The music world lost a rock and roll superstar this week when guitarist Eddie Van Halen passed away. He was only 65 years old.
Eddie Van Halen was a founding member of the band Van Halen. He formed the group in 1974 with his brother Alex, who played the drums. Van Halen released its most popular single, the song Jump, in 1983. Jump rose to the top of Billboard Magazine’s list of Hot 100 songs and stayed there for five weeks. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio lists Jump among its “500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll”. Eddie Van Halen released at least 15 record albums with his band over the years, selling more than 80 million around the world. In 2007, Van Halen entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The Van Halen brothers were born in the Netherlands. Their father was a professional musician. Their mother was from Indonesia. In the 1950s, some Netherlanders did not approve of the mixed-race marriage, so the family moved to the United States. They settled in southern California. Eddie and Alex Van Halen had to learn English in their new land. Both brothers studied piano for years before getting interested in rock and roll.
As a child, Eddie was considered musically gifted. Eddie told a reporter he did not learn to read music. He said he would watch his teacher play and memorize his moves. He also said that he never took a class on playing the guitar, although he studied under Eric Clapton for a time. His father was among the first to recognize Eddie’s guitar skill. “‘You’ve got it, kid,’” Eddie recalled his father saying early on.
Eddie’s guitar playing was hard and fast. He was energetic while performing, often jumping like an acrobat(杂技演员) as he played. He was known for the way he tapped on the guitar strings with both hands. It influenced many musicians that followed.

A new study warns that pollution caused by the world’s food production system is also a main driver of rising temperatures on the planet besides the use of fossil(化石) fuels.
The study found that if the world food system stays on its present growth path,it will produce nearly 1. 4 trillion metric tons of greenhouse gases over the next 80 years. That pollution is expected to come from fertilizers(肥料) used in agriculture, mismanaged soil, food waste and methane gas released from cows and other animals that are raised. Other causes include operations of turning forests into farmland.
The researchers predict that even if emissions(排放物) from fossil fuels such as coal and oil were stopped now, emissions from the world food system would make it impossible to achieve a main goal of the 2015 United Nations Paris Agreement on climate change. The goal is to keep rises in the Earth’s temperature during this century well below 2 degrees Celsius.
The UN has said that in order to stay below the 1.5 degrees Celsius level, emissions must fall at least 7. 6 percent each year through 2030. The new study calls for immediate “improvements in farming practices, as well as changes in what we eat and how much food we waste”, to help reach the Paris Agreement goals.
Jason Hill, a professor of biosystems engineering, said in a statement that most of the efforts aimed at reducing climate change center on reducing the use of fossil fuels, and that the research clearly shows that the food system has a much greater effect on climate change than is widely known. Hill also noted that fixing the problem would not require the world’s population to completely stop eating meat but eat better, healthier foods. People can improve how they grow foods. And they can waste less food.
The researchers say such efforts are achievable and can also lead to many other improvements beyond controlling climate change. These include making humans healthier, reducing water pollution, improving air quality, preventing animals’ dying out and making people make more money from their farm.
8. Which part of food production causes the pollution?
A. Destruction of forests. B. Overuse of food waste.
C. Growth of food production. D. Mismanagement of raising animals.
9. What might the present world food system lead to?
A. Emissions may fall 7. 6% yearly. B. Climate change targets will be revised.
C. Global temperatures will rise by over 2 °C. D. Fuels such as coal and oil may not be used.
10. What do Jason Hill’s words suggest about the food system?
A. It is a bit difficult to improve. B. Its bad effects aren’t fully noticed.
C. Its importance is not widely known. D. It causes more pollution than fossil fuels.
11. How will improvements in the food system bring benefits?
A. People will live a longer life. B. Farm profitability will be improved.
C. Water pollution will be stopped. D. Global temperatures will fall greatly.
D
For many white-collar workers around the world, the recent widespread disease has meant having to work from home. Their usual office location, has been out of bounds. This means different working practices, which have advantages and disadvantages for employees. But the big question is, will they ever see their offices again?
Home working has made people realize what tasks they can perform at home, rather than going regularly to the office to do the same thing. It has given them more time with the family; they’ve been sleeping better and have saved money by not travelling or buying lunches on the go. And recent evidence suggests the majority of people working from home do as well and achieve as much as before.
For some people, this could be a permanent arrangement. In the UK, fifty of the biggest employers questioned by the BBC,have said they have no plans to return all staff to the office full-time in the near future. Of course, one main reason is that firms couldn’t see a way of accommodating large numbers of staff while social distancing regulations were still in place. But the BBC also heard that some smaller businesses are deciding to abandon their offices altogether.
Other bigger companies are also looking at winding up offices to save money as many jobs can be performed remotely. Peter Cheese, head of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, told the BBC: “We’re at a moment of real change in the world of work, driven by big existential crises.”
But this isn’t great news for everyone. Some employees can feel lonely at home, and there’s less opportunity to network or learn from other people, especially if they’re a new worker. Also, city centers may suffer most from a change in working habits. Shops and cafes rely on the footfall of office workers, and without them they face closure. The future is still uncertain, which is why it may be too early to say where our desks will be permanently located. But the office of the future may be your home.
12. What’s the good news for companies allowing home working?
A. They don’t pay as many salaries as before.
B. They don’t have to pay rent for offices.
C. Their employees spend more time with family.
D. Their most employees work just as productively.
13. What does the underlined phrase “winding up” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Moving. B. Transforming. C. Sharing. D. Shutting.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards working from home?
A. Objective. B. Disapproving. C. Casual. D. Favorable.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Where to work? B. The end of the office?
C. When to return to the office? D. Uncertain future of work?
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
After several days of parties, celebrations, and spending time with family and friends, it feels like all there is to look forward to after your long holiday is the dull work of real life. 16
Give yourself extra time. Extra time can help you manage the anxiety and blues that can come with that end-of-season feeling. 17 For example, you can come home a day early to help the transition(过渡) if you’re on vacation.
18 Think about someone that you enjoy being around, talking to, or care about, and call that person on the phone. Rather than complaining about your feelings, ask them about the best part of their holiday or the most fun moment that they had.
Go out of the house. Cut the atmosphere that comes from being in the rooms that are completely lacking in activity or company or appealing smells by getting out of your home. Even on a gray day, letting yourself have some time outside raises your energy.
Get some exercise. If you’re feeling sad after your unforgettable holiday, it’s likely that you will feel like sitting staring into space or turning on a show to simply stare at. 19 You will be pleasantly surprised at the shift of your feelings.
Look forward, not backward. 20 Remember to avoid a very big “life goal”, for this could be discouraging, with your tired brain already feeling unhappy. Instead, you should come up with a realistic goal that you would like it to be realized in the near future and then make a plan to bring it into being.
A. How can you beat the post-holiday blues?
B. Visit your friends for a future exercise plan.
C. Talk to somebody in spoken words, not by texting.
D. Consider one thing you would love to happen this year.
E. Here are several ways to say goodbye to your long holiday.
F. Before you give in to that, use your body actively for some time.
G. That’s why you should set aside some time to prepare for returning to work.
