When birds’ habitat is destryed, sme species dn’t make it while thers survive. But what happens at the very beginning f the prcess, just as a bird’s habitat starts t change? Research in Argentina’s Mnte Desert has prvided sme answers. There are lts f trees, bushes, grasses and flwering plants in the prtected parts f the desert. With s many ptins, mst seed-eating birds chse t fcus n large grass seeds. The birds can get all the energy and nutrients they need with minimal effrt.
But when cattle shw up t graze the desert’s natural landscape, birds face changes in fd supply. Sme birds are happy t change their diets in respnse. But thers, nt s much. And it’s the nes set in their ways that are at the highest risk. Understanding hw birds react t grazing can help researchers slve the prblem f thse species.
Eclgists frm the Argentine Arid Znes Research Institute cmpared sil samples frm the desert’s Nacunan bisphere reserve t samples frm tw neighbring cattle farms. It was discvered that grass seeds — the birds’ favrites — were just ne-quarter as likely t be fund n the farms cmpared with the reserve. Next, they caught birds t see what they were eating. The Cmmn Diuca-Finch and the Rufus-Cllared Sparrw had adjusted their diets, chsing t eat their less preferred ptins n the farms, even while they still fcused n large grass seeds in the reserve.
Meanwhile, the Many-Clred Chac Finch and the Ringed Warbling-Finch were apparently unable t change their diets. Even n the farms, they wrked hard t find the few grass seeds available. If they burn mre energy searching fr fd than they get frm the few grass seeds they find, they culd starve. At best, their inflexible dietary culd limit their ability t reprduce r t care fr their yung.
Studies like this can help predict which species are at higher risk and help farmers prtect these pr species, even while allwing their livestck t graze. Fr example, the farmers can plant new species fr their cattle that will als be mre delicius and nutritius fr lcal seed-eating birds. The cws wn’t care abut the menu change — but the birds sure will.

A. Birds nly ate large grass seeds n the farms.
B. Sme birds changed their diets in the reserve.
C. There were mre birds’ favrite seeds n the farms than in the reserve.
D. Sme birds chse their favrites in the reserve but ther fd n the farms.

A. drive mst birds ff the farmsB. change the menu f sme birds
