The Heart of Watermelon
When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelons were expensive. One of my father’s friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.
Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie’s place. We’d sit on the edge of the dock (码头) and got ready for a big meal. Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we’d bury (把……埋进) our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart―the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, and most seed-free part―and throw away the rest.
Bernie was my father’s ideal (理想) of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie’s wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon.
What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don’t take the time to enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life.
For many years, I forgot that lesson I’d learned as a kid on the dock. I was too busy making all the money I could. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That’s the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away.

C.They ate every part of it. D.They shared only one piece.

A.the writer’s hope of enjoying life B.the writer’s busy life
C.the writer’s decision of making money D.the best part of the watermelon
The UN Environment Programme says that rising temperatures could mean the end for some migrating (迁徙) animals.
Migrating animals move through several environments as they travel away from the cold areas in winter to warmer ones. Birds may fly from one part of the world to another, perhaps stopping at feeding grounds on the way. Whales and turtles travel through huge areas of ocean. A report says that changes in any one of the places where these animals stay can cause serious problems. “Obviously these animals have developed their travelling ways over thousands of years. But weather change is much greater over the next 25 to 50 years and it is impossible for these animals to change their habits fast enough,” said the report writer Dr. Robert Hepworth.
Turtles are hit hardest by rising temperatures. Scientists have found that at higher temperatures, turtles have far more female eggs than male ones. In parts of Malaysia, turtles are only giving birth to female babies. And some turtles are more probable to develop cancer as the waters get warmer.
With birds, the main problem is the harm to important areas at the end of their travels or at resting places along the way. About one-fifth of migrating birds are now in danger because of these changes including rising sea levels, land loss and more strong storms.
Some other animals are now in great danger. For example, the North Atlantic Right Whale is losing their food because of the changing ocean flows; the White-Nose Dolphin is out-competed (淘汰) by other kinds in warmer waters.
The report is not all bad news. Even with the temperature changing, protecting the environment can still help migrating animals return. “We need governments to start taking action all over the world. The clock is ticking. We should make full use of every minute.” said Dr Hepworth. And now some projects are already working! Whales are changing their feeding habits, finding new feeding grounds and new foods to eat.
14.Why does the rising temperature mean the end for some migrating animals?
A.They stop moving through several environments.
B.They can’t suit the changes during their travelling.
C.Their travelling habits will be changed fast enough.
D.They keep flying from one part of the world to another.
15.What does the underlined sentence “The clock is ticking” mean?
A.It takes time to achieve the project.
B.It may be too late to save the world.
C.It’s time to solve the problems at once.
D.It’s important to stop animals from returning.
16.What’s the main topic of the passage?
A.Ways to prevent world warming.
B.Steps to save the animals in danger.
C.Animals’ competitions with others for food.
D.Influence of rising temperatures on migrating animals.

Dear Dr. Green,My relationship with my mother is worse and worse now. It seems she’s never tired of talking. She talks here and there, day and night. More seriously, I feel like we don’t have much in common. She doesn’t always understand what I’m trying to say. What should I do? Yours, Jim |
Dear Jim,I know how you feel. It’s not easy being your age. And it’s not easy being a mother, either. It’s common for kids to have trouble talking with parents, and talkative mothers are not new to teenagers. But remember, she’s nagging (唠叨) you because she just wants what’s best for you. Talking is her way to show love and care. And she also wants to know more about you. After a day’s work, she’s tired, too. But she will never be tired of caring about you. Kids should learn to understand and care about parents. In my opinion, it’s helpful to share school life with her. Then, you talk and she listens. Doing some housework together with her is another good way for you two to know each other better. And if possible, often tell her your feelings about the things around you. Always keep in mind: be polite and patient. Yours, Dr. Green |
17.In Jim’s eyes, his mother doesn’t always understand what he’s trying to say.
18.Dr. Green thinks it’s common for kids to have trouble talking with parents.

Singapore ― A Place You Will Never Forget!
Have you ever been to Singapore? For thousands of tourists from China, this small island in Southeast Asia is a wonderful and safe place to take a holiday. On the one hand, more than three quarters of the population are Chinese, so you can simply speak Putonghua a lot of the time. On the other hand, Singapore is an English-speaking country, so it’s also a good place to practice your English!
Have you ever tried Chinese food outside of China? Maybe you fear that you won’t be able to find anything good to eat when you travel. In Singapore, however, you’ll find a lot of food from China; you won’t have any problem getting rice, noodles or dumplings. Singapore is also an excellent place to try new food. Whether you like Indian food, Western food or Japanese food, you’ll find it all in Singapore!
Most large cities have zoos, but have you ever been to a zoo at night? Singapore has a Night Safari. It might seem strange to go to a zoo when it’s dark. However, if you go to see lions, tigers or foxes during the daytime, they’ll probably be asleep! A lot of animals only wake up at night, so this is the best time to watch them. At the Night Safari, you can watch these animals in a more natural environment than in a normal zoo.
One great thing about Singapore is that the temperature is almost the same all year round. This is because the island is so close to the equator. So you can choose to go whenever you like ― spring, summer, autumn or winter. And, of course, it’s not too far from China!

47.例文
When I was growing up, I also had a quarrel with my parents. An unpleasant thing happened last month, my mother asked me to take the dog for a walk. I didn’t do it because I was too tired. My mother was very angry.
“You watch TV all the time and never help out around the house! I can’t work all day and do housework all evening,” she said.
“Well, I work all day at school, too! I’m just as tired as you are!” I shouted back.
My mom did not say anything and walked away. For one week, she did not do any housework and neither did I. Finally, I could not find a clean dish or a clean shirt. The next day, I made the room clean and tidy.
I finally understand that we need to share the housework to have a clean and comfortable home.
