I was 16 years old and on a fortnight-long trip to visit a college in Iowa. On the way our group stopped in Chicago for a day. We were staying in a building on the south side of the city and were warned not to go out alone.

It wasnt long, though, before I was feeling bored and decided to go for a short walk. I was going down a street when I saw some people making a wide circle around a man sitting on the sidewalk. His clothes were worn and torn and I could smell him from several feet away. I stopped in my tracks. My mind flashed back and I realized I had seen a homeless person once before: Me.

It was a summer night in my 11th year when the home I grew up in caught fire in the middle of the night. I can still remember the fire destroyed everything we owned. Thankfully, our small town community showered us with love and care. They fed us, brought us clothes, and within a few days helped us to rent a temporary house. A few months later they helped us to finance a new home. I could remember feeling loved even after losing so much.

The homeless man sitting in front of me, however, had no one to help him. I could see the sadness and desperation in his eyes. I only had a few dollars left in my wallet, but I went to him directly, bent down and handed them to this fellow, talking with him, touching his hand and wishing him well before I left.

He isnt the first one to get my help these years. Seeing the joy on their face, I feel more than happy. I wont stop and say no to those who are in need. Even though what I can do is really limited, I believe that the world will change if each of us gives a little.

    4. What happened when the author went out for a walk?

    A. He got his clothes torn.        B. He lost his wallet carelessly.

    C. Some strangers stopped him.       D. A man reminded him of his past.

    5. What does the author say about the fire?

    A. It hurt some people.         B. It happened during the day.

    C. It made him homeless.         D. It didnt do much damage.

    6. How did the author react to the homeless man?

    A. He turned a blind eye to him.       B. He raised money for him.

    C. He shared his experience with him.      D. He helped and comforted him.

    7. What does the author convey in the last paragraph?

    A. Care makes the world warmer.       B. Mans nature at birth is good.

    C. You never know till you have tried.      D. Everything comes to him who waits.

    C

Urban rewilding projects are attracting nature back into our cities, from creating city butterfly grasslands to building unlikely homes for deadly birds. The middle of Londons busy West End doesnt seem like the likeliest location for one of the UK’s rarest birds. There are only approximately 20-40 breeding(繁殖) pairs of black redstarts in the country. But in recent years, without being artificially introduced into the area, this rare bird has started to make a home in this crowded part of Central London.

The black redstart isnt the only unexpected species of wildlife to start living in urban landscapes. Moths, butterflies, woodpeckers and even serotine bats, more commonly found in the countryside, have also been on the rise in this part of London. These changes are the result of increasing efforts to transform urban areas from wildlife dead-spots into attractive, practical homes for nature alongside citizens. One new initiative is even trying to get offices to keep bees.

Urban rewilding initiatives often have multiple levels of benefit — greener spaces not only make people happier, but they also help solve water drainage(排水) problems and prevent flooding, as well as providing a home for bees and other animals. But perhaps one of their most valuable features is to make us feel more connected with nature and be more aware of our relationship with the environment.

The long game is not just to build green compromises into existing city areas, but to shift what development looks like in a city. Until recent years, urbanization has meant turning green areas grey with the concrete, asphalt and glass of traditional buildings. That transformation has unsurprisingly ended up being bad for our mental well being, physical health, environment, ecosystems and wildlife.

Rewilding is one way to completely change that process: prioritizing(按重要性排列) Plants and animals first, and paving the way for the benefits to our health, well-being and the urban environment that follow.

    8. Why are black redstarts referred to in paragraph 1?

    A. To stress the importance of rare birds.      B. To show urban rewilding has paid off.

    C. To suggest their love for living downtown.     D. To prove man lives in harmony with nature.

    9. What can be learnt about serotine bats?

    A. Their homes have completely changed.     B. People build more homes for them.

    C. Their population is increasing in cities.     D. They are uncommon in urban areas.

    10. What is the authors attitude to urbanization?

    A. Critical.     B. Approving.    C. Ambiguous.   D. Objective.

    11. What is the best tide for the text?

    A. Wildlife Is Coining Back to Cities

    B. Urban Rewilding Benefits Both Man and Wildlife

    C. Man Is Making Efforts to Protect Wild Animals

    D. We Need More Urban Rewilding Projects for Nature

    D

The moon may hold water in more places and in larger amounts than scientists have suggested in the past. The finding is based on two studies published in Nature Astronomy — that examined new data from the U. S. space agency NASA.

Until about 10 years ago, scientists believed the moon was mostly dry. Then, a series of findings provided evidence that water ice was widespread in small amounts on parts of the moon. The ice was thought to be in areas permanently blocked from sunlight.

But in one of the new studies, NASA said it was able to validate the presence of water molecules(分子) on sunlit parts of the lunar surface. The space agency says the identification came from data collected by its SOFIA airborne observatory equipped with a powerful telescope. The research was led by Casey Honniball of NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. Scientists have suggested the source of the water may have been comets(彗星), asteroids(行星), solar wind or interplanetary dust. The new research provides evidence that the water may be surviving on sunlit lunar surfaces because it is attached to minerals.

The second study centered on so-called cold traps on the moon. These are areas of the lunar surface that exist in a state of permanent darkness where temperatures are below about minus 160 degrees Celsius. Scientists say temperatures this cold can hold frozen water for billions of years.

Planetary scientist Paul Hayne of the University of Colorado Boulder led the research on cold traps. He said there are likely tens of billions of traps. Haynes team says the new research suggests more than 40,000 square kilometers of the moons surface may have the ability to trap water in the form of ice. That figure is 20 percent bigger than predicted in the past, Hayne said.

Jacob Bleacher is the chief exploration scientist for NASAs Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. He told reporters the agency believes it is very important to find out more about where the water comes from and how accessible it is.

    12. Which word can replace the underlined word validatein paragraph 3?

    A. Confirm.    B. Deny.     C. Observe.     D. Control.

    13. What can we learn about cold traps?

    A. They exist for a relatively short time.     B. Theres much moving water there.

    C. They are on the sunlit part of the lunar surface.    D. The temperature is extremely low there.

    14. What may the future research focus on?

    A. How cold traps take shape.       B. How to make use of the water.

    C. How water is attached to minerals.      D. How much water is on the lunar surface.

    15. What does the author intend to tell in the text?

    A. Water is found to exist on the moon.      B. Moon holds more water than expected.

    C. Scientists found cold traps on the lunar surface.   D. NASAs exploration of the moon is under way.

    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Negative thought patterns are a common concern. The thoughts we have can influence our daily life including our feelings and behaviors. It is important to understand how to counter negative thinking in order to reduce these negative consequences.   16

You must avoid using negative language. Stop using words in your mind such as wont” and cant”.

17   Consciously make an effort to replace these words with will” and can. Accept the fact that everyone occasionally fails, but see it as an opportunity to learn from the experience so you can do better next time.

Find the connections between feelings and negative thoughts. Focus on monitoring your thoughts and notice when you are having a negative thought. You can do this by first noticing when you are experiencing a negative feeling.

18   For example, if you are feeling depressed, wonder to yourself, Is this because I have been thinking that I am not good enough?

Whatever happens, you can choose realistic or positive explanations.   19   An example: If someone offers to help you clean your room, it can be because hes fond of you (positive) or because youre untidy (negative). The trick is to choose the most realistic explanation and tell that to yourself (preferably out loud). Then consider (realistic) reasons why the positive explanation must be correct.

20   Write a list of everything that you feel thankful for, no matter how big or small. Good examples include things like your family, friends, pets, comfortable home, etc. This will help you to appreciate how many good things there are in your life because it requires you to shift your focus to what you have instead of what you do not have.

    A. You should focus on positive things in your life.

    B. Appreciate whatever you have succeeded in achieving.

    C. Then you can think, What thought led to this feeling?

    D. But remember that dont use positive language too much.

    E. Anything and everything in life can be viewed as bad or good.

    F. Fortunately, it is possible for you to learn to change your negative thinking habits.

    G. Allowing negative language to grow in your mind affects how you react to situations.
