romantic comedy? You must be joking. Maybe we should just go home and get a DVD out.
W: Well, we're here now. I suppose we'll go for your choice, but I get to choose next time, and no arguments.
M: Okay.
(Text 9)
W: Today the actor Paul Davis is here. Paul, have you always wanted to act?
M: Yes. I went to drama school when I was 18. I started looking for some acting job when I had left drama school at age 21. Luckily, I finally got my first role the next year.
W: Why did you leave your acting job on the popular television program, West Square?
M: I wasn't bored with the role and it was nice to earn good money but it was time to move on. In acting, it's really important to do as many different roles as you can.
W: Your new job is on the program City Watch and you play a Liverpool policeman. What's that like?
M: I have to make a big change. You know, I played a bad guy in West Square so I never got many letters from fans. This time, I met some police officers in Liverpool and I followed them around before filming. I grew up in Liverpool, so it wasn't hard to find my way around the city.
W: So you're back in your hometown. What about the future?
M: A record company has asked me to do an album but I'm not really interested. A friend of mine has just gone to South America but I'm saving to get my own flat.
W: Good luck.
(Text 10)
Good morning, everyone. Before we set off on our annual week-long hiking trip, I'll be telling you everything you'll need to know. First, you don't need to worry about carrying a tent since we'll be sleeping in shelters, but you'll need a warm sleeping bag. Also, part of the fee you've paid goes toward food, so you won't need to put that on your list either. Walking poles can get in the way when too many hikers are using them, so it's best to leave those at home. The most important item is a comfortable pair of boots. Even flat-heeled shoes and sneakers aren't adequate for the type of hiking we'll be doing.
Next, I'll repeat the rules. As you know, there'll be a leader walking at the head of the line, who will show the group the way. At the end of the line will be another leader. It's important to stay ahead of this person. When you come to the crossroads, stop and wait for the rest of the group to catch up. We'll be climbing through some steep and rocky areas. Don't be tempted to go on your own. Also, it is possible that we'll encounter some wild animals along the way. The last thing you want to do is try to feed any of them. Are there any questions?
