Overcoming Adversity
On the bus headed to the United States from Mexico, I experienced the saddest and longest ride I ever had. The thoughts of me not seeing my friends and family again were taking over my mind and causing a strong sense of depression. As I headed to a place I didn’t want to call home, minutes felt like hours and the hours felt like days.
“Welcome to the United States,” the driver said at the immigration checkpoint. The Officers repeatedly asked me for my passport, but I didn’t understand a single word coming out of their mouth. After we sorted out all the confusion we were on our way. With 3 hours left, a new thought took over my mind: stupidity. Not being able to understand a new language was the cause of my feeling. This filled me with a burning rage that I had never felt before.
Not understanding the new language I was introduced to was always a problem that I struggled with alone. In school, I felt like the problems were growing rapidly and I was losing control. The transition from being a straight-A student in Mexico to being a straight F student in the United States wasn’t easy and left me wondering if I could ever belong here. I was always known as the weird(怪的)Mexican in the classroom. Making friends was always hard because no one wanted to hang out with the weirdo(怪人)in the class.
I told myself that if I wanted to overcome my problem I had to practice it more. When it came to group assignments, I thought that it was the perfect moment to carry out my plan to hold a conversation with someone else. The moment arrived, I was nervous that it was my time to speak in the group. With a stutter(结巴), my first words came out of my mouth. “Hey my name is Jesus,” I said with a strong Mexican accent. Everyone in the group burst out laughing and the cause of their joy was my strong Mexican accent. This made me want to crawl up into a little ball and start crying in front of everyone.

Everything about moving day was a puzzle. I didn't know anything about our new building on a new street. Our old life was broken into pieces and packed up in piled boxes. I wondered if it would ever fit back together again.
Mom introduced me to our new neighbours, the Chens. Mrs Chen worked with Mom at the job she'd just started. Mr Chen was a famous craftsman(匠人) from China.
Mom said it was a fresh start, but it felt broken to me. I just wanted things to go back to how they had been before.
After the first day at my new school, I walked home alone. Mom had told me she had to work. I was still hoping she'd meet me after the bell. I had to open the door myself with the new key. I felt a bit hungry and went straight into the kitchen, ripping tape from the packed boxes while I searched for a clean plate. My fingers slipped, and something went crashing to the ground.
“Benjamin” cried Mom from the doorway. I didn't hear her come in. “What just broke?” she asked, kneeling to pick up the pieces. In her hands, I recognized the shattered pieces. It was Grandma's bowl. “I can't believe you broke this,” she said.
“Well, I can't believe we have to live here now! I can't believe I have to switch schools, and I can't believe you didn't even meet me after my first day” I ran into my room, slamming the door behind me.
The broom swept across the kitchen floor. Then the click of Mom's bedroom door closed behind her. I sneaked out into the kitchen and found the fragments in the dustbin. There were so many pieces in here, but maybe I could put them back together. Turning the pieces, I tried to match them, but this bowl would never look the same again.
“I'm sorry I yelled,” said Mom, as she opened her door. “Please just throw out the pieces. We can't make a fresh start with broken things.”
As I wandered down the hall, Mr Chen was emptying his garbage.

Many years ago there lived in Holland a boy named Peter. Peter's father was one of the men who tended the gates in the dikes(堤坝),called sluices. He opened and closed the sluices so that ships could pass out of Holland's canals into the great sea.
One afternoon in the early fall, when Peter was eight years old, his mother called him from his play. “Come, Peter,” she said. “I want you to go across the dike and take these cakes to your friend, the blind man. Remember that you shall be home before dark.”The little boy was glad to go on such an errand (跑腿), and started off with a light heart. He stayed with the poor blind man a little while to tell him something about his walk along the dike-the sun, the flowers and the ships far out at sea. Then he remembered his mother's wish that he should return before dark. Bidding his friend goodbye, he set out for home.
As he walked beside the canal, he noticed how the rains had swollen the water, and how they beat against the side of the dike, and he thought of his father's gates. “I am glad they are so strong,” he said to himself.“If the dike gave way what should we do? These pretty fields would be covered with water.” As he walked along the dike he sometimes stopped to pick the pretty blue flowers that grew beside the road, or to listen to the rabbits' soft tread as they rustled through the grass.
Suddenly he heard a noise. It was the sound of trickling water! He stopped and looked down. There was a small hole in the dike, through which a tiny stream was flowing. Any child in Holland is frightened at the thought of a leak in the dike. Peter understood the danger at once. If the water ran through a little hole it would soon make a larger one, and the whole country would be flooded. In a moment he saw what he must do. Throwing away his flowers, he climbed down the side of the dike and thrust his finger into the tiny hole. The flowing of the water was stopped! “Oh!” he said to himself. “I can keep the water back with my finger. Holland shall not be drowned while I am here. ”
This was all very well at first, but soon it grew dark and cold. The little fellow shouted and screamed. “Come here; come here,” he called. But no one heard him; no one came to help him.

Paula is a 55-year-old woman living in New Jersey. She lives a happy life without concern for financial or social problems and she constantly shares laughs with her family and friends. About ten years ago, her husband Michael gave her a gold ring with a diamond in it on their 20th wedding anniversary. She cherished it very much and wore it every day.
Having been married for almost 30 years, Paula had everything set for herself, and knew that her life in New Jersey was a thrilling one. One day, Paula was in the bathroom cleaning everything up, from the sink to the floor. She wanted to keep her house clean and beautiful. As soon as Paula finished washing the bathtub, she moved on to the part she feared most: the toilet. Wanting to get it out of the way, she quickly cleaned the inside of the toilet with a brush, and flushed (冲走) the soap away. After finishing, she felt there was something wrong, but she couldn’t think of what it was.
Paula’s heart skipped a beat when she noticed that her left ring finger felt a bit lighter. She slowly looked down at her ring finger, hoping that her treasured anniversary gift was still on it. She was frightened to see that it was lost. She didn’t notice that she flushed it down the toilet.
Paula said, “I must have flushed it down. It had been a little big on my finger, because it was winter time and my hands were smaller. I felt so bad about it. Sad and embarrassed.”
She couldn’t believe that she just let thousands of dollars go down the drain (下水道),literally. She searched the bathroom and even the house, hoping that she just dropped it somewhere and forgot about it. She even took apart the toilet and searched the inside pipes with a flashlight, but in vain. Paula had no idea how to explain this to her husband. To buy the ring, Michael worked extra hard before the anniversary, so to tell him the bad news was unimaginable for Paula.

COVID-19 made "social distancing” a big problem for 2020 and forced us to adapt in new and often creative ways. My super-social teenage daughters adapted by meeting with their friends on video chat; school campuses closed but adapted with online classes.
However, social distancing with my parents added an extra challenge. We'd recently moved them(very old) into the house across the street from us. It was wonderful to have them so close, but once COVID-19 arrived, everything changed.
How could we care for and interact with my parents but keep social distance at the same time? I could buy their groceries, and leave them on their doorstep-that would be easy. Meeting their social needs was another matter. They did not use computers or smartphones, so there had to be another way to connect. After much thought, my daughters decided we could reach out with beautiful cards, letters and pictures... and one of our dogs could deliver them!
We'd read in the news that although animals could be carriers of the virus, the likelihood was low, so we felt excited about the prospect of our new delivery method. The question was, which dog was best suited for the job? We considered each one carefully : Tootsie, Stevie or Stuffy.
We decided to give Tootsie the first shot at it. We tied a small package loosely over her head and sent her toward my parents ' door. Holding our breath, we watched as she approached the house. Suddenly, she turned left, made a beeline for a largedirtpatch (土堆),shook the package from her neck, and started to bury it, but stopped by our shouts of dismay.
Little Stevie was up next. He had more focus ; surely he could do the job. With the package affixed to his back, we set him on course. Stevie looked strong going in. He ran toward the door and nearly made it, but then a lizard (壁虎)ran in front of him. Chasing lizards is Stevie's favorite pastime, so we knew all bets were off. Sure enough, Stevie chased that lizard all over the yard and then went running down the street. I watched with disappointment as my daughters disappeared after him.
Paragraph 1: Later, we were ready for a final go--Stuffy.
Paragraph 2: Stuffy received treats (healthy carrots) and seemed truly proud of himself.

I had moved to Arizona about two weeks before the start of my junior year of high school, so not only was this a new school for me, but also a new state and I did not know anyone.
On the first day of school at lunch after getting my meal, I sat down at a table in the courtyard. As I began to eat, I looked around at the other tables and saw another girl sitting alone, so I decided to go and sit with her. Anyway, there was no reason for me to have a whole table to myself, and who knew maybe I could make a friend. I walked to check and said, “Excuse me, do you mind if I sit with you?” She was surprised at first, but then smiled and said, “No, I don't!”
We hit it off immediately and became close friends throughout the next two years. Towards the end of our senior year, she told me that she had been accepted to an out - of - state college and would be moving away after graduation. I was sad that I would miss her but at the same time was really happy for her.
She then shared with me something very moving. “Do you remember the first day of school when you came over and sat down with me during lunch?” she asked. “Of course! Why do you ask?” I replied.
She continued, “I want to let you know how special you are and that you make a difference. I was severely depressed that day, because something unhappy had happened to me that morning. I had been being sad since the morning and nobody realized my sadness. It had just broken me down. If you hadn't appeared, I would be probably in deep sadness for a long time after I got home from school.”

If there's one thing I can't stand people saying,it is"T 'm no good at anything.,I don't have any talent",I just don't buy that at all.To me,everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find,it does exist. There was a time when I didn't believe that. What changed my mind was a seemingly small event that took place in 1953.
At that time I was a high school student.I was a funny-looking skinny boy named Eugene Orowitz, who weighed barely 100 pounds,I was a good student, but as far as I was concerned,in just about every other department I was a loser.I wanted to fit in,to be someone and do something well. But I hadn't found anything I was good at.One sunny afternoon, our gym class went out to the school's running track. The teacher taught us all various track and field events.I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin(标枪)。Suddenly something inside me began saying,"Try it! Try it!”I had to wait my turn, though, trying not to look too eager. Finally, when everyone had had a chance to throw-the best throw going about 30 yards-I looked at the teacher.
"Hey,Orowitz,you want to try?"he asked.
Embarrassed,I looked down, but managed to nod my head.
"Well, come on then,"he said impatiently, and handed me the javelin.Behind me I could hear some of my classmates laughing. As I grasped the javelin in my hand,I was seized with a strange feeling-a new-found excitement. For some crazy reason,I was relaxed over what I was about to do,even though I'd never done it before.I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let the thing go.The same voice that had urged me to throw it,now told me it was a good throw.

There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have loads of friends. He showed off a lot, always talking about how many friends he had at school, and how he was so friendly with everyone else.
One day his grandfather said to him, “Mario, I bet you a big bag of popcorn that you don’t have as many friends as you think. I’m sure many of them are nothing more than companions, acquaintances, or partners in crime.”
Mario accepted the bet without hesitation. However, he wasn’t sure how he could test whether or not his schoolmates were real friends, so he asked his grandpa. The old man answered, “I have just exactly what you need. It’s in the attic. Wait here a minute.”
Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there. “Take it. It’s a very special chair. It’s rather tricky to sit on because it’s invisible, but if you take it to your school and you manage to sit on it, you’ll activate its magic and you’ll be able to tell who your real friends are.”
Mario, brave and determined, took the strange invisible chair and set off for school. At break time he asked everyone to form a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair. “Don’t move. You’re about to see something amazing.”
And Mario attempted to sit on the chair. Having difficulty seeing it, he missed and fell straight onto his backside. Everyone had a pretty good laugh. “Wait, wait, just a slight technical problem,” he said, making another attempt. But again he missed the seat, causing more surprised looks, and a few catcalls. Mario wouldn’t be beaten. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, and kept falling to the ground… until, suddenly, he tried again and didn’t fall. This time he sat, staying in mid-air—some friends were standing behind him.

Wrapping paper flew everywhere as Cali opened her gift. The box had a picture of a pretty girl. She was wearing white ice skates and turning around a frozen pond.
Cali looked up at her aunt and uncle with her big brown eyes. “Figure’ skates? Wow! How nice of you! But,” the little girl hesitated, “... but I don’t know how to skate.” She looked embarrassed.
“Don’t worry,” said Aunt Lisa. “That’s the fun part-learning how to do it!”
“That’s right,” said Uncle George. “We will take you to the ice rink(冰场)and all go skating together.”
“I don’t know...,” said Cali. She wasn’t too sure she was going to be able to do it. Sometimes she had a hard time learning new things. She looked again at the happy girl on the box. It did look like fun. Cali imagined herself moving and turning on the ice like a real figure skater. “Okay,” she agreed. “Let’s do it!”
The next day Cali went to the skating rink with her aunt and uncle. Her eyes twinkled and her face lit up with excitement as she looked at the other skaters around her. She sat down on the bench and slipped her feet into the skates. Holding the strings in her fingers, she could not figure out how to tie them up. “I don’t know how to do it,” she said. She felt sad that this was another thing she couldn’t do.
“Let me show you.” Her aunt bent down on one knee, explaining how to put the strings around the small hooks(钩子). Then she tied them into a tight bow. “Now, you do the other skate yourself. I’ll help you if you need it.” Cali bent over the skate and did what her aunt had showed her. Her tongue stuck out of the side of her mouth as she paid attention. After a few tries, she worked out how to cross the strings around the hooks. Her aunt helped make sure the strings were nice and tight. “You did it!” smiled her aunt, patting Cali on the back.

I looked out at the smiling faces packed into the school hall. Flashes from cameras lit up in all directions. The applause filled my cars. I had done it. I had really done it.
Just a few months earlier, I would never have pictured myself acting in, a play in front of two hundred people. But when the time came, I got up on stage and faced one of my greatest fears-and-proved I could do more than I ever gave myself credit for. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear.
If not for my teacher, Mrs. Sather, I might never have found that opportunity.
In the first and second grade, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn't in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone well. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people's conversations. I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy.
My teacher, Mrs. Sather, always encouraged me to write more. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with both hands. I think she was one of the first people to see my inner strength. One day, she announced that our class was going to perform a play she had written." 'll begin to cast everyone tomorrow," she said." I need someone who is not afraid to be on stage in front of the public to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody want to try?" A few excited hands shot up—mice, of course, was not one of them—ad Mrs. Sather smiled." We'll talk more about it tomorrow," she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.
